Ono hints at there being 35 characters in Street Fighter X Tekken Fabulos translated an interview Yoshinori Ono had with the French site JeuxVideo.com. Ono was asked specifically about the number of playable characters in the upcoming game and he said that when there are too many fighters, people focus on a handful of the cast and forget the other character's techniques.

He went on to use Super Street Fighter 4 as an example, saying that 35 fighters was a magic number for him, claiming this ended up being a good choice because he could use all of the cast.

Yoshinori added that the Tekken and Street Fighter teams were always friends, so they thought that a crossover was natural step. Also, he feels the Tekken characters will go through a smooth transition when becoming a part of the Street Fighter universe.

Street Fighter X Tekken won't be released until at least 2012, but it seems likely that the production team would hammer out details like the roster size early on, as deciding who the characters would be was one of the first things the SSF4 developers worked out when the game was first being created.

Since many people in the Tekken cast do indeed have that wavedash, I really do not think fireballs mean a thing anymore. Besides, its seems in certain cases, non projectiled characters get more respect for their victories than those with them. But overall the battle will be as equal as possible. I have no personal favorites since I love both franchises equally but please MALDA... Do not be upset if a Tekken character is god tier. I could care less if one is or not. In the end.... Its about how good you as a player is... Not about who has what moves...

Posted by Struggs on September 1, 2010 at 4:16 p.m. #5

^^^^^^^ You are on a SF website talking smack about Tekken? You think there are going to be people here who support Tekken?

Anyway 35 characters is a good number even if this is a 2v2 game. You don't want to throw too many things at new players or it starts getting needlessly complicated and maybe doing like 36 or 34 so it's even on both sides it what's needed. But any more fighters than that, and things start to get out of hand.

Might mean some popular people miss the cut, but the trade off should be worth it.

Posted by Wardog on September 1, 2010 at 4:16 p.m. #6

35 is fair.. i just hope it won't be like SSF4 again with all these Ryu and ken players. also i hope they make both side strong and not just one side. i think they did that with CvS2 game, where the Capcom side was better than SNK side.

Posted by chickenwings on September 1, 2010 at 4:17 p.m. #7

The world warriors are almost a sure bet along with atleast bison as the sf boss character.

And as 35 as the magic number, isnt the arcade adding more? If u want people to use more of the cast take another look at balance. If i can bash my face agaisnt the buttons with ryu and balrog do u really think people will want to put the work in with guy or gen?

@MALDA

That is your opinion... I think you need to take your own advice. It is merely my opinion but compared to you, I am quite level-headed about things. I am just saying the game will be even, and pretty enjoyable if you truly are that loyal to capcom.. regardless who they are up against. You just seem to want to insult others who do not agree 100% with anything you have to say. Granted, I may have done so from time to time and for that I am sorry but I am pretty sure it was for defense from simple minded people like yourself. To be honest. Besides Ken whos comment got deleted and yourself, I have no problem with anyone else here. I am well aware this is a street fighter site but the fact of the matter is that it alone is not streetfighter fan based... There is Marvel as well as Tastsunoko.. And within two years.. It will be Namco as well. So its best to just get use to it now while you can because you just might learn to like them.

sf vs tekken = tekken characters with nerfed moveset(number of moves)

tekken vs sf = sf characters with a crazy amount of additional moves

*Cares about Tekken characters*

I believe that Capcom wouldn't do anything to make this game a one-sided fist fight against Namco.

Look at the gameplay already, and you can see that they gave Kazuya alot of tools to match up against Ryu, which means ALOT in the SF4 engine.

I can expect Tekken characters to have alot of unique abilities that can give Street Fighter characters a big run for their money, and if they include Hwoarang in his original Tekken 3 flavor, dude...I can expect him to be my first day main.

@ChunLi

Makes you wonder if they put in King, will they give him his chain throw ability

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 5:01 p.m. #20

@RA_MO

Probably...they could probably make the moveset as a progressive combo, but limited endings.

Examples:
A -> B -> C
A -> B -> D
A -> C -> D
*They'll show up in the command list and let you know which ones can combo into each other.

