Note, the video below only contains one match from Amiyu, against a Guile player, and it should jump right to it at the 5:07 mark.
Videos from: Ov3rheadGreg, SMOAI2010 and Esaka Navel.
You'd think Yun and Yang's teacher would be pretty damn powerful.
You'd also think one of CAPCOM's mascots would be able to win, but that's the power of AE: It keeps you guessing. You never know WHO'S gonna be on top! Unless they were in 3rd Strike, then they're guaranteed a spot.
He deserves nothing BUT buffs. He was ass in vanilla, but at least he had a few good things that made him fun to learn and use, and even somewhat viable in tournaments.
I enjoyed watching I think it was Yeb and Jibbo? Using them and just making people go "WOW!". But in Super he was destroyed. I don't understand the logic behind some of the changes Capcom make.
They nerf already terrible characters and buff those that are already good. Yes, they do nerf good characters, but why nerf the bad ones?
I think Gen really needs a little buff on his damage output, considering much of his stuff is not easy to pull off. There has to be some reward for going through that effort and pulling it off flawlessly.
Oh, you saw Gen's dive from the wall hit C. Viper in the second video at 2:00? I know that move is unblockable. I should practice it a lot (but timing is tough) because he is my second major character. =)
Agreed tiers are not everything and it depends on the player, but you cannot rule out the fact that character strength IS an important factor. If you say fighting games are all about mindgames and players, then it goes without saying that you can't really judge players properly if the tools with which they compete (which in this case the characters they use) are not fairly equal- not absolutely even, but fairly equal.
There is a reason very very few people pick hakan/gen/dan in tourneys - because they are not that viable-- The player has to play twice the mindgames and display much much more skill and judgement over his competitor to win because at the top end of tourney level there is not thaat much of a gap in skill between different players.
#7 he wasn't ass in Vanilla. he was perfect in vanilla. But not "Alpha" perfect like they wanted. He's still far from how he was in Alpha.
But as a Gen main (leGENdary kiryu), I'm very excited for the new changes. I don't want Gen to be buffed so he's top tier. I think he's mid-low tier now. But will be able to compete in tournaments now.
I wish he didn't have TC's and had more Chains. His TC1 is useless at the moment. hopefully we can find a purpose for it.
But I guess we'll take what we can get. As long as he's a harder character to learn I'm happy with that.
Awesome gen! I might be one of the few who really prefer super gen over vanilla gen. His new tc in AE is gonna change a lot how I play with him, but I can't wait :)
#11
Did he say anything to negate that?
Anyway, amazing Guile in 3rd video, Gen is pretty good as well, nothing I haven't seen before.
wow! he is so good...
im a Gen player too, right now im at #1 place in N. America Ranking on PS3, but seeing this player Amiyu (and WarriorBySand) makes me feel like i dont deserve that place... makes me feel like a Noob hahaha
Still a LOT to LEARN
i think, Blanka and Guile are bad match ups for Gen
PS3 PSN ID: the_Os_man
effin PSN down i cant play!!! :( (sackboy sad)
Capcom sometimes take some decisions that make me ask their overall intelligence.
Nerfing a characters should be a last solution scenarion when ther is no reason whatsoever to not use that specifically character.
Otherwise they should just buff the weak characters.
Lets take Rose for example. Was it really necessary to nerf her ultra 2? Yes it could kill momentum, but so what? She doesnt have an overhead, her crossup sucks and all she got is a good throw, a good super, reflect against fireballs and some good pokes. That is all. And not only that but they also nerf her super meter gaining. Again, for what?
Now lets talk about the twins, they can fill up a super bar spamming that palm move. Is that fair? Does such clear imbalances makes a good game?
The best iteration of street fighter iv was super. Ae is inbalanced again. And i dont know why because frankly it is not that hard to give all characters some buffs making them all viable to play. They did that with Hakan they could also do that with some others.
That Guile was TIGHT. The Viper player seemed good on technical skills but useless at mind games. Amiyu was able to predict her jump-in from a mile away (he had already Gekiro'd well in advance), and caught her with throws too often which she didn't even seem to ATTEMPT to tech. And he was able to bait her into jumping into Koga far too easily. Maybe Amiyu's put a lot of effort into studying the Viper matchup but predicting her moves shouldn't have been THAT easy.
The Akuma match was boring but DAMN, that match with Guile was impressive.
@ #17: Vanilla was definitely Gen's best SF4 version, no question. But even that version was severely lacking.
And when Super came the top (or at the very least most well-known) Gen players dropped him, and it was sad. Because they put in a ton of work to get Gen up to a competent level, to only have everything nerfed or removed.
Vega was my main in vanilla, so I'm aware of the struggle of having to do twice as much to get only a little in return.
@ #21: Exactly. Capcom keep weakening the weak, when they should just buff them and put them on par with the stronger characters.
I main gen myself. Obviously havent played any AE though. Heres a video or two of me playing.

Been trying to work on not jumping and diving in as much as it leaves me for punish. Any suggestions? Would like to be more like gen in these videos.
