Vince over at Capcom Unity has posted a new update from Derek Neal, the producer of Third Strike Online Edition. In it, he goes over the upcoming DLC options. Read on to learn the details of the downloadable colors, music and matches that are coming as DLC down the road.
Hi guys,
We’ve been getting a lot of questions from fans about what DLC we’re going to be offering for SF3. Today, I’m happy to be able answer those questions!
First off, “Color Pack 1” will be launching next week, on September 6th/7th. The price for this is $2.99, and buying this one pack will add 7 new colors for each character! The colors are available in pretty much all modes, but can’t be seen by people who haven’t purchased the DLC. (Also, we weren’t able to save the color palettes in replay files, so please be aware of that.)
In addition to “Color Pack 1” (and future color packs), we’re proud to announce several other DLC offerings today, which should be showing up in the next month or so.
The first of those announcements is: a set of Music Packs(!), which add new songs. Specifically, they add…all the character themes from the first two Street Fighter III games, “New Generation” and “Second Impact”! But wait, there’s more. In addition to the Unlock Keys, Color Packs, and Music Packs, we’re also going to be offering Match Packs.
As some of you may know, we held a semi-secret tournament at the CAPCOM offices earlier this year, and called it Fight For the Future, 2011. We invited 16 high level SF3 players from all around the world to participate, including 4 from Japan. With these Match Packs, we are now going to bring that tournament straight to you, in the comfort of your living room. Each pack comes stocked with over an hour worth of content, and every single match is accompanied by professional commentary, recorded by the one and only: James Chen! Finally, there will be two of these Match Packs. One will cover the entire Tournament Top 8, while the other is a “best bouts” pack stocked with all the hypest matches from the event. Look forward to it later this year!
Cheers,
Derek
What do you think of having the original themes for some of the Street Fighter III characters? Will you download the color packs to get your hands on the extra palettes for your character? Leave a comment below with your thoughts on this DLC.

I'd buy color packs if the colors were cool. It's kind of a bummer that they don't show up in replays though. I also hate how you need to leave the game in order to switch the packs instead of the old "hold start while selecting" method.
Music I'm not that interested in unless they include backgrounds too.
And tournament... I don't know. High level SF3 isn't that fun to watch unless they got some low-tier character specialists to keep it diverse.
What about dlc for the other stages from the previous two sf3 games? Id happily spend my cash on that
STAGES, Capcom. Stages.
Give us DLC for New Generation and Second Impact stages. THAT would be a cool DLC.
While you're at it, give us Sean's bonus, and the car's bonus stages as well. We've seen people do it at Mugen, you guys might as well do the same.
How about throwing in a quick 1v1 mode.. just playing with the same person over and over again,gets really boring.. just make it like rank mode with the rematch option, just in case you want to fight that person agian. this will solve alot of problems with people who just play by themselves and just want to fight and don't want to watch other people fight.
Lol nickel and dime you pack! Pay us for stuff that was once free cause we're too lazy/incompetent to come with with anything new.
Other than the music, every everything is crappy DLC because if we have to pay for it.
Capcom needs to use their brains and really think of genuine substantial content and then charge people for it. Seriously, charging people for color variations actually hurts the relationship with the customer.
Here is an idea for DLC for a cost:
An in-depth mode for each character that would teach us and allow us to practice character match-ups (in it would include set ups, reversals, pokes, frame-data, etc...) All of the information is already available, this game has 10 years of data, it wouldn't be very expensive.
No thanks.
I'll just play CvS2 and give myself $3 every time I make a new color scheme for someone in the edit mode.
Some people already knew about this DLC, so I'm not too surprised.. Also, you can look at the 3SOE credits to see some people that participated in the tournament
I like the music packs. I'm hoping they will include the ORIGINAL 3rd Strike arcade music. Then I'll pay top dollar for it.
look like there getting my money with these great dlc packs.
I think its just a damn ripoff all this stuff sould had been in the game from the start
Caustic, we don't have to buy it and you don't have to complain.
(So i'm confused - is the tourney playable like MVC3's shadow battles or just a video?)
I think it's just a video that you download in parts all for fight money
@29 And people shouldn't complain about things that they aren't forced into buying. It's like people whining about the option to put a subwoofer in their new car if they want to pay for it. What people refuse to understand is that Capcom is a business. If you're not happy with a dlc, don't buy it. I know, it's crazy that it's that simple.
People asking for a rebalance should just quit crying and actually learn the game. They already said they weren't gonna balance it and that they were gonna leave it untouched. Too bad so sad.
