A short, but informative article was posted by VideoGamer.com this morning explaining why Frank West was cut from Marvel vs. Capcom 3's roster, as explained by Ryota Niitsuma. It reads:
"As for Frank West, he was actually in the process quite deep, and in one of our high quality CG trailers he was actually part of it," Niitsuma told VideoGamer.com at the end of last week. "But we've taken him out, due to the fact that we've foreseen some extra work involved, just from the nature of his moves. We felt we could direct our resources to better use, so we've taken Frank out."
Another Capcom favourite who hasn't made the line-up is plucky lawyer Phoenix Wright. But while Wright may not be naturally suited to the fighting genre, Niitsuma seems happy to consider his future inclusion - provided that MvC3 gains a following.
"Phoenix Wright is obviously a famous franchise - especially in Europe, actually. It would be interesting to see him, although he distinctively lacks the number of moves he might have [in a fighting game]. But if Marvel vs. Capcom 3 does well, he's definitely up on the list as one of the characters to add, given the chance."
So it sounds like Frank West was in the episode 2 trailer, but was cut at some point after wards, and that Phoenix Wright has a shot at being a DLC fighter.

I don't get it. If wright didn't have a moveset for tvc and mvc3 what can they possibly do? How much time do they need? Pw fans say its a bs excuse =0 i never played a game with pw but he is easily the most requested so i hope he shows up just for that reason.

@Otter_of_Death Well Ms. Marvel used to be a U.S. Airforce officer so she's probably been in a war or too. (Unless you want to count the Secret Invasion as a war against the Skrulls)
And yes, Frank should definitely be DLC. If time constraints were really an issue as to Frank being cut, then there's absolutely no reason not to consider him for DLC since most of the work is already done for them.
I don't know why I'm surprised, capcom seems to love disappointing people. Like with RE5. I hope Frank and Phoenix make it as dlc. Even for those who don't like them, they're unique and wacky fighters who haven't really been big in the fighting genre. It's the same as Smash Bros including characters like Ice Climbers or Jigglypuff, who you wouldn't usually see in a fighting game.

It IS hard to make a moveset but hey, if they got the idea for frank tatsunoko vs Capcom then they should be able to do phoenix, Heck Phoenix was a missing character who WAS gonna be in it so Capcom will think of something.
Same story as with some fighters not being able to be included in SF IV but then they made it in SSF IV. In this case i am almost certain they kept Frank West back as well as perhaps Phoenix Wright just so they can release them as future DLC to keep the interest in the game going.
So let me get this straight... We might see him as DLC but they did take him out.
Bummer that Frank West wasn't included, I was a big fan of Dead Rising and I was really hyped for him from what I saw in the trailers. Like others have said, if he's in such an advanced state, hope they just add him in DLC.
And since when was Hakan a disappointment? Last time I checked, people always seem to reference "seriously" and "it's time to oil up".

You say phoenix wright is a wasted slot i say akuma(unique?) is. we got ryu no need for another. everyone has own taste and if phoenix is capcoms 2nd most requested(after strider) then adding him will bring loads of cash..its a no brainer. and no ones forcing you to buy him so go and play your akuma!

Also, personally I'd rather have Chuck Greene over Frank. Frank's nice and all but Chuck's combo weapons could make for some really nasty moves. The Paddlesaw could be used like Wolverine's BBX super, and the Blitzkrieg could be a good keep away move
If Frank is coming back he'll have a new fight style since that old one was not working.

