Capcom was able to sell 1.6 million copies of Super Street Fighter 4, according to a report by EuroGamer this morning. @ 2 Sakura
Well you gotta realize that SF4 was a big hit, and people didn't want to buy SSF4. Once word of mouth got out people started buying Super. I know a few friends that don't even play fighting games that own a copy of Super. It's a great game, and anyone can play it. My girl only hits 2 buttons with C.Viper but if I already didn't own the game she would go out and buy it. It's that simple. Super Street Fighter 4 is a successful game, even if the numbers don't show you that. It will continue to sell even after Marvel vs Capcom 3 release, because of how easy it is to play.
@Sakura
That's probably because you're only used to hearing about bigshot games like Halo, CoD, GTA, ect. Comparing anything to them is pointless. Street Fighter isn't on that level. Besides SSF4 is basically just a tweak of another game that was less than a year old and that most of the fans already had.
@Shareware
But good sales != good game. Likewise, good game != good sales.
Just look at all the mediocre-to-bad games that have sold a lot, and then look at several games that were critically acclaimed yet didn't make the sales numbers.
@darunor, dude if you don't like ssf4 game why da fuk are u on this forum? don't kid urself either u like it or get back to ur loser life.
no gf,lol
@ #2
Lol, no offense, but it doesn't really matter what YOU were expecting.
Capcom themselves were expecting only 1.1 million. They got 1.6 million.
That is a literal definition of the term "success".
Haters be darned...SF4 has been a very successful series in every single way.
@5 Why would you ever compare sells to any COD game? COD is pretty much expected to make ground breaking sells with every release. They aren't the standard for what other games should be selling since there's very few games that can compete with their numbers. Resident evil would be the only series Capcom has that could remotely challenge those kinds of numbers. 1.6 million copies is impressive considering SSF4 is just an updated version of a previously released game that sold well on it's own.
@5
you're comparing it to one of the biggest game. name a few games that can even compare to CoD. there isn't much, maybe wii sports and a few FF games. news to people that don't know, 1 million is a decent figure in gaming industry. sure it's not blockbuster hit, but many games don't reach that. plus super was just an update.
Everybody know that COD is for kids and teenage market!Does Not really need talent to kill someone?!And it sell well because american have this gun culture! And modern warfare fps is pretty rare so people wait this game every years like Christ!Sucess yes with sells , Balance of the game is garbage!
Kidz will start to play Mortal Kombat because its violent not because its well done! Stop compare games that are praise by teenage and kids with no sense of critic!
@ #14
[Capcom will reach 2 millions once it goes to PC. *wink*]
Actually it's high likely it's the opposite, since lots of PC gamers bought a 360 just to play the game.
If the game has exceeded the expected numbers, they might probably not consider a PC version at all.
to be honest thats not that good compared to fps and rts games like starcraft and black ops mvc3 will sh1t on ssf4 numbers
#18
Saying it's bad compared to FPS and RTS games is like saying that it's bad compared to the bottles of coke sold.
They are all games, but a totally different target audience.
Even if Super Street Fighter 4 was the best fighter ever made, it still wouldn't outsell black ops or starcraft.
@ All these people comparing SSF4 to big budget games, remember that the production costs + advertising campaign for a game like COD or Halo is probably like 15 or 20 times bigger than for a game like SSF4. It's like comparing apples and oranges, really.
I'm glad that SSF4 outsold Capcom expectations, that only means more high quality fighting games in the future. :D
# 19 and 20 you guys realize that fps and RTS games are still there competition. Gameplan you are making a lot of assumptions it still cost alot of money to produce any video game from scratch.
@22
Oh I'm very into the game - - Im just not getting a console when I already own superior hardware. Just like many other PC players, like 14 said.
I have 100 people on my vanilla PC friend list, and maybe 3 or 4 got an xbox.
Well, great Capcom now add up the all the collectors editions, fightsticks, pads, costumes, regular sf4 buys, that's a hefty sum. So i wonder if you guys will ever say we need more money, or that you guys are low on it. You guys are cleary sucking us dry. Maybe now its time to show us some love back!! I know you guys wont because you dont care you just want to get over on all the little ppl who you guys consider to be insignificant. Entice us, and we are all lacking the focus to notice the schemes at times. So, with all that money, maybe its time to start giving us free stuff? You guys charge us for every little thing 4.00 for costumes, then you do it so we have to get costumes we dont want, when tekken 6 gives you a mass variety of clothing options FREE! Yea, i find nothing ineffable. I'll down right say it even when everyone else wont. N when its time to say it again, guess what, i'll fing say it again.
mortal kombat always been for older ppl and mybe some teens but thanks to stupid mk vs dc and ERSB bullsh** am gald mk9 went back to M-rated and way fkin better i can't wait to get my hands on it and mvc3 its been a long time since i play a good mk from back in the day
@25
Lol, you act like Capcom owes you something? The point of buisness is that they make something YOU want, YOU buy it. If YOU don't want it..... DON'T BUY IT! I don't know why that buisness concept is so hard to understand. I don't know what country your from but where im from if you don't want to buy something you simply don't.
It's not like Capcom goes around the world with a gun to people heads saying "Gimme Yo money, Buy SSFIV!" You have a choice, everyone has ALWAYS had the choice.
As far as costumes, YOU the customer asked for that. For the last 2 years all iv'e seen is customers on these forums ask the same freakin question to Capcom; "You gonna have costume packs?" "You gonna have costume packs?" "You gonna have costume packs?" I mean apparently people want "Costumes!" So capcom made it.
The difference between Tekken and Street Fighter was that it was decided from the beguinning to make costumes for all the characters. But look how long it took for Tekken 6 to come out and net code suffered for it. All those bells and whistles most people don't care about. Capcom never invest in things on a game that is not worth development time, so rather than put all the costumes on the game and selling it for 60 bucks you get a 39.99 dollar game and costumes sold seperatly. I think thats a fair deal.
They shipped 2 million meaning they've only sold 4/5ths of the original stock
After doing some research(vgchartz) I found out that street fighter 4 had only sold 3.8 million excluding the pc. Now when you consider this was back when super had sold 1.1 this could be a sign off just people dropping off like ken I and people who didn't like normal sf4 so they dropped off getting ssf4
LOL @ people finding a way to belittle the success because its not the BEST SELLING game on the market. It did better than they had forecast so that is good news. If it sold horribly they probably wouldn't make any more games and then you would have to go through the trouble of finding something new to whine about.
@omegax9000
> you guys realize that fps and RTS games are still there competition.
No they aren't. SSF4's competition are Blazblue, Tekken, KOF, etc. Again, comparing mainstream big budget titles sales against a niche genre like fighting games is like comparing apples and oranges. And no, I'm not making assumptions, I know games cost a lot of money to produce but there are BIG differences in budget between games. As 30 seconds on Google will tell you, big budget mainstream FPS generally cost several tens of millions to develop. Heck, according to Wikipedia, MS spend 40 millions on Halo 3 advertising campaign ALONE. That's almost as much as Capcom's original forecast numbers of 1.1 million copies of SSF4 at $40 each. Now compare that to SSF4's ad campaign (which was pretty much nonexistent) see the difference?
People need to understand that not all games must outsold COD or Starcraft in order to be successful. That's like saying that any movie that doesn't earn as much money as Avatar is a failure.
I'm actually quite interested to know how much extra they made thru DLC. Personally, I think the costume charges are quite high but being a die hard fan, I'll always purchase them. It would be nice if AE would be free for download in June. Oh well, I can keep dreaming.
haha, my mate bought his 2nd copy of the game this morning, maybe he got the 1.6th mil one! haha
Actually SF4 came out in June/July of 2008. And SSF4 came out last year.....so it was out for a year and a half before Super was released(just in arcades. Thats cool that they exceeded expectations! I personally only like Yun/Yang from SF3 3rd Suck and bought it used specifically so Capcom wouldn't get my money for adding characters from the lamest street fighter to date. They can redeem themselves if they bring out CVS3...if they can bring the biggest button masher ever back (MVC series), then they can bring back the series that is both fun and is not a masher!
You wanna know why SSF4 sold less than SF4? Its simple you guys all chased them away with your constant trolling and hating. I love the street fighter series but dealing with all of the Street fighter elitist who have to hate on every other fighting game released is annoying. When you compare the fighting game genre to other more popular games like MMO's, FPS, and RTS games we should support games like blazblue, mortal kombat, and the namco fighters. I you guys really want fighter to survive you have to give other games a chance and get off your high horse you pricks.
I'm hyped for MK too....been playing MK since I was a child.
Also, FPS and Fighters target different audiences. Yes, both do require skill (different types), but in a fighter...it's just you and someone else. Therefore it's automatically more niche than any fps game.
How well did 3rd Strike sell? I'm sure that's the definition of "fail."
Not only that, COD had tons of people into it before Black-Ops ever came out. SF4 is really the most successful fighting game to date, so it can still absorb more people later on down the road.
@ #24
Superior hardware my arse, online experience it's about netplay, not about having less aliasing. X360's one is far superior - sadly, because PCs should always grant the best gaming experience.
And yes, you're not into the game, since you (and your 100 friends, sure, whatever) have rather play a almost 1 year old game.
@ #44
To your information both versions use LIVE so there goes your rather weak point. Also drop that "Buy a console" crap, cause I wonder if SFV came out only on PS3 would you be so eager to buy one just for it. PC is 100% better machine considering specs and I'm not going to spend 5 times as much money for one game. I'd rather go play my BlazBlue.
Let's hope we see more of these numbers. I don't want the fighting genre to leave the mainstream any time soon.