I think this'll work best, to prevent 100% K.O. Chain Throws.
(Like so...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eD_knN110o)

Posted by RA_MO on September 1, 2010 at 5:10 p.m. #21

@ChunLi

Or maybe they could do throw escapes like Tekken but just greatly reduce how much damge the entire chain throw does. But whichever way they choose will be great nonetheless

Posted by n00b_saib0t on September 1, 2010 at 5:12 p.m. #22

@RA_MO

if i was making the game i would give him some chain throws that work like a cross between abel's change of direction and chain throws. essentially, when he starts a throw chain he can go into a move that *looks* like a throw but is just part of this chain of moves. on top of that, he will have his regular throws that act as throws and cannot be comboed. but thats just one idea on how to do chain throws, i'm sure there is a better idea out there to make it work in the SF engine.

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 5:17 p.m. #23

@RA_MO

That is always an option. lol
It's always fun to speculate how they can incorporate different playstyles of the Tekken characters, both companies have very unique characters.

Posted by RA_MO on September 1, 2010 at 5:20 p.m. #24

@n00b_saib0t

That is also a nice idea. I mean for the most part, his chain throws can not actually be comboed into well unless you count the air juggle to mid air throw. But whatever they decide to do, he will be unique in the SF world as being the first grappler to have chain throw unless I am missing someone.

Posted by TheOneandOnlyone on September 1, 2010 at 5:23 p.m. #25

i feel the takken cast should be able to combo juggle from one side of the screen to the other while still,keeping balance in mind.That make it more tekken like but something bound to be broke if they do that.

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 5:25 p.m. #26

@ n00b_saib0t

I was actually thinking of Abel when I was thinking of how Chain Throws can work, that seems the most logical, but on top of that, each additional attack's motion can be different.

When it comes to Fei and Abel's attacks, it's as simple as 3 QCF + P, they can make it more "life-like" for King:

QCF+P ->HCB+PP -> 360 Forward+PP (Or backwards depending on how the last one leaves you. :P) but it all is continuing that chain of attacks, but the last one could actually be a real throw, not a command throw.

They could really have fun with this if they had enough imagination.

Posted by Balloon on September 1, 2010 at 5:27 p.m. #27

I think since both Namco and Capcom are releasing their own versions of the game, we'll most likely see just a larger cast than the number 35 implies. For instance, if Lee Chaolan or Elena don't make it in one version, they may have a greater chance of being in the other. Thinking about it further, Elena, while not the most original idea (hot, half naked Capoeirista?), would fit Tekken like a glove.

Of course, from the looks of it, it doesn't look like a crazy amount of collaboration is going on. Plus the staples of both franchises are a given.

Posted by Ex_Ein on September 1, 2010 at 5:37 p.m. #28

@blackhart
ALRIGHT, I'll do something;

Tekken is Tekken Street Fighter is Street Fighter, saying one is better than the other is like comparing a Sniper Rifle to a Machine gun, while the basic thing (they're a fighting game) is the same, they have different advantages(SF:Fireball spacing, Tekken: the Insane combos), and disadvantages(SF:clones and unnecessary nerfs and buffs to characters, Tekken:Not very friendly to newcomers unless being coached) and the fans of each thing are comfortable with.

While Street fighter is the bigger community, it's because it's been on the market for longer, which is a big factor, YEAH I SAID IT DO SOMETHING

Posted by DarkCyclone on September 1, 2010 at 5:49 p.m. #32

Whatever happens the Kings have to have Giant Swing as their Ultra. Since of course Giant Swing is by far the best throw in Tekken. Of course I'm thinking 720+PPP/KKK whatever it's gonna be frikkin great.

Also maybe they'll have 2 different grooves. If you choose the SF groove you can use Focus Attacks, FADC, etc. And if you choose the Tekken groove you can use juggle combos with normals that don't usually juggle for that Tekken feel. Actually that's probably a dumb idea but whatever

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 5:59 p.m. #33

@DarkCyclone

At least you're thinking!

I really like the idea of Grooves, but I don't think it could work with the SF4 engine. It's easier for the earlier games (CVS/CVS2/Capcom Fighting Evolution) to just program different mechanics because it's very easy to just select how you want them to and even further...they were just 2D sprites, not 3D models.

Maybe we could see the day that different grooves can be used simultaneously in a 3D model game soon, who knows?

Posted by RA_MO on September 1, 2010 at 6:04 p.m. #34

Well by the looks of it, it just seems like the game is just an even merge between them both. Since in the video it shows forward roll dive in, a mechanic of Tekken and well maybe they might add some air juggling in the game just not as excessive as Tekkens but just enough to do a little damage. As for street fighter mechanics its pretty obvious of some of the things that are in that it uses. But I guess what most want to know more than anything else, besides the obvious four, who else will make the rost for this game. I guess as time goes on... character by character will be announced

I eagerly await the roster to be announced as well, the waiting game begins...

