Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • January 28, 2011 at 9:11 p.m. PST
GameSpot held a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament in conjunction with Capcom the other day, and they've posted the first batch of highlights from the event. This of course has match footage, interviews with Seth Killian and other players, and a breakdown of how the tournament is progressing.

Oh my, Deadpool's comments cease to amaze me.

I'm really considering him for my team just because of how funny he is.

I want to get this game, but i'm scar from MVC2 infinites, assist spam and broken characters. maybe i should wait till i hear any problems with this game.. also i wonder if this game best played with a controller or a arcade stick?

Lunatiko13 said on January 28, 2011 at 9:57 p.m.

didnt anyone around here thought that the players in general were a little narrow minded with their characters.........i mean they stuck with old school chars like iron man............we saw him in almost every battle in this video..............people dint use characters like wesker or modok that have a very different style.........opinions?

#8
JustEddie said on January 28, 2011 at 9:59 p.m.

@8 People wanna stick to what they know in the tournament. Why pick now of all times to go off the beaten path?

All Viewtiful Joe did in the first video was jump around. No Exaggeration. Smh...

BlazinBlizzard said on January 28, 2011 at 10:03 p.m.

@ Lunatiko13-I'm like all for fun and comfort with ones own team but there was TOOOOO much repetition....use the damn new characters ya know....but in all honesty...that didnt even bother me the most.Look im no pro here, i only played this game a handful of times at NYCC but shyt dude, these players SUCKED...that vid where this guy only had a 1v3 with iron man was pathetic. he kept getting lucky/cheap proton cannons. i wasnt impressed for one.

all i gotta say is that my team will be:

Taskmaster
Super Skrull
(3rd is still undecided)
TRY THE NEW CHARACTERS PEOPLE!!!! all the characters are cool but its not always about winning with the SAME people. spice it up and stop suckin off of Dante's Alastor is ya know what i mean (not to knock dante's swag cuz he's the man!)

that will be all... =)

comments?

AngrySteve said on January 28, 2011 at 10:08 p.m.

Obviously alot of these dude came from the old days and aren't willing to let go. I saw very little variety in most of the teams. Its funny the teams that were chosen with new characters such as Joe, Dante, Deadpool, Zero seemed to have had the most success. Overall not very impressed with these guys I have seen a whole lot better than this.

@ angrysteve-----agreed sir

#17
RyKnocks said on January 28, 2011 at 10:20 p.m.

Those of you who are complaining about "variety" aren't understanding that this is a TOURNAMENT and not just an exhibition. How can you aim to win when you have no idea how a character plays? Wait until this game is out for a few weeks and you'll start to see different characters being picked, but until then, don't expect someone who is trying to WIN a TOURNAMENT to put themselves at a disadvantage. Otherwise, why even bother??

#18
ThatRandomGamerGuy said on January 28, 2011 at 10:26 p.m.

well what you see here will be no different at other future MVC3 tournaments. You will most likely see the same character teams once people figure out who is "top tier" for tournament play. Ex. Dante, deadpool, blah blah vs Dante deadpool, blah blah...

Ohh yeah.. If online play is anything like the first match i'm committing suicide!! Good gawd!!

#19
BlazinBlizzard said on January 28, 2011 at 10:27 p.m.

@ryknocks- i totally get u bro and do agree but i guess from our perspectives it just got a lil boring ya know but i agree.....btw please tell me u at least agree that these players, from what we saw were utter trash...??

#20
GZR666 said on January 28, 2011 at 10:29 p.m.

Wow, these dudes suck ass. They spammed EM disruptor, whirlwind, berserker slash, shield slash, photons and every other projectile based attack their character had.

It was just bad watching them. I thought I wouldn't be able to finish watching after match #1, but I made it.

Doesn't get better after that match folks, so beware.

soo..by looking at this video, there's no more assist spam in this game or do i have to wait till it comes out.

#24
Jerry said on January 28, 2011 at 10:43 p.m.

If I'm playing in a tournament, I'd rather use a character I know and have a higher chance of winning.

I'll save the learning for Training Mode or casuals.

#25
Icytor said on January 28, 2011 at 10:49 p.m.

