Capcom employees Seth Killian and Christian Svensson made some interesting posts on the Capcom Boards recently. Svensson states that sales of Darkstalkers on the PSN will be used to gauge interest for a potential future product, and Seth talks a lot about the gem system in Street Fighter X Tekken.Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors on PSN is moving forward, is this something Capcom will be looking at to gauge interest? — Everyone's Friend
Svensson: It's safe to say that one criteria we use to gauge potential for future products is to evaluate the sales of existing products. I will also say it is not the only criteria.
[Heavily condensed and paraphrased] I am very concerned about the gem system in SFxT. — GarudaSmash
Seth Killian: Thanks for the thoughtful and in-depth questions.
I'll let Sven speak to DRM issues as PC gaming is his forte, but as to gems, I have to ask for a little patience. I understand every aspect of your concerns. I should also say we probably should have said less about them until we were in a position to show more with a publicly playable build. Letting people go hands-on so they can answer gameplay questions for themselves alongside our answers has been a constant pillar of our strategy with the fighters. While we've had SFxT out for people to play many times, we weren't able to do that yet for a build with gems, and that's caused lots of trouble.
We plan to fix that by getting builds out there to play after the holidays, alongside new info about the games, but overall it should be said that this game has a bunch of new ideas, both for Capcom and for the fighting genre. We may not get every one of them perfect the first time out, but that's why we're talking to our players so much--to figure out what works and how to make the most of it. I definitely understand the concerns and how some things take a different path from what people generally expect from a fighter, but this is a new thing exploring ways that DLC can keep a fighting game interesting and fresh over a long period of time without necessarily having to sell you a new disc, by mixing both free and paid content. Apart from thinking about a game as a platform rather than a more traditional stand-alone product, I should also say that the gems themselves are actually really interesting.
They are different varieties of powerups, sure, but because of the activation conditions (you don't just get the powerup, you have to activate it first even after you pick a gem) they go right to the heart of what's best in fighters--the mindgames. Just as a very basic example, my opponent's Abel may have a gem that activates when he lands two special throws. He marseilles rolls in for a mixup--do I think he's going to go for a regular throw? Tornado throw? A second roll? It's a standard Rock/Paper/Scissors kind of guessing game that make up the backbone of fighters, but now he has an added incentive (activating the gem) to go for that Tornado Throw, but I know that he has that extra incentive, and he knows that I know, and we're off to the races. When you think about multiple gems and different activation conditions, it makes for a lot of really interesting mindgames, and that's only even in actual gameplay. There's also the metagame of actually choosing gems that work well for you and your playstyle, gems that may work better for particular characters, and gems that have synchronicity together. Because all the gems are strong in different ways, there's a lot of different ways you can create your own approach. Of course even the best gem setups won't win you a match--that still comes down to the traditional elements of zoning, footsies (LOTS of footsies), matchup knowledge, etc., but it's a pretty rich new element to add to the existing traditions.
Anyway, hopefully you'll be able to see for yourself before too long, and I hope the fighting game community at large can try to come along with us on this ride--it may have some bumps but I think it has a lot of possibilities to expand the genre in different directions. We will still have our core, more traditional titles (of course SFIV is getting the free AE 2012 update in a few days), but rather than simply release SF to infinity and beyond, we can also explore some new directions.
Does the language barrier keep a lot of Capcom Japan employees from coming on and reading the Unity Boards? — Zetta
Svensson: The language issue is a big one but there's at least one team with several members that can understand written English well enough to capture information direct from the source.
How do you decide whether to support custom music on PS3 games? — Smashbro29
Svensson: It's a producer by producer decision. There's no over-arching mandate from on-high about support of that feature.
@1 Exactly what I wanted to say brother. They are not serious with bringing back that franchise.
Will there be a demo to try first on xbox 360?
Last time I bought MVC2 and that game sucked. It reminded me why I stopped playing fighting games for a decade. They need to bring back children of the atom instead.
Also, what happened to the Super Street Fighter IV Anime, Live-Action Dead Rising. Was that just a tease to buy the super lame edition game?
