Here are a few other reviews from various websites.

Gangsta street fighter 4
Nobody gives a flying sh@t about time trials and score attack mode. Get this bullsh@t out of here.
Yeah, this is a fighting game.. it's about fighting people. There's no reason to put useless modes in the game that no one is going to use 2 hours after the game has been released.
I agree with #6 those modes are just a waste. I like how they provide stats and a quick select of your favorite team.
Well the game is only going to get better through time.
So far, I've seen generally positive reviews! It doesn't matter if it gets a perfect score
"This game isn't perfect, but it got the most important elements right."
After hearing that, I couldn't care less about a review score, it's awesome.
IGN gave TvC a 9.0.
And while I haven't played MvC3 yet, I'm inclined to agree. Marvel looks like a very fun game, but TvC simply has a more complex fighting system that is just as easy to get into.
These reviews are mostly from a casual perspective, so this is actually better than expected. I'll wait to get my hands on the game myself. I usually only use critic reviews to gauge if a game is good or bad, the numbers, not so much. Still, Capcom did ignore a lot of the things some fans have demanded.
(Game Informer gave it a 9.25, I know it's been on the front page prior but thought it'd be worth adding. After reading their review, their only real complaint was the lack of online modes; they wondered why they just didn't copy and paste the SFIVs modes.(Which is a good observation. I know they're probably working on it but...)
IMO Game Informer is pretty good about reviews. Been subscribed for forever. They'll have a podcast up(probably on Friday) talking more in depth about the review and misc. things, I'll repost when I'm able to.)
8.5/10 is not so bad.
I am willing to be my left nut. That there going to pull off a SSF4 on us by making a new MvC3 or adding DLC's with added characters,modes,maps and etc.
They docked the score because it lacks modes and unlockables? This is why you should never take reviewers of niche titles seriously.
Anybody buying the f'n game is going jump online and play people or their friends. They say the characters lack 'detail' yet fail to mention all the little things like pregame and assist chit-chat.
WTF? 8.5/10 Really? Well it's not so bad. The review does seem to have a point.
@#27 Hell's yeah since this game is going to be a huge success. CAPCOM would want to cash in. I would gladly spend money on DLC's or a new version. Btw who would want your left nut xD????
Too be fair, Brawl had a slew of single player and multiplayer options which werent bad. While most has nothing to do with competitive play, it could be understandable why it would have gotten a higher score. Of course for the hardcore and competition styled players MvC3 is where it is at. Also the only thing wrong with TvC really was the platform.
So in all i find the score of 8.5/10 fair, seeing how the game is mainly for competition and lacks the spectator mode is a damned low blow for the way the game is designed.
I can't believe how immature you people are getting over what is a completely positive score.
Just because it's a game you like doesn't mean it has to get a perfect score. You are insane if you don't think the lack of a spectator mode isn't a pretty big deal. You may not think these extra modes are important but that's because you are a die hard fan. You'll buy anything that capcom spits out regardless of how good it is or not.
8.5 is a solid score and complaining about it is laughable.
@#28
Well when your spending $60+ on a game, people would expect to have content to play around with. Granted alot of us here are just gonna practice a little bit and jump online, but for all the casuals and people new to the series picking it up would find the pricetag a bit steep for not having things to mess around with if they dont feel like being online just to enjoy the game in its entirety(which you have to understand).
spectator mode means endless mode in SSF4 right?
if there is no spectator mode or replay channel. i think 8.5 is fair. only 1-2% of people who are going to buy the game are tournaments players. most people just want to play for fun.
EMP got sum mvc3 gameplay vids if any1 wants to check them out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypnNpR...
You people are so way to judgmental and critical (what else is new lol). The reviewer even said that the hardcore probably won't care at all about the lack of game modes, but the guy has a job to do, which means objectively scoring a game based on its merits to the general crowd. He's not scoring based on "HOW MUCH ASS IT KICKZZZZ" ...
Solid review IMO.
This game is obviously meant for longevity as opposed to beginner friendliness, so why does this score make you all gnash your teeth like this?
"Of course, this probably won't matter very much to the hardcore fighting community. They'll be too busy wearing out fighting sticks to care."
That's what the reviewer says at the end of the video about the disadvantages he found about the game. It's his message to us, the people that care for the core experience. So, yeah.
Stop complaining. Please.
It all comes down to content, content, content. Game reviewers score fighters just like any other game like CoD or GoW; it comes down to getting your money's worth. Fighting is all good but what else do you get? Online? Ok, waht else. Training? well thats nice. But at the end of it all the content is lacking. Capcom did a great job with the fighter but they sorta forgot to make the "game" part. 8.5 to 9.0 is generous and it's only because the reviewers understood what this game was aimed for.
They can't lie to the rest of the world by saying this is the best thing of all time because it's not really. It's a fighter like many of the fighters out there, just with a nich audience. No matter what pedistal you put MvC3 on it's just a game to them and if the game does'nt deliver in content worthy of 60 bucks it's gonna lose some points.
The game is still gonna sell like hot cakes though because of the Marvel license and the fact that it's a MvC game.
Oh i also wanted to point out how atrocious the Coomputer and Video Gaming review is. The guy says that Capcom used the Street Fighter IV engine.
I was like WTF?
He also sounds like some scrub crying about no Stider or mega man (Which I agree) but he sounds like he came from one of these gaming sites trolling or something.
Disappointing. But hell I never heard of Computer and Video Games website eitehr so it might as well be a youtube review.
