Anyway, for one thing, it's 3 speed gems at once, secondly, it didn't show how they got activated (It's not X-Factor, people!) and third, can't you guys wait until you've played the game with the gems before you decide if the game's bad or not? Makes the jumping look a bit silly, but no big deal; I imagine having three speed gems active is a vanishingly rare circumstance.
Why would tournaments want to leave gems out? Everyone keeps saying that without explaining it. Why can't gem selection be a strategic part of tournaments? It eliminates the "I might have to pay for them!" panic button that seems to bother most of you, even if I am also not sure why that's such a big deal.

BTW I think the gems could be a fun little mechanic. This is a crossover fighter where things are "more" over the top then the normal games. Which is what makes them...hmm dare I say it...FUN! The game is honestly looking like a ton of fun and I have slapped my money down for the special edition of this(and Soul Calibur 5) because I like how it looks. What I do get annoyed at are the people on here who talk like they have played this. While some of you on here probably have gotten to play early builds. I know more then half you whiners have not
Another note, everyone keeps talking about "tournaments" with this game and high level playing and how this game will ruin it. The part that amuses me is only about 30%(that is me being generous) of the users on here are trying to be pro at this. Tsh! Kids these days

like instead of doing lets say a 5 hit combo you have to do a 2 hit combo or something. Also bought gems will always be non-one time use most likely. Or even less of a difference
They are selling them cause some players like to just drop money for items cause they do not want to spend the time playing to get it. If you look at PSN or XBL's stores there are a number of DLC that simply unlock stuff that you can get in game. It's the same kind of market a lot of games use now. Like MMOs. That's why you see sub fees disappearing cause people WILL pay money to try and get the "edge faster" it's business.

the "they are already in game but you can buy them" works like this.
they are in game to unlock but you can pay immediately to unlock them; or they are the same gems but with different activation requirements, this activation requirements can, hypothetically, be just different, or outright better/worst
and you think you would fight a Dhalsim with Cammy's speed trough the entire match? serious? in case you arent up with news, gems, as far i remember, have activation requirements, such as "land a special" or "tech a throw" or even "do a barrel roll"
and as you activate them they wont last for ever, they probably last at most 10 secs i would figure.
also, the speed this Gief had was not that much, and i think Dhalsim is slower, meaning he would not reach Cammy's speed.
and if he has 3 gems JUST for speed, its a strategy. you, your self, can have 3 for dmge, that once requirements are met, you can dish a slightly more powerful combo, completely owning his speed if you manage to hold it out.
when they say its balanced i try to believe it, at least dont go on hating something when its perfectly, in theory, balancable.
as it was said, this is ot X-factor, or something that is on for the whole match.

You don't seem to understand why people hate Gems. Let me explain that to you.
Alright, Gems are DLC no problem as you say so because they're the _same_ right? But in the same sentence you say they've got different activation conditions? Doesn't that make them different Gems? Same effect, different activation?
Anyway.
In case of gameplay this means if I buy those Gems I have multiple Gems with the same effect but with different activation conditions. That means that I've got more options, right? That on the other hand means I can suit in more different situations because of more Gems.
TL;DR
Same Gems with different activation conditions = More Options = Advantage
means
Buying DLC Gems = Advantage
means
It's not an even playing field for everyone. That's what everyone hates about the Gems, and not the mechanics itself dude.

I understand but the "advantage" is so tiny if even(depending on play style some may find them horrible) someone bought it there would be very little difference in the match. Look at Zangief there, that is THREE speed gems and he isn't even all that fast. (btw we are down to 3 gems now rather then 5)
Now if what you are saying is that people with money have a bigger advantage then normal players is the problem then shouldn't you hate all arcade stick users? They have the advantage and obviously money(those things are expensive) is that ALSO not fair?

But the point of most normal, non complainers is, nothing finalised, there are no definites at this point. So all that you wrote is just based on assumptions and speculation.
Arcade Stick contains learning it.
It's not like an Arcade Stick makes you magically a better player, idiot.
My tourney partner is better on controller than I am on stick. The only advantage I got so far, is I can plink everything easier than him. But he learned to plink on controller, so there's no difference and it's a even playing field.
I was a good controller user too, but switched to stick and was hugely disappointed how hard it is to use.
Oh also, a PS3 controller goes for about 90 Swiss Franks in my country and a Arcade Stick with shipping is about 110 Swiss Franks. The difference isn't big to buy a stick.

the point that most ppl QQ about IS finalized. and that's the problem. Preorder EXCLUSIVE gems are nailed.
Also, those "_THREE_" Gems make Gief's jumping looking like Blanka's jumps and those have a really good speed and ark. As well as his dash is almost as quick as the dash of Cammy and Cammy's dash isn't the worst either. To you it seems a small change of frame data but on the other hand it makes a difference.
Imagine a Makoto with three speed Gems. Her dash would be _insanely_ fast. Almost unpredictable.