@5 well yeah there were overdone commercials just like the mk origins miniseries they were both actually cool but we will never see anything beyond youtube i think again
Wow, that short essay Seth just gave us made me feel kind of reassured that the gems will be something fun. I was on the rocks about it but he just made it seem pretty fun to me. This game was always a day one purchase for me anyway, say what you want about the gems, but the ability to have team battles in a SF game is always gonna be a good thing.
STFU Seth, trying to sell bull**** and convince us that it's a good thing? Shame on you.
If Capcom insisted on making a "GAME MECHANIC" paid DLC exclusive in a God damn fighting game, then I sure hope they'll fail so hard and instead of waiting 8 months for Super SFxTekken they'll be forced to release it in 8 days AKA Free GEMS edition.
Are they looking at the release of Darkstalkers on PSN like they looked at the release of MegaMan Legends 3 on the 3DS?
Annnnyway, I can't wait to play Poison/Lily and make terrible puns about my team.
The only reason I'm concerned about gems is because it's just an extra burden on balance. With so many characters and character combinations it seems it will lead to lots of "this [insert character/combination/gem(s)] is overpowered" but on a larger scale than Sagat in vanilla SF4 or team Hong Kong in Ssf4AE
I dunno #11. I always say this but I think that there being "so many combinations" means there will never be a set gem combo you'll NEED to use. Also, as Seth said they won't always be a factor anyway. A Gief won't suddenly overtake A Sim just because he's loaded up on Speed and Attack gems since those would require he actually get a hit in on Sim in the first place, something that we all know is not an easy feat.
In short "It's easier to milk your costumers with exclusive DLC and a half a*ssed game than releasing a disc update after 6 months of original game release and not pissing them off."
Let me give you a very useful advise:
Make a COMPLETELY FINISHED game with EVERYTHING ASSESSABLE from the get-go in the first place. That's how you make a good game.
Capcom said this about MML 3 and then they canceled it. F*** Seth Killian
then gauge it by releasing vampire savior 2 instead..
Whenever anybody gives the "We promise to make this if you guys buy this first" response, it always reminds me of TvC.
Capcom, February 2010: If enough people buy TvC: UAS, it might compel us to make another Marvel game.
Capcom, April 2010: We'd like to announce MvC3. We have been working on it since 2008.
The PSOne Darkstalkers release being a gauge of sorts for a future product, is a lil' bit hard to swallow, given the subpar version the release was back in 1996 (vastly delayed because it was originally supposed to be released a couple months after PSX came out in 1995).
The better choice would be to release a translated Darkstalkers Collection from PS2 to expose ALL versions of the game. Or if Vampire Savior OE, then make sure all stages, and music are available, too...just sayin'.
@14, why release a good game when we keep buying bad/incomplete ones? ;-;
I... may have put in too much text. (I'm GarudaSmash)
I really wish Seth addressed my (well, pretty much everyone's) concerns about the DLC gems. The game doesn't seem too ideal as a competitive game, unless banning gems becomes the norm, which kind of defeats the purpose of the gems in general. I can't imagine the gem system having a much better legacy outside of the tournament scene.
Bah...
God Hand will still be the #1 PS2 game on PSN.
@1 HD re-relase is expensive and it's not the safest way to gauge interest. This is about interest, they know the hardcore is not gonna buy the PSone version of Darkstalkers but many casual fans who remember playing it for nostalgic reasons will. It can be also said that Hardcore Darkstalker players will buy a HD version of Darkstalkers or a brand new one but casual gamers may not go for it all because they were not interested from the beguinning.
In other words it's a safe bet the hardcore will buy the game but casual gamers are different, if it does'nt hold their interest long enough it's not worth the investment thus a new darkstalkers may never get made. Just let them do their focus testing and keep voicing your support.
How about a darkstalkers PS1 demo? Everyone loves a free demo!
Do they even do demos for PS1 games on PSN?
> Seth Killian: "...but this is a new thing exploring ways that DLC can keep a fighting game interesting and fresh over a long period of time without necessarily having to sell you a new disc, by mixing both free and paid content."
