Justin Wong (Makoto) and Mike Ross (E. Honda) played in the grand finals at the AfroShoto tournament held a little ways back. Unfortunately, the footage for the rest of these matches aren't available, but this one popped up recently, giving you another taste of Wong's Makoto.

What what what? J Wong really looked like a mind reader in this match. Lets hope i get to play him this weekend at Pax.

Top Tier vs Bottom Tier. Goes to show that character rankings barely matter much in this game

"Unfortunately the footage for Games 2 and 3 is not available. "
-_-

Looking forward to the release of the "AFROSHOTO" OST - sounds great!

wow !

i'd love to see the rest of this. anyone got an upload ?

justin's makoto is getting more and more beastly

Posted by JIHADJOE on September 2, 2010 at 3:20 a.m. #5

JWong really ought to be playing Rose, because he was just psychic in that match.

Posted by DK_DOOM on September 2, 2010 at 3:33 a.m. #6

Wow, that was something interesting to watch. I wish the rest of that match was available to see.

Also, the background music made it just a bit more epic.

Posted by Pablito89 on September 2, 2010 at 3:38 a.m. #7

it looked like mike ross just messed up a lot. what was up with that random grab? but it shows how good both players really are

Posted by Kurdijef on September 2, 2010 at 4:06 a.m. #8

It wasn't a random grab. It's a regular trick to build meter by whiffing it from full-screen. Mike Ross just didn't know/didn't think Makoto would actually have something to catch him with.

Posted by IrPanda on September 2, 2010 at 4:08 a.m. #9

Yea to me it just looked like Ross didnt know the match up that well.

Posted by Hyperbomb69 on September 2, 2010 at 4:22 a.m. #10

I really dont believe that Makoto is bottom tier...

Posted by ThatRandomGamerGuy on September 2, 2010 at 4:38 a.m. #11

Great match! Mike Ross prob doesn't play a lot vs a Makoto so I'm sure he wasn't prepared for Justin to switch it up. Wonder if Gootecks will do a cross counter episode on Mike. Lol!

Posted by JasonLee on September 2, 2010 at 4:38 a.m. #12

Oh, she certainly is.

Posted by ThatRandomGamerGuy on September 2, 2010 at 4:41 a.m. #13

Oh yeah @11: this is why Tier lists mean sh-it. I bet the tier list will dramatically change before EVO2011

Posted by HukGuay on September 2, 2010 at 5:11 a.m. #14

mike ross practically ate every moves thrown at him. Good match but no patience

Posted by Nyoronoru on September 2, 2010 at 5:56 a.m. #15

Mike Ross needed to use more focus attacks at mid range. Probably wasn't used to it, as who uses Focus Attacks with Honda when you've already got good normal attacks for stuffing the opponent?

Posted by Deimlos on September 2, 2010 at 6:18 a.m. #16

I just started taking Makoto seriously recently, myself. She has a lot more potential than originally speculated, and jwong certainly seems to have tapped into it.

Posted by JELIFISH19 on September 2, 2010 at 6:45 a.m. #17

I love how people always say "lack of matchup knowledge" whenever a low-tier character wins. These guys are pro. They know the matchup very well. They know exactly what Makoto is capable of and her weaknesses. That's why Ross destroyed him in the second half of the first round. Justin played the most basic Makoto in the world. He didn't do any mixups or advanced techniques. He just used used her speed and brute force. Now if he was playing a technical Makoto, then you might be able to say it's due to matchup knowledge. But this match was very straightforward. He only went for Karakusa twice and it only landed once. Pros are pros because they have extensive knowledge of the game and they have an immense ability to adapt to any situations. Mike Ross definitely has matchup knowledge.

Most people just don't realize how dangerous a good Makoto is. She's very strong and fast. When gets in, there's no safe way out. She can counter all escape attempts. You can't just sit back and play passively either because she can get in your face. Mike Ross knows that Makoto's weakness is people who play more aggressive than her. That's what Ross was thinking in this match. He was just trying to get her in the position he got her in the first round where she had a very hard time dealing with the pressure.

"..giving you another taste of Wong's Makoto."

Um...no thanks...sounds gross.

