Footage from Capcom Japan Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition tourney

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • January 21, 2011 at 2:11 a.m. PST
Capcom posted 4+ hours of Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition footage to one of their YouTube channels from a recent Japanese tournament held at Akihabara on January 15, 2011.

This was one of the events listed on the main Japanese SSF4 AE blog, and the videos below feature a number of terrific players who came in to participate.

The audio is a bit sketchy in parts, and there are some dead periods, so you'll want to skip around a bit, but there are some great matches in here. Hit the jump to see all four parts of this event.

If you don't have the time to watch all of this, make sure you check out the first clip below, as it features an excellent match between a Guy and M. Bison (Dictator).

That first match between Guy and Bison was so GDLK. Especially the ending.

You guys saw the mistake he made, right?

Didn't scissor kick enough. Most Bison players forget to use the scissor kick. If only he had used the scissor kick more. Then maybe he would have beaten that Guy player. Why oh why did he not use scissor kick more? Tell me damnit!

My god, that ending on Guy vs Bison. Advanced sh!t.

That first vid was epic! It's like watching guy and bison actually fighting - no holds barred, no stupid turtling. Rush down guy and bison are where it's at.

I just wish I could combo and FADC like that guy player... must go to training mode immediately.

In the second video, the Guy vs Cody match, Cody did his throw sand move when knocked down.

Did he have that in ssf4? I don't recall ever seeing it happen, nor do I recall reading notes that Cody got his sand throw move.

Can someone confirm?

Thank you Eventhubs, for posting an incredible match with a fantastic ending. That ending made me pee a little.

@Artiskan

where are you looking? I don't see any hugo icons, maybe you should give a specific time to look for lool.

@Gemakai

yes, cody does have that move in SSF4, its called "BAD SPRAY" can only be used on a techable knockdown.

Totally jacking that overhead cancel into lp bushin flip. Funny how everyone kept falling for it. See overhead think stand get grabbed before your brain figures out whats going on.

#17
Gemakai said on January 21, 2011 at 7:20 a.m.

@GUNNAH_MAN

Thanks. I never see it used, so it's new to me. Is it not very good?

#18
GUNNAH_MAN said on January 21, 2011 at 7:38 a.m.

@Gemakai

its not very useful, start up on the move is bad, it can't break armour so it can be focused, its also unsafe so its punishable from the right distance and can be jumped over if people are anticipating it, its only real use it has is suprise, not a move to be used often.

#19
Gemakai said on January 21, 2011 at 7:46 a.m.

@GUNNAH_MAN

That's a shame. It might give Cody players some better wake up skills if it at least hit multiple times so focus wasn't a issue.

Ah well

mrAE3 said on January 21, 2011 at 9:01 a.m.

This first vid just proves that bison is cheap. That scissor kick should have got nerf instead of U2. With bison, all you have to do to win is spam this move. On the other hand, guy require actual skill to win with. The guy in this vid showed some spectacular skill! Guy is 1 of my mains for this reason- I don,t enjoy cheap wins.

BTW, I'm not trying to say that the bison player isn't good (obviously he's a pro player), I'm just criticizing CAPCOM for not making bison slightly more technical.

#21
powderedtoastman said on January 21, 2011 at 9:22 a.m.

@#6
I see the hugo icon

@#15 GUNNAH_MAN

You can see a hugo icon first video(guy vs bison) about 1:50 in, pause if you have too. Looks like the same face of him in the background of the construction stage.

Yup there's a hugo icon. And yes bison is boring:)
High lvl guy is fun to watch.

#24
xShonuffx said on January 21, 2011 at 9:58 a.m.

#23 Bisons light sissor kick got nerfed so it pushes him back a bit, givng the player enough time to react to a grab if he tries SC - tick - grab shenannigans.

To be fair though as awsome as the guy player was he misssed a l ot of opporunities and he beame very predictable at times. He did mix it up a little.

#25
Bushinryuken said on January 21, 2011 at 10:03 a.m.

The coolest thing out of these videos was at the end of Densetsu Otaku's fight with Bison where he does EX run < Ultra 2. Nice for Guy to have such a good answer to scissor pressure!

