A number of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 related posts were added to the Unity Boards from Capcom staff members Seth Killian and Christian Svensson. Here's a rundown of what they had to say.
Will you increase Phoenix's health in MvC3?
Seth Killian: No Phoenix health buffs just yet, sorry :) Her health has continued to go down over the course of development based precisely on our extreme respect for her overall potential.
I keep saying it, but nobody likes the answer because it's a tough one: If you want to win with Phoenix, don't get hit. It's tough, but not impossible. She's not for beginners, and I would never start a match with her, but she's one of the most explosive characters in the game.
On point she has a terrifying rush and extreme mobility (8-way airdash, speed, flying, instant teleport to multiple positions), and an effective way to set it up from far away (tracking fireballs). Her Phoenix traps and faster fireballs are also a solid keepaway, and when she "goes dark" you can totally flood the screen with projectiles. She's very, very good.
Her low health is her weakness, but it's also not quite as bad as it seems because:
1) She has a healing-field hyper. It works, and fast. If you combine that with a solid rush pattern, she can recover a big chunk of her life rather quickly if she's willing to approach.
2) With Dark Phoenix mode, she essentially has *two* lifebars. It's not quite that simple of course, but she does get a full bar back, and even a mini-combo breaker when she turns (she pops out of whatever was happening to her when she turns, though some things (like some projectile hypers) will continue hitting her after she finishes the transformation).
Phoenix is a high-wire act. She can stay alive and just dominate you, but in order to do it she has to be routinely putting herself into dangerous situations (re: getting near you). She's super fun to mash with, but winning with her at high levels is a bit like Strider in MvC2 — she's a glass-jawed meter hog, but heaven help you when she starts her rush.
Could you please consider patching in a "VS CPU" option in MVC3's versus mode?
Seth Killian: Just to cut to the chase here, you can indeed play against the CPU to your heart's content. Against any teams, at any difficult, and even on any stage you choose.
It's not pulled out as a separate "mode," but it's easily done in training mode. You pick the dummy team, and then all you need to do is set the training dummy to "CPU" and turn life recovery to "OFF." You can select the difficulty, and just go at it. It's great for practicing against certain teams, and the CPU at the hardest difficulty is, umm, actually hard.
When the CPU (or you) has been killed off, the match just immediately restarts from the beginning. You can change characters whenever you want, or change assists from the menus without even going back to the character select screen.
The training mode in this game is extremely, extremely good. From the easy record and replay functionality to practice against certain setups, to the huge variety of customizable dummy options, I think it's the best we've ever done. Hope this answers some questions.
If MvC3 is a huge success can we expect other crossovers in the near future? (within a couple years). — Soljah
Svensson: As with anything in this business, titles that perform well tend to get follow-ups. Those that don't... don't. :)
The street date for MvC3 was broken and one guy got the game way early (about a week ago).
Svensson: We'll be investigating the broken street date. I know approximately where this person lives (South Bay Area).
The street date of 2/15 stands and I'm hopeful that it won't be widely broken.
Will you guys consider a sequel to X-Men vs. Street Fighter or Marvel Super Heroes? — Darkraids
Svensson: MvC3 is really the sequel of those early titles and we're focused on ensemble projects, not individual brand projects mostly for Versus titles for the foreseeable future.
The X-men franchise specifically would have some other hurdles in that Activision currently holds that license from Marvel.
Wait, they don't have a basic VS CPU mode? You have to go through a roundabout method in training mode just to set up a match against the computer? What the hell? Please tell me I'm just misreading this and that the guy was actually trying to ask if you could set the training dummy to CPU mode. If not, that's pretty bad, missing the most basic of offline single-player modes.
Now that I think about it, TvC was missing that too.
But anywho, I will enjoy using Phoenix on my planned secondary team of Zero/Phoenix/Morrigan.
No vs CPU mode?! Damn I don't wanna go through training mode for that.....
And as far as people complaining about Phoenix; the game hasn't come out yet, criticize it after you've played a bit.
@ 5
That's a glassjaw team... well Morrigan is 950,000 but still. Not a single person above average might be a problem.
This week on COPS, another MvsC3 stream has been found online...
