Don't know who the heck Rocket Raccoon is? Have no idea about his abilities, powers or origins? Well, you're not alone and SumoSlamMan has stepped in to put the community in the know about this little critter.Until recently, say 3-4 years ago, Rocket hadn’t been in much of anything since the 80′s when Mike Mignola (of Hellboy fame) was pencilling the critter in his 4 issue mini. Now he’s a central member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a playable character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Not too shabby Mr. Raccoon.
For those of you uninitiated in Marvel cosmic lore Rocket was originally a glorified orderly on Halfworld, a planet that functioned as an insane asylum in the Keystone Quadrant. Rocket, along with his first mate Wal Rus, took care of the “Loonies” on the fertile side of the planet while the robots who’d originally served as the patient’s wardens built the inmate’s toys on the other half.

Character design and character move-sets are totally different things. Any character can have a great move-set but that doesn't mean people will like the character itself. Therefore, Rocket Raccoon is a waste of slot because fan favorites like Gambit, Cable, Punisher, B Panther, Ms Marvel, Cyclops could have been in t he game.

I'd think having a great moveset can make up for a less than desirable character design.
When Devil May Cry came out, I was like "Oh, another anime-inspired hack-and-slash with some silver-haired, sword-wielding, androgynous male protagonist. Yawn." Then I played the game, and saw what he could do, which in turn made me like the character.
I think this holds true, even more so, in fighting games. I'd much rather have a compelling playstyle on a less than compelling character, than the other way around.
And I'm all for using less well-known characters in the game. Gives more opportunity for gameplay variety, I think. It's so easy to just use characters that everyone knows and everyone knows what they're capable of.

@38 No, they use her because she's a fun and interesting character to play. Viability comes into things, of course, but still, people bashed the hell out of her, saying she'd be a clone of Hulk. In other words, people make very stupid assumptions on things they don't know about or understand.
And what of Shuma-Gorath? Literally NOBODY knows who he is other than from these games, but he's a fun and interesting character, and that's why I use him. If they just put in characters that everyone knew, then the game would be predictable, bland, and uninteresting.

As someone who has read the majority of recent comic books that he has been in, I can say with KNOWLEDGE that he is a cool and funny character.
It's amazing how people forget that Marvel is a comic book company and prints comic books and that they have tons of characters that are awesome but are not in cartoons or movies.

Nova and Iron Fist are both great characters. Nova is insanely powerful in Marvel U and Iron Fist can do a lot of cool martial arts/mystic related stuff.
I think you give good advice though, people shouldn't make snap judgments because they are ignorant of something. Someone knowing or not knowing someone does not make it automatically cool or uncool.

Just because Taskmaster can shoot arrows, doesn't make him the same as someone who can cause state changes, debuffs, etc. with tons of different kinds of arrows. Also is it too much to ask that in the sequel to the game you like that your character that you played can return? I don't see Tekken Tag 2 missing any characters from Tekken 5, or Tekken 6, or Tekken 4. I don't see any of the new BlazBlues losing any characters between games but Capcom thinks otherwise. They think people don't care about playing a newer vesion of an old favorite. Why would you want to do that when you can play as Rocket Racoon?! I mean he's NEW! Come on guys give him a shot! I know it's called MVC3 and Cable, Psylock, and Cyclops were some of the most used and popular characters from that game but I mean it's a new game! So play our new character instead! People who actually read comics are attracted to anything Marvel, so of course seeing a game called "Marvel vs. Capcom 3" would attract them. Also seeing relevant character in the game, as opposed to characters who are no longer important, makes it even more attractive.
You make it sound as if no one reads comics except a few guys in comic book shops. Marvel is the #1 comic book seller in the world for a reason, and it isn't because of some cartoons from the 90's or even their movies.
BTW - all the guys on Marvel's side that are being added have been in a movie or have a project in the works... that includes Rocket Raccoon and Dr. Strange, so obviously Marvel thinks they are important and popular enough or else they wouldn't be making movies about them.

