On MTV Multiplayer's developer pop quiz series, Capcom's Seth Killian is the man of the hour. This article mostly focuses on Seth's career and opinion of video game industry as a whole, but it also delves into fighting games. What has been the low point of your career?
Seth: Leaked info and ripped games can be pretty heartbreaking. I understand the motivations, and often it comes from your biggest fans that are extremely hungry for information or a chance to play early, but it can really end up hurting the game and a company's relationship with its fans over the long term.
What do you think is the biggest problem current games suffer from?
I think one of the biggest problems with games is language. We don't have great language to talk about so much of what matters most in a game. If you play a platformer with a bad jump, that's simple enough, and it totally sucks, but how can you put that into words that anyone can understand? It's a problem for developers, but it's also a problem for evangelizing games to the wider world that still thinks of them as kid-stuff. As a player you can understand the glory of a game masterpiece from the inside, and share that experience with others on the inside, but how do you translate that experience for someone that isn't going to devote the time in the first place? Film, literature, and even abstract art have been able to do it, but most game discussions still fall flat in terms of translating their glories to people that don't already play.
Okay, so all this Lupinko hate, did he force you guys to read the info? No he didn't. His list on Neogaf was censored so you would have to highlight it so you could see it. He posted the info, but you were the ones who choose to read it. So stop blaming him you retards...
Every time Lupinko leeks information, a half-naked Native American cries exactly one tear.
Are you guys serious right now? You BEG for all the info that gets leaked; you cry and complain when Ono and Seth don't tell you guys anything. You bitch about Ono's constant trolling. So quit bitching about someone leaking info when you all asked for it.
MascotRay has a point. Did they think we weren't going to find out there was a third Darkstalker? Eventually, we were going to... heck, I don't know... BUY the game.
Even Seth Killian has his moments which I do not blame him.
If CRAPCOM respected player / fan, she should stop doing the s.hi.t. stuff makes ONO or Seth.
She as a great company, still treats its customers like children. Yes, she is hiding the game, you see the character doing baby shopping list, to be posting a photo of Blanka on "I.M.B.E.C.I.L.E ONO Twitter", she finds cool.
It's time for CRAPCOM would be making more for production of their games. It's all very stupid. Very Japanese actually.
About Seth is just another worker defending his food dish. Unfortunately as bad link between players and CRAPCOM.
I don' t want waiting two years seeing pictures or news, I want wait two years playing.
I get it but in the case of MvC3, knowing all of the characters early didn't hurt my opinion of the game. I still didn't know exactly how they played, how they effect the game as a whole, and I'm still having fun with them.
The surprises are coming from..well...the actual gameplay, endings, dialogue, etc, and I'm fine with that.
lovely how an article about seth gets you guys talking about lupinko, who for all i know could be any red-headed black kid sitting in a gay bar
Seth has been and still is the #1 fan of the community who made more positive changes than we care to know for the games and the gamers.
all the haters need to try get out of their moms' basement and go to at least one EVO, see for yourself, and learn to stop being so selfishly ignorant to other people's dedication and effort in making our games top of the fighting game genre for almost 20 years
I really felt that second answer from Seth. Games are a large scale form of art that makes use of artwork, music, storytelling, and of course game art design. In a sense, they're kind of on the scale of movies (though obviously not as budgeted).
Unfortunately, it's still relatively young as an art and previous generations disregard it as kiddy, thoughtless mediums for entertainment. And the sad truth is that many gamers don't view their games as art forms at all, which reinforces the stereotype of games being soulless. There are so many things I appreciate about games, but it's hard to share these feelings when gamers themselves hardly scratch the surface of what games mean.
@19 I totally get what you're saying about taking the games seriously and all but you can't ever compare a streamlined and maximumprofit product with an actual piece of art. The difference does not, as you so bluntly put it, lie in the size of the budget, but in the intention and motive of the artist.
I'd love for games to get better storylines, but looking back at Baldur's gate 2´and looking at the games today, I realize that the trend seems to be pointing towards more Halo:NextExtremelyIdioticAndUnneccessarySequel
@22 of course they're milking it, they have a responsibility towards the shareholders or did you think santa's little helpers made your games?
@ #4 exactly I don't see anyone's wallets taking a hit. Matter of fact the DLC profit sees to that.
@ #5 really? Marvel vs Capcom 4? There will probably be another, different crossover series. Either way leaks aren't taking money out of the pockets of the creators. Modded and Pirated games are.