Phoenix with low stamina... even more lower than Seth from SSF4. Not cool.
@crispylinks77
Exactly. Full of glass cannons keeping a constant offense.
It's a contrast to my primary team, which will be focused on keepaway.
screw activision and their marvel games because they almost all suck. capcom made the fun ones
Everyone else's stamina is a factor of 50,000, so why does Phoenix have 420k instead of 450k? YOU LIKE GETTING HIGH, CAPCOM?!
I think if players around the world complain a lot they might patch her health. He said that right now its not a option.

Trish has a few word for Phoenix involving the top tier spot...
*Chuckle*
Bye Bye!
@21 Why don't you guys give her a chance when the game comes out before flooding our forums with whining post of "OMG BUFF HER/OMG NERF HER" rants. Only a few scrubs ever touched her and i'd like to see what she's capable of before she is actually tweaked on.
Not trying to be rude here but I don't see any vids of anyone taking her seriously enough to consider her either really weak or really a threat. So far we just got demos of her getting her tail kick or kicking tail and both are not impressive.
#7 These guys made Pheonix and tested her out fully with the help of Seth Killian. Im pretty sure they know wha tthey are talking about.
@19 ps1 spiderman games(based off the 90s show)
Spiderman 2(the movie game)
Xmen legends and marvel ulitmate alliance series
ultimate spiderman(based of the ultimate universe)
Xmen origins:Wolverine the game
Spiderman shattered dimensions which was a varied game with a good voice cast(they had the 90s spidey voice as noir and the 60s voice of spidey as 2099 well as spectuclar spidermans as ultimate) and was a good all around game calling back to the ps1 originals
Xmen destiny might shape up to be the best xmen title since the 90s arcade game.
And all the activision games do something you won't see the capcoms do, allow the marvel charaters to be strong as they are in the comics no exceptions, no need for balance issues just me playing the charater I like in a setting where they don't suck because they're balanced to be in a fighting game and have an expanding library of moves
So keep trolling you need to get better at it
You clearly didn't play half the games I listed then malda because they all were damn good and gave you the actual feeling of playing the real charater like wolverine with his healing factor which all capcom games seem to drop or hulks ever growing strenght as he gets angrier even spiderman swinging through new york fighting doc ock or scorpion hell even shocker.
Capcom makes good fighting games but not games that make the marvel fan in me want to buy them over rise of the imprefects(the horrrible 3d arena fighter, that got the charater). They don't do 95% of the charaters justice the only cap and deadpool seem spot on. As a marvel fan I have to say activision wins the war of getting charaters and diversty of charaters right thus I want to play them.
Kuya you read the full thing? It explains in trainning mode you can fight a cpu like a real match but can change your assist and make the cpu use some amazing unblockable setup and find a way to block it or find a way to get out of a prefectly excuted ckc
I actually agree with Seth on this one I've seen Phoenix potential she is great. Also many people don't know this but When she goes Dark she can still regain health when switched out. All these people bitching must be new to fighting games cuz if you don't see her potential you must be blind.
@6 Doesn't your second comment go against your first, lol?
I'm looking forward to this for the vs mode. you can not only pick a random computer team, but you can PICK your computer team. Want to see what the computer can do with your team at the hardest setting? As I said earlier, "Training mode is going to ruin so many lives."
Phoenix is gonna be in My team. I don't care if she has low HP I am saving her for last. So she can bring the pain.
I lol'd at this:
The street date for MvC3 was broken and one guy got the game way early (about a week ago).
Svensson: We'll be investigating the broken street date. I know approximately where this person lives (South Bay Area).
Hahaha! justice sweet justice.
@shogun
im really gonna enjoy shadow mode and i will buy it but i cant help to feel that this was just a cheap shot to sell it more, i mean, seriously, king of fighters 12, the most skinny fighter (modes wise) this gen had vs cpu, there is just no reason not to have that, the ai is already programed, its really easy to include it.
You all just wish Phoenix was piss easy to play as so your all annoyed. When you get the game no one is forcing you to be Phoenix, just get good with Phoenix, don't get hurt, learn some combos where you can throw Phoenix in and be safe and combo everyone else to hell. She can heal her self ya know, she isn't completely screwed.
