According to a report by the head of EmpireStateGamer.com, Ashley Alfaro, Capcom has asked an arcade to relock Oni and Evil Ryu in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, making it so players cannot select either fighter."The Capcops are coming! The Capcops are coming!". They sure did. It was only a matter of days before Capcom dropped the hammer on our local arcade asking the owner to relock the unlocked Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition characters, Oni Akuma and Evil Ryu. As soon as news broke out about the unlocked characters, Pro SF Fighters traveled far and wide to get their hands on 'em. Some, who I know personally, have broke night playing these characters non-stop. Although it may have seemed pretty radical at the time, It's a good thing they did. The characters, we hear, will be relocked asap and might be at the time of this post.
Yoshinori Ono has also resurfaced on Twitter, following some statements that made it sound like he was in trouble over the leaks. He had this to say.
Put someone in charge who doesn't troll... give us new characters and stages!
very lame probly woulnt have unliocked them if people didnt get bs awnsers about characters and the ono trolling think the hype for a.e. went back up when they were unlocked besides its not like the people arnt gonna buy it when its out (a.e)
Lame way in handling the issue.
They should have had a plan b in casa of something like this happening.
Now what everyone's supposed to do? Pretend it never happened?
Capcom showed a lot of amauterism regarding this leak. The best business decison in a case like this would be playing naturally with the outcome and announcing more characters in the future.
Now the announcement of ony and evil ryu will be without any hype, and the arcade users will be pissed the new characteters are going to be locked.
Dumb, dumb capcom
Tbh, they own the machine.
Capcom can't force them to do it, they have a choice.
Thank god AI didn't unlock Hugo and Rolento or Capcom would have cancelled the whole project
that's a weird move by capcom...i mean people know about them u can't unsee or unhere stuff...and besides that people went to the arcades just to play as them so that's some good money ain't it?
i think it would be wise to now unlock them in 2,3 japanese arcades...EVERYONE will go there and spend their yen...and then some more follow. that way they can make the quick cash they want and can give us that damn DLC
OK ... im kinda... disturbed about this...
Maaan if they are gonna someday release AE edition to CONSOLES! WHAt IF this event that has happned, will keep those characters locked FOREEEVER!
I want my Oni <)>.<(>
They will make more money if they keep oni and evil ryu tho... just make them DLC characters INSTEAD lol. anywho.... im thankful for the americans for showing them, i was kinda hyped for 2 days... now... im worried lol.
clearly u guys have no clue on copyright issues....
Ono's lucky he still has his job. Good thing Capcom did what they could but the damage is already done.
Why would they bother re-locking them? That is just annoying. They spilt the beans, whats done is done.
so much drama for such stupid reason, they sell the arcades, there is a law that protect videogame footage if that footage have commentary of the person or a third person therefore that means that footage is under fair use, at that point all the footage that was taken down was at that time under that law of fair use therefore crapcom have no right to sue anyone for not taking it down if they dont want to, so the only guilty ones are those that go along them an do as they say, but anyway is not like this is such a big deal, they got lock so what they can unlock them anytime they want is just a matter of time
LMAO Capcom its already over people have already made threads, list of moves, hp, and a whole lot else.
There was no real point in relocking it capcom is so funny
Capcom make a PC version and stop your silly nonsense already
Seems like a lot of stupid fuss over a couple of men to pick in a videogame.
btw. there are still videos on youtube showing e.ryu and oni...one is 15 minutes of gameplay n stuff...so wtf? if they take them down take em all down this is some dumb s*it
not that i want them to be taken down..but like this it just seems very stupid and childish
Now the question is will the old model prevail or will they do evasive maneuvers and make two MORE characters. i.e.
-Old Model -
Oni and Evil in May. Two more characters four months later and finally, two more characters to celebrate the new disc-based game complete with two new backgrounds and MvC3 stat tracking (yeah, I make my own rumors).
or
-New Model-
Move up release of two new characters and make two NEW characters to put in their old place and then procede with above plan.
ALSO ...
The character revealed seem to follow a pattern of being both "clone-like" and story specfic. To which we can imagine, Hugo and Charlie being the new characters. But as a Birdie, Retsu, Oro fan that doesn't make me very happy.
Thoughts?
Charlie, Hugo, SFI character return, Rolento, Karin, Elena and no charge characters (poo).
Oh, and if my post wasn't long enough, I meant Poison instead of Elena. Sorry. I like Elena too.
This whole thing is a joke. It's just publicity. Do ya'll really think Capcom didn't know that this would happen? MVC3 is about to blowup, and they know the hype is gonna die down on SSF4.