I still don't like how that sounds. Even if the gem system itself turns out fine, the fact that players are not going to be on a level playing field still bothers me. People that spend more money on gems would have an advantage over those that don't, simply because having more options always gives you an edge over someone with fewer options. Not to mention the DLC gems will most likely be at least slightly better that the "default" ones, otherwise nobody would buy them.
Seriously Capcom, why not just make all the gems available to everyone from the get go?
I actually prefer the direction that Capcom is taking with DLCs (gems and characters).
This way there will be one fighting game which Capcom can justify keeping unreplaced for a much longer period of time since they continue making money from it. New characters and items keep the game fresh and interesting for years to keep people interested. People who buy the game day one won't have to worry about the community moving to the next version.
It's still a question of will it work out but at least someone is trying.
We don't care about gems!! Announce characters dammit!!!
All this Gem Talk hurts my Head o.O I wish this Gem System was a Mode in the game and not force on people to play it cuz this is making every1 go Nutz man. Another thing that bothers me is the game mechanics (ABC ez mode) didn't like how mvc3 felt, not sure if i'll like how SFxT would feel also :/ Shame on Capcom they should stick to what they know and not take a Gamble like this.
I don't know if Capcom knows their history or somebody is suffering from Alzheimer. The original Darkstalker is not a fan favorite compared to Vampire Hunter/Night Warriors and Vampire Savior.
Add to that the PSOne version is one of the worst ports ever, it wasn't even ported by Capcom but an outside Dev house.
Guess no Darkstalkers for Us !
The subject of having too pay for gems is yet again avoided.
As it stands I like the Gem system. I think personally its going to be pretty interesting and like Seth said its going to add extra mind games to the game cause I'm going to want to get someone outta my face as quick as possible before they can use those gems. Not to mention people I think some forgot that this is 2 v 2 so now what if there were specific gems that the player wanted to use for Ryu but now there stuck with Gief because you took out there Ryu what happens now? Trust me people just try it a lot of you need to do a lot of self reevaluation and read your commments and see just how insane most of you sound. I came from the early late 80's early 90's and let me break something down for you guys. Every time you popped quarters in that machine you were paying to play and as much as I played SF2 in the 90's before my parents got me the home version I guarandamntee that I spent well over what I should have in quarters playing those games. But back then I didn't care I was having fun with a game that I loved. In the arcade days with games like Strider they would purposefully make games harder just to make sure you had to keep popping quarters in those machines. Its always been about the money guys its no different now than it was back then but for us it should always be about the fun.
I agree with Him! That is what they should have done ages ago with Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, it pissed me off to no end when I saw it going for a few quid on PSN along with Power Stone and SFAlpa 3 MAX and saw it was still only for the PSP!? Whoever thought of that needs to be fired!
Also if they were to give us the first Darktalkers they should have given us either
A) the arcade version
or
B) the Sega Saturn version
because we all know the PS1 could not do Capcom 2D fighters to save its life without dropping some important gameplay pieces and animation (ie no tagging in X-Men/MSH/Marvel vs Street Fighter/Capcom)
anyway rant over, also shout out to kakashiisagod for the Sonic ref, that made me laugh :)
I've never liked Dark Stalkers, I've never played it, more like ignored it, BUT I really like some characters, especially how narrative tackles their psychology. It definitely has one of the most intriguing personae in fighting games. Read about B.B. Hood, it's such a great character. Not to mention that I've always liked Morrigan, and have always played her on "versus" Capcom fighting games.
Seth showing capcoms true colors!!
Btw theres rumors of Gem Fighter x Tekken to have macro custom combos with activation buttons:
http://shoryuken.com/2011/12/01/uncon...
Game is for 3 year olds who likes colorful things and abcs combos and macro combos.
I like how the gem article is mixed with Darkstalkers article...
I which I was 12yrs old, then I'd be so hyped to play around with gems.
Also, it might be over-analysis, but Seth clearly stated that you could use the best set of gems, suggesting that there are better gems than others. If that's the case, why wouldn't everybody use them, unless you gotta pay for them or order from the right store? Omg this pill's so hard to swallow.