Posted by Helios86 on September 2, 2010 at 7:09 a.m. #19

Nice match but that was one piss poor video. Music was annoying as f*ck, the announcer needed to not sound like he was hyped on caffeine, and machinima with it's usual ad spam.... GJ though, to JW.

Posted by Hrm on September 2, 2010 at 7:15 a.m. #20

Wong making Makoto look good. Great stuff.

Posted by Mrb20028 on September 2, 2010 at 7:15 a.m. #21

Tier list my ass. J Wong's Makoto is pretty damn beasty. I don't even bother paying attention to tiers. A character is only as good as the person holding the controller. You can be a pro with any character if you put your mind to it and stay determined.

Posted by x_Who_Is_Alpha on September 2, 2010 at 7:22 a.m. #22

Ross should have probably turtled a bit, the reason its a 7-3 matchup is because of how easily Honda can stop makoto's mixup game with headbutts and some patience.

Posted by cuzzo on September 2, 2010 at 7:24 a.m. #23

haha we'll be seeing more Kotos online soon as did we see Adon after EVO. good game and the music made it epic

Posted by wongba on September 2, 2010 at 7:56 a.m. #24

so who won the series? anyone know?

Posted by Fightingfan69 on September 2, 2010 at 8:02 a.m. #25

The mentioned vids 2 and 3. I would think its the best of 5 in the grand finals. Sounds like Wong won.

Posted by Motopsycho on September 2, 2010 at 8:07 a.m. #26

"giving you another taste of Wong" just sounded awefull. >.<

Posted by Blueberry on September 2, 2010 at 8:14 a.m. #27

Lmao ross played like some random on xbl. well played by justin, even tho i dislike him :b My makoto is better

Posted by Blueberry on September 2, 2010 at 8:16 a.m. #28

Also, ppl Dont make excuses for ross, he played like a random and makoto is beast, period. So f*** all the haters including ross, Because he did say 1nce in an episode of cross counter that makoto is terrible. Up urs u lame!

Posted by WorstGiefEVER on September 2, 2010 at 8:57 a.m. #29

The question is, how well does the opponent know the Makoto matchup.

Posted by Domine on September 2, 2010 at 8:58 a.m. #30

song name?

Posted by Baha on September 2, 2010 at 9:13 a.m. #31

The only problem I've found with playing ssf4 Makoto is she needs flow, and once she loses it (vs a good opponent) it's very hard to get back. I can see her being very brutal and she should be as nasty as her 3s counter part before EVO2k11 with her backdash punishes and fantasic guessing game. Ibuki on the other hand...I feel it's all downhill for her. But hey what do I know?

Posted by RisingStar on September 2, 2010 at 9:41 a.m. #32

for anybody thinking makoto somehow has a chance of winning tournaments right now deserves a facepalm.... please fix her capcom....

Posted by gluemchen on September 2, 2010 at 9:57 a.m. #33

Why do i have the feeling flash metroid seems to know how to handle makoto much more efficiently, than what j.wong shows here. It kind of looked more like good basic gameplay to me.
But nothing that suprises me here. Still good looking match.

Posted by AnsatsukenChamp on September 2, 2010 at 10:16 a.m. #34

Oh sht! J wong surprised me in this match, this goes to prove that u shouldnt look at tier rankings for all ur statistics (cept rose, she sucks just cuz she is rose, and no, i havent gotten my butt kicked by a rose online, i beat them all with my Guy), j wong is seriously better than i thought

Posted by Bushinryuken on September 2, 2010 at 10:33 a.m. #35

This was a good match, can't wait for more of it to pop online :3

Posted by akumous on September 2, 2010 at 10:54 a.m. #36

I wasn't impressed at all. There was another guy on here that did a pretty impressive Makoto.

Posted by stubbs on September 2, 2010 at 11:32 a.m. #37

"But look now, now ppl say playing a pad is harder to master than a stick."

That's because pads are sh!t. Of course playing on an inferior controller is going to be harder.

Posted by samuraix025 on September 2, 2010 at 11:47 a.m. #38

yeah people say tiers mean nothing until they lose to a toon who is a higher tier than thier own. lets get real, tiers don't tell you who should win or who is good, what they really state is based on strats, frame data, and character techniques who is at the disadvantage in any particular match. the problem is the way its explain with the the whole "two players of equal skill..." statement tries to simplify what its really about.