@25
Okay in all honesty, how many people have you come across that actually knew how to play Chun, Yun or Ken? I came across many C/Y/K and I beat them all. Guess who I used.. Twelve. More than half of them disconnected because they couldn't handle or something.
I've come across at least 3 people that actually knew how to play the game because they either provided a challenge or just downright raped me with more than half the cast in a single session.
The point is, your chances of coming across someone, amongst an entire community of people new to the game, that can actually play one of the three are very small.
You get way more Ryu's than anything else and they all play like it's SF4.
i wanna see that tournament of course i wanna hear that old skewl soundtrack. colors-meh
awesome! ng and 2i's music as dlc.
now give us ng and 2i's stages :D
about the color packs... fvck that, i'm not paying $3 for that.
it's funny how capcom still uses their money greedy marketing schemes, when games like mk9 hand out classic costume dlc's FOR FREE lol!
@9
aw man, now i want the parry and car bonus stages and music as well...
@14
lol you got that right.
@35 And you shouldn't complain about this. Your complaining has as much of an effect as theirs. None at all.
I think you just want to vent your frustrations... like they do.
OK.. So, i think this is total non sense from capcom. The music is cool wtvr. But the matches? And especially the colors? The colors should have been in the game from the beginning, because they were free in every other console versions of this game. Theres no reason for them to make it dlc. I hate this because i really like the other colors and now if i want them i have to pay for them. B.s dlc's over and over smh.
AND we have to pay for the dip switches!? Ridiculous and regardless of wether its 99 cents or 100 dollars it shouldn't be dlc in the first place so capcom that doesn't make it okay. Jeez, i would have paid for the game if it were 20 bucks and had what it should have gladly anyway. This is nonsense.
@47 I don't see how yours makes any more sense if both are futile. Actually, they have more of a chance than you do... you're trying to make people not act like people.
@48 If by acting like people you mean childish and spoiled, then yes. If people are unhappy with a dlc and choose not to purchase it, they aren't supporting what Capcom is doing. If enough people do it, Capcom might put out something that people are asking for. Sitting here going "Derp we n33d stages, scr3w you crapcom!" is going to do absolutely nothing. If you want a change in how Capcom runs dlc, then don't support how they're doing the dlc now by purchasing it. That's not very hard to understand.
@50 I understand it. I agree with you. I don't think you understand how people work though.
I'd also like to add that the idea of the game itself showing tournament matches with full commentary is something that could possibly progress the genre further. It's certainly forward thinking content, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a sign of things to come. As the tournament scene continues to grow and become more and more mainstream, it almost seems inevitable.
why does everyone want 3s balanced for? dont you guys see what they are doing on sf4-ssf4ae? "hey, the new players are having problems with -insert character- lets nerf him and people cant combo into ultra with viper after about 4yrs, lets make it easier" forget updates, thats why classics will always be better then new ish, people had to deal with it back then, now if enough people file a complaint BOOM new update soon
YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES!!!!!!
I have been waiting for this1 I kpt saying things to my friends about this. My..my dreams are coming true father.
Hope they in the backgrounds too. And we need Seond Impact Sean back! Maybe also voice changes so we can hear their NG/SI voices (Haduu... Buhst!)
@50
are you dumb or what?
if people say they'd rather have stages than colors, then changes are we might actually GET those stages and that capcom won't make the incredibly stupid decision of making alt colors dlc again next time.
what's your concern anyway? if people already say that they think the alt color dlc is stupid, then i have reason to believe those same people aren't going to buy them either thus they ARE speaking with their wallets. the complaints are just there to tell capcom why the alt color dlc doesn't work and what people would rather buy instead(stages for example).
@61
i can see that working. i've come across a few people who said they prefer 2i's character voices over 3rd strike's.
and with the parry system if you study any character you are having problems with, you will be able to win

@62 Remember all those people that said "Oh god, Capcom is milking it again, here comes SUPER Street Fighter IV." Look how many people bought that after whining about it. People whine about things on this site all the time, and then turn around and purchase it. Capcom makes people pay for these because they know people will buy them.
On a side note, I personally couldn't care less about the stages. I'm just paying attention to the sprites. So new colors > stages in my book. That's just me. But I can see why people would rather have new stages.
Now if they will only give us the old stages and allow us to switch between all three versions (not saying to play online with, it just be interesting to all three and see the differences)
Man what happened to holding start, and pressing a button to get secret colors. this makes me want to break out my ps2. $3.00 my A$$!
