Today, Mr. Wizard, one of the people behind the Evolution Fighting Game Championships, announced an online Super Street Fighter 4 tournament open to everyone in the U.S.A. and Canada.• Xbox 360 Online Tournament, top 8 matches will be streamed live with a broadcast team.
• Tournament will kick off on December 11, 2010 and run through the entire day for those that advance. The finals will be played on December 18, the following Saturday.
• $5 USD to enter.
• The winner will receive free airfare, hotel accommodations and entry into EVO 2011.
• Galaxy for Gamers will be helping to run the show and ensuring no one cheats by using the same IP address to enter twice.
• Mr. Wizard said they'll be giving out something special that's never been given out at an EVO tournament before.
• In the future, an online tournament for both systems might be an option.
• Brackets will be separated into 8 quadrants to cover the U.S.A. and Canada to try to localize matches, so you're playing people close to you. The top 2 players from each quadrant will advance.
• The top 8 finishers will get a prize package of some sort.
• For those that continue to advance, you should have a new match every 10 to 15 minutes.
• There will be a Beat A Pro challenge held on Dec. 18th as well.
Question: what is Mr Wiz going to do about lag? Don't get me wrong an online tournament is a great idea... but you also have to account for lag, and in fighting games, you some times need one key move to come out and if lag is an issue, your tournament is going to have problems.
@4: Xbox Live generally has less lag than Playstation Network.
That's BS about XBL having less lag than PSN. Its the same stability given that either system has people smart enough to not bother playing Orange/Red/unstable Yellow matches.
Sorry but $60 a year doesn't magically give XBL better connection. It's all about your ISP. I'm just Saiyan.
Actually it's a pretty popular consensus that XBL, generally, has less lag. Ever watch Peaceful Jay or SRK streams? The bars don't always reflect the in-game lag. I've played against red bars on XBL and have had no issues; and I've also had the opposite experience, green bars who lag terribly. Don't take the connection meter to heart too much. That's not to say people lag all the time to the point where it's unplayable on PSN, it's just a fairly general agreement within the gaming community.
All the pro's play on xbox 360, it would be illogical for it to be ran on the ps3. Xbox live is far superior, which is the network itself, not a better system in itself, that's another topic.
I'm planning on getting a ps3, but because of blu-ray, i have no interest in playing ssf4 on the psn network.
Pfft, they just fscked themselves over by playing favorites on one console.
To all of those who say XBL has a better connection then PSN, I have one question for you: have you ever seen DSP play SF4 online? Most of his SF4 gameplay is on XBL, and I've seen really bad, really laggy matches.
Alright, in all fairness I'll say that I play on PSN, and I sometimes get a laggy match, but overall nothing terrible (most of the time). I just chalk it up to different experiences and skill levels and I just assume that the good players put in the money to make sure their connections don't suck.
How are they playing favorites on console? the ps3 is the system of choice at evo tournaments. XBL has proved superior by many top players, FACT. I had to buy a ps3 stick just for ps3 tournies. It is what it is, no bias involved.
XBL online is NOT better than PSN, if anything it's all a damned myth,I a owner of both consoles and have the game for both consoles have notice that the online is the same, PSN does not lag, neither does 360, it's all because XBL has a larger user fanbase not because the online is better, saying that is retarded.
lol, Xbox Live faster than PSN? Yeah because Xbox Live and PSN are ISPs. lmfao. You kiddies need to calm down with your flame war crap. If you don't have both, you are borderline poor. 'Nuff said.
@20: You're basing your opinion of XBL connections on DSP videos? You do realize that those videos are probably less than 5% of his matches and are chosen because they lag. Like I said, both online services have their pros and cons, but most gamers feel that XBL has the better general connection.
@19: Playing favorites? I would say that choosing Xbox for one online tournament and PS3 for just about every other tournament is fair. If not, it's more bias towards PS3 than anything.
@15 is correct
I wish the myth would die about diffferent network lag on various systems. But there remains many to be educated.
I have both ssf4 for both 360 and ps3 fyi. I prefer the 360 version not because of the network lag but because of slight frame lag on the ps3 version.
