An air-dashing Ryu? Invisible health bars? Regenerating Hyper meter? Something's definitely different about the matches inside our upcoming Heroes & Heralds mode, which arrives soon as free DLC for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. In preparation for its impending release, we'd like to spend the week discussing the various aspects of this free add-on, which range from online and offline modes to elaborate character customization. There's a lot of great new content in here, so let's get to it!
First off - what is Heroes & Heralds mode? A sizeable update that adds a deep, customizable new angle to online and offline play. Each time you begin, you choose a faction - either noble Heroes or silver-colored Heralds of Galactus - and engage in a series of battles with the opposing side. Online battles pit you against human opponents, while the offline mode has you scrapping with AI teams.
But there's more to it than simply choosing teams - the real meat of Heroes & Heralds mode is the acquisition of Ability Cards that give your team all kinds of new powers. These abilities range from basic alterations (like a speed boost) to game-changing, combo-enhancing powers (like invisibility or the ability to pass through projectiles). Even better, said cards are based on classic Marvel and Capcom characters, so each and every one acts as a tiny cameo from someone you know! We'll go into card specifics later this week, complete with descriptions of their powers and the aforementioned artwork featuring dozens of beloved characters.
Heroes & Heralds is a standalone mode, and does not introduce Ability Cards into other areas of online play. That said, you can still hop into Training mode and try out your decks before taking them into the online or offline Heroes & Heralds mode. Find three cards that work best together (or suit your play style best) and see what happens!
Here's how the posts will break down:
Tuesday: A look at the online mode of H&H
Wednesday: Scrap with AI teams to perfect your H&H decks
Thursday: A card spotlight on three beloved Capcom characters
Friday: We'll end the week with a look at three Marvel ability cards
Monday: Three more Marvel characters receive an up-close examination
Tuesday: Closing out our week of coverage with three more Capcom cards
See you tomorrow for more. Until then, this thorough trailer should help recap the general topics we touched on today:

Beloved Capcom character..
Gee, I wonder who they mean (Kappa)
Take notes Ono, this is how you do customizable abilities. Separate from the main gameplay.
what? u can't play against people offline only A.I? well that sucks! so much for wacky side tournaments, the whole reason i was even interested in this
The end would of been more epic if it was "Ken" costume Ryu.
Part of me hopes they release limited edition cards for this mode. I collected the hell out of Marvel cards as a kid.
They emphasize free because this is the last time that we will get something free from them.
Meh. I"ll stick to the traditional gameplay x-factor only. Don't have time to fight invisible characters that run through projectiles. This mode will be hot for a month then it's back to the OG gameplay.
@3 Stay free, Chun. :P
I gotta have the parry card. The parry mechanic is pretty much made for Marvel.
Are we able to play humans offline? From what I've read it doesn't look like it.
people need 2 stop saying that wesker is the most broken thing that was ever in a fighting game.
he gets eaten by every other top/good character. the only problem here is the same as with vanilla phoenix...x-factor.
i'm not saying he's a bad character but people act like there's no freaking way 2 beat him...
@22
Another overlooked aspect about wesker is his assist. He helps a ton to extend the combos of his team and also help set up unblockables. He's a huge threat on and off the team.
@19
Lol you Said OG gameplay on a topic about MvC3, you are an epic comedian.
"he gets eaten by every other top/good character."
Not really,the only top tier character that gives Wesker a hard time is Zero,everyone else he does pretty good against.
He's not broken,but he has so many things going for him its hard for him to beat him in alot of match ups.
WHAT??????
You can only play AI teams offline? Why the fuc.k can`t I play my friends offline??? Why would you not allow me to do this Capcom?
So now I can either choose to play AI teams (YAWN), or play the freaking dregs of society which make up most of the XBOX Live people I run across...
Fuc.k you Capcom, fuc.k you for real. I just can`t understand why you wouldn`t allow this to be 2-player offline.
@#1, 2 & 3
Because they know you'd whine if it wasn't.
@#26
Shut up they have been saying since it was announced that in was one player offline learn to pay attention. Jeez ya'll complained when ya'll couldn't play AI vs mode unless you activated it in training now your doing it because you can't fight a actual person?
@27
Obviously this is the first time I have read about it idiot not everyone receives information at the exact same point in time. And I never complained about not being able to play AI before so shut the fuc.k up ou fuc.king cun.t
@25 That's only because Zero has no bad matchups, but even then Zero hasn't been considered broken (yet). Idk why Wesker is frequently brought up as the issue.
I like how they emphasize FREE so much.