I have the feeling that people are making a confusion between Gems as a core mechanic and Gems as DLC. Gems as DLC are unacceptable. Capcom needs to know that they can't sell a core mechanic as DLC. Gems beyond, this problem, look interesting. They add more strategy to the game, in theory.
I figured DS would be used to gauge interest, but it's the worst game out of the three. We need Vampire Hunter and Savior, they're much better. Savior being the series Opus Maximum.
After all of the support and begging and dollars being held up, I feel like making a new DS would be easy money for Capcom at this point. Give us the big unveiling at Comic Con next year.
I keep seeing people saying that Capcom is not making a core mechanic available to everyone. There ARE gems that come with the game. That is making it available to everyone. You are not being locked out of anything, so let's cut it out with the exaggerations, shall we? It's a meaningless complaint.
They already stated that the DLC gems are not something that will be explicitly better than the ones you already have, they're just meant to have more variety for those that want it and as a way to test the waters to see how DLC is received. But I guess most people would rather get on the hate-wagon and blindly scream and shout and kick their feet about something we haven't even heard everything about yet. Yes, gems right now don't sound that appealing at all, but would it honestly kill any of you to wait for more information and for a build with the gem system actually in it to be shown off?
I really wonder how many of you actually read the responses that Seth and Sven give, because it seems like most of you just read "Gems" in the title of a news post and go right back to your complaining as if you were waiting all f***ing day to do so.
@ #49
No.
Gems not available to everybody IS locking out core content to cash on players, are you from Capcom?
And good job @ "they stated DLC gems won't be better", do you seriously expect them to say "they will be the best, so you all will have to buy them". Not to mention, nobody will bother buy them if they suck asses. It's pretty much a given that they will have some uses, unless tournaments ban them altogether, which will be fine.
There's a (very valid) reason people are making a fuss about gems, stop protecting them. You want this trash mechanic (auto tech etc) to be in? Fine, just don't try to milk on fanbase on top of it.
@48
The problem is that only a few thousand people waving their dollars at a convention and a relatively small and unspecified number of people demanding it online is not at all indicative of how well the game will actually sell globally. Fighting games are niche enough as it is, so they can't afford to take risks based on a miniscule number of people when they as a company HAVE to look at it from a global standpoint. This is how pretty much every game developer operates when it comes to decisions such as these.
That's why they need gauge interest in as many ways as they can, and one the most reliable ways to do so is to gauge the sales that a previous title in the series does. Could they have picked a better title for doing so? Definitely, but I imagine this isn't entirely up to them given how Sony handles PSN and the PS1 Classics selection in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually add all of the PS1 Darkstalkers eventually.
#49 Damn right dude I've been saying this to everyone. Like seriously we have not even seen a straight up full on gameplay video of how this works we got like a brief preview of it. It just goes to show that the FGC is shown as a bunch of babies crying about something they know nothing about. Oh and then AND THEN when we do get a explanation for anything its right back to "This game is sh!t blah blah blah Crapcom is greedy nyeh nyeh nyeh" It's always the same my god I really cannot stand this freakin thing about "Nyeh GEMS this a horrible idea it makes this a scrub game anyone can win at this only I'm supposed to be able to win cause I spend all day on my xbox for a tournament career that's gonna go no where" You know what I have a freakin job okay a 10 hour a day job that I have to work to make money to even buy this game in the first place. I have maybe an hour a day to practice and even then that is if I have that. Some of us have better things to do in our day than sit on freakin consoles allllllll day to practice this game and guess what if your getting bodied by scrubs online then that is your own fault you don't see the big wigs Daigo, Wong, Tokido, Poongko getting bodied by online scrubs do you? No you don't which just shows your own lack of skill not there's. If you are good at this game online scrubs should not even be an issue. Seriously alot of you need to grow up there is more to life than just these games you don't like it don't spend your money on it go play something else.