In the meantime, who do you really want? Do you play Tekken any? My last experience with Tekken was Tekken 4, after that...they ruined how Hwoarang functioned...It really made me sad, but I play Tekken every now and again, but I hate how I get juggled like a f*cking clown.

Posted by RA_MO on September 1, 2010 at 6:15 p.m. #40

Well in case Juri does not make it, if they decide to put Hwoarang into the game, he is somewhat similar to her... Same fighting style but of course they are still different. One similarity I can say off the top of my head is that His hunting hawk is similar to her dive kick except she comes in from the sky and starts from the ground. But knowing capcom, they can make it where he has an air alternate of hunting hawk so it can be like Juri's dive kick.

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 6:24 p.m. #41

Ooh, that would be crazy good, I would love him even more of they gave him that SF spin.

I would love to see Jin in, but if memory serves correct, they wanted to keep original characters only for SFxT...but Jin is the posterboy for Tekken, right next to Kazuya, they might be obligated to put him in, at least with his Tekken 4 version where he learned Traditional Karate instead of the deadly Kazama-Style (Where Kazuya excels). If they were to connect styles to choose rivals...would that mean he's paired up with...Makoto? 0____o?

Posted by RA_MO on September 1, 2010 at 6:26 p.m. #42

@ChunLi

Well due to my PS3's blinking red light, I have not had much time to play anything but I intend of making a comeback soon. But I love both games equally. Granted I am better at Tekken but that does not stop me in the least in wanting to become the best in SSFIV.

I would not mind seeing Jin in this installment but he might be reserved for Namco's project. If he is not present, there is a decent chance that hwoarang wont make it either seeing as how in a way, they have become the ken and ryu of their universe.. Sure they do not fight the same one bit but they are the main focused rivalry between two different people in the Tekken world. ( I do not count Jin against his family since its more of a resolving of matters than rivalries). I suppose Kuma would not be so bad either since many want Gief to beat him up but the thing is, unlike other bears that Zangief has faced, I am pretty sure none of them have ever used martial arts as a fighting style. I have many to name in Tekken wise and street fighter wise but the question I wish to know is that out of the four they have now, Nina is the only one that truly has a reversal. Will they give it to her in the game or no. Also will they throw in low parries from Tekken? Will the bring back the parry system period in this game like from SFIII? Will they give tekken characters unblockables? Will they do the same for Street Fighter?

Just many things to think about as the time goes by and we await more information.

Which console do you own if not more than one?
Perhaps I can add you.

Street Fighter: Ryu, Chun Li, Guile, Blanka, Dhalsim, Ken, E. Honda, Zangief, Vega, Balrog, Sagat, Bison, Cammy, Fei Long, Akuma, Rose, Evil Ryu

PSN: Sirhc21

I know what you mean when it comes to not being able to play anything in a while, College just started back up for me so I really think the only game i'll be able to play is Birth by Sleep inbetween classes come September 7th.

I really like how you ran down the possibilities for both games, especially with that Zangief/Kuma bit. I always liked the rivalry between Jin and Hwoarang evolved, it's really captivating and deep.

Posted by SHOGUN on September 1, 2010 at 6:38 p.m. #45

Oh and either Bruce or Lei for Tekken or Adon, Dee Jay for SF

I left out Eddie Gordo coz I couldn't even fathom how he would work in a 2D realm, but probably alot like Elena

Posted by RA_MO on September 1, 2010 at 6:44 p.m. #46

But once I get my PS3 up and running I will have to make up for lost times and practice up on both games. Although I am not trying to brag in any way but I remember my fight record for Tekken 6 to be pretty darn good and for SSFIV its so far much better than I would have thought it would be. If I remember correctly in Tekken 6 I use, Julia, Lili,King and Anna. For SSFIV I use Guile, Chun Li, Ibuki, Balrog and Blanka. Tekken my better players are Julia and Lili. I used them way before any tier listings came out for them. Had no clue they would make top ten. Same goes with SSFIV. I started practicing Chun Li before I knew anything about her being the top of the list. But yeah.. I will make sure to give you an add asap.