Pretty sure neither storm nor mag have an anti air like Ironman nor have the same combos nor the same supers....small differences my ASS. nor dose Iron man or mag have a a special attack that launches the enemy upward from across the screen or a super that his everywhere on screen at once. and I'm pretty damn sure neither Ironman or storm, have a grab that holds you in place or a special move that brings you toward them or a super that is a wave effect that slowly goes across the screen, also I'm pretty sure their beams all act and hit differently

Listening to someone like Skisonic talk on the OG gamers podcast really opene my eyes. Fighting gamers are obsessed. Like they have a problem. They don't care about whether they are being ripped off or if the game is crap (Like MVC3 was) they are going to buy it because it's the next fighting game. It's even worse in this day and age when you can't go down to the arcade and test out of the game for a couple of dollars and be like "Nah this game is ass it's not for me" Can't do that anymore. I don't remember hearing about many people actually reading those and I follow marvel and general comic news pretty closely, Gambits' story is forgetttable and in fact can be removed without any damage to the main plot and replaced with a similar character.
Cyclops isn't that popular of a character you got to remember while Cylops and Cable did have big parts in it, both could have been replaced by Xaiver or Beast(even storm) and Bishop respectively. the thing is scott's action in and around Utopia were more character buliding moments and overall good compared to his actions in any of the messiah series.
Also it's not your place to say who's popular or relevant because Marvel already picked who they picked because they felt like those would be needed more then 10 x-men characters(X,James,Erik,Ororo,Sent,Wade,Cable,Remy,psylocke,Scott,Jean) in one game.
Anyway I haven't heard about much Uncanny X-force stuff being relevant since Deadpool and Psylocke joined,the closest I've heard about X-force is Logan mentioning the team, not any one memeber, it in the first issue of Schism.
basically just because the characters are there doesn't mean they're popular or relevant, it's Marvel choice, the people who get their monthly numbers on sales and merchandising and see what's selling and what's not.

I agree with Gambit part being minor. But he is still there. I wasnt arguing if they were popular, I was saying they were relevant. Also Beast isnt the leader scott is, and storm/ X is more pacifist than scott (i,e wouldnt give xforce the green for lethal force) which is a area I think they wanted to discuss
X force has their own series. 11 or issues so far. Its really good you should give it a read, quickly becoming my favorite. I dont know the numbers on sales, I havent looked it up, but stopping Apocalypse (again and again) is pretty up there in beling relevant in the Marvel Universe. Archangel and Fantomex are also on the team, pretty bad ass team.
I agree on the too many X-men bit though. Still mad sent got in over some of the other choices lol

on the subject of this game I'm a marvel fan first, I'm someone who's been reading since Greg Pak first started writing Hulk, I've gone back and read days of future past, I've read Messiah complex I've read some cosmic marvel especially war of the kings, I'm a fan of cloak and dagger and your comments seem to go after marvel more then anything.
Also your comment attacked the play styles of 3 characters which I defended, you didn't even try to explain how they're same with little differences.
I really don't give a f** about the game I give a f*** about playing my favorite character balance or not, Also your arcade tested and balanced theory falls through alittle if you remember the old days when a game would come out and that's it MVC2 was obviously broken, Tekken 4 I'm pretty sure wasn't balanced as people liked to believe, and I'm damn sure KOF1-11 didn't go through any "arcade tested and balanced" phase, same with MK 1-5, bloody roar series, and the list goes on and on of games that came out in arcade and have obvious flaws and obviously aren't balanced and tested well.
I played Jin,Warmachine and Hulk/Shuma in MVC2 and play Spencer,Hulk and Chris in MVC3, it's about having fun not being competitive. also I go to school and seriously during off time(when I got a free period) play MVC3 with people at school. I play for fun and nothing else, because at the end of the day it's just a game for me annd I'm more of a marvel fan then a capcom fan.

The thing is Apoc hasn't been around for a good 3 4 years and they went to keep it current and fresh and apoc was the final boss of the 90s Xmen game if I remember correctly and not much has changed since his first appearance in the comics just gained a little bit of depth.

Everybody keeps asking for more X-men characters in the game. There is Sent, Storm, Phoenix, Magneto, And Wolv are ALREADY in the game. And if you want you can even count Deadpool. Thats already 5 X-men, 6 if you count deadpool. Thats more then freakin street fighter and CAPCOM is making the game. If they add anymore X-men it will be Capcom Vs. Xmen and friends.

Theyre 4 main in the game ( Cap, Hulk, Thor, Ironman) plus if you start counting "deadpool" as X-men then you open up to many more characters that were at one point in the avengers (Spider-Man, She Hulk, and even Wolverine) And thats not even including villians if you wanna include sent and mags. Shuma Gorath is outer Dimensional being. He has NO gender. Just because something may ACT female doesn't mean that they are. Does it have a penis? Or a Vagina? I don't think so, therefore he cannot be considered a female just because he MIGHT act feminine.