@50
I'm sorry, do you have a reading deficiency? Did you even read my post at all? Gems are available to everyone. They are not exclusively DLC. The core mechanic is available to everyone. DLC is not the only way to access the gems mechanic, you start with some on-disc, for free.
don't know how I can be any clearer than that. It must be nice to be so ignorant. You attack me about defending the gems when I specifically stated they don't even appeal to me. Sad.
Gems look like a cheap way to avoid balancing issues of such a large roster, since capcom never seems to get it right the first time. While at the same time making a profit out of it by calling it a new mechanic.
An ingenious business scheme which somehow pisses me off very much.
More talk about gems, more people whine about it. "Oh, I hate this game because I'm still to ignorant to do some research on what the gem system is!" I honestly don't care about the gems that much (although I find it innovative), I just want to know which new characters will make the cut, since they are gonna reveal some this month.
#52: I freakin' love you now because of what you said.
Lol am I getting the vibe this will be as a waste of time as Shadow Mode in MVC3?
Sorry Sven/Seth/Capcom and Co., I don't really want Darkstalkers: The Nightwarriors. I want Vampire Savior. Why should I have to buy a game I don't want to play to show you that I will give you money for a new one?
A 3SOE style package for VampSavior would actually be much more preferred!
they're idiots for no using vampire savior ex edition from the japanese store instead of the first game w/ such few characters, i bought it on my japanese psn months ago
#50 That's why Jill and Shuma are so godlike
waaaait a minute
@49 You get exclusive gems when you pre-order the game. Is everyone going to pre-order the game just to get those exclusive gems? No. So not all the gems are available from the start. Have fun buying an incomplete game mechanic. Look in the mirror and ask yourself who's ignorant.
I really don't see what the big deal is. Capcom and everyone else knows that they'd have damn near the entire community behind a new game... and with how bland and familiar most of the fighters out now are, new players probably wouldn't have any issue with giving DS a shot if Capcom tries to get people interested.
Knowing Capcom though they'll give it no exposure and low budget third rate marketing, then blame the consumers when it doesn't sell.
@36
If I still have the disc and the gems are tied to my account, then why do I have to to rebuy any of it?
I did however bought 3 versions of SF4.
@63 Everyone knows that there will be default gems, that's common knowledge, so why do you have to pay to complete the mechanic? That makes sense. -_-
@ #53
What's that, all you can do now that people burst your bubble is plain insults?
Some gems are preorders only at start, and some you will have to pay, Seth himself said they are experimenting. It doesn't matter that other gems are in game, when you cannot use ALL of the gems the game support.
That's what we know at the moment, if you really have some insider info (for which every gem will be available for free, and pre-order only unluck stuff you can get in get through playing), you'd better share it, otherwise you're just making things (all gems unlocked for everyone, no DLC) up.
And in case you didn't notice the fact alone that people are arguing over them is proof that they messed up, because before that garbage popped up every player interested in SFxT was hype.
#62 Yea but she isn't the best. I play Jill myself :P
And no DLC character has ever been better than a character that was on disc (Save for BB and Makoto but even then that was because of balance changes AFTER she was revealed)
If you're not willing to put in effort then why would anyone bother with purchasing your game? Especially if they own it already; I have all the Darkstalkers game for the psone. They should have gone the HD remix route if they wanted Darkstalkers to sell. I don't know what it is with Darkstalkers and Capcom. Street fighter always gets the majority of the investment and marketing while Darkstalkers gets very little. They need to make Darkstalkers happen fast because it's either now or never. Interest in fighting games is at its peek with Sony even coming out with its own fighting game. Darkstalkers biggest issue is FAILED marketing. Everyone I know who has played a Darkstalkers game loves it. The animation sprites are so good in that game; 10x better than any sprite based SF game.
@68
Explain in an intelligent way how the mechanic is incomplete. You can't because it isn't. The mechanic functions 100% with just the on-disk gems. You do not need the DLC/pre-order gems to "complete" it. How is this not clear for some of you? Complaints like these take the cake when it comes to complaining just for the sake of doing so. Honestly, if it's just the issue that you have to pay for more gems that you don't like, just f***ing say so.
@69
Again I need to ask if you have a reading deficiency. Seriously, do you? Or are you so incapable of forming a coherent response that you have to resort to twisting my words or assuming I'm implying things I clearly am not, because it sure seems that way.