Man these matchs sucked, and when gamespot said highlights i got excited, if these are the highlights id hate to see the "boring" matchs.

#26
BlazinBlizzard said on January 28, 2011 at 10:52 p.m.

@ Icytor---yes!

#27
Jerry said on January 28, 2011 at 10:55 p.m.

@24 They're probably just learning. Maybe when they understand the game better, they'll use the assist more. Besides, the assist "spam" is what makes the game fun and fast-paced.

#28
GZR666 said on January 28, 2011 at 11:04 p.m.

Not surprised at all that these matches are bad. I mean it's understandable considering it's basically a training mode tournament. They don't know what to do, or how to react to stuff yet.

But all that considered it's still pretty painful to watch. Unibeam x1000! That reminded me of playing against CPU Iron Man in Marvel Super Heroes he spammed unibeam like crazy, too.

#29
RyKnocks said on January 28, 2011 at 11:06 p.m.

@20
Yea the gameplay was trash but you can also blame the video editors. I mean it could have been someone who was looking for the most special effects to fill the screen. Hell, even the hosts looked like they were clueless about the game. So maybe we saw bad play because the good matches weren't even considered.

@24
Assist spam??!? Really?? A spammed assist in high level play is almost always killed. Assists are a strategic aspect of the game. Don't talk like assists ruined MvC2 because they were vital to gameplay. If you don't want assists go play SSF4.

#30
JustIceRei said on January 28, 2011 at 11:07 p.m.

Seriously, too much dandy in this tournament. No one goes balls to the wall for combo strings and such. And that Zero wasn't charging enough.

#31
chunlishusband said on January 28, 2011 at 11:07 p.m.

Lamest tournament. Period!

#32
Toykonightlife said on January 28, 2011 at 11:13 p.m.

if only they had sentinel there then all of the tournament wouldn't be that bad when everyone use storm, sentinel, magneto.

#33
JMJ_Th3_Wik3d said on January 28, 2011 at 11:47 p.m.

#30 theres such thing as assist spam and i bet it happen to you. Its more of a person not really doing anything in a match and just throwing out assist. maybe a little projectile action going on but thats all hes doing. But if some is using assist constantly trying set up fro combos thats ok with me. Don't get me wrong man there are such thing as assist spam

#34
RyKnocks said on January 28, 2011 at 11:56 p.m.

@34
I understand that there is assist spam but the guy talked about it like it was something that ruined MvC2. At low level play there's always something to spam in every game, but complaining about it in that context is like complaining about Daigo "spamming" fireballs. It shows lack of knowledge/understanding of the game.

#35
Shareware said on January 28, 2011 at 11:58 p.m.

First fight involves Magneto and Storm.

OF COURSE.

And then you realize that sh!t don't work the same as it used to and you get tore up.

But I will admit I loved playing as Mags back in the XvSF days. Just not as much as I loved playing as Charlie/Sabretooth. I've even recently added Sabretooth to one of MVC2 teams (Sabretooth/Doom/Jin).

#36
SnakeX said on January 28, 2011 at 11:58 p.m.

#18 and #24

-You both do have a point when you say that this is a tournament and that the guys gotta play ftw but think this way......characters with different strategies may throw the oponent off track because the style of characters like modok (who is TOTALLY unortodhox),taskmaster(whis is a combination of various characters)or wesker (that relies on fast teleports to do big damage)are not identified for the moment.......its risky to use characters that you are not used but the reward could be big

I know the game isn't even out yet but was this really the best footage they could get of people playing this game? I mean, it's not like the tourny is full of people who've never touched the game before, so how come it seems like no one knows how to do even the most basic air combos in this game?

Or is it that air combos work totally different in this game as opposed to MvC2?

There appears to be a few good players in that field. Is there any reason why Gamespot decided to show a bunch of noobfest fights? Are they just saving the good stuff for later? I imagine the round of 16 will be much better than this.

It is a new game, so none of us should expect a bunch of awesome players just yet.

Though what annoyed me is that NOBODY in those matches I watched used X-Factor, considering it could have been very useful.

Or Spiderman or Wesker, but w/e more for me.

