Niitsuma has revealed in a short piece with Kotaku that the inclusion of Dr. Strange was caused by the question of how the villains from Strange's respective universe could appear in the game without Strange himself making it in.When Capcom got the approval to include Dr. Strange in the fighter, that OK came with a surprising amount of hand-holding from the comic maker, [Niitsuma] said.
"With Dr. Strange, Marvel had some very special requests," he said. "They wanted him to do this this and this. It was very specific what they wanted him to do."
Niitsuma said that Marvel has never been that specific in the past.
"Dr. Strange had the most specific requests they ever made," he said. "It was just unreal; what moves he had; what sort of hand gestures. Very specific."
He said the comic publisher even sent along illustrations showing exact hand positions for Dr. Strange to use in the game.
"There were some bits and pieces we couldn't do," Niitsuma said. "There were some moves we had to counter-offer something else, and satisfy their needs for specific things in different ways."
Tip from AlexMLynch.
This does not come as a surprise since marvel is working on a new title of the Defenders, its gonna feature Dr. Strange
http://moviecarpet.com/iwave/images/7...
This is supposed to be the return of doctor strange because as far as i can recall he is no longer sorcerer supreme, I also recall a draft of the movie scrip already been turned in to Marvel Studios
@7
I agree. Dr. Octopus or Sandman should have been in the game.
@8
I forgot that Iron Fist is also part of The Defenders
http://nerdiest-kids.com/wp-content/u...
So also that is the reason for Iron Fist
@12
Exactly this. Dr.Strange is a very unique character, complete with specific hand gestures and spells, and because he's never been implemented in a fighting game before, they needed to make one of their most unique characters close to perfect for UMvC3.
I can understand the attention to detail. With Wolverine or Hulk, you can just have them swing or jump any which way and they'll still be identifiable. With Strange, there's a lot of meticulous movement when he starts casting spells and there are certain symbols associated with them.
Even though I don't think fanboys would've complained if Capcom got one or two things wrong, I love the attention to detail they're paying. Shows that Marvel gives a damn about the game.
@2
I would rather have Marvel dictate who gets in than Capcom. Marvel's side is much more diverse and fun. Meanwhile, Capcom had a HUGE library of games at their disposal and they chose:
-4 Resident Evil characters (including a botched Jill)
-4 Street Fighters (3 of which are the most boring and played out characters in the series)
-3 Darkstalkers (They chose least colorful characters in the entire series, just because they have boobs)
-Trish (Why!? She's a nobody. She's not even popular within her own series)
-Zero (Why instead of Megaman? I'm no Megaman fanboy... but seriously)
I'm sure that comment gets on a lot of people's nerves, but considering how many games they ignored, the Capcom side seriously disappointed me. The Marvel side made the right choices though.
Lei-Lei is pretty colorful if you ask me. She's actually my favorite Darkstalker along with Jedah.
@18
Marvel couldn't care less about the fighting game community. They are a business and are advertising to those who would actually spend money on their comics and movies, not to those who just watched a few cartoons in the 90's or played a 11 year old video game. If you ran the largest comic company in the world, you would do the same thing. You would want to push characters that are actually relevant to the current realm of comics and are popular NOW.
They are more in a position to tell you who is popular, since they actually have the data and sales numbers, not some angry fighting game fans on a forum.
@17
It's about creating characters with interesting play styles, and representing games second. Zero got in over Mega Man because he's everything Mega Man is plus one energy sword, Trish and the Darkstalkers got in because they add in new ways to play (Good god, that sounds like an awesome band name right there, Trish and the Darkstalkers). Street Fighter and Resident Evil are both their most popular franchises, so expect to see a lot of reps from them, though if they add more characters after UMvC3, I doubt we'll be seeing more from those two series.
@20: Projectile counter. Completely unique gameplay functionality.
@18: Community is not always right and is not wholly collective. For example, there's a segment that didn't want to see any more additional Street Fighters or X-Men and hey, look at that...
@17: Could go back and forth all day about reasoning for choices, but it's pointless. I agree and disagree with your points, but, in the end, they're not going to please everybody.
