NeoEmpire caught up with Seth Killian to discuss many Marvel vs. Capcom 3 topics, ranging from the strategy guide, DLC fighters and the net code. This is a very informative piece, definitely something you should read. Here's a grab.
Fear4TheHero47: Will DLC characters have story modes, endings, and challenges/missions as well?
Seth Killian: Yes, yes, and yes :)
Taj: I was wondering if you could comment on how the game’s net code is? Is
it an improvement over Super Street Fighter IV?
Seth Killian: The MVC3 netcode was done by the same engineers that did Super SFIV. Of course I haven’t been able to play it “in the wild” yet while everyone else is online too, but the tests have all been solid, and there are some nice added touches like better algorithms to determine other players’ true connection quality and avoid slow connections, and of course “rage-quitter hell.”
NeoEmpire's site has been going up and down this morning, so if you have trouble getting in at first, try the link again after a few minutes.

Considering that they went through the trouble of implementing missions & challenges for them, I think throwing in a theme into the whole package would be a piece of cake, so I think it's a safe assumption to believe that they did. It's just one more sound file to add to the character, after all.
Frank West better have his theme. And he better be in the game too.
Oh well so much for an improvement on the netcode why the ssf4 guys the did a crap job and still barely fixed anything
I hope Frank makes it as DLC. I hope all the other characters will call the name of the DLC character when he/she is called in. I really like that touch in the game.
@Grimmjow
Are you kidding? I barely ever get noticeable lag in SSF4. You must live in an isolated country or have a crappy connection. SSF4 is the smoothest experience I've had with an online fighting game except maybe for the original Blazblue.

Frank was removed due to the need of more than usual time needed to work on him, which would force the game to be delayed. I'm hoping now that the game is finished and Capcom doesn't have a formal deadline, Frank will be put in as DLC. I know that many people want him in, and Frank was even in early builds of the game, so they have some work done already.
@8 no I'm not and it's been an issue for the longest even tourney players have said it
rage quitter more like common sense quitter if the lag is unbearable I will quit!
#11
"Even tourney players have said it," or "Only tourney players have said it"?
The only time I have issues is when I play my friend out of Singapore (I'm in the U.S.). Otherwise it's pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. BBCT was great with online matches, but it was hindered by the fact that sometimes people couldn't even join lobbies and den when they could some people couldn't hear them talk.
Even... So far I've had some issues with people in other states then there are those matches that showed green and it lagged like crap they should fix that which is why when he said it was the speed of light... in japan
Will all the DLC characters have extra VA for calling in their teammates names? And will the rest of the cast have the same vice versa for the DLC characters?
@Grimmjow
Call your provider. You have a bad connection.
If you have trouble with SSF4, you can't play any fighting game online. It only gets worse when you move to other games.
@17
He said the same TEAM worked on the netcode, not that it was the same netcode ITSELF.
There's a good chance it's improved.
Anyway, SSF4's netcode is pretty good. I've rarely had problems, and most just complain like "WTF I HAVE A ONE BAR CONNECTION AND IT WONT STOP LAGGING WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!! >( DAMM YUO CRAPCOM!!!1!"
NOT digging the unlock characters. It's fine for single player, but it's annoying as f*ck when you want to play offline versus on a fresh console that doesn't have your main ready. They could've done different unlocks or at least leave offline versus fully unlocked and made the single player aspects require unlocks. It's like SF4 when you wanted to play Gouken at a friends house, you were just f*cked.
It won't always be an issue, but I can totally see in the future at a party or a friends house this being a major downer like it has been with SC4 and SF4.
It's weird they do this after they didn't in SSF4, as though they acknowledged versus roster unlocks are a TERRIBLE idea.
Ok since I doubt megaman is gonna be DLC ima root for so good characters like sigma annnnnd that's all who I really care about I guess aha anyways I have a question since this new marvel is coming out and I want to have a flawless online experience should I leave my xbox connected to it's wifi connection or should I get it hooked up to the actuall router??? Or will it even matter
#24 You guys act like it's the worst thing ever. Sure it ain't all gravy but it's better than most fighting games out now with the exception of BlazBlu but keep in mind thats a 2D game, very easy to code 2D netcode. 3D netcode has always been the trickiest.
The same guys who did the code DOES NOT mean it's the same netcode, that would be dumb. It's a different game with different algorithims, everything must be made from scratch and im sure the guys are smart enough to improve on ideas.
@22 stop crying they have always done it with versus games ALWAYS MVC2 for arcade is not to be counted....
and its fine to have 4 characters locked atleast its not the whole roster and plus it will more than likely stop bad kids from playing sentinel on line
Stider and Spiral are the unlockable characters.
Deal with it.
@26 so I should stop crying because I have a legit point that's been proven to be an issue on several occasions with other games and was finally omitted with SSF4 and worked perfectly? Thanks for telling me my feedback based on experience doesn't matter jackass.
I don't see how people on the net can't undertsand the scenario I'm depicting with unlocks being bad for offline versus. It's a bad idea for ANY fighting series. Lock the single player and online roster fine...but NEVER offline versus. NO ONE likes to not have their main ready to go when it requires single player play to attain them. The other player has to wait and it's unfair.