People seem to be ignoring the fact that G4 and Joystiq gave it perfect scores so if your looking for a websites filled with just as much boloney as IGN to tell you what you want to hear, they exist too. Rather it's an 8 or 10, it's a good game.
All video game websites suck whent it comes to telling the real truth about a fighre. If you really wanna know how good a fighter is. Eventscrubs, SRGay, and Iplayweiner is where you should be looking.(I crack myself up)
@48 yeah I just read it and lol read the comments they rip him a new one
The scores are inconsequential. Some of those reviews were simply terrible to read, notably CVG, Team Xbox and GamesRadar. The purpose of a review is to be critical: what is good and what is bad. It becomes glaringly obvious when a reviewer has little to say if a full page has been dedicated to detailing game mechanics and visual elements. Media outlets have been publishing previews and videos over the course of the title's development period, so note to writer: we know what is going on. Any critical analysis of the game was either completely unfounded or factually inaccurate.
The only two worth reading were Destructoid and Eurogamer.
@48
Yeah, me makes it sound like it was a was a main point that Capcom themselves have been trying to push when, as far as I know, they've NEVER said that once. Ever.
I really only trust Dtoid (especially Holmes as far as Capcom and fighters go) and Joystiq to an extent, and I'm happy with both reviews.
Where do people get that these guys are whining about the score most I've read say seems fair and are being honest that aside from spectator mode most other mode will be rarely used aside from that maybe 3 comments at least saying score should have been higher.
I think most people here understand why this game got the score it did from IGN, but at the same time some people need to also look at this game for what it is and not what a reviewer believes it should be, especially from one who is not well-versed in the fighting genre. Time Attack and Challenge modes are all bonuses, not necessities. SSF4 included the bonus stages from older games, but a mode such as this should not have much bearing on the final score of the game it's in.
This reminds me of the criticism single-player games receive for a lack of modes or multiplayer options. If a game is good, it is good. Games like BioShock and Dead Space, for example, never needed multiplayer modes, but their sequels included them because of the way some people react to single-player games with a lack of additional modes. There is an unneeded expectation towards games these days, and it is a bit unfortunate.
If you're going to buy MvC3, it's because you want to enjoy it's multiplayer offerings (and a good training mode). Nobody is really going to regret their purchase of the game, but if they do it's because they never truly wanted it in the first place.
well ive had the game since friday and i might get flamed for this but i dont like it... its way too user friendly and alot of things that should be punished after its blocked just leaves you at neutral now or leaves you at plus to continue attacking ex....... my friend did a 3man hyper with cpt america, thor, iron man.... before iron man finished doing his proton cannon cpt america was already attacking me with normals. Theres a long list of things I see wrong with the game but ill let yall play it and see for yourselfs
First off I'm getting the game regardless. Spectator mode and Replay channel should've been included because its a learning tool and it gives you the arcade experience(watching and waiting for your turn). The write-up version states they should've had real alternate costumes, this is 50/50 because Spidey essentially got 3 alternate costumes. I hope they add the needed modes as FREE DLC. Alternate costumes I don't mine paying for. More DLC characters definite buy because in the end they have to make money to make games and we dhould support them if we don't want to wait another 11 years.
The 1up.com review is the most trustworthy one for us fighting fanatics. Its made by iplaywinner's Haunts so you know that he knows what's important and what matters.
@56 You shouldn't get flamed it's your opinion and experience of this game so far thanks for the input on the game.
For once I don't disagree with IGN. I'm still salty about no spectator and theater mode. Those SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THEY ADDED. I don't care about character models when it stacks up against any of these. I feel spoiled from SSF4, but in all honesty that is what this game needs. The file sharing system in SSF4 is just superb and dumping the idea now seems somwhat strange.
Marvel is indeed a fun game and though it doesn't have spectator mode at the moment it does have some features SSFIV is seriously lacking. For instance, in two player online casuals the player can choose one of three options after the match - rematch, select a different character, or quit game without even leaving going back to the lobby screen. Its training mode is a little revamped over SSFIV and it has a request fight feature.
regardless of the score im still gettin it.and like someone said who needs all that extra stuff its a damn fighting game
Good enough. Fighting games don't need reviews aproval to fulfill the desires of fighting games players. And to fulfill what they are meant to give us players.
Either they are good and fun to play, or they don't. All around that is too relative.
But the "+ balanced roster" made me lol. Let's wait a few months.
@NINJA oh god please no more God-tiers, not again!
@5
Of course it did , its f***ing Smash Bros. :b
@8
MvC3 is a solid 8.
Its clear as day the game is unfinished.
@ 38 endless mode is where you and your friends fight in a lobby over and over again while spectator mode is where you just watch people fight but don't fight yourself. to answer you question simply no endless and spectator mode mode or 2 different modes.
@25
Is there a problem with TvC being rated higher? Have you sat down and spent time playing both?
@31
I don't think the platform was a "problem"- I think its a perfectly fine game (the lower resolution visuals are counterbalanced by the faster load times, lower price, and multitude of control options the wii offers). I'd say the only problem with TvC is that MvC3 was announced so soon after that the game didn't get much of a chance to build a solid, large community. While Evo was great, it's the last EVO TvC will be at (besides maybe side tournies).
If Capcom had held off MvC3 announcement until EVO or after EVO then TvC would be a lot more popular.
I can't wait to get the game tomorrow and form my own opinion! : )
Gamespot.com also has a review up, they've given it an 8.5 on 10:
