Just because Third Strike was a great game doesn't change that Urien's design was REALLY uninspired. But hey, if you think you can defend it's merit, go for it. Dude, I am all ears.
@ Mrb20028
It was a great game. The art design still had a lot of problems, though.
wow the one were he rips gill of his pedistal ftw amazing
@ Mr_Clack
If someone likes that design, that's fine. I'm not the opinion police. But if you think it looks good, explain your reasons. I say it looks bad because it is a bland muscle man with hardly any detail. If you screened this design to random audience, by itself, with no context of where it came from, we all know it would get critically torn to pieces.
I don't hate Third Strike. I only say these things in hopes that Capcom will fix his design.
Yes minimal clothing is so dissonant with the concept of a martial artist. How could Capcom have possibly been so misinformed!!!
You know what Urien's character design needed? Belts and zippers, I think. Let's get some Nomura in here keeping Street Fighter's aesthetic sensibility up to the modern standards of inspired character designs.
Because, you know, it's not like the entire principal consistent throughout the series history guiding Street Fighter's classically iconic designs isn't elegant simplicity or anything.

"bland muscle man with hardly any detail" sounds like most of SF's character designs.
The difference is that Urien's is clearly supposed to call back to mythic ideal of a male specimen as depicted in Greek statues, but given a distinct supernatural anime twist to freshen it up a little. It's a simple design that accomplishes its goal well enough while still managing to be distinct from the rest of the cast.
so i dont know much about thirds story so judging by the one pic is urien in charge of twelve or something like that and is the third strike universe paralel to streets is it before or after 2
I love me some 3rd Strike and all, but I gotta agree with #1. Urien's character design is a huge FAIL. And Gill is just as bad.
@ analogos
I'll never say the costume isn't practical, but that's another contest entirely. If practicality is what we're going by, then Chun-Li is wearing the worst cop uniform ever.
If it was the herculian fighter they were going for, I'd say they were closer to the mark with Gill. The long flowing hair and masculine demeanor communicate much more of a demigod feel. With the white hair and white eyes, Urien looks more insane than majestic. Like a mad scientist pumped with steroids. The most memorable feature Urien has is the dark skin, and I'm just not sure what I'm suppose to associate with this.
neon6 is basically right... Sad, too, that he's right.
I love using Dudley, Makoto, Ibuki, Alex, Hugo, Elena, Q, Twelve, and attempting to use Urien, Yun, Yang, Necro, and I'm forgetting people huh? Oh, Oro!
I think that Urien matches. His eyes gives that flat out "I'm pissed. You REALLY wanna fight with me? Because I'm mad about this life I live now because of that f*'er Gill. So, get out of my way before I crush you!"
I don't agree that Urien and Gill's character designs are fail. I rather like them actually haha, though it takes a while for a man in a thong to grow on ya. I mean, his supers: Tyrant slaughter, temporal thunder, aegis reflector. They kinda reference greek/roman mythology. With Gill, Seraph Wing and... his other one is... *wikipedia* meteor strike. Oh and resurrection. Basically he's jesus. Haha, so both have a godly theme, thus: They get to rock thongs.
I don't think SF3 failed. It's just a hit or miss. For me, huge hit. It's probably still my favorite game to date, it's just too different from SF2/alpha. SF4 brought back the 2/alpha fans because its gameplay is more similar. with 3, you basically had to play a completely different game.
@14
no Gill is in charge of twelve. its basically like SF4 Bisons ending. where that one Seth is surrounded by Bison and all the other Seths. Urien looks like hes confronting Gill so obviously his body guards will be there ya know? SF3 is the last series chronologically speaking. it is after SF4.
@18 art, especially in video games has to be exaggerated and obvious otherwise it loses interest quick. IF they put him in some sout of outfit that hid his features that define him as a mystical Olympian hybrid, then people will miss the point until someone wispers in your ear "Oh did you know he was inspired by a greek olympian/god? No one would have guesseed. When you see him in his suit your like whatever, then he bust out in nothing but his undies and a sculpt body that makes metal thud sounds when you hit him.
His evil look typically identified by his white hair and eyes is on purpose. He is suppose to be the jealous angry brother mad at the world. It has to show some how. You gotta know he's a bad guy.
In fighting games a character must be recognizable right away in the most stereotypical fasion because as a fighting game many players are not concerned about the back story until after the fact. You get Makoto is a Karate master, you get Hugo is a giant wrestler, you get Dudley is a british boxer. SOme of it might not be as obvious cuz they speak japanese like Remy(most). But Characters have to tell a story immediatly before a match. Thats the goal in character design.
The stigma about street fighter though is many fans are not willing to let go of old characters and try something new, so games like Third Strike don't get a solid following because everyone wanted freakin DeeJay or something, im sure SFIV would have followed suit. 3rd Strike was a breath of fresh air the series needed, I'll defend that to the end of my gaming days.
Otter_of_Death
I agree with the design part.
To add to the Muscular Underwear Asskicker Club:
Zangief
Fei Long (Alt 1)
Goro (MK)
Gill
Those are ones just off the top of my head. I could find more if I wanted to do so. At least the game designers threw away the idea of giving him a muscle tee that shows his nipples.
(To make it clear, that last sentence was a JOKE)
Sick as hell, I'm going to main Urien in 3s Online :D
In case you didn't know, Urien is in charge of 12.
Since in Twelve's ending, the scientist mentions that it was Urien's design that made them so effective.
From what I can tell is that Gill is does nothing, Urien does everything, but because Gill is more powerful, Urien can't be in charge.
Urien is pretty much my favorite character in Street Fighter 3.
Remy is my least favorite, and I hope he is removed from canon lol.
@31
ahh ok that changes everything then. yea one of them was in charge of 12 but i couldnt remember who. havent played 3rd strike in a while. anyways the art work is awesome. all 3 of them. very nice, especially #1. yummy
@26 hey cool i thought it was somethin like that so its just like seth and bison history repeats itself hahaha
SF3 bombed because you retards didn't want to play it due to it not having the same goddamn characters like the last 90 Street Fighters, and that it changed the system to require more skill. Innovation and change is so hated upon fans of a series that most games today draw from the same old bland formulas forever due to developers' fear of people not buying the game because it isn't rehash. That's why we got Super Turbo with HD graphics and dumbed down gameplay for casuals, aka SF4.
A mostly naked muscular guy with premature gray hair. And people wonder why SFIII bombed in America.