None of the preorder and DLC gems prevent you from utilizing the gem mechanic if you don't have them. None. Weasel your way around that all you like but that is fact.
You can use the gem mechanic to it's full effect with what they give you on-disk. You don't have to like the mechanic, hell I already said I don't find it appealing in my first post, but to exaggerate about it being "incomplete" because of DLC and pre-orders makes no sense. There's a reason why no one has ever actually bothered to explain why the mechanic itself is supposedly incomplete...Likely because they (and you) don't actually know what you're saying.
To reiterate, not once was it EVER stated anywhere on any news site or from Capcom themselves that the pre-order and DLC gems have distinct advantages over the ones that come with the game and that they're required or necessary to use the gem system to its fullest.
And people argue over anything and everything. That fact that you're so adamant over continually responding to me is pretty direct proof of this.
But besides that, every new mechanic in every game is met with some degree of ridicule and complaining. SFxT has been no exception; Pandora mode got hate, one character getting KO'd leading to a loss of the round got hate, the ABC chain combos got hate. It wasn't all rainbows and butterflies before Capcom dropped the gems bomb on us.
@ 68 & 69
Is it really necessary to have access to all the gems though? It is said that the free gems will be good enough. Do you really need more gems you're may never use?
You say that having more options is better but did buying Jill and Shuma really made anyone better? Isn't just a case of them being different without any significant advantage?
People say that the paid gems will be better than the free gems. Are Jill and Shuma top tier? How about DLC characters in other games? Do companies really make DLC stuff top tier?
People say that there will be a best set of gems for all characters. Can anyone claim this with 100% certainty? Can one set really fit all the different archetype and playstyles?
The way Capcom has handled the whole gem issue might have been better, to say the least, but there's also something to be said about our collectective, premature response. There's hardly any significant info available and people whine like little kids.
It has been said that there will be hundreds of gems, but the focus lies on the 45 gems that come with pre-order (36) and the special edition (9), because "people who pay more, have more options" and "we get an incomplete mechanic".
By that rationale, people who bought Shuma and Jill for MvC3 had an edge over those that didn't, as they "had more options" and if you still haven't bought them, apparently you are playing an incomplete game. To me, characters are THE core of fighting games, because without them there's not much fighting, but it's silly to say that if you don't have the DLC characters your game (UMVC3, MK9, BBCS, and/or KOFXIII) is not complete. To say that about gems is even more foolish when you have several 100 at your disposal from the start.
By now we all know that people have "concerns", we have read them, over and over and over again. Now is the time to wait for more info, so you can make an informed decision whether you want to buy this game or not. Until then, try to be patient and stay optimistic, after all, it's only 1 game. There are and will be several others if you don't like this one.
Another question for the Capcom bashers: WTF are you doing here?
@ #75
So you say it's complete, when you don't even know what effects DLC/pre-order gems are going to give? How can you say that, you got a crystal ball?
What's next, you're gonna argue I can't say the system is incomplete because I too cannot possibly know? Lmfao.
How about you just say you you don't give a damn about the garbage gems are bringing upon us (auto bonus crap, inequality between players in the form of fewer options for those who won't pay, more difficulties for tourney organizers, possible divisions with tourney rules etc) instead of accusing people of whining over some dollars?
Gems are gonna be awesome simply because its never been done before, And in case you retards who cry about the gem system didnt notice, You have to experiment and bring change to innovate and reach the next level , Capcom single handedly revived the fighting game genre which was dead for years, so Ono san has my thanks :)
#81, guess you like buying pieces of the game mechanics as DLC's
Enjoy your $100+ game that comes incomplete from the store.
People who are whining about people who complain about the Gems like they're not willing to accept something "new"?
Do you even know how to read? 99% of the people have 0 issues with the gems, it's the "paid exclusive" DLC GEMs part that pissed us off, ALL game mechanics should be included in the main game without exceptions, I feel sorry for people who are too blind to see that.