This game is just to colourful, hit box animation and effects just block the clearity of the action, well after I saw ho mvc2 was played with sentinel just rocket punching and supering you to death I have come to hate mvc. Until it a clearer game, yeah and what is with all that dust that comes out whem you do a move in ssf4. I think it should be reduced, the clearer the better. Mvc3 no way cvs3, now that is it.com
You can't really compare the issues of mvc2 to 3. That game was broke. Characters will not be able to do the same things that made mvc2 undesirable to some people. It's casual friendly and beyond the 100% combos (which time will tell if they're an issue or not), there's not much to worry about. As for the effects, I can see what's going on :/ It takes time to adapt. It's like DDR is a blur till you start to play it more and you can finally make sense of the arrows.
@30
I'm with you. Just because they used to do it doesn't make a very valid argument for it to keep happening.
@30 it's not as bad as you make it out to be. What are the chances of you entering a room, venue or friends house that "just" got the game and your character is'nt unlocked? I don't know, some tournaments I go I know I can't pick certain colors because it's tedious to get all of them.
Also i'ts pointless to have locked characters if you have them in versus offline. BUt this is probably your point. However, I would say the developers want you to spend some time in arcade mode a little bit. The new characters are your reward for that.
@everyone whining about lag:
Yes, there is SOME lag in SSF4, but 95% of fights are damn-near perfect. Nothing will match playing in person, but if you're like me and have no friends locally who play fighters, then it's a wonderful solution.
you guys must have the worst connection in the world wow. so much complaining. tvc doesnt even lag for me. i dont get it
Awesome so we have another game with an unplayable netcode.
Good stuff capcom.
I dont get the netcode issue. It's pretty good. Try playing SC4 online, you'll wanna kick a puppy. I'm not that great at SSF4, but my inputs are pretty precise with what I see on screen. It might be a bigger issue for 1 frame links, but i dunno. For online it's pretty damn good. I never see lag.
@34 Colors are different, those are bonus content I love that to be unlockables. If I go somewhere else it's fine, I can still play my character which is really the most important thing. But my personal issue is I go to friends houses and have game parties and not everyone will own MvC3. so we'll be on a fresh console and some of our mains might be omitted. If we want a competitive match we're hindered. It's not a all the time issue, but with SF4 and SC4 I've come across this issue where one of us must rudely spend time to unlock the mains. If you played Akuma or Gouken on SF4 you were out of luck because it took far too long.
The netcode is as good as can be expected. They did their homework. Capcom knows their fighters will be played till the day Microsoft closes the servers.
Yes, tight links can be messed up. Yes, Their is a lot of lag across states but this is the best we can do right now. GGPO is great and I wish they would use it just because we would have nothing to complain about even if it didn't work, but they knew the tech specs of their product and made the best call they could to make us as happy as possible.
And if you say you don't lag, realize how good you have it and don't tell people who do have the problem it's non-existent. That's like telling a smoker with cancer that you smoke and you don't have cancer. Great, but some of us do. Try living in the deep south or Hawaii or a foreign country. We all can't live in California. You ever notice the people with bad connections don't complain as badly as the people with good connections who suddenly experience lag? Their the ones screaming, "OMG Y No GGPO WTF!"
Thanks for listening.
@pwn_star well those are not the only things that are wrong to me about the game, I am not complaining about speed, but clearity. Then the 1 kick button issue really stupid mvc2 scheme was more interesting, I am sticking to only ssf4. Mvc3 no way and what is with all the non fighting characters on capcoms side, joke characters made to have exaggerated moves, let them put in real figure fighters not viewtfull joe etc. What a waste.
I live in México and sometimes I get to play SSFIV with people from Canada or UK and the connection is smooth. People complaining about the netcode are people with bad connection. Check your ports and your computer (if you forget to stop your downloads), maybe your net get stolen.
@41 You know what, now that you mention it. I remember the days that all you needed was a memory card. Thats all you needed to transfer unlocked data like character unlocks and stuff. Now all save data and extra content is tied to the console you own and if it's not your account your playing on the data don't work. That means unlocks and saves are obsolete unless you can get online. I guess you have a point. I miss those days.
ya. like if i had some wayto access my account and get them fine. The issue is only on a fresh console. I have no problem unlocking my characters for personal use, that'll be fun. It just sucks if i go to my friends house and he's like "naw, I didnt unlock sentinal...lets play!" and "I'm like...well f*ck the Knicks to you too sir".
I wonder if you guys actually understand how the internet works in terms of competitive games. Whether it be CoD or SF4, what matters is your upload speed. If the data someone is sending to you is inefficient, then you will lag. Your connection is only half the story. The US is littered with horrible connections, as Daigo stated when he played online in the states (and he loves online in Japan).
Checking your own connection is nice, but that won't stop you from lagging if you're fighting someone with bad upload speed.
@"Except, you know, there's nothing wrong with the netcode at all. Stop playing with red bars." - That's misleading, because green bars sometimes lag and red bars sometimes don't. It's not enough to go on to really tell if their connection will stay solid, lol.
The US just has crappy internet, net code can only do so much.
SSF4 is pretty good for me against anyone with at least a yellow connection. I just hate it when I see someone with a yellow/green connection, join the match, and then they show up as orange/red.
will they have themes?