@25, yes i agree with you, however leaks can represent Modded and pirated games as well. Example when a game comes out before its official release date, isn't that a leak?..?.. sure its called being pirated too. "I"m just saying no worries."
My point is Producers such as Capcom high end CEOs dont like this type of stuff, they see this act as a threat to the wallet. Sure they have Loads of cash, but damn they are tight with it. Once they see behavior like this, they can easily say "hey lets work on something else, to much drama going on here with MvsC3."
So please these criminal acts of pirated games, surfacing the walls of finding leaks, just leave it alone.. and yes i would like to see more crossover games as much as you do.
This has reminded me that S-Kill was a philosophy instructor at one point :)
The reason why seth is heartbroken is because he's PR for these games and without the wow factor people aren't scrambling to capcom for answers and he has nothing to hype people up for the next reveal since it's leaked. Basically leaks make sh*t bland and I personally hate leaks because 90% of them usually dash my hopes for a few charater I want in
I'm really hoping the leaker(the person who told lupinko) gets weeded out out of capcom before they leak future productions.
I gotta agree with #11
Now that Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel VS Capcom 3 are out, it's easy to shake the finger at Lupinko and other leakers and take up for S-Kill. You should all go back and read the comments posted on articles from a few months back, however, and see how desperate and hungry everyone was for info. Lupinko was a hero of the people because he fed your needs. Now that S-Kill comes out with this sob story about how leaks kill hype and hurt the developer/consumer relationship, you all are ready to jump ship and burn the leakers at the stake.
The fact of the matter is that when it comes to these reveals, there are failures on both sides of the playing field. Leakers need to realize that they are not only interfering with Capcom's plans when they pull these stunts, but are also ruining a lot of the surprise for the community. Capcom, meanwhile, needs to understand that we are often thirsty for info regarding these games because we're so passionate about them. I know it's not possible to reveal new characters every week, but they need to figure out a better system of revealing info at a faster rate. Waiting a few weeks, dumping 2 characters, a stage, and other info before another month-long drought like what they did with MvC3 doesn't work. And we all know that Ono's trolling worked even less(Seriously, Capcom, put a leash on Ono. He's awful).
In summary, don't shake your finger at Lupinko now that the game is out when all he did was give you exactly what you wanted a few months ago.
I wonder what he's talking about. the roster leak? evil ryu? jill on the disk?
If it were up to me, I'd stand up for Ono and Killian all the way. But I have to say that Capcom is losing customers and they could be on the verge of bankruptcy. Poor ideas, poor marketings. I've been their fan since I was 3 years old and I will not see them get out of business. So get off of your butts and do your job!
@33 everything leaked in general but I agree with 11 & 31 key example when Oni and E. Ryu were hacked they didn't know how to handle it and everyone was hyped so they became a buzz kill instead of trying to go with it. I understand that it was meant for after a couple of months of mvc but it was also there fault for showing it in the trailer months ago that led to the hacks.
I'm missing the good old days when everyone knows nothing abou what they are getting until you unbox the game, play and no matter how bad it is you still enjoy it. Gaming was that simple and delightful. When I'm looking forward to a game I try my best to not read or watch any article or video on the internet about this game, no matter how tempting they are. And I refuse to read any guide for the game on my first run, I mean, the game is hardly gonna be fun when you have nothing to expect from.
@3
He was one before this article was even posted.
@EmeraldFont & Arkhitect & everyone who agrees with their comics
the information that was LEAKED is not what I wanted, you can go back and see me never ask for a single piece of info not officially released by Capcom so yes I wag my finger at Lupinko and will forevermore do so.
@DumbDLC
it hurts PR(which he is) because he has nothing to hype up unlike MK9 who has no definitive leak list which lets Ed Boon and his team hype the s*** out of it
@39 They hide the stuff because they need to hype the game. IF they just said back in April "Hey we are making MvC3 it's gonna have (xyz) characters (xyz) feaures and comes out on (xyz) date." Now they have a whole 12 months with nothing to present at all, everything is exposed, competition is aware and the hype dies down fast and sales DO EFFECT IT negetivly.
I do hope Capcom keeps tabs on people with the information they release, it's apparent these are people who work for Capcom who probably test the game but live like you and me. Very difficult to track those kinds of leaks.
@42 see the thing is he isnt PR he is a special adviser, knowing characters before the game is released doesnt kill the hype, and why did non capcom employees like marn get to know before hand and not us? Kill is full of BS the game was hype because people were waiting 10+ years for it. I think they really dont like the leaks because people will start complaining about things like the cast
Definitely get where he would be coming from.