Ross and Wong are both top players, E.honda higher tier than Makoto. but I'm betting ross hasn't played WONG'S makoto , and seeing as how he mains honda he more than likely hasn't dealt with makoto much unless he has a 3rd strike history I am unaware of, while wong is familiar with Ross' honda

so to me it looks like ross was at a disadvantage. atleast for what was shown of the match so far.

Posted by samuraix025 on September 2, 2010 at 11:54 a.m. #39

also the pad vs stick argument is moot. while there are advantages to be had with both, its your efficiency with your weapon of choice that determines how good you will be. I'm sure everyone I've been on Xbox live wasn't a pad player. just like I'm sure everyone I lost to wasn't a stick user

Posted by Raven on September 2, 2010 at 12:12 p.m. #40

Holy snap, Makoto is beast enough to rush down Honda and dizzy him? People are sleeping on this girl, a few buffs and she'll easily be mid-mid tier.

Posted by Jigo on September 2, 2010 at 12:20 p.m. #41

Seeing things like this make me really think about the balance in this game. Seth sad that he wanted the games to be more about skill than anything. V-Ryu (Makoto player) and Skatan (Sakura player) make Sakura and Makoto look better than what is said. Justin just beat the balls out of Mike Ross when Hondsa is pose to be much stronger. Makoto is low tier on "paper" but in the right hands, tiers sort of fade out. Watch Skatan and V-ryu.

Posted by OhYouDontSayThat on September 2, 2010 at 12:24 p.m. #42

wtf is up with this vid? its edited like sh!te and the music is worse than desk's one handed vid....

Posted by R4HU1 on September 2, 2010 at 12:37 p.m. #43

@JELIFISH19 Yeah man I totally agree, I think what happened in this match was Justin got an incredible start but Mike was able to overcome the pressure but I think the mind games were too much and he took all the wrong risks/Justin made all the right guesses. He wasn't playing a very technical Mak, that's for sure, he just got into Mike's head.

Posted by RisingStar on September 2, 2010 at 12:47 p.m. #44

sorry but the mak ass right now, i personally think they should give her old sagat damage and call it a day then things would get interesting with her...

Posted by Rave_Zero on September 2, 2010 at 2:39 p.m. #45

Not a big surprise in a fireball-free match.

Posted by CageBreaker on September 2, 2010 at 3:31 p.m. #46

@10 Why cause Justin was beasting with her? Just like everyone was complaining how overpowered Rufus cause Justin was owning with him?

Posted by RisingStar on September 2, 2010 at 3:33 p.m. #47

the goal is to balance not just hope the low tiers can win and call it a day

Posted by Rvo2099 on September 2, 2010 at 4:54 p.m. #48

Seeing JWong's Makoto is so much fun than watching his Rufus...

Posted by vryu on September 3, 2010 at 12:08 a.m. #49

makoto is mid tier, for sure.

but, i find unfair that you have to be a top execution player to put her mid.
I'd like to see more "normal" players play her...

for example, almost all her BnB combo are just frame:

stLP -> stMP
stMP -> stMP
stHP -> feint -> stMP

even crLP*2 -> crLK -> LP hayate is a just frame link (i think).

kara-karakusa is difficult too, for "normal" players.

she has a terrible defense in comparaison to some characters...so...if doing damage is difficult, i understand why lot of people give up.

normal karakusa should be immune throw, and EX "immune" to attacks (hyper armor does that), just like Abel.

EX oroshi should have total immunity until active frames.

With that, at least, not top-execution players could do better.

my 2 cents.

@#25

Wong won, it was a pretty cool match. Me and some friends stayed to watch Combofiend play Guy then we left after that. And just in case anyone's saying anything about their skill this was at a bar and everyone had a drink or two probably lol

Posted by MrGPhantome on September 3, 2010 at 12:55 p.m. #51

Makoto still has too many glaring weaknesses for Wong to seriously consider her as a possible main. It works for a little when you don't know the match up, but It's clear by the round that Mike one, all you need to do is knock down Makoto once and it is all down hill for her.

Regardless, Wong looked sharp in that match up. Good on him.