#26
Bushinryuken said on January 21, 2011 at 10:04 a.m.

- Meant to say "Densetsu no Otaku"

#27
Firegod said on January 21, 2011 at 10:04 a.m.

it looked to me like guys ex move actually absorbed 2 hits....i thought ex moves only obsorbed one hit...

#28
Bushinryuken said on January 21, 2011 at 10:10 a.m.

@ Firegod - They've upgraded his EX run in AE. What he did was brand new. Guy can absorb more than one hit with his run armor now.

#29
powderedtoastman said on January 21, 2011 at 10:12 a.m.

guy and fuerte both have that option to absorb like 2-3 hits on there running moves.

#30
Bushinryuken said on January 21, 2011 at 10:13 a.m.

@Powderedtoastman - Yeah, I believe Alex Valle/Eventhubs reported a while ago that Guy and Fuerte both have 3 hit hyper armor now when they run. Before Guy only had 1 hit and lost it the minute he chose an option out of run. He got considerably buffed in that regard!

#31
powderedtoastman said on January 21, 2011 at 10:17 a.m.

And Btw NEVER use that ex run on gief lariat... EVER. you can lose about half a life bar doing so. I learned the hard way.

MadnessFamilyguile said on January 21, 2011 at 10:46 a.m.

@23 you trolling?

Just i came from the other thread where rufus was "cheap"because people don't know how he works, now it's bison.

Guy players should be so happy, that dropping elbow seems to have quite abit of stun on it now. If only they could keep the buffs to characters that needed it like cody, guy,makoto,hakan,deejay and keep out the stupid nerfs to blanka,guile,cammy...then this would be a really good game and i'd be excited about playing it

#35
GUNNAH_MAN said on January 21, 2011 at 10:54 a.m.

I think cody just needs faster walk speed (close to balrog's), reduced start up on zonk and aleast make bad spray safe. right now im playing with his fake stone, you can actualy cancel into it so maybe theres some more combo/mix up opportunities to be found.

yes I main cody but if alex or karin is in console AE I might have to change lool

#36
Natzu_AC said on January 21, 2011 at 10:59 a.m.

@ 4

The reason why he is not abusing it are a lot of different factor. The first one is the distance has changed after the block stunt thus he can't abuse it has before he needs to be really deep. cr.lk got nerfed because u can hit now before it was hard because the hurt box wasn't at the tip of bison boot.

Also Guy has now some what decent poke with s.mp or s.mk so perhaps it can shut down Bison pressure and Guy cr.lk is 3f now.

#37
BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on January 21, 2011 at 11 a.m.

@23

what are you 12? stop please no more cheap this and spam that. were all sick of it. if you dont like the game then dont play. dont cry about it so Capcom can nerf another character because you suck. play the game, learn the game. nothing wrong with any characters. no one is broken or cheap. deal with it kid.

#38
BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on January 21, 2011 at 11:05 a.m.

i actually like the Bison "nerf" (if you must) to the lk scissors. it pushes you back further so incase your opponent doesnt mash out DP and you poke something out you wont get hit

#39
MrPjSyrup said on January 21, 2011 at 11:08 a.m.

even though this guy is so godlike i dont think he knows he can escape bison scissor pressure with ex run... it absorbs 2 hits and if Vega (Bison) tries to cancel a normal into scissors guy can ex slide b4 the second hit of scissors connects... even if bison ex crusher while pressuring his opponent.. guy will slide under it getting him out of the corner... if guy used ex run more then he would of conditioned bison to try and grab him out of it then guy can just hit him with an overhead... EX RUN People its very useful especially against cammy ... even if she os Ultra he will still get away

#40
MrPjSyrup said on January 21, 2011 at 11:16 a.m.

it looks like this guy was saving it for the end to punish with ultra cuz he only tried it twice... i would of done that as soon as i saw scissor kick pressure to make vega (Bison) hesitate the entire set of matches when i have meter giving me the advantage of running away or going right back to pressuring him yet again it is 50 - 50 .. i like 50 - 50 :D

#41
Firegod said on January 21, 2011 at 11:58 a.m.