@ 78,
Oh, the irony! One of the few geniuses who can type up a rational response has isn't able to spell Geniuzz. No really.
Honestly though, I agree with everyone that's complaining about the gem fiasco. DLC should be 100% cosmetic and non-game changing, much like the costumes in SF4, because if people choose to purchase it, it's because they're happy with the game and want to support the company. Dressing up Honda in a pink suit does not make pink suit Honda stronger than regular Honda, or give any kind of advantage only to pink suit Honda when there's a Honda mirror match going on - and only one person has decided to download the DLC.
Gems should not be DLC, and gems should not be offered as a pre-order bonus, if gems are game mechanics. It's as simple as that. Gems aren't cosmetic! Gems give you advantages, and people who pre-order or choose to buy the DLC will have an advantage over everyone else who doesn't choose either.
That's essentially Capcom telling the consumer to pre-order the special edition to have the best advantage over everyone else who chooses to purchase the regular edition - er, what? Even if the pre-order/DLC gems are insignificant in bonuses given, it's still an unfair advantage to the consumer in general, provided they don't buy the special edition. At the very least, market it similar to EA's DLC in sport's games. It's all unlockable IN-GAME, but if you want you can purchase it anyway without having to meet the unlocking conditions. That way, even though this setup still sucks, it's fair for everyone regardless of whether or not they have the special edition.
I won't be buying this game on launch. I've lost faith in Capcom and Seth when he says "there is no new version planned..."
After SSF4 was released, no new version was planned, and AE dropped. After MvC3 was released, no version was planned, and UMvC3 dropped. We're being repetitively lied to and gouged.
Also, of course, because of the whole gem thing. It's unfortunate because those who do choose not to purchase anything aren't going to sway the tides of change, anyway. This game will appeal to so many people just because of the two franchises involved in the crossover. Casual fighting game fans, like #81, are going to buy it regardless.
@#49
Yes of course there are gems available to everyone with the game. Butter people are upset that some people will have access to other gems unless you buy those as well. Capcom has said that dlc gems won't be better than other gems. Obviously we haven't seen these gems in action. Regardless, the crucial fact remains that capcom has a history of lying OVER AND OVER to their fans. Their fans have every right being skeptical or angry over this situation. Its not just every other scrub/casual player that hates this. A lot of us do.
Damn cell. Meant to put but not *butter. Mmmm....butter.
@#63 gtfopanda & kernelticks do know how to read. #49 's comment could of been interpreted in 2 ways unless he clarified. Which he did after someone responded.
If you want to gauge interest then release Darkstalkers 3. Who wants Darkstalkers 1?
Vampire Chronicle the Dreamcast version that only came out in Japan, is the best version since it includes ALL characters and fighting groves from all past Darkstalkers games, plus 100% arcade perfect animations/framerate.They shoulda chose that version instead,Capcom is just beating around the bush with Darkstalkers. How bout CvS2!?That game is still BEASTLY fun and competetive.
Gems are a gimmick for DLC cash.If they werent then all gems should be available to EVERYONE on disc!!!

Having that problem is understandable, but what's the difference between DLC characters and DLC gems? You people have been supporting other types of DLC, so I'm not surprised they don't think much differently about gems. In their eyes, they are offering tons of gems on the disc, and offering a few as DLC seems normal.
I really hope that some of you that are unsatisfied actually speak with your wallets for a change and not buy the game at all. It's the only way to get your point across.
And 81 isn't a casual fan solely because he supports the system. Sounds like to me he just supports innovation...and sometimes innovation comes with a price. Hell, this whole thing could be a huge failure for Capcom, and it's a gamble. I really don't care about throwing extra money at them if DLC is worth it because I know they are going to keep releasing products that I enjoy, so I will see returns if they see success. Granted, I have not bought any DLC so far aside from the AE update, but i may buy the gems if they are fun.
about the darkstalkers release...well, you have to understand. First of all, darkstalkers was NEVER a *casual* fighting game like MK9 or MvC3 (don't get me wrong, these fighting games sure can be played in a tournament level but since they are easier than most fighting games, they CAN be considered as casual) so right off the bat, capcom is not trying to appeal the casual gamer. Hardcore fans of the series will immediately buy this game because..well..they're hardcore fans and capcom knows that. They want to know how many hardcore fans there is to be sure they can get a new DS going on.