Though, I will say, I hope maybe they can patch a way in so she won't get chipped to death by spammers. Just a suggestion.

this got me to hype
The Wolverine game was good and Spider-Man 2 AND 3(The PS3/360 versions only...the PS2/Wii versions were pretty horrible) were excellent...Ultimate Spider-Man was stupid and had too much racing in it. Havent played Spider-Man S.D. but the games after SM3 were pretty bad.....So Activision had 100% bad games.
phoenix announced, cries of being OP
phoenix reviewed, cries of being trash and zomgbuffhealthpl0x
that is my nightly entertainment!
either way she gonna be like mvc2 magneto able to relentlessly rush down without getting hit while opening you up. There is alot of moments where he doesnt get hit why wouldnt phoenix be able to do the same with homing projectiles and teleports.
Also games like these even people with average health would probably be getting 100% comboed at higher levels later down the line, just conviently the time taken would be significantly lesser to kill phoenix. EITHER way the same outcome. Atleast she basically megacrashes when she goes to dark phoenix.
Jdigital... you just said...then....
You just saida few activison games were good...then 100% bad. You didn't even touch a few of them(a sign you most likely didn't play them) and you didn't try SD (stan lee is the narrator)so don't hate. And if you just were trying to hate all it did was make you look kinda stupid especially when you said "hey these are good but its 100% crap"
Speaking of Phoenix, someone just remixed the hell out of her MvC3 theme on YouTube:
Honestly, I have a feeling Phoenix will be filling in nicely as a role for assists. That's all I thought of using her as, stay with the first two teammates and build meter while using her homing fireball as an assist for pressure. Once meter builds up, let phoenix put up a fight, but still get her ass whuuped. After she transforms, flood the screen with projectiles and win at life forever lol.
TBH i lost a lot of my interest on this game before its even out. Maybe its because i have seen every single aspect of it from videos and interviews so the surprise elements is gone....maybe its cause it seems too similar to TVC, a game which i liked but only played for about a week before getting bored...maybe its because i am not super impressed with the cast...dunno. What i AM very happy about is the thought that after the game is out we can expect to hear more about Street Fighter X Tekken, SSF IV A.E. DLC and even 3rd Strike O.E. :-)
How I think Phoenix will be played:
Build meter with the rest of the team till you have 5 bars. Bring in Phoenix, do as much damage as you can until the enemy hits you and you die instantly, transform to Dark Phoenix, tag back out if possible to build meter and restore life so you can have a healing field active when you get her back in. I can't see any other way.
@42
Yeh, I get the feeling that some people want Phoenix to be easy mode and they are butt hurt because they can't use a powerful character with taking a huge risk haha. For me the health doesn't matter. I don't get hit by random stuff on versus games.
Jean Grey is my favourite X-Men character next to Rogue (who isn't in this game) so it's a no brainer for me to use her as a main.
You guys talk as if you never played a team with Cable ever. The strategy is use your battery characters and then get Phoenix in with meter. Any assist that can make the opponent block for a while so you can teleport in will be good. You could do something like Dormmamu's black hole. Trish trap assist will also probably be good since you can lock the character down once Phoenix gets in.
"
- Hummm, Phoenix, she's rushdown machine plus Dark Phoenix which takes your whole Hyper BUT gives you a second chance, let's give her 420,000 health for game balance.
- What about Sentinel?
- He's also a rushdown machine... I don't know, let's give 1,300,000 health, seems to be fair enough.
"
Awesome stuff :D, if Strider Hiryu doesn't come as a DLC, I don't mind playing Phoenix, she seems pretty sick anyway.
Does anyone know if u can change your button config after selecting your charater in online mode?
Phoenix's health is fine the way it is. As for the massive chip damage she'll endure, it just depends on the special moves & hypers. The stronger the move, the more it'll hurt. Comparisons to Seth are valid, as they both are easy to beat, but evil when they rush you down. Fair trade if you ask me.
@64 Well I wish all the luck to you on maining Jean.
They said Juri had a glass jaw, so I'm not exactly gonna take their word on it.
@57 Asis Galvin is okay, I prefer NegroSaki.
Or WhizzyWhips.
Thanks for coming, Pheonix.