I don't think they're pushing who is necessarily popular now, but more like they are promoting new series with a lot of the characters on the Marvel side of the cast. Iron Fist is absolutely awesome, but I doubt he is one of the most popular Marvel characters now. I would have liked to have seen Mr. Negative though.
Agreed, Trish is trash. I'm tired of the same Dark Stalkers too..
Yeah, no one buys them. That's why Marvel is still around and able to tell Capcom what they have to do with their characters. Smart guy you are.
Using Google search for what is obviously going to be the most accurate data ever, I got some data showing that Marvel and DC sold 7.4 million comics combined in 2006. The market is diminishing but it is still there. You can't finance those blockbuster movies without an initial source of revenue.
If you guys haven't noticed, Dr. Strange says "I'm starting an all field of Defenders, what do you say?" to Chun Li before the fight. So having Marvel's influence in on Dr. Strange's specifics and the inclusion of Iron Fist is totally understandable for advertising and marketing purposes. Oh and to those who would like to see more of Dr. Strange's moves besides the comics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWoPxB...
"All female" not "All field". Shuma needs to get some buffs if his nemesis is going to be in the game.
7.4 million is what One Piece sells ALONE! lol... Congratulations Marvel and DC...
Anyway, I'd like a more heterogeneous roost, that's why I agreed with the Phoenix Wright inclusion, and that's why I hated the "Avengers" versus "Resident Evil" that's coming out. Hell, from about 8 memorable characters, RE put 4 in the game!
Whatever, if I buy this game it's just to object the world, so I'm ok. ^_^
@#28 No you don't. That's why you'll stay ignorant.
It should be news that Super Skrull doesn't say HE LOVES YOU anymore before his INFERRNOOOO!!
I read comics more then I play fighting games (hell right now I'm reading the boys which was originally published by a marvel imprint but was deemed too on the mark with some of their parody, namely a group of gifted youngsters who are all taken by an older man and have 500 different teams) and I like that they're doing these characters.
Strange needs the detail, because the deveil is in the details and Strange might summon one if he makes the wrong hand gesture.
Iron fist is a beast released from the streets, being the Iron fist grants him almost power beyond that of Ryu and would be fun to see how they play with that against the street fighter's universe of understanding fighting methods.
Rocket is an Old G of space defense and is a great heavy weapons guy.
Nova's a straight up monster in terms of power and moveset
Hawkeye, the name implies all but his arsenal or arrows would have most people stupefied.
And Ghost Riders the F***ing ghost rider
Wow way to prove my point lol. Marvel and DC combined sell 7.4 million copies at 3 dollars a comic that' what? 22.2 Million dollars? So every Marvel movies by itself grosses over 100 Million minimum. So Marvel makes 11.1 million a year on crappy comics and Several hundered more million on movies, cartoons, and merchandise.
It's a joke. No one buys comics. What kind of industry draws "$257.88 million" a year combined? That's whay freakin Capcom makes in a quarter by itself.
If strange ends up broken then we can't blame Capcom.
Actually smart guy, comic sales were about 700 million dollars. Yeah, that's real chump change.
Loving that they finally included Dr. Strange like I always wanted and hope Marvel keeps out those characters that I don't think would fit anymore (looking at the current Venom and Anti-Venom).
@39
That "$257.88" figure you read on that page was "Dollar Sales for Diamond's Top 300 Comic Books from EACH MONTH". Not year, month. And I don't think that was the figure to focus on.
@38
What I don't understand is that you call their comics crappy, yet you are probably one of the people pissed that your favorite comic characters aren't in the game. All those cartoons, movies, and merchandise were only successful because of the comics, so you are acting like a fool.
You also don't realize that a lot of reading had gone digital with Marvel's digital comic service.
Furth, if you look at the numbers (I think that previous poster was wrong), you will see that they are still huge for paper comics. In July alone, there were 5.89 MILLION comics sold (the top comic for the month selling 135,000 copies at $4.00 a pop), which Marvels owns a huge chunk of (http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomic...). These numbers are only for North America and don't even include worldwide sales.