Honestly, I would like more females in the game myself. But I'm not going to rage all over the place because they didn't add them. I do know they have many more "famous" females in the marvel universe annd I understand where you are coming at, but you going around saying "This character is better then that" is wrong and is your opinion. Honestly I was so freakin happy when they annoucned Shuma and Jill. I might be the only person in the world that Like those two characters in the game. So for you to basically say "Shuma shouldn't be in the game" is basically telling me that your character is better then mine.

Ms Marvel is nothing better then X-23 or She Hulk she was created solely to be the female version of Captain Marvel(Mar-vell). Her solo career has been dodgy in terms of actual charater ,Widow again spy, and Spider-woman which one? there's four(5 if you consider May parker II aka spider girl when she grows up)! if you're talking Jessica, her gameplay would be rather unremarkable as beside "venom blast" she's basically gonna be a mix of Jill and the male spider.
The thing is I know misty knight I knwo about god damn black cat's solo career even dazzlers but nothing really screams for more then Iron fist THE FACE OF MARTIAL ARTS in Marvel and Ghost Rider, the face of "horror"/macabre in marvel.

This site is great for getting the news, but I'm seriously about to stop reading the comments. I don't mind reading peoples opinions, but when people make assumptions from pure ignorance I want to throw up.
When I first heard about rocket raccoon I was slighting disappointed because I never heard of him. So, instead of crying about a character I didn't know. I decided to read up on him and download some of his comics via torrets. Now I'm a little more educated and I'm looking forward to seeing capcoms take on him.
Its nice to see some creativity from capcom by taking a risk instead of just taking characters that already have a move set and port them over. Take a look at Dr. Strange, Nemesis, Ghost Rider, Firebrand, or even first time fighters in mvc3 like Dante,Ammy,and Dorm. Just take a step back from yourself, get educated, and let a company work for a change.
Trust me there are many characters I wanted, but Its time to evolve. Besides we may get those characters added a year from now or in dlc. Stop acting like spoilded brats. Call of Duty, Madden and many other games come out every year so why can't fighters do it aswell.

The point is this is a fighting game, a flashy arcade like un-realstic fighting game, Hawkeye is known for making hard, Taskmaster has photographic memory and learn the muscle movements from just watching(aka he doesn't shoot arrows), meaning literally he can take any natural body movements from Spider-man's swing to Cap's Shield charge and PERFECTLY reproduce it. Ryu's trained in a fighting style that is meant to kill and only uses it for the trill of battle and further understanding of himself, with it he can make magical balls of energy shoot out of his hands, levitate off the ground as he spins around and kicks and do an upper cut that launches him at least 10-15 feet in the air. same with akuma. Ironfist is trained in martial arts to the point he can make his body like Iron using his Chi/Ki and break objects from bones to metal doors with one punch, a lot different from Widow who's only is to subdue or kill a target using her body which has been trained to normal human limits. it's not just about being punchy it's about how punch.
Also I dont' care what movie she's in, to me Avengers is the movie I want to see fail.

Wasp is unfit for battle, she's literally useless in a fight her tasers are meant only to shoot decent sized bolts of bio eletric energy, that never have said to have the ability to kill, she's smart(she was able to figure out that Vision had some of Wonderman's brainwaves in him so he went after scarlet witch because of that), but that won't help when facing down someone like the Hulk or She hulk who again are the physically strongest people on the planet Earth. I could see her making the cut but to me it'd be weird especially since she's not exactly known to take a punch(joke not intentional).