Frank will probably be DLC when you consider that it would be an easy thing for them to do.
If he was in a dev build of the game at one point and then taken out, that implies that they at the very least put some work into him already. All they'd have to do is finish whatever they didn't and package him with some Marvel character they also wanted in but didn't make the cut, and there you go; easy DLC.
This is pretty ridiculous. When his silhouette was revealed NOBODY everyone was in an uproar that frank west was taking up space and he wasnt popular, and now everyone is crying foul and whining. Oh the internets.
What the hell? This makes no sense as to why Frank wasn't included. He was in TvC, i don't see any reason why he can't just be ported like Zero, Ryu, and Chun were. Not good enough of an excuse!
I am stoked to hear Phoenix Wright may make it in! But it would get rather confusing when calling Phoenix since...theres 2 now.
out of every Marvel and Capcom character in existence I hoped that Frank West would be in more than anyone else. And for a while that was going to be true. But he was removed because it seemed like he would take a fair amount of time to create, and under a time constraint it would have been a smarter business decision to cut him from the initial roster and utilize that time and other things. After the game is released, and now without a formal deadline, I'm sure Capcom will have the time to make Frank ready for the fight. He's also partially worked on, so it shouldn't be too much. I was one of the original Phoenix Wright supporters, so if he gets in I'd be ecstatic. And maybe Cyclops, too?

it's not a Capcom license nor creation . No way they'd bother getting a license again for such an high profile and famous manga just so one or two chars could appear in an unrelated VS game .
dead rising was a bad game, so I don't see why they like Frank so much. Probably because here in America it was kinda popular. And I would much rather see Gene, Vergil, Bass. EXE, Demetri, John Talbain and a few others then PW, but I wouldn't mind him. He has a lot of fans so why not?
I am more interested in who the Marvel character that got cut was....Someone had to be paired with Frank. So that Marvel character we will probably see as DLC

Most of the people who want Phoenix Wright in the game are not even fighting game fans, so there's no point adding him to the game. The last thing we need are characters added to the game for no other reason than because they are Internet memes. Niitsuma already explained why he didn't include Mega Man, so adding Phoenix Wright would prove to be very hypocritical.
To hell with Frank West and Phoenix Wright 2 wack ass characters why do people act like they care so much for them you know what's gonna happen if they were added they will select Phoenix chuckle for 5 sec when he scream objection on 1 of his move realize they can't win with that character and move on to somebody else on the roster
Instead bring characters that people are asking for that they will actually use and stick with them as a team like Strider Hiryu Captain Commando and Mega Man real characters
I like Vergil as much as the next guy, but I don't understand why everyone is clamoring for him in this game. Yeah, he's cool, but even in DMC3, most of his moves are just slightly toned down versions of Dante's. And since they're twins, there's really no point either. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see him in the game, but he would definitely be taking up a slot that could be better utilized by a more unique character.
Though if he was to replace Trish, that'd be a fine decision.

Not too many people have requested Vergil to be included, at least from what I've seen. I'm a big fan of his, but even though his moveset is quite different than Dante's in DMC3, I wouldn't want him in the game over someone who deserves the spot more. It would be like adding Akuma to the game. ;)
I think the real issue is that its CAPCOM.
Marvel Characters are typical and are easy to tell their movesets and how they fight because we see them in the comics, some people care more about them because they know the characters.
Capcom characters are more diverse and its Capcoms job to put characters we wont normally see in a fighting game, Some people care about seeing outragouse characters actually fighting which is what Capcom is doing.
I mean I was pretty shocked seeing Frank west in Tatsunoko vs capcom and Tron Bonne in MVC2, and The Freakin Sun goddess in a wolfs body Amataresu is in MVC3 and yet their movesets were great.
To be Honest, this is all fan service, all you "Hardcore" players need to pay attention to the MOVESETS rather than the characters identities and decide what you want.
So in reality it doesnt matter, your all gonna care about the movesets and then make your teams, other people will do it out of characters they like. So be it, let everyone get have what they want, the fans get the characters, and the Players get the awesome movesets.
Since its Phoenix Wright were talking about, Its capcoms job to make a very unique moveset and he'll probably be a good character in terms of his moveset, we'll see what happens.
I want frank west back, his moves on TvC were awesome!

In a Capcom poll in Japan, Vergil was the second most requested character after X, so obviously a lot of people are asking for him ;). Though I don't understand why... he wouldn't add much to the game.
In my opinion, if Phoenix Wright gets a move-set, they need to add Aunt May and give her a move-set. Fair is fair.