And about gems being DLC lol...i can almost assure you that if there are actually going to be DLC gems, they will be for trolling purposes like INVICIBILITY or stuff like that. Obviously if gems like that will exist, they will be banned from the tournament scene. Still, it is too early to be b*ing about this game so sit down and be quiet
1) If you whine about gems (balance, OPness, etc) without actually playing the game yet (or even seeing a playable build which noone has) STFU already. You're like a little 5 year old kid crying that "you dont like it" over eating something that you've never even tried before.
2) Noone has said gems will be PAID dlc yet. Not saying they wont be, but until there's an actual "gems will cost $X amount official announcement" which there hasnt been from ANYONE yet any argument against them for that reason is absolutely moot and pointless bitching.

I never supported the idea of having exclusive paid DLC characters as well in a fighting game, just because it's something that has been done doesn't make it right.
If MvC3's DLC characters were Phoenix and Wesker or Wolverine, people would have made a huge deal out of it too, it's just that the ones in MvC3 weren't exactly that common or overpowered to complain about 'em, Gems will be much more common since they can be used with every character.
I for one am not willing to buy this game if they stuck with the paid DLC exclusive game mechanics, that's too pathetic for me to support. I know many feel the same way as well, I just hope that we're enough to make an impact on the sales and Capcom would realize what they're doing is wrong so they'd correct it.
I don't give a damn if she's even like 20 bucks for DLC or not I want Rainbow Mika. Her and Zangief as my team will freakin' rock!
#76 Technicality. They also come on a disc release (And they are part of a new version of a game anyway so it's hard to count them)
Meanwhile characters like Jill, Shuma, Freddy Kruger, Rain etc are all DLC and none are "top tier"
What fighting game would people play in 2012 if they want to avoid DLC?

featuring flocker and flash!
#101 Dunno about that, I'm pretty sure there's an in game store for costumes and such
I'm suprised that no one said that the gem system is clearly a somewhat Power Stone/Gem Fighter ripoff. collect stones, become powerful, etc.
Capcom, seriously? People should be interested in Darkstalkers, because let's face it, Street Fighter is getting way too much love and much as I love the SF franchise, SF itself is seriously becoming overrated. Capcom made Power Stone, Rival Schools, Star Gladiator, which were good underrated fighters that still have appeal to this day and still make comebacks.
AE 2012 better be the last of the SFIV, because I'm actually ready for a whole new SF game. SFV.
Now as far as SFxT goes, I'm still getting it because of the fact that no one thought this crossover would ever happen. Didn't they say they couldn't find a good way to implement the pandora mode so they gonna take it out or whatever? It may apply to the gem system. There are still concerns regardless of the availability of the gem systems DLC or not.
One more thing, Capcom, you need to spend more time making a complete game and prevent more milking of the same damn game! Capcom has been doing this years, but seriously? You would think they would better methods of game balancing by now and less milking of the same game.
Oh now you're trying to troll Darkstalkers fans?
Another day, More Capcom headlines regarding them spitting on their fans & franchises. *SMH
Obviously Darkstalkers on PSN will sell like trash. Darkstalkers 3 is more robust & up-to-date & isolating it as a PSone Classics lowers potential sales. Looks like Morrigan can join Mega Man Volnutt, Strider, Viewtiful Joe & gang in the orphanage.
$%^& you again Capcom
If Capcom honestly and full heartedly wanted to "gauge" interest in DS, then they shouldve and couldve released Vampire Chronicles which had all of the DS games in one and were arcade perfect. Only problem was, that game was only released in Japan...I dont think we will get a New DS game because of their (capcom) non sensical release of a cut up, brutalized port of a game that was horrible and un playsble on the ps1...they could give a sh*t..
Thats so dumb. Darkstalkers on PSN is only a psone re-release so is not going to appeal to many. If you want to gauge the community do HD re-release of the game like 3S