actually I dont' suppoirt ask nor MODOK but I see their importance more then having a chick their for some sense of gender equality, and I love Shuma have since I first heard his name in Robert E howard's books. I just know it's already to late to change the game but you're complaining about it like you can thing is you want to bring these things up to Marvel directly protest to them but talking about how this character and that character should be in isn't gonna change anyone's mind, also you're forgetting popularity and sales drive them if it's a popular enough character on it's own right, rather then something the writers wrote in (Black Widow in Ironman and Avengers instead of Carol Danvers, Maria Hill or Kate Waynsebro). none of the characters you have offered really have held up on a solo career
After reading most of these comments I'll say my two cents and then move on. Here goes...
I think the people who want mvc2 characters that aren't in u/mvc3 aren't anticipating those characters being rebalanced or adjusted. If for example Cable somehow got into umvc3 he's probably not going to play like the Cable 'we' know from mvc2. (Man, can you imagine if mvc2 got a rebalance before mvc3 even existed? Probably be seeing way different comments about characters, lol). If you did bring an exact replica of mvc2 Cable to umvc3 he'd probably get his butt kicked by all these crazy characters in umvc3 anyway; his zoning techniques I don't think would stand a chance since a lot of characters can fly, teleport, etc.
Bringing in unseen characters means that unique move sets can be created from scratch that fit the game. Based on the characters from previous games that are in umvc3 their move sets are quite similar; just some have different properties or a new move was given. If vs. characters got completely new move sets I think some people would shy away from them because they'd be thinking "that's not the character I remember from (insert game)." Just ask yourself, can (character you want from mvc2)'s move set stand up against characters in umvc3?
For X-men characters, to be honest, there's enough of them on the marvel side. I remember in mvc2 a good chunk of the cast was Street Fighter and that annoyed me. More marvel females would be nice but I don't know how good they could be or how much of their potential would be seen in their move sets for this game. The last thing we need is a female marvel character in the game and after people trying said female saying that they suck or waste of a slot >.>
For Rocket, give him a chance just like any 'new' character in a game. Rocket could have a tiny hitbox which would be a nice advantage. There's not much to say about him until we see gameplay footage of him in action. In the end, you're just finding characters that fit your playing style and enjoying yourself. Almost reminds me of smash melee when I didn't know who the heck Marth was. (sry for the ssbm comment but it works for this)
Megaman X I think would be a waste of a slot because I don't see a really good move set for him in the game. We know he can copy moves but have you really seen that implemented in a vs. game? Closest I've seen if I remember correctly is Rogue in X-men vs. Street Fighter.
Everyone has different reasons for playing fighting games. Tournaments, fun, being a fan of the game, the characters, etc. No matter what for umvc3 the game will get its sales. If people don't want to buy the game, so be it. The world isn't going to stop because you are not buying this game or etc. So when November comes around, if you want to buy the game, buy it. If you don't want to buy the game, then don't; life goes on either way.
It's hard to get excited for a Marvel character you hardly knew but im gonna reserve judgment. When they brought out Taskmaster I was kind of like.....he's kind of cool. Now he's my main. Im sure R.R. will be the same. It's hard to really hate on this character until you see his game play. After all thats what really matters anyways. They can always put more characters in. As long as Capcom stops trolling, when they do. Then I don't care if they put Stan Lee in. just tell Marvel to stop being stingy.

People who actually read marvel on a regular basis would know, Task as he's been around since 1980, and recently had a mini series along with an issue between him and a member of Avengers Academy who's possibly his daughter.
MODOK is the leader of A.I.M. and has done alot through out the marvel universe including a few fights with your girl Ms Marvel.
Shuma is one of the great magical beings Dr. Strange and Brother Voodoo call on or find artifacts from, Rocket has been around nearly as long as Ms Marvel as the clip says about he's become the face of Cosmic Marvel, Nova is another big name in cosmic marvel, Iron fist has had mutliple series and is a very popular character with the marvel fan base/Dormammu is THE magical villain of Marvel U, he's Dr.Strange's big bad and is mentioned through out any series that has a magical based hero who knows the magical realm. and if that was sentinels I want you to ask any X-men fan what the beginning of X-3 was suppose to be a reference to and every real knowledgable one will say this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_of_... a story line when sents took OVER THE WORLD and is considered a great saga for X-men.

YES, Rocket Raccoon is so badass, it's ridiculous. I love the guy. He is my new point character for sure, he is going to be insane, especially the way zoning characters are going to be way more viable. I do agree with the more addition of female for the Marvel (and out of personal Capcom favorites Sonson and Tessa (Red Earth) But Marvel pretty much pulled this out with MvC2 where there were only 5 Marvel female in that game and all five of them from the X-Men series.