@Bushinryuken

Thanks for the info didnt know that.

Watched the first hour long vid and I have to say that this is the most entertainment ive had from SSF4 in a long time. So many diffrent matchups and not one match was horrible (cept that dan v sagat match....)

Noone seems overly cheap, and that Makoto omg that Makoto! SSFAE is seeming very very awsome right now.

#42
powdertoastzman said on January 21, 2011 at 12:13 p.m.

@23 if you have been playin the sf series u will know its always been like that with his scissor kick...just find a way around it there are alot of pokes that will stuff the sk.

#43

#45
x_Who_Is_Alpha said on January 21, 2011 at 12:59 p.m.

@ Bushinryuken and Firegod

It's always had 2 armors, and it still only has 2 armors, its just that now the stop motion is given a third armor.

Also the ex run/slide now has projectile invincibility.

#46
BaroqueObama said on January 21, 2011 at 2:28 p.m.

Oh my god the ending to that Guy/Dictator match was just about the hypest thing I've seen on AE thus far. My face was just like... "D:"

#47
Existent said on January 21, 2011 at 2:40 p.m.

It's like he was getting counter picked nearly every match. Dhalsim, Bison, Zangief, Bison, Zangief, Balrog.

#48
powderedtoastman said on January 21, 2011 at 2:57 p.m.

lol doesnt looked like he was being counter picked, couple of Guy mirrors, ibukis, makotos, codys. there was a handful of variety with guy smashing in faces. That 3 frame crouch lk is looking mighty handy.

#49
Existent said on January 21, 2011 at 3:08 p.m.

Of course he wasn't counter picked every time, but somewhere around half. Balrog, Bison, Dhalsim, Zangief, and Guile are all disadvantageous.

#50
powderedtoastman said on January 21, 2011 at 4:33 p.m.

Eh the ones you listed seemed to be based off current ssf4 match up data. Guy has gotten improved while all them have been toned down. And from the matches he doesnt seem to be at a disadvantage now.
Guy now has an answer to bison scissor kick, double armor and projectile invin on the running slide to go against both sim limb and fireball at the same time. Gief not having the knockdown on exGH seemed to hurt him in the matches show as guy was able to breathe easy and recover. Guile meter building has been toned down and guy has a way to close the gap on ground due to ex run like in sim case.

Guy has more options this time around and crouch lk being faster and stand MK and MP being better pokes helps. Cant be too certain that they are all slightly bad match ups based on ssf4 data.

#51
Existent said on January 21, 2011 at 5:28 p.m.

I mostly based it off of empirical data, my experience, not stat lists. Guile's meter building has relatively little to do with that specific match-up. Ex run isn't an answer to Bison's kicks, it's just a slightly better option than before. Are the matches slightly easier? Probably. Are they still uphill? Almost certainly.

#52
powderedtoastman said on January 21, 2011 at 6:09 p.m.

i was using my experiences with Guy in my assessments, while im not a pro or anything. So somethings may or may not apply to everyone.
The problems i tend to have against guile was him fadcing flash kicks and getting away,booms hitting me in the head while trying to slide under them, and the hozanto timing to go past booms seemed strict. Figure with the changes i mentioned previous this will help him in AE seeing how all of them been tweaked.
And for bison, his scissor kicks push him back a little further and with the ex run+ follow up can hit bison clean. Im sure that would make bison players a bit weary on spamming it when guy has meter.
I gotta get to trying Guy a bit more on the arcade and giving my grapplers a break on wasting cash >_< Hakan doesnt seem to able to take advantage of that stacking oil when people are always on top of you.

#53
RedaSan said on January 21, 2011 at 6:21 p.m.

The more I watch skilled dictator player matches, the more I hate this sick, cheap, monkey-ass character dictator is.
Seriously, beside some random cheap zoning and safe scissor kicks spamming, this character has nothing interesting to offer. It's a shame there actually is some skilled players who'd go out wasting their awesomeness in some ass-stinking character like dictator.
No character in any fighting game should be as easy to win and cheap to play as dictator is in SF4.