1st they SHOW us what we ALREADY KNEW.....then say "oh no, how'd this happen!" C'mon.
All press is good press.

once it has started..just let it carry on campcom :)
Dear Site Users,
I strongly believe that majority of you are complete idiots because many of you believe that Ono-san is responsible and deserves to be punish for doing is job. Trolling or keeping the targeting market engaged through mystery strategy is not a bad thing because Capcom has been doing this since the inception of Street fighter IV and this strategy has been passed on to MVC 3.
If Capcom wants their content to be relocked and out of sight they have every right because no one knows the contractual agreement been made between Capcom and Arcade operators. However, thanks to common sense, it is apparent that those characters had specified dates to be unlocked and there has been a breach in contract - the Arcade operators the agreement made and now Capcom is requesting them to fulfill their promise. If they don't, however, well I guess Capcom future businesses with Capcom would be difficult.
In conclusion, STOP blaming Ono-san for doing his job because he's not directly linked to the problem but the individual/individuals that leaked out said codes and the Arcade Operators that go against the contract.
God you people are stupid. Obviously E.Ryu and Oni were meant to regenerate hype for the game after the initial buzz died down. When AE was released, people were interested in Yun/Yang and the balance changes. Even now a lot of the buzz from that has quieted.
So after a few months, E.Ryu and Oni drop and people get interested again and come back. But because they were hacked early, the buzz for them would die together with Yun/Yang and the arcades have nothing to lure players back with.
"You're an idiot Oracle, nobody cares about these waste of space characters.". Oh yeah? Read the article again.
"As soon as news broke out about the unlocked characters, Pro SF Fighters traveled far and wide to get their hands on 'em. Some, who I know personally, have broke night playing these characters non-stop."
Imagine how good that would have been for the arcades if that had happened 2-3 months from now.
Why release a trailer Teasing 2 characters just about a month before you release it and not expect anyone to question "WTF?"
OKay, so the minute AE comes out, everyone is just suppose to forget that "Hey there are 2 characters missing!" of course they're gonna look for them! Even people like Kilian giving us crap answers like "Ahh or IS his name really Oni?" Instead of punishing people for figuring things out on there own, you should be rewarding them. They wanted to see what you had to offer enough to open the game up and say "Look what we found!"
Its not like they downloaded the characters Illegally.
I'm actually surprised it took this long for them to initiate action. I thought this was a whole spiel to hype up the official announcement of "xxx and yyy" but if in fact is isn't then this really hurt the marketing plan. I was looking forward to the execution of their plan because Capcom does an amazing job with that kind of stuff. Maybe their contingency plan can take this whole ordeal and work it in their favour. Relocking being the first step.
What's next capcom try to take the cabinets away get a life Capcom I spent my hard earned money on the Cabinet I can do what I want with it.
If you're gonna put in Violent Ken, you're gonna have to put in Iori from KoF.
@cvs
Not really. Ken is still property of Capcom. There would be a lotta copyright loopholes, but I'm pretty sure Capcom can use Violent Ken if they want to.
@AcidGlow
No, he wasn't. Violent Ken was created when Ken somehow got the Orochi that's inside Iori into him. Similar to how Evil Ryu was created when the Dark Hadou got into him.
its obvious their goal was to sit on these two to build hype back up after it died off but at this point the only thing they are going to do now is piss people off and actually hurt the arcades
you cant put the genie back into the bottle and expect people to get all hyped again 3 months from now when they get unlocked again...
It's nothing like downloading characters illegally. Arcade owners aren't required to pay to unlock these two characters. It's not like Capcom is losing any money over it. They're just pissed about the leaks. I understand why they're pissed though, unlike 99% of users on Eventhubs. People need to understand that it's never a good thing for a company when info leaks, no matter how happy you are with the leak.
As for Ono's trolling, Seth avoiding questions, etc. It's their JOB. Do you really expect someone to ask, "Is Sentinel going to be in MvC3?" and them to respond, "Yeah, dude!" Of course not. If you have any common sense, you should know that. They're not allowed to give out any information at all, which is why they're pissed about the characters leaking.
So um...since the "Hype-reboot" has already been released...why don't they just...leave them unlocked?
C'mon, we KNOW the deal, Capcom. It's already done, don't be sour about this. Look at how many people flocked, *FLOCKED* to Arcades JUST to play as these TWO characters! Don't be stupid! Let the coins drop down the chute and get the money! You want SSF4 to be popular after MvC3? It WILL be! I don't have a local arcade to go to, but I speak for those who do...don't be jerks.
Why the hell would Ono be fired? Weren't they discovered via hacking or something like that? Surely that's not his fault by any stretch of imagination.