Theres still people bitching about gems, i have already said this on a earlier post "if u dont like the way the game is turning out mainly due to the gems/pandora then why are u still poking around checking out this game". i just dont get it, ya come and post ya not gonna get it every chance ya get on every new video that comes out for the game. i think we all get that u dont want the game but what i dont get is why are u still looking into it if ya already made up ur mind about not getting it. and so what if u gotta pay for gems, if u were into card games like yugioh or pokemon ya wouldnt hesitate to go out and buy the best card and ya wouldnt be complaining if ya were to buy costume packs for characters in ssf4 or map packs for call of booty: modern fagfare 3. the reason why people dont like pandora is cuz its not a comeback mechanic which is what alot of theses noobs want and the whole idea of gems seems to go over everyone who hates this games head, gems are to make every character unique and to help alter the character into playing more to ur play style not to give someone a unfair advantage and take skill out of the equation.

It took me 8 months to get on the equal level where I were with controller...
And I was PLinking on controller as well as "OS-ing". To relearn that muscle memory and to learn not to think about my inputs took me a while until my first DP came out without me really noticing that I'm "AA-ing" that Gief.
I'm no bad player. You'll find my Sakura in the Top 8 on PSN... xD Follow my replays and decide yourself.

I don't honestly care how good you are(I'm a sakura player too) cause of people who pretend they are "pro" I don't. I just play fighting games for fun. I can use a stick but it didn't take me that long to learn how to use it. I do prefer controllers though. I'm a small guy(damn my irish blood) with small hands(me and my 360 don't like each other) so I use controllers(ps3 is what I play on)
but if you wanna go a few rounds for fun with me sometime I wouldn't mind even if I am getting my ass kicked. My psn is gamersdan.

i was reading, and agreeing with you most of the time, but i believe you have a somewhat invalid point there.
Tournament organizers, as i imagine, have to buy or get from somewhere, x number of consoles, x number of tvs and i dont know how it works with computer.
now, what 76 said is somewhat right, it will take a while for people to set their characters even if the gems are all unlocked, IF they allow gems in tournaments.
you should not be "forced" to buy/have a usb to store your characters.
then again, i dotn freaking care about tournaments, i dont know how Capcom takes it when making the games, "tournament scene, or normal audience scene" but i would think they take the regular audience into consideration first, and i, as a regular audience or consumer, dont care about that, i have my own save i play as i want.
the game will be balanced, i believe more so than MVC3. and although i doubt that you will have to buy gems to be competitive, wich would be so freaking stupid, they will bring that extra "humph" the game needs IMO.
the game is ugly IMO, dont ask how, hard to explain, its ugly, so the Gem gimmick might add something to it.
i take it that 2 months in, people will be complaining has they have all 3 gems active and they dotn even make that much of a difference, that they should be buffed.
like "wth? shoryuken does 195 dmge, with 3 gems, it only did 230"
i would say Jill and Shuma are also mean to be more competitive, if you have 2 chars i dont have, you have more options= advantage. and if i dont have them, i cant even play against them to train or know how they work.
so saying buying gems with different, MAYBE easier conditions gives you advantage cuz you have options, than i say because you have 2 more characters, you have WAAAAY more advantage than i do.
TL;DR Capcom was gonna do a great vs game, but the fan took a arrow to the hate and went rampage.

Gems, no gems blah blah blah. I'll be the judge of the game when it's released, play it, play around with all the mechanincs in the game and THEN determine how I feel about the gems. Something everybody should trying doing before making prejudgments. Nothing wrong with having an opinion about them, but some of them are just ridiculous.
And for the people crying No (insert Tekken or SF character her, no buy), get over yourselves. They may not bring back all the characters you want, but they have brought back characters that haven't been seen in ages. Not everyone is going to be pleased and I'm sure there aware of that. Somebody, somewhere will not be satisfied with the overall product of this game. It's just how it is with all games.

From what I've seen the longer combos require canceling/switching into your partner which would negate the progress towards that character's gem activation, IE if Ryu was about one hit off in a combo to activate his power gem and switches in Ken then Ken would start on his combo, switch Ryu back and Ryu would have to work from scratch.

I was gunna say the exact same thing. I personally would love for gems to be good instead of saying its bad without the game even being out but the fact that gems are here is too risky.

Agreed! F**K this game! They could have done all this gem garbage with Powerstone, it would have made sense, then. Stop the crossovers and revive some more franchises. That would have been cooler.
I might buy it but its still a money grabbing scheme by Capcom. Still really messed up that they are making us pay for things that dont even require much effort on their part. The gems are basically like... having to pay to unlock more damage for your character. Something that doesn't require Capcom to make any models or animation, just patch existing stuff very easily.
This is just the first step. Whats next? I can see a future where Capcom games totally screw us over even beyond gems. Thats the scary part. And not only that they are screwing over arcades with this game. ... man really I wish there was something we could do about this.