#56
xShonuffx said on January 29, 2011 at 4:20 a.m.

@39 I see where your coming from but the point is most people think every fightng game video they see is suppose to be of "EVO" quality, yes the matches sucked I agree, but high level play for an unreleased game at a 64 player tournament and only a hand full of pros went to? You can't ask for much more than that. People on here just want to be obnoxious just so they can be seen. Nobody wants to be an adult about anything.

Thats all I was saying.

How do you want people to know combos of a game that is not even out yet. MvC3 also use the system of Tatsunoko vs Capcom which probably no one has even played because it was released for that scruby console.

#67
Gutter_Trash said on January 29, 2011 at 7:47 a.m.

My god these guys suck, you know a tournament is bad when I can probably win it (with my eyes closed). I'm like the worst MVC player alive and I can beat most of these guys. Even if the game is not out you can still learn the mechanics for characters that were in the previous game even if it's a different game. These guys should just stick to easy mode.

#68
LordTerminal said on January 29, 2011 at 7:51 a.m.

@63 There's at least enough room for Jin. Jin should be in every Vs. Capcom game. Nothing encompasses awesome like a fighter who can summon a giant robot to punch the crap out of your opponent.

#69
LightningCannonball said on January 29, 2011 at 7:58 a.m.

@ 67 Kurow

its not that hard to press A,B,C,Launcher,A,B,(C),special

nobody in that vid did that simple combo that might work with most of the cast! there were NO air combos, NO ground combos

they are scrubs.....

wach magneto was a joke... i bet that the guy who pick him up was a beast with him on mvc2, and WHAT HAPPENS? NOTHING!!!
EVEN STORM WAS SUPRESSED BY WOLVERINE
(like i allways sayid my first team to try out this game shurely includes ryu and wolverine coz' they're basics)

stop saying uuuuuhhhh my team will be na and da and bla coz mabe they're not for you

so wait till the game is out.. practice a bit.. and bring it on!!!!

@ 46 NobleEskimo

From watching all the other MVsC3 vids online, Capcom have added two voices during a match. The first voice is the male voice. He just shouts out whats going on in the match like "Aerial Rave!!" "Counter!!" "Advancing Guard!!" "Down!!" "KO!!" etc, and then you have the female voice who commentates on the actual match, much like the commentators in SF4 & SSSF4!

None of these matches where good, dunno what you guys where smoking. It was comprised of people who where trying to play it like MvC2 when its a new damn game, and then complete scrubs. That was it. Horrible.

And if they aren't good at fighting games, dont go to a god damn tournament for one.

#84

This is why it's never wise to put up video of round 1 of any tournament.

If they would have posted video of round 1 of the Gamestop SF4 tournament I was involved in, I'd be embarrassed at how much I sucked. But it was my first time playing the game, so that's ALWAYS what happens.

I'm much better now, though, and I'd be glad to compete with my improved skills. Too bad I can't travel across the US all year. No money for it. :/

#92
Hakansoilbarrel said on January 29, 2011 at 3:34 p.m.

(Alright, I'm no pro but I've done this 'game tourney before it's released thing'(With Brawl, at Gamestop) and it's not that hard to look up movesets and see what a character can do online. That guy that used NO SPECIAL MOVES WITH TRISH(Sort of like using Unoiled Hakan)...c'mon, man. I know there's pressure to perform in an unfamiliar environment/manner but I didn't see one exchange air combo or X-factor. That Viewtiful Joe player not using Red Hot Kick or VOOMERANGS made me cringe. He's small and NOT FAST. You can't just walk to your opponent!

/Nerdrage off.

Only thing I think I gained from this is Proton Cannon is spammable.)

I'm not too sure when exactly it was revealed, but I had only noticed it myself in newer videos, so I assume it must be this newer build they've brought it in for!!

Personally I loved the whole sport style commentating in SSF4, but you're right dude, this lady sounds damn annoying!! Gonna have to mentally block her out while I'm playing... :oS

Wolverine hasen't been this effective since MSHvSF. He seems to have an increased damage output, GREATLY increased range, and a much faster recovery time on all his moves! His health seems to be about the same though, but I'd say that's probably a good thing.