I don't recall Bison winning any tournaments....so he's probably "good and cheap" against people who don't truly understand all aspects of the match-up. Bison has some pretty big disadvantages in high level play, including weak anti-air game and no comeback potential.

#58
C2Q said on January 21, 2011 at 9:15 p.m.

Lol @ that last video, this tourny is just full of guy roflstomping everyone.

AceJace2 said on January 21, 2011 at 10:45 p.m.

How do you cancel a move? Because Im trying to have a scond main character. Please help!

#60
RedaSan said on January 22, 2011 at 5:26 a.m.

@60:
You're right, at high level play, Bison is not that good but at low and middle-level play, he is pretty cheap. I know it is mainly my fault for not knowing the match-up enough and having difficulties against dictator but still, he annoys me lol.

@ 57:
After re-reading my comment I understand how you feel lol, I overreacted but you gotta admit bison requires less zoning and execution skills than the others characters. If you're not convinced, check the end of the first video( at 10:40) lol. 6 scissors kicks in a row. If you call that not spamming I wonder what spamming means to you

#61
Nukka said on January 22, 2011 at 8:01 a.m.

@63

That is spamming, but the Guy player could've easily avoided all that chip damage with a single backdash, or by jumping backwords, so not really the bison players fault. You do what works, until the other player can adapt to it, that's how Street fighter is played.

#62
BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on January 22, 2011 at 10:26 a.m.

@63

umm since when is anything in SF4 spamming? if you cant deal with a barrage of scissor kicks, then theres one thing you need to work on. you can simply jump out of it, or in most cases for almost every character you can just poke it to stop. it only looks "cheap" or "spammed" because its high level play. in high level play anything can look unfair. do you have any idea how hard it is to charge scissors that fast? ive played Bison almost my entire life and still cant charge scissors as fast as he can. but anyways this what i say to people like you. if you think Bison is so good then pick him up and play online or in tournaments and lets you see win. come back here with the resluts

#63
BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on January 22, 2011 at 10:32 a.m.

@63

and no Bison doesnt require less zoning skill than most characters. i dont what your talking about, but every fireball character can zone better than him (with the exception of Dan) and theres how many fireball chars in the game? 13! plus not to mention characters who have better AA's then Bison. over all Bison is probably 20th/35 in terms of zoning. hes either a rush down freak or a turtle char. theres better characters to choose from if you want to zone.

#64
RedaSan said on January 22, 2011 at 11:34 a.m.

@64~66
Hum, didn't really though of it that way. I still think Bison is easier to play than others but what you're saying is true.
I Guess Bison just doesnt suit my playstyle.

#65
sgb said on January 22, 2011 at 3:09 p.m.

Not getting the Bison hate. Most characters have some relitively safe move they rely on to pressure, Bison's is scissor kick. It's his primary pressure move. Bison can't fight at long range, he needs to get close while giving his opponent something to think about. SK fills that role. What would you like him to do, use easily punished psycho crushers and headstomps so you can get easy wins? Oh, right Eventhubs players. NM.

#66
weazzyeffffffffffffff said on January 22, 2011 at 10:24 p.m.

Man that Bison sucked. My Bison's better. He fell for heaps of stupid guy tricks. Maybe they not used to guy players over there cos they mostly use arcade.

Followup and Kim1234 and some other Bison i forgot are my Bison idols. Better Bison's than this one. he never even used his knockdowns properly letting Guy just cruise on out haha.

#67
cvs said on January 23, 2011 at 11:31 a.m.

@69 Why don't you fight him and prove it then if he sucks.

#68
Raven said on January 25, 2011 at 9:47 p.m.

That Akuma vs. Balrog match was cold.....Akuma pulled out the demon right in his face. haha

Wow...I can't believe that's El Fuerte after he got nerfed... >_>; Whoever is playing him is an execution GOD.

I must say....Makoto/Yun/Yang look sweet. I need some good Makoto vs. Rog matches. xD

Wow...Guy looks stunning. Crazy combos!

Also, Bison has versatility and mobility, those are his strengths. You have to be patient and wait to punish your opponent, or you can be more of a rush down Bison. Still...Bison has weaknesses that affect him big time at high level play (namely anti-airs and comeback potential).