WOW! I didnt know marvel were such Pre-madonnas. i wish they didn't give capcom the only characters that would boost their sales. then again its a business so they can do whatever, how ever they like(Capcom does it too).
sigh, i pray for the day when fighting games will be strictly for the fans. -___-
@46
You act as if Marvel fans are disappointed with the Marvel roster.
As a Marvel fan, I am excited about the roster and additions like Rocket Raccoon, Dr. Strange, Nova, and Hawkeye really cemented my pre-order.
This game is not for fighting game fans only, it is for Marvel and Capcom fans, which may or may not match what fighting game fans want. More people buy these games than hardcore fighting fans.
MORE marvel movies lol, who cares they are beat already. All the good ones are done.
I like the hands on that marvel is bringing in. Look how unique dr strange is compared to nemesis. What did capcom do to wolverine... giving him a move called swiss cheese. Wtf he never did a move like that or call it swiss cheese. Marvel should be more hands on with there side of the roster.
The fact is this is what marvel learn from all those movies that they allow other company to make of their Characters, and is the whole reason why they went into the movie business in the first place.
They don't want no one screwing up their characters ever again.
Something that Capcom should learn from so we wouldn't have these crappy ass Anime, Movies of Street fighter. Maybe if they step up a little Street fighter 2 might of been good, or even better yet we all know that movie Legend of Chunli.
I'm fine with Marvel making sure their character isn't treated wrong
Everyone is complaining of the diversity on the Capcom side.. but marvel has a much larger pool of characters to choose from. I like both sides of the cast, hell they even put pheonix wright in :) "objection!' People are quick to cry about the resident evil and sf4 cast but fail to see that the marvel side has 7* xmen characters. 2 which are the best in the game (not relevant I know.) Even though the marvel universe it just a whole. ( I would love Capcom to do marvel vs dc.) The Capcom characters are spread out through 12 different franchises which is pretty good if you ask me.
You should'nt be so mad at Marvel or Capcom about this. Remember Marvel did'nt come to Capcom about MvC3, Capcom did. But remember they had to sit and work out a deal. A contract to be exact. It allowed Marvel free reign on what characters make the cut on the Marvel side and how they are designed.
This is natural because they are using a license that is NOT THEIR OWN. if you designed a series of characters and Capcom came to you and said, hey, I want to make a game out of your characters. Im sure you would come up with a deal that protects the integrity of those characters.
I don't think Marvel Fans wanted Dr.Strange fighting and doing things that he normally would not do. Just like Spiderman, Wolverine, Hulk all have their certain looks, so do Dr.Strange, this is the most detail Dr.Strange has gotten in a video game so they wanted to make sure if it's got to be done, it's going to be done right.
I think where they butt heads was the fighting mechanics of Dr. Strange, it probably conflicted with their design idea on making charactes unique and different, this is where we get the contrast that he plays like a balanced Pheonix with some Magneto and such. It was probably a lot of work too.
But look, he made it in the game, he looks really cool lets just move on ok?
IMO Marvel wants characters like dr.strange,rocket racoon,nova in the game to boost their popularity before their upcoming movies. It's got nothing to do with who would be a better fighter in the game or diversity. It's business, nothing about what fans want, that whole dlc poll was just to show they care. Same with Capcom and 2012 resident evil movie check how many resident evil characters are in the game.
Marvel's input is pretty much nothing but logical. As much as people hate it, they don't understand that what they like is mostly stuff that was popular and relevant in the 90's. Marvel is in the moment of right now, and that's why people like Nova and Iron Fist are in the game and guys like Venom and Gambit (the latter of which has become one of the least interesting X-Men characters in the last decade) are not. The details sounds like they just wanted to make sure Strange is doing all the right stuff for his specific magic spells and things like that.
You also have to remember that no game is developed with 100% of a competitive community in mind. This is a fighting game but it's also something they obviously want casuals to buy and people to play simply as fans of Marvel comics.