Capcom is seriously going overboard with their DLC strategy. Color Packs ? I remember how everybody in the forums asked for a color edit mode along with the older music and STAGES. Well guess the guys at Capcom said "look at SF4 they buy any DLC, lets make SF3OE our DLC milking machine !". They wants us to pay for color packs, so low of Capcom.
I keep getting impressed by exactly how little the 3SOE dev team understood their target audience. From the very beginning, as soon as the game was announced, people were saying "include the NG/2I stages!". When it was confirmed that this wouldn't happen, people said "include the NG/2I stages as DLC!". What are we getting instead? Colors, music and frickin' videos of some dudes I don't care about. You know how much it costs me to watch dudes play SF at EVO or SBO or GodsGarden? NOTHING. It costs me NOTHING to watch those matches. James Chen commentated EVO, too. Why do I give a crap about some tiny Capcom tournament featuring dudes who will probably be playing the game at SBO?
New Generation/Second impact stages would be nice.some really cool stages right there.
Colors and music huh?? Yeah thats good and all but dont you think the game needs FIXING first???? Online has a LOT of bugs, at least on psn, u have to search way to many times to get new lobby results and I cant really believe AEs netcode is better than this, 3s is teleport paradise online...
It amazes me that people still think that developers only do one thing at a time. They don't. This DLC has been planned long before the release of the game, before any of the issues were even noticed. And guess what, they can release DLC and fix the issues at the same time.
I hope you guys realize that everything they fix needs to be tested and then it's sent in for approval. It will take time no matter how easy the fix is.
#36 good point people are complaining about "three" characters meanwhile that only really applies to high level considering the majority of people online aren't high level people need to use who they want and stop crying over who other people use because it's top.
Hopefully this isn't all the DLC that is planned. something more meaningful to give 3rd strike a proper face lift.
@69
that was most likely when super street fighter 4 JUST got announced. people are likely to be skeptical about something before they've seen any of the new features. i'm not willing to believe that the same people, that were still complaining after all the features have been announced, will buy the game afterwards anyway. you just don't buy something that you don't consider worth your money.
and you know something? i said i wouldn't buy ae, because i didn't deem oni and e.ryu worth the extra five dollars. guess what, i still haven't bought ae yet and likely won't until they add the characters that i DO want in the game. i'll tell you right away though, that if they do add those characters eventually, i genuinely will buy ae just for completion sake.
People buy IV, Super and AE because they want to stay in the competetive SF lingo and its not that bad when it came to milking the series.
But this on the other hand IS, dlc for colors? COLORS?! I could understand maybe selling a color editor but idk...And the music packs will probably be 5 songs per set, and u cant choose what songs u want for 2.99-3.99 range. If the music soundtrack seems overpriced then i am probably not even gunna buy it.
They couldve made 3rd strike on a disc for 24.99-29.99 including the old stages with all these features and i would've bought it.
Look at KOF 98 Ultimate match it only released for 19.99 for ps2 in 2009 and $10 for xbla in 2010, added 9 new characters and new game modes, for ps2 jpn had online but us version didnt because scea didnt agree with 2d games worth it for online at the time, and 360 had online!
Nova, Capcom actually mentioned releasing it at that price back in June.
Here's what was said.
"I know some of you have noticed we have a DLC menu item in the game. While we’re selling it for $15 to hopefully attract a reasonably decent audience given the value it represents. We are hoping the DLC downstream will raise the ARPU (average revenue per user) on the title beyond that of what we’ve seen on other titles.
I think it’s fair to say that there are few better values for $15 for games, but we are also hoping that people get engaged enough to get a little more content. Could we have put everything together and sold it for $30? Yeah… but by putting together a compelling base package and selling the other stuff a la carte, we’ve given folks a lower barrier to entry and lets them decide what additional pieces they find of value."
Honestly, I rather have the overall package we have now, which is great for $14.99, than paying DOUBLE that like you suggested just for content that isn't even necessary. I rather have the option and the enticing price point definitely helps sales.
Can you imagine if the color pack was the actual 7 colors we had on the console ver of SF3 on ps2? if this is true then i'll slap Derek's face my goddamn self. Not to mention charging $3 for something that should've been on the game for free. Capcom knows no limits.
Wow, people are so hard to please. These colors are obviously going to be something new since the colors that were already in 3S are still there (the START colors requires being arcade mode to unlock the character's colors).