@20
Blanka is definitely Gens worst matchups. As for Guile, personally, I feel it depends on the playstyle of the Guile. Zangief however is also a MAJOR pain to fight, and imo the next worst matchup, right up there with Blanka. Also, great Goukens are really tough as well as are Bisons.
@24
Yep.
The only thing that needed nerfing since the first sfiv was sagat damage, that was beyond ridiculous. Only that.
About ae, the twins could keep their ridiculouness if Gen had a target combo and had his meter building back, if rose had her meter building back and u2 usefull, if seth had his jumping dhalsim punch back ( why the hell they took this out??????) and + his health buff, because frankly, he isnt that good to deserve 750 health; Adon his unique wake up timing back ( this unique feature doesnt make him unbalanced).
Well you get my point, no need nerfing underpowered characters; in fact as i said earlier there is no need to nerf anyone if everyone has at least one powerfull tool to use, the only exception to this rule was Sagat in Vanilla that could stake up 600+ damage after a simple uppercut.
@24
Vanilla Gen was able to keep up with the big boys. He wasn't low tier like they listed him. He was mid-tier at best and worse. His poke game was out of this world. Probably as good as Chun's Poke game in super. His EX Oga escape was awesome. some characters could bait it, but Oga had so many versions after he hit the wall it was easy for gen to mix it up. His meter building was perfect. Super was stocked every round. His jump game made it a force to be reckoned vs fireballs. He could jump over them and attack without worrying about getting SRK'd. Unless you were slow. His only down fall was his over head speed.
Super: He received some buffs and nerfs that made him a totally new character to some. If in Vanilla you played a lot of Crane or a mix of both, you were a head of the game. If you played mainly Mantis, than you had to relearn Gen. I myself had to learn to stop jumping so much as it wasn't as free as it was in Vanilla.
His overhead is now faster. And had better recovery I believe allowing for Overhead, frame traps.
He defiantly moved down in the tier list but didn't make him useless, you have to play way more patient than before, and work about 120% harder than you used to have to with a lot of match-ups.
Vanilla Gen was good just he was over shadowed by Sagat heck even Floe the best American Sagat (laughable I know) was defeated by Yeb who put in amazing work but his nerfs in super really butchered him.
@Ferdi yeah that's why AE is so diverse no abundance of Fei or Yun nope not one.
Gen can fight the low to mid tiers just fine if the player is really skilled, but you have to know your options like the back of your hand. Since SF4 is so defensive, his rush down is not always rewarded. You have to make your opponent guess, the difference is the amount of work you put in to kill someone (even in a single match, his output is like worse than Dhalsims or Vega).
He does have good speed and hit confirms though, which allows him to come back in some matches. But....when the game has Yun/Yang/Fei Long/Rufus, Gen has no choice but to be overshadowed.
Can anyone tell me something that Gen does better than all of those characters? =P
Still, he is a rare fighter and that gives him an edge sometimes.
I'll take your word for it cuz I've never played Gen outside of his trials.
What I do believe though is his changes (buffs, nerfs, tweaks etc.), took the fun out of playing him. I used to love seeing Yeb up next cuz his Gen was always fun to watch, because he probably enjoyed playing him. In Super, that fun, that enjoyment, was no longer there.
Maybe his AE changes will be more friendly to him. Maybe we'll see more people doing crazy s**t with him? Who knows?
so does anybody know why they have a megeman legends currency dished out as points not hating or anything just wanted to know if anyone has an idea about the zenny
@ Os (#20)
I main Gen as well, I'm not the best but he's my fav to play. Whats your bp with Gen?
@37 'zenny' is capcom's staple currency, as much as 'gil' is for many square games, or 'rupies' in the zelda series.
I could understand the reasoning behind some of the changes Gen got for SSF4 but I think the biggest complaint that many Gen players had was the meter gain nerf.
Personally I think Gen with meter is dangerous. I'v mained him but not like others. I have a diverse set of characters I use. Gouken, Guy, Gen and makoto. All fun and I think are solid characters. I just wish they could tweak characters where everyone has potential.
@40 not only meter the invincibility removal from his Oga was also a huge nerf since his only means of escape after that was mashing his gekiro out and hoping the opponent pushed a button. part of the problem Gen also suffers a bit from scaling he is similar to Viper in the momentum dept. but does less damage.
Shame he was in the top 20 in AE until the twins continued to top the charts along with Viper, Akuma and Fei.
@35 I would say Gen has better pokes than all those characters. Rufus, Yun and Yang don't really have any great pokes outside of Yun and Yangs TC and Fei has good pokes but can't get much off them unless he has super stocked or counter hits the opponent.
Also, I'm sure Gen beats Rufus lol?
@packz93, dunno, Rufus is one of the strongest in-game. That sounds a bit fishy, lol.
I'm just saying, I don't see any reason to pick up Gen in a tourny vs. those four rush down characters. Gen has a smaller hitbox, but Rufus has 101 ways to hit confirm his ultra so I think in the end Gen would just get killed off once Rufus caught him. Rufus has stamina, awesome damage output, and reliable hit confirms. Gen does not have good stamina or damage.
gotta give this guy credit,no one plays gen anymore since he got nerfed for no reason but this guy might inspire some people
