Updated: Links to more reviews have been added into this story. There are a lot of combos here that require really tricky timing, calling for you to pause for a half second in between hits, then rapidly string together two or three attacks, pause for a fifth of a second, follow up with another hit, and so on. In short, the game's combo system is almost polyrhythmic in nature, making it quite frustrating to those who just want to jump in and quickly put together a bunch of attacks in unblockable succession.
This Online Edition of the game allows the impatient among us to change all that. Thanks to the full Dip Switch mode (unlocked by beating the game with all characters, or via paid DLC for $0.99), you can now activate all new gameplay systems, including ground-chain combos and air-chain combos. This essentially makes the game playable in an entirely new way, which, in time, may even require a whole new set of tiering specific to this mode. It will be amazing if Twelve (the worst 3rd Strike character in the game for competitive play) actually becomes a tourney-ready character thanks to those wacky new dip-switch options.
I wonder if you can use the molested dipswitch settings online...
Possibly the WORST review I have ever read for a fighting game. These people know and understand sh*t all.
@4
yea Sean Q and Hugo were all lower then Twelve in the last tier-list so i dont know what theyre on lol
its coming tomorrow guys. i cant wait for all the hatemail when people realize that you cant mash out like crazy, or throw random SAs lol. good luck newcomers. if you dont have passion for this game, you'll hate it...take it from me.
@10
dude with Twelve its kinda easy lol. just X.C.O.P.Y and show Gill how much of a bitch he is. to me the hardest one was Remy and Sean.
@#4
You have to keep in mind that 12, from a non tier based view, is arguably the worst character in the game... especially towards beginners and low to mid level players. very strange normals, low damage, wack supers, below average health... now mix that with someone that isnt good hes the worst.
Atleast sean have 3 usable supers, decent health, solid damage, good normals like other shotos.. So he tends to not be the worst character for low to average level of players. Sean is capable to doing a good 40% damage off c.mk xx sa2, 12 cant even cancel his crouch normals into much. And we all know anyone bothering with street fighter games like to hit c.mk into special/super moves for anyone with that option lol.
wow that seems like a pretty unbiased review........ o_O :p
i am definetly curious about that dip switch mode though! lets get to 23rd asap
@#11
depends on which list you are looking at, Hugo been bumped to B+ last i checked and Q,12 are C, and sean is D.
Oh and people mash out supers all the times in 3s, if they can manage to mash on ggpo, they can mash more in a better online environment. You will see alot of wakeup super arts trust me, 3s isnt immune to that.
@people asking about dip switches, they basically alter some of the game mechanics. Such as infinite meter, recovering health or something... depends on what kinda options they have. Could be the system direction from the consoles which can further change the juggle mechanics of the game or everyone having magic series chain combos, or having access to all 3 super arts at once.
@#10
if you are talking npc gill, you can ex XNDL or sa2 his resurrection. and twelve can walk under his projectiles so you dont have to parry or block them.
I'm sure they had something similar to the dipswitch on the Dreamcast version.
@ 23
most unbalanced ever? over MvC2? even with the parry system? The uphill battle to beat Chun li isn't all that bad compared to games where characters are banned. If it was truly broken she would of been banned from tournaments. Like for instance, Petshop in the JoJo's game.
Granted I want to see link to the quote too because I would love to get even more support that its decently balanced compared to other 90's games (from what I could tell)
I think its fine if people hate 3rd strike. but hate it for the right reasons, you hate the roster (I love them) and you hate the gameplay, that's a valid reason folks. But please don't not give the game the time of day, ignore match ups and unique characters simply because of a tier list somewhere on the internet.
@25 I actually did the leg work and found those quotes. Justin said on his blog that he thinks 3S is the most balanced because of how many characters are used. If you look at the tournament results at EVO, it's almost a perfect contradiction to that statement.
Valle says that 3S might be the next ST and compares Yun and Chun-Li to Dhalsim and Balrog. David Sirlin rebalanced ST, has a deep knowledge of character balance in the original game, is basically a professional game balancer, and says that 3S is the most unbalanced fighting game he knows.
Valle and Wong know how to play the game, but they're clearly not experts on balance.
@26 I would agree that it's not smart to dismiss a game because it's not well balanced, but a game with two or three viable tournament characters just is not a very exciting competitive game, imo. Maybe the game is incredible for casual play, but who wants to play in a tournament with 5 Chuns in top 8 (literally the case in EVO 2008)?
#27, lol those guys are playing fighting games none stop for over 10 years, of course they know more about balancing and fighting games in it self than us ...
They probably take the word balance differently. We just look at tiers and see Chun/Ken/Yun w/e clearly sticking out on top. But maybe they mean due to Parries and the games system any character could be made viable? Idk but they know what they are saying.
#28 What about MK9 though? Ive never followed a competitive fighting game that had EIGHT different characters in the top EIGHT (Or Seven) @ the biggest fighting game tournament ever (Props to MK9 for that btw, super entertaining).
Would people say MK9 is balanced? I think prob. cause there are so many cheap characters there is a lot to choose from lol, instead of just 3. Its fun to watch, but idk If I'd like playing that over like SF4 where we only see Yuns/Yangs/Fei's now too. IDk.
@28. You have a point for sure, and that's partially the game showing its extreme age and the player bases fault. There are many top level players capable of winning with low tier characters all over the world. Not every top player goes to EVO, I don't think EVO results is the end all be all to how balanced a roster is. But when a game has been around for over a decade, it doesn't make sense to enter a tournament with the best characters. Knowledge of the top tier has been around so long it mostly makes sense to pick the top tier if you want a consistent win. It doesn't mean low tier can never win, or that its all 8-2 match ups. 3rd strike is a deeper balanced roster then EVO results give it credit.
Again I will admit, EVO 3rd Strike is kind of lame because of the Tier Whores, but that doesn't mean the game is broken to heck.
Ryu's feet are too large? That's the weirdest reason to not play 3S I've ever heard...
"Part of what keeps 3rd Strike so balanced is that every character comes equipped with a versatile set of tools, making everyone potentially dangerous."
Someone got PAID to write that. *shakes head*
Wait wait. Dip Switch mode? That's news! Have they mentioned this? Cause I haven't heard squat about that!
Dunno if it'll change the game entirely but... it seems refreshing!