1) Tekken Tag 2 is missing Kunimitsu from Tekken Tag. (me = sad face)
2) You ignore in your example also, that Tekken 4 cut the roster down to twenty(?) characters from Tekken 3's 30-something. Tekken 3 actually killed a character before the story started (Jun), and had a few straight-up go missing (Kazuya and Bruce come to mind). they didn't bother to even include a character that had Jun's "style" until T5 (Asuka).
3) Blazblue is only on its second game and the original game only had 12 characters. And while not exactly "cut", Lambda-11 "replaced" Nu from the previous game.
An even better example is the KOF series... The games rotate their roster all the time. Its inevitable when you have hundreds of characters to choose from in a fighting game series that you're going to disappoint someone, and some characters will end up "taking a break" as it were to give way to other characters to expand the playstyles or just bring something different.
...but now, multiply those "hundreds of characters" by the many THOUSANDS of characters Marvel has at their disposal.
Someone popular may very well get the cut to bring in someone more obscure. It happens all the time in the comics themselves, it shouldn't be surprising it happens in the related games, right?
Marvel is lord and master of that realm. It took Capcom ten years to even get the project greenlit - they have very little pull at all in regards to Marvel characters. Hell, they had to pull teeth to get Shuma in as DLC.
I don't think they're going to jerk with it any further than that, lol.
Furthermore, I'm sure they'd like to change up the roster as well, just like all (good) series tend to do.
And as a final note, Rocket Raccoon sounds pretty damn interesting (read: [!!!!] awesome). I'm all for more obscure characters I can fall in love with.
As a comparison, a few of my favorites from MvC2 (Ken, B.B. Hood, Blackheart, Ruby Heart, Son Son to name a few) didn't make it either. But hey, I'm enjoying Trish, She-Hulk, and a few others as well as the cats who did make it (Tron/Shuma/Sent was one of my main teams in MvC2 anyway so I guess I lucked out there, lol).
At the very least, give it some time. It's not like he's the only character being revealed, there's 40-something other characters if you have such a hatred for raccoons.

I know there's always gonna be hostility when fans don't get what they want... but when it comes to picking characters for the Marvel roster, everybody shouldn't point the finger at Capcom. Marvel gets the final say when it comes to their characters. Keep in my mind that Marvel is a bigger company now then it was when mvc2 was released, so every character that they put in mvc3 most likely has reasoning for their business in the future. I wouldn't think that there's much negotiating with Marvel when it comes to what characters to but in the game.
So what I am pretty much saying is; don't blame Capcom for characters on the Marvel roster that you didn't want in the game, blame Marvel.

The difference why Rocket Racoon is in
Rocket Racoon is a vetern of the war of the kings, if you don't know what that is you don't know cosmic marvel, and you wouldn't understand why he was picked over any of those girls. But allow me to explain what that means.
War of the Kings was the biggest cosmic event in marvel in a good long while, it had the inhumans, Kree, Shi'ar and Empror Vulcan invovled, names that you should know as an sort of a marvel namely that all of those forces clashing could cause the end of the universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy(The group Rocket Racoon is apart of is and is the leader in more then a few cases) mounted squads to stopping the war and then DEFEATING THANOS, which unlike the video games he's been, is a considerably difficult feat in the comics which most of the avengers have died attempting in the original infinity gauntlet series. And just to name a few ways they go out: "She-Hulk and Namor dissolved; Dr. Doom incinerated; Wolverine reduced to a quivering blob of agony-wracked flesh; the Scarlet Witch destroyed, Cyclops suffocated; the Vision's heart ripped out; Cloak ripped apart from the inside; Drax the Destroyer and Firelord eaten by dinosaurs; Iron Man decapitated; Spider-Man blugeoned to death with a rock; Thor, God of Thunder, turned to glass and shattered"
The difference is you let the fact they're women blind yo to the fact they haven't done much compared to some of these other people within the marvel universe. Any marvel fan worth their weight would never called Iron Fist an Unknown, any Marvel fan worth their weight would never think Modok and Dormammu are no bodies.
I for one didnt want to see Ms Marvel in this game cause i hate her but much would of rather seen her than some stupid ass talking Raccoon.

It's good for marvel since more people to will know Rocket Raccoon i love this hero. But him in UMVC3 is kinda risky, but i had doubts on one of my favorite Superheros Which is Dr.Strange but watching Nemesis And Dr.Strange in action it looks like Marvel is doing the best they can. Hell we seen the cast learning some moves that the old MVC2 characters had. So im think Raccoon might play a bit like B.B. Hood With Elements Of Cable And maybe a bit of war machine in between since he revolves heavily on huge projectile weapons

Let's pretend for a moment that there's no animosity here and that I have no prior knowledge of any of your suggested characters. If you were on the design team for UMvC3 and you were given the chance to make movesets for Psylocke/Ms. Marvel, what would their main theme be and how would they play?

1) You don't speak for gamers, you speak only for yourself you selfish a-hole.
2) Gambit hasn't been cool or relevant since the 90s and you already have 6 X-Men reps as is.
3) That's always been the point of the franchise. Marvel wants to honor both their well known members and show awareness to the obscure. Would you rather they just have 90% X-Men and Street Fighter characters like in MvC2? Oh wait that's a stupid question.
