ComputerAndVideoGames.com is reporting that 3D support for Street Fighter X Tekken and the Namco version of the game is unlikely at this time, as the development teams would have to overcome a a technological hurdle first."However, internally we've done all kinds of research, not necessarily in making a game as such, but taking various games we have and seeing what they would look like in 3D, and we thought that fighting games look quite good.
He added: "but there is still the technological hurdle, as mentioned previously. It's kind of hard to say at this point [if 3D support will be included]."
Ono-san said of his version of the collaboration: "At this point, talking about 3D if you think about the frame-rate, with 3D games it is doubled and because both of our fighting games are of high-grade gaming it is 60 frames per second. Running a 120 fps game is pretty difficult so we're not sure about that."
Chances are then, bar a technological breakthrough, that we're not going to see 3D support in either game.
It's interesting that the development teams think implementing 3D would be such a challenge on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for these upcoming titles, but that the 3DS version of Super Street Fighter 4 will be a "perfect port" and offer 3D as well.
Fighters dont need 3D. Most video games don't for that matter. 3D is nothing more then a fad that comes back briefly then dies for about 10 years once people get sick of it again. The average consumer is already sick of 3D movies and aren't buying tickets or glasses in nearly the frequency they were just a year ago. Dont take my word for it, do the research yourself.
You dont need a lame gimmick to sell SFxT. In fact, id be worried about the quality of the game if the major selling point is "3D". Give me game-play, and leave the fads for the twilight tweens who still buy into that crap.
@ShinZero
The Average consumer didn't have the flood of 3D movies like they did 2 year ago, pretty much the big one of course was Avatar which used 3D in a Subtle but different way that enhanced the experience, which in those terms isn't a gimmick.
however most directors/studios took at as a hint to make every potentially big hit and add 3D and most of them tried the most unsubtle ways where things pop out at you every once in a while. which is the definition of gimmick.
3D isn't a selling point, it's just as TVs gain 3D features it will become more and more enabled why not just add it on there for people who want to have it.
anyway I believe it'd be more avatar 3D then say Clash of the titans 3D in that it will be subtle, it won't be as noticeable when in full effect but when you turn the 3D off you'll notice a difference.
Regarding the 3DS port, for starters, it runs on 400x240 rather than 1280x720. This is a fairly low size even for mobile technology standards, so it seems feasible to me.
OTOH, the current-gen consoles clearly can't handle a game of SFIV quality in 3D. If you look at all the games that are praised for their graphics, few of them run on 60 fps (SFIV does, and it makes a big difference to me), even fewer bother with 1080p, and not a single one does both at the same time. It'll be a while until we see either of these two combined with 3D, let alone the three together.
"The Average consumer didn't have the flood of 3D movies like they did 2 year ago"
Ya, thats kinda my point. 3D is a fad. It comes back for a few years once every generation. This trend started in the 70's.
The only difference is this time around, there are other things people can tie the gimmick to that might sell. Its not even the first time its happened to video games. Virtual reality tried and failed. Vitua Boy from Nintendo was a miserable failure. They even tried to tie it to comic books.
The same thing will happen that always happens. People will say "ooh and ahh!" the first few times. Then the novelty wares off, and people don't want to pay for it anymore... its already started to happen to movies. Like I said, do the research.
3d is just a passing fad. Its kinda like that stop motion crap, after the move/kinect fail nobodies gonna bother with it. The wii? what actually comes out for that thing?
Not to mention HOW THE F@CK AM I SUPPOSE TO DO A QCF MOTION OR A 360 ON A D-PAD? Don't even mention the iPhone's touch controls; Tried it before and I only got dps half the time. It's so sloppy you might as well keep using your controllers and fight sticks.
@13
not for nothin, i think virtual googles should be one of the things that should make a comback. The advancements in screens/graphics would actually do them justice.
@18 woah woah woah, buddy. i was simply telling you that the 3DS has a joystick, whats 'hard for me to understand' about that? and have you used the new joystick? is the new joystick 100% finished? you cant say anything about it because it isnt even a finished product yet. chill out. just wait. im sure that SSF4 for the 3DS will turn out to be a fun handheld port of the original.
Sony and Toshiba are developing glasses-less 3D HDTVs hopefully the first ones are out by the release of SFxT