Strange has been in talks for movies for years and Guardins and Nova movies are relatively new idea, you got to remember the choice to make UMVC3 was probably in late march, months before Thor and Cap which after caps success they fast tracked all of those movies you've been hearing about.
Also the resident evil characters they're adding are mainly from RE5 and Nemesis hasn't appeared in a movie since 2.
So your logic is flawed
BlankaBeast,
that just informs me how ill informed you are on Marvel, there's alot of characters and stories they can do such as the Alias series with Jessica Jones
Zero,
When you consider games go for 50 to 60 dollars and most comics are 3-5(single issues) to 20(trades) to like 40-70(omnibus and absolutes, which come out only once 6 months to a year)dollars and they have to split profits with of course they're gonna make less however they still have profits from licensing(shoes, clothing, video games, tv and movies).
@56
They have been working on a script for the Dr. Strange movie since last year. That is a little more serious than just talk.
Also, they have been hinting at a Guardians of the Galaxy movie since last year and they have even put hints in the Thor movie that they are planning on opening more to Marvel U. In Odin's Vault you can see the Infinity Gauntlet and the Cosmic Cube is certainly Marvel U. Also there have been rumors that enemies from Marvel U may be showing up in the Avengers movie (like the Skrulls & Kree). Not to mention, Guardians of the Galaxy are scheduled to show up in the more recent Avengers cartoon in season 2. In other words, Marvel has had plans for the Guardians for a while now, so it is no surprise Nova and Rocket are in UMvC3 as cross promotion.
Further, this is just a guess, but I don't know, but the Resident Evil game coming out this year takes place in Raccoon City, I think around the time of Resident Evil 2 & 3, so Nemesis may, and probably will, show up there.
I'm liking the Marvel roster for it's diversity, and the fact that we don't have 2/3rds of the Marvel roster populated with X-men. However, given the argument that Strange's villains are in but not Strange himself, one does have to wonder where some of the other characters counterparts are? I was almost certain one of the characters announced would be Loki because of the Avengers film. Black Widow would've even been nice so it wouldn't be such a sausage fest.
Dormammu and Shuma aren't only enemies of Dominican Republic Strange, they are cross series characters.
I'm going to make a team with Dr. Strange, Dr. Doom and Spider-Man.
Just for the detail in all their hand motions and finger pointing.
I don't think it's a matter of who's better or not, but rather that Mega Man (icon) is a staple of Capcoms early successes, without him Capcom would'nt have came this far. In the second decade, Street Fighter took over, then the Resident Evil Series.
Even if Zero is asthetically better than Mega Man X, Having an all stars game without one of its biggest stars of them all is kind of like throwing their fans under a bus.
It's like if they made a Street Fighter without Ryu, you could say Ken is better but would it really feel right if they did'nt have Ryu?
@64 While I'd prefer MMX over actual Mega Man, whos to say he should have the same moves and such. People did'nt like Mega Mans moves, they liked the character, im sure Capcom could overhaul his fighting style to make it better. Still, Niitsuma said MMX would have a better chance than ol'Mega Man so you might as well put that thought away.
@RedWaltz79
Scripts get made all the time, if it's ACCEPTED and starts shooting is the big deal, it's still only talk. There were a good 20 scripts for the Batman after Batman and Robin ranging from a Batman where Alfred was Black Mechnic to a batman beyond live action film to a direct sequel to batman. But the one that did end up happening was a Batman Reboot by Chris Nolan.
Just to give you another MARVEL example Ant-man has been talked about since 2006 and has mutliple scripts written but NO okays. Basically this might not happen just like Dr. Strange might not get green lit for an actual film.
Also your logic is flawed when it comes to guardians, just because it shows the Infinity Gauntlet and the Cosmic cube doesn't mean it's hinting directly at the guardians as neither item is directly related to the 2008 or the original team(hell it's only appeared in one issue of guardian series). Nova, isn't apart of the guardians nor dose he have direct relations to the Infinity Gauntlet or the Cosmic cube. Also DivX's point was that they're hyping them up for the movies not just cross promotion, of other products.
Also the new Resident Evil isn't being made by Capcom so Nemesis' appearance isn't assured.