@#59 to purchase a product is to be given full right to use it, destroy it, sell it back, etc. and if the 2 said characters were NOT in the chipset at the time of purchase then yes it is downloading the characters illegally. ah, but look, they were in the coding the whole time and after the transaction is complete and no legal forms holding the characters locked til april/june/whenever signed, and as far as everyone know there wasn't except the the order form for SSFAE, the consumer has every right to use their product anyway they want. Now, capcom is "asking" business to lock down the product that's fine but arcades do not have to comply to such demands
pfft.. Ono's trolling was going to catch up with him eventually glad it did... payback is a b. Also there was more hype with there leaks and people going to arcades like #63 mentioned why derail it honestly there was more hype on those two than MVC3 that once they become "official" people are going to be meh... There just salty that japanese players didn't get to play them first
By the way, I wish Catalyst of all people would explain why Capcom can't let out information when asked or why it's retarded to think that Ono deserved this crap or other retarded comments on this website. I'm not telling you how to run it, Catalyst, I'm just giving you advice on how to run it better.
This is crazy. If they want to re hype AE then announce new/returning characters not Evil ryu and Oni. I can care less about AE right now. Yun and Yang I'm not interested in. Well maybe Yang because I like Fei.
Bring us Karin and Alex or any other character that fans have been asking for not some rehashed shoto clone with less stamina and evil looking.
Why has 'damage' been done? Why is this a bad thing? They've created immense hype for SSF4 AE. TONS of people (me included) have found Evil Ryu and Oni to be downright awesome. If anything, this has alleviated our fears that they would be slightly modified clones...
If anything, I'm going to buy SSF4 AE for PS3 the day it becomes available, DLC or not and I'm sure that many others will as well...
So tell me again, why is this damage? It's not like they just leaked that Sentinel was going to be added to SSF4 AE or something :P. Because now that... would be damage...
@74 i know Yang plays nothing like fei. I just like the fact that he has rekkas or has something similar to that but not necessarily a clone. much like Karin as well.
So what? It's still leaking info. It's information that the public shouldn't know, at least not yet. There's such a thing as releasing information too early. Remember when 3S was announced? That was basically a year ago. As Sven said, it was announced too early. Now, the public has to wait for God knows how long for it to finish developing and releasing. The same can be said for the leaking of these characters.
so tired of reading what characters people "hope" will be added, "ooh i want my rolento" "i really hope the next character is karin" well the bad news is capcom arnt a company that takes your super special hopes and makes them into awesome video game characters complete with rainbow moves especially for you! all the idiots who post on things like this saying "no more shoto clones", there is probably good reason why capcom put them in the game i.e. they are popular and exciting, capcom knew they would generate hype and guess what? THEY DID!! stop slating capcom for making the effort with their games
Actually Jerry key difference is this game is basically done as compared to when 3s was announced. Now the leak I'm 50/50 but it was more hype watching this story unfold than reading a stupid tweet or waiting a month after mvc3 for a hype vid. Also it's a double edge sword say they never leaked them and they went ahead with this plan and no one cared due to other games being out at the moment the leak was good because it's a slow gaming month the only real game out is dead space 2 so from a certain standpoint they should have ran with it.
Sorry writen from iPhone...
Crappy news.
Anyone know how the characters were actually unlocked in the first place? I hear a lot of talk about a 'code' where do they insert it, how'd anyone find it out, was it AI or Human?
I think it's pretty odd that you can purchase a video game,(in this case a 17k cabinet)unlock features within that game which were added by the program team and then forced to remove it. Lame
Thanks people!
@86
There was a small code of letters, numbers, and symbols that I think was entered at the menu of the cabinet before booting up. I don't know how they found it, but I heard it was hobbyists who do this sort of thing with hidden content in arcade cabinets (for example, songs in dance games) all the time.
I agree with #47 and #49
You are all trolling and talking garbage about Ono yourselves, when the guy was simply doing his job, teasing and advertising the game.
And when you actually see footage of Evil Ryu and Oni, you still all complain because you think they are carbon copies of the originals when they both have different attributes to their style. But no, all we hear from you guys is:
"Broken"
"Ugh..more shotos!?"
"Capcom wasted space"
Here's a fun fact for you all: You don't work with Capcom or its production team for the game therefore you aren't in charge of what you want to have in it. Try working for them and then work on that. I understand Capcom is definitely not the most favorable production company in gaming recently but still, they did a good job with Evil Ryu and Oni, ESPECIALLY in terms of balancing them out. You can beat them as if they are any other character in the game. Not like they are Shin Akuma in SSF4 and you can play in them in that fashion.
