With a pocketful of GEMS you can dramatically change the stats and abilities of your characters in Street Fighter x Tekken. We’ll be releasing more and more information soon but to start with here is a great explanation and some of the menu screens of where you select the GEMS, you can also see the special restorative powers of some of the GEMS.
A total of 57 GEMs (5 Assist and 52 Boost) come standard in Street Fighter X Tekken. Players have the ability to equip three different GEMs that improve upon weaknesses or capitalize on strengths to enhance their inherent play style. The two types of GEMs, Assist and Boost, each have specific advantages and disadvantages.
Players can select any combination of the Assist GEMs, which provide helpful bonuses that are always activated but balanced by handicaps in other areas. Conversely, Boost GEMs provide a stat increase in one of five areas (attack, defence, speed, cross gauge, vitality) but require a specific condition to be met in order to be activated.
As an example, a particular speed Boost GEM will be activated automatically after a player blocks 2-3 stringed attacks from their opponent. As GEMs are assigned prior to a match, the activation conditions for the Boost GEMs are hidden from opponents, promoting an element of surprise that requires players to think and act quickly.

Capcom unity has a better explanation, I think, and has screens:

they went from saying 100's were on disc to 57. So i guess the rest are dlc paid installments.... Sorry but im not feeling that...
I just pre ordered my one hit ko gem. I'm gonna be the best SFXT player ever.
Hmm... It's not THAT bad. Reminds me of Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2.
I've been fairly pro-gems up until now, when it wasn't 100% sure that you wouldn't have access to specific gems unless you pre-ordered them from a specific source. I assume the pre-order packages will go up for DLC at some point, but this again is pretty lame.
There's something that I really don't get on the capcom-unity post. It links to an image of all the default gems and what they do, and one of them is -40% meter usage, and the activation condition is activating pandora mode. Don't you already have infinite meter in pandora mode?
If it were just another system 'Within' the game I could get on board. Hey, I'm willing to try new stuff!
But "Collectors Exclusive", "Retailer Exclusive", "Paid DLC" attributes!?! The moral implications of this is killing the hype for me. Probably most of you as well.
Paying for cosmetic DLC is fine and dandy. I love Non game changing DLC!

But paying real money to affect how fast you move? How hard you hit? To recover health? Wtf?
Next time will they charge to use a Shoryuken?
I'm all for change... If it's for the better! This is getting out of hand.
Aluppoj, not to mention those DLC gems will have an incentive to be good other wise no one will buy them and capcom will lose money.
As we all know, capcom is a business.
Might as well just hand over your credit card over if you buy this game.
The auto block gem seems like it might be legit at high level as well. I would gladly sacrifice meter for keeping my characters alive during ambiguous mix-ups that could cost me the game. Top players in MK9 always use breakers which sacrifices 2 meters just to keep their character from dying and I can see a similar thing happening in SFxT too.
If you can put an assist gem on 1 character and the boost gems on the other, you could just use the character with the boost gems as a battery. Well IDK. I'm confused.
Just play without equipping them. this $hit is ridiculous And has gone to far I feel more like people are going to be spending more time choosing what gems are best then actually learning to play the game. Capcom failed with XFactor in mvc3 and they are gonna fail with gems in SFxT what a way to ruin a perfectly good game

...why would you walk into a fireball in the first place?
and it's +60 so you can keep doing that if you like but you arne't getting full health

I got that much but you aren't getting back as much as you're losing so it's pointless. You're still losing damage, however little, right? you're just purposely taking a little LESS damage. You aren't gaining much ground since it would knock you back and they might even get their gems activated.
The "pay to win" aka DLC gems aspect of it is what kills it for me. Sorry Capcom, but I will not be supporting this kind of BS with my wallet. No big deal tho', there are lots of other interesting FGs coming out in 2012 to keep me busy for a good while.
Once again, take away gems add revamped focus attack, keep everything else problem solved.
Am.. am I the only one who thinks GEMs could be fun?
@36
None of us are hating on the gems system itself. I think it's got potential to be really fun.
It's just one thing.....just one thing....that's holding the game back.
DLC/Pre-order gems that you can't unlock on disc but have to buy...essentially pay-to-win.
I hate the gem system!!!