Do you really think that the people asking for Phoenix Wright would really care about him being top tier material?
Altho I could care less if Phoenix Wright were to make it in or not, I'm not going to act like his lack of fighting experience has any burden on a game like MvC3. If Capcom really wanted to include him in, they could really make him a viable character and still appeal to his character.
If anyone were to make the roster, I'd hope for Vergil. He has a lot potential as a viable character for this game.
well i know who frank west is and i used him and polimar in TvC and he was fun to use.
he was a good idea for a character since he could literally use anything to kill a zombie. he would definitly be more weapon oriented and Chuck Green was also very weapon oriented with the gimmick of combining items.
i can also understand why megaman was deconfirmed.
i also dont know if people listen or read, but STRIDER IS NOT GOING TO BE SELECTABLE OR ANYTHING. they already said his mechanics didnt work well in this game's engine AND he is also a licensing ordeal and like ive said before, i think Capcom would rather only pay Marvel royalties and not another company or whatever
i am curious to see who they have in mind for DLC besides Jill and Shuma. Maybe Electra and Venom. i have a small hope for Thanos since i have been playing as him recently ( plus he is the main villain in super hero squad season 2)
overall though, im very happy with the diverse characters and will have to try everyone
Vergil could add plenty to the game, if they could put PW in, they could make Vergil vary from Dante. Besides some of you need to go replay DMC3, he has his own move and his own fighting style from Dante, dunno what your talking about :(

Since he was put off so late in devopment, he better be free DLC. Him being like 8bucks is like paying for on the disk DLC. personally...i feel both sides have failed to listen to much of the fan base...im not impressed by the characters chosen in the game, and feel they coulda came a lot stronger, granted, i was shocked and excited to hear dante made the cut as well as phoenix (jean grey)...but i was still hopin for a megaman (preferably X) and some onimusha characters. and marvel has so many to choose from as far as villains go...im still rooting for apocalypse and hell id even like to see pyro...i think marvel was a lil stingy in this go around

This is usually where i disagree . Marvel gave a diverse cast along with plenty key characters from it's current biggest lines : Avengers , X-Men , Spider-man with only a limited set of obscure oddballs .
How many around here are currently reading comics ? And how many are just fighting fans won over by MvC with a universal yet limited knowledge of Marvel comics ?
Marvel can't just only please the later and stick to the same old guys popular back in the 90s to cater to them . Of course they'll require Capcom to add new popular kids and/or characters they wanna push because relevant to their current stuff .
Take x-23 , every time we hear complaints about her inclusion over cool but now obsolete marvel chars no longer famous since the 90s .
She's been proeminent in the X-verse for the last few years and has been successful enough to still have a comics running as we speak .
zarathos im one of those people. i just play MvC series or any versus series by Capcom because they are more easily accessible and well i like those games. i dont know who the task master is, but i do know some well very limited info on some of the marvel stuff.
and yeah i mean yeah it sucked marvel only wanted to use popular characters, but i wouldnt say they are being lazy. neither side is lazy one reason or another they didnt make it.
i mean ppl still complain that silver surfer isnt going to be in it and they have said that they couldnt find a way to implement his surfboard. he would basically be iceman from the last game.
@zarathos: i see your point, at some point mixing old with the new is good. and trust, im a big marvel fan, especially x-men...and of course the avengers...but im saying give others shine time. i know they got the big movies comin up and wanna promote thor and the avengers, but you can still pick popular marvel chrctrs. and still be diff, like Blade (whom a lot of people i know forget is part of the marvel fam) or the punisher or maybe add some favorites from ultimate alliance 1&2 and capcom, like i said before, had more franchises to choose from...onimusha, mega man x series, monster hunter, lost planet, some other darkstalker's favorites like jon talbon, lord raptor and demitri and some new blood from super street fighter. i understand that they wanted to touch a wide fanbase but i feel they didnt reach our far enough...