What I would guess is, most of you complaining about "MORE SHOTOS" don't know how to fight against them. Or at least an experienced one.
But I digress.
It is completely idiotic for Capcom to retract Evil Ryu and Oni now that they have been released. There is honestly no point now that we've all seen what they can do. Supposedly there was a linked CODE for every arcade that had the game, and if that's true, one of the workers must have gotten a hold of it, used it and shared it with others. Which ISN'T in anyway ONO's fault. IF this is the theory, then Capcom should have been smarter and held onto that code until the release date came around.
Well Capcom should know better, we live in a very different time. Things like secret character reveals and unlocks don't stand a chance in a world filled with Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Capcom needs to get up with the times and tighten security, they probably should just throw character reveal teasers out the window.
They should scrap Oni and E.Ryu altogether.
Oni's Raging Demon and air hadouken Ultras should be given to Akuma to serve as an ultra and super respectively while his air dash should be given to the more fitting characters like Rose or Bison who can both hover because it looks like a gimmick on Oni. Anyway, I think Rose is more deserving of an air dash as she's a pretty boring character who could use a hook.
E.Ryu is pretty much Akuma minus the air hadouken, so not much there. Maybe his Ultra 2 should be given to Gouken, whose ultra lack originality. Come to think about it, Oni has that stomp like move which could suit Gouken as a demon flip follow up.
@91 if anything E. Ryu is the only carbon copy just Akuma with Ryu combos this was the same as A3 so in a way he is a wasted slot as compared to oni
@91 and Shoto fans
I really like how shoto fans reach out to defend the shoto characters to the end and while im sure it's a happy day for you guys a lot of us are simply sick and tired of fighting shoto clones, period. It's not that people can't beat them, people are just tired of fighting them as I am sure many people are. When you throw in a lazy concept that revolves around the same fighting moves as existing characters they just end up more powerful versions of that character (Or weaker). To me thats just not fun and when you know there is an entire roster of street figther characters not tapped into yet, you feel kind of cheated.
I have always been a person who likes variety in my games; the more original the better, thats why I've always loved Street Fighter 3 and it's cast of characters. I was hoping SFIV would go that route but it seems to have failed to appeal to old school fans even though I like the inclusion of Guy at least.
And you can spare me the whole "Well if you don't like it don't play it." I probably will stop, im more hyped for MvC3 which has a huge assortment of orignal characters and old to keep me busy. But I just wanted to correct a few of you shoto lovers that a lot of us don't hate shotos we are just tired of fighting them and I can't get hyped over this, im sure thats not too hard to understand.
Flame on...
Actually, this was a good marketing move by Capcom, although I'm upset with not being able to play as either character anymore. Think of it this way, the only money capcom makes from the A.E. Cabinets in the USA was when the arcade decided to purchase the cabinet. Therefore, relocking evil ryu and oni isn't so capcom can make more money off A.E. plays. In Japan, the characters were not unlocked, thus their customers in Japan are dissatisfied. The arcade scene is bigger in Japan then it is in America. On top of that, let's assume that the two characters are supposed to come out along the supposed (but not officially confirmed) A.E. Dlc. Now lets say they decide to charge for the dlc. By having the characters unlocked prematurely, Capcom could think that customoers will be like "eh I already played these two a ton at the arcade, i really don't care for arcade edition now." Thus they lose money, so the only people making money off Oni and Evil Ryu at this moment were the Arcades, NOT Capcom.
Also as a side note, to all those saying that oni and evil ryu are just broken versions of their original selves, did you actually play as them or are you just assuming that the fact that it is Evil RYU that he must play like RYU and since you have Oni Akuma, he must play JUST LIKe AKUMA because then you're wrong. They play completely different from their original selves (especially Oni being a strange character) and thus they are deemed fit. I tried these guys out at the arcade and they are not broken. There moves appear ridiculous, but certainly not broken. You'll see what I mean when (or if) A.E. dlc comes out :)
@ 96.
Don't blame those who play as shotos for the decisions made by capcom. There is plenty of variety in each shoto character. You just choose not to see it in depth. All you see is hadoukens and shoryukens, when in reality each shoto has a different way of performing combos, zoning strategy and setups.
I can definitely see what you were saying about facing a bunch of shotos whether it'd be online or in real life. Back when Vanilla was out, it was all about Ryu, Ken and Akuma most of the time. Especially Ryu. But if you haven't noticed, the usage of Ryu dropped severely when Super came out. Nowadays I see people playing as Cody, Dudley or Ibuki. Even Adon! Jeez Adon takes it.
And what on earth do you mean it doesn't appeal to old school fans?
The fighting system is traditionally the same as ST, all those characters from ST were added. And don't try to correct me on the term Old School cause 3rd Strike is not that old compared to it's predecessor. You're just another person whining about the characters you want in the game that you have no creative input over. I see a lot of people whine about new characters, new content, blah blah blah, and still complain when they don't get EXACTLY what they want. Majority of the SSF4 fanbase enjoyed seeing the potential that E. RYU and Oni have. And now you are again another person who has to live with the fact that you didn't get what you want.
Oh and one other note: if you still want some hope to hold onto, there is that rumor that there are two other characters to be added to the game after them.
I dont hate ryu, I hate that in 10 damn matches a figh 5 ryus or more, I mean, back fireball, c.mk into hadouken all the day, and now they add a better version of ryu, I dont say broken but he will be better than ryu and isnt low or medium tier, oni seems more unique but still another fireball? another shoryu with 3 frames and high invencibility? damn
so for all the people "shoto defenders" we dont hate ryu or evil ryu, we hate fight them over and over
@#96:
I kinda get what you're saying. I was once a shoto whore (back in vanilla and couple of months after SSFIV came out). Then I realized it got boring. Not because I played against a lot of shotos but because it's the same combos for ryu and akuma. So I started playing guile for a little bit. Guile then came dudley. Dudley then came cody. After that, came gouken. I'm still playing my new alts as of right now and I'm actually having fun believe it or not. My new alts aren't pro quality by any means but I know how to utilize their specials and normals to anti-air or poke and as well as fadc and non fadc combos with them. Also I started to use my abel again (I used abel as well back when I was a shoto whore). So yea, if anyone plays me, you'll definitely get a variety of characters to fight against. I will occassionally pick my shotos just so I remember how to use them. So there are seven characters to play agsinst anyone:)
Oh I forgot to add sagat to my list. That makes eight!
Well it comes down to player preference in the end like I said I only dislike e Ryu because he's just a hybrid not game changing as ONI is but then again that's just me still the derailed the hype machine that I feel won't be as strong in the second go around
I still fail to see how it was Ono's fault, unless he legitimately leaked out the code or information himself. If anything, Capcom should have higher data security team to begin with. It's like almost every rumor they announce ends up being confirmed.
Heck, they could have easily done the DLC gig, a USB data transfer, or a separate data storage so that they won't have. It may cost some arcade vendors some money on tech services, but it shouldn't be as much unlike people having knowledge to have them and decrease the potential lasting appeal.
I'm curious on how Capcom and their Capcops are going to enforce this relock rule. What? Capcom's going to hire a outsider / normal person to spy on their local arcades? I'm also curious on the terms and agreement each arcade owner had to sign or agree upon in order to purchase AE. Maybe Ultradavid can dig this up by chance? I saw his article on SRK and it's interesting in behind the entertainment laws and copyrights that are out there.
Another note, if I was Capcom, I'll take this as lesson learned and move on. When the COMPLETE product is out in the public, it's going to get disected and hacked. Just like all the other electronics out there today. Iphones, PS2 and 3, Xbox and 360 (I consider Mod versions as hacked) to name a few. For all we know I'm sure someone (on this planet) probably tried to hack into a soda machine haha.
My and probably a lot of other people's guess is Capcom was planning to hype SF fans with Oni and E Ryu AFTER MvC3 came out. Well that didn't work. If they want to try another attempt, I say add a little more to the DLC versions. It's rumored DLC AE comes out in June or something. Let say for the sake of this conversation that it is true. They have another five months or so to add another stage or more moves. Who knows. I'm just throwing ideas out there.
Why is capcom so pissy about this whole situation? I know it interfered with their plans, but as it's been said, roll with it. I'm pretty sure everyone and their brother wants to play these characters, and seeing Oni sealed the deal for AE for me.
I would love that AE gets released for consoles in time for EVO though.
That would be SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET.
So the rest of the public could keep up a little, like a month or a little more in advance.
And.... ye capcom would not only gain more money , they would get probably more viewers, cause people wants to see
THE NEW REBALANCED SSFIV WITH 2 BRAND NEW CHARACTERS!!!!
So it isnt stupid at all to release that goddamn dlc.
Side note , 2 more characters would be fun tho , no ? :)
Capcom is most definitely aware of EVO and I doubt any characters (Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu, Oni, and anyone else) won't be out before then. The June rumor sounds plausible, rekindle interest in the game after Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and give everyone a little under 2 months to get ready.
#17> I agree the troll got what he deserved
if Alex from SF3 doesn't make it to SSF4AE I hope Ono gets in trouble just like that again
I can understand how Capcom would want them locked again but I am failing to see how this is Ono's fault.