My PSN: Reimon_Durbrow

I too own a Wii and the 360 but have no idea if I should get SSFIV for the 360. I have thought about it but the only thing I can not stand is that horrid D pad. If I were to do so, I would have to get fight stick. Though I am no master on it, I have been practicing and it seems better than that controller in every way. So $100 dollar controller for guaranteed good gameplay is worth it to me.

over 35 characters in street fighter x tekken cool

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 6:56 p.m. #48

I really don't own Tekken 6 myself, but if I can find a way to pull my friend away from his copy, I could probably snag it for a while. I used people I normally used in Tekken 3/4 whom kinda suck now compared to others in Tekken: Jin, Hwoarang and Heihachi.

When it comes to SSF4, I use Akuma, Makoto, Sakura, Chun li and Rose.(From secondary to main, respectively). Same thing with Chun Li, I used her since Alpha because I loved the way she worked, not from whoring the Tier list.

If it were me, I wouldn't invest in buying another copy of SSF4 for the 360, on top of the Fight Stick, that just seems like too much at once, but if you can afford it, by all means, "Go for broke!"

Posted by ChunLi on September 1, 2010 at 6:59 p.m. #49

Also, I only use Akuma because I play Morrigan in Vampire Savior, so if you were to see me play SF the first couple times with him, you would've seen me make excessive jumps and spamming air hadoukens and random Shun-Goku-Satsus left and right. I've calmed down and learned to use the Morrigan of Steet Fighter properly, I just love doing the famous button combination. ^_^

What insane combos? If those are "insane" the combos in SF are epic combos, over here SF Land, we pull off crazy movements with our joysticks/pads pulling off crazy finger work while tekken-land has juggling in the air, besides, Street Fighter is awesome, that rules ur future argument invalid

@ darko_p86

1. Fan art would be really nice, but I simply don't have the time or resources to manage a section like that right now. I'm hoping in the future that may change, but for right now it's not something I can do.

2. Some very cool stuff coming as far as the site goes. One thing, very soon.

3. I play online sometimes, although I'm not on a ton. I have only have XBL at the moment. I'll email you my gamertag so you can add me.

4. Right now I main Rose, have done so since Vanilla. I pretty much don't touch anyone else, because I lack the time to learn them well. I have also dabbled with Makoto, and I'd like to learn her, but just don't have the time.

5. I'll be happy with SSF4 if these new things that are coming to the arcade version are added as DLC, and also more of the replay functionality that fans have been hoping for. Those are the big things.

@AnsatsukenChamp
difference is there's not big scaling, doesn't matter if you can do a 114 hit combo because you can't kill anyone with one

Insane combos means VIABLE in a real fight, DAMAGING in a real fight and to the point where if you're good enough you can KO someone with a single combo and you don't have to worry about any meter beside the one with your life on it, and also require the insane precise finger work also. SF doesn't have that, not anymore.

SF isn't awesome, period point blank it hasn't been awesome since 1996 when they originally started making 3, where they bent to fan pressure and added Ryu and Ken in, only for the sake of being popularity among but even then the main stream popularity took a major decline.

I don't give a damn what you have say about my argument being invalid because I wasn't talking to you. Plus it wasn't an argument it was a fact, Tekken and Street Fighter focus on many different things and that's why you can't really say one's better than the other.

unless it's sells, because the fact is beside the money you drop on the game, you owe capcom NO loyality, same with Namco. Plus really the companies owe you nothing in return, beside making sure their product works correctly with the features they programed into it. Capcom from a business point of view is dropping the ball by keeping it's finger on the pulse of what it's hardcore wants and trying to deliver and not just make a product they want to make which effects production by changing it to fit fan demands and limits their creativity by not allowing them to truly diversify.

How many people want a completely new capcom based fighter that has no familiar cast? not very many on this site, however if I told you some characters have similarities to older characters would that from similar move sets to mannerisms? you probably would be less hesitant to accept the idea right? But you'd tell me there's be no market for it...let me tell you about a little game called BlazBlue, it basically was what Street Fighter 3 was originally going to be, NEW cast with similar styles to the Guilty Gear original crew, added new ideas into the mix and classic fighting mechanics into on solid game, and there's an new one that has come out and IT'S GOT DLC CHARACTERS! and this is a game using 2D sprite art, so yes theres a market for that. but the guys at Capcom, Namco and hell even SNK and their fans all but ignore that and want a character like this other one or want this character with very few new ideas mixed in.

TLDR version:
The only person to blame for no new fighting games or ideas in the market is because alot of fighting game companies( Capcom, Namco and SNK) are trying to please the fan base and not really shooting for the stars Like they did with Street Fighter(1) and 2 world warrior.