People that complain about DLC = Cheapskates that think they're entitled to EVERYTHING for free
F-CKING CAPCOM LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
1) That should have been a color editor. I would have gladly paid $5 for that.
2) Music ok. BUT WHAT WE REALLY WANT ARE THE STAGES. PUT THE New Generation and Second Impact stages, I'm sick of fighting in Elena's stage.
3) Meh. Those Evo 3s matches were sh-t. I'd just watch some awesome 3s matches from TheShend.
never heard the music from the older versions, hopefully its good.
3rd Strike has the worst soundtrack of all three SF3 games. It also has the worst stages. The only thing about 3S's soundtrack that shines is Akuma's theme. If I can play with on Dudley's New Generation stage with the New Generation theme, I will HNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHH!!!!
Colors are the best you can do for a sprite-based game. If they wanted to sell costumes, they'd have to get a team of animators to animate a ton of new frames for every situation/state the character who got a costume could be in. That takes a lot of time and a lot of money. Not giving you a color editor though is bull.
HOW ABOUT DLC where you can match-make per country? I'm an Australian citizen and though it's unfortunate that I don't have access to many SF3 players (Australia has 20 million people compared to 300 million in the USA) - but I'd rather play against those in my own country then have an unplayable, laggy games against Americans who immediately drop because of these conditions...
I want the arcade music for Street Fighter III Third Strike as DLC. want stages as dlc for street fighter iii second impact and music for street fighter iii second impact also.
Color packs are not hard dude. People have been doing Mugen for years, do you think Capcom can't do it in a more efficient way? The only problem with stages is if they are not the same size as the ones used in 3s. I highly doubt that though.
I payed for the colors in blazblue, I see no problem in it with an even better game. The music packs sound awesome, too.
NO DLC for me, no thanks. I've got all the achievements, finished it with everyone, done all the trials. I'm done playing 3rdSOE.
You bought a fighting game for single player things?
I'll pay for music and stages. But colors....you go too far Capcom, you go too far...
So now things that were free in sf4 have to paid for too? Were talking about a color swap right? Not actual costumes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
We didn't ask for colors...we didn't ask for new music...WE WANT A FREAKING PATCH!
@GUENTO
The DLC was obviously planned before the game released. It's not like they're deciding to ignore the bugs and release these in leiu of fixing those. They're two separate things. These are planned ahead of time before they realized what bugs are in there. Bug fixing is a separate issue.
So Capcom's basically charging people for colors & other certain extras that were already present in the older versions for free?
That's pathetic. Is Capcom that desperate for money?
*Sorry for double posting; was trying to get the bold & Italics activated.*
OMFG!! I'M SOOO GLAD I DIDN'T WASTE MY MONEY ON THIS 12 YR OLD PIECE OF MANGLED UP SH1T!!! charging for colors now? so sad.its not like a crap load of ppl (myself included) didn't nearly flood unitys suggestion box and make threads requesting a color edit mode for 3sOE during its whole dev cycle from the day it was 1st announced. nah we didn't do that. music and stages I understand (& would gladly buy) but colors? that's where my respect for capcom died a little.
I believe charging for colors is a bit silly, especially when people asked for a color editor. I mean, if it's just colors, why not allow them to do their own thing? They could charged $4.99 for that and it would have been a fair price.
Kind of lame how the III Strike team isn't giving the fans what they want, but oh well, maybe it'll happen sometime later on down the road.
You guys also have to remember III Strike isn't a casual friendly game. You will have to take your lumps and get good, the parry mechanic is your trump card. With it, you can win with anyone, even Hugo. While it might take a month or two to get good at SF4, it will take 4 - 8 to get even decent at III Strike (I suspect).
I player for about a year in GGPO before being able to compete with the really good players in there. BODIED AS F-CK.
OMG god this is soooo stupid. OK if you other people cant see the DLC color palettes and its just for your own enjoyment then why not create a palette swap like they did in CvS2. OMG its not that hard to install into a bit game. cash wh0res
I just checked the SF3 guide here. I beat arcade with Necro and checked the 2nd Impact colors they are identical to the ones you could choose by pressing start and an attack button on the PS2. I would like it if I could access both at once but oh well.
Regardless, it looks like these colors are going to all new from the ones already available.(Default and Unlocked)
How about some stage map packs from the first two Streetfighter 3 games? Now THAT would be worth buying. Also I'm down for a balance pack that fixes known character balance issues(of course even when bought you have the option to switch back to arcade perfect :p)
Just give me Color Edit mode and dont say they can't do because they can't do it because they could just have one customisable color like CVS2