I can't wait to see this, this isn't Japan's godlike internet connection this is crapy American connection & for once I'll see true pro level laggy matches lol.
can we leave the console war for something else and get back to street fighter
XBL has less lag. That's not an opinion, it's just a fact.
The reason is because XBL is a closed network run by Microsoft. It's Microsoft's servers and routers, not Capcom's.
On the Sony side the Game Developers are on their own.
This is one of the reasons why the 360 doesn't have a Web Browser. You wouldn't be able to access the HTTP via the connection. It's also the reason why you won't get steam support on 360 when Portal 2 comes out.
Portal 2 might make Microsoft reevaluate their network policies.
for those people saying that it's BS saying that xbox has better connection than PSN, let me tell you this...
I have both systems, ssf4 on ps3 and 360...I can for sure say that I have encounter A LOT LESS lag in 360 than PSN, regarless of green / red bars and I assure you, I'm a BIG ps3 fan..360 for me is meh (in fact I only have like ssf4, BB:CS and tales of vesperia on 360...)
Too bad EVO sucked balls last year. Disorganized and all sorts of stupid bull$hit makes me not want to return.
********************************
Wow, why are there always idiots trying to start console wars, favoring one console without even playing the other, giving out biased and bullsh!t information.
I own both XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 and I see a very big difference when it comes to SSF4 online play. The online play on 360 *IS* faster and much easier to find lag-free matches as opposed to the PS3. Landing strict and precise combos/links are easier on Xbox Live. Hell, even Justin Wong admitted this months ago. Why else do other online tournaments use 360 only, including God's Garden and Newegg.
Don't get me wrong, I love both consoles and they have their pros and cons. But Xbox Live is a paid monthly service and you simply get what you pay for compared to the free PSN service. These one-sided console fans really need to shut the hell up.
Very interesting... on the other hand, Microsoft must be happy. This is a nice advertisement to their console....
which also remind me: not on PC. Wish to, but can't play it. Why don't I get a console? Because I don't want to be tempted to play zillions of games. And I suck at a joystick. I am better with a keyboard. Suck to be me. Oh well... good luck to the rest.
How would srk hold a decent tournament if it allowed players outside of the u.s. and canada? it would be ridiculous, not sure how people could even complain about that.
they have to download some patch i think.......i did on the 360 it was about 145 megabytes.
@4 cause ps3 lags, I own ps3 and 360 and I have to give it to 360 FTW
@ Grimmjow316 #27
I TOTALLY agree. PLEASE STOP with the WAR and on with the tournament.
Cant wait to see the results... XDDDDDDDD
This will probably be executed poorly, considering so much honor and variables are involved.
@ #54 I completely agree. I'm getting a ps3 for christmas to compliment my 1080p tv, and because i want to play mgs4. I do not plan on buying super, too many issues, and no notable players play on that. 360 became the standard for online play. The 360 is ridiculously unpopular in japan, so if the japanese are playing on it, you've really have to take notice.
lol @ ppl saying that cuz godsgarden is on xbox that i must have less lag... when everyone has 80mbps+ connections the console doesnt matter.
I switched from 360 to PS3 and noticed no additional lag. Its the same sh!t. Who cares what system its on anyway. There will likely be a PSN EVO between now and July.

Stephen Keith Question
I own SF4 for Xbox and PS3. I also have TE sticks for both. I have been playing on Xbox for a very long time (Almost since release) until my Xbox red ringed for the 2nd time. While I work out the process to get it fixed, I picked up SF4 and a stick for PS3. I quickly noticed while redoing trials that there is what seems to be an input lag on the PS3. I was wondering if there is an legitimacy to the claims about the lag. I use an HDMI cable on my PS3 on an HD DLP and have noticed a difference between the two consoles.Any thoughts? P.S. What did you think of the music mix for Marvel at SB4? I thought it was pretty sweet and nostalgic. 90′s jamz FTW haha!
JWonggg Answer
There is input lag timing between the 2. I personally play on xbox and the fact that PS3 lags alot affects my gameplay a bit. I miss combos I usually never miss but you’ll adjust to it sooner or later. The music they used for Marvel is always better than the current soundtrack. I would listen to anything besides the current music.

ps3 has 2 frames of input lag, match that with the garbage network that the psn is, you can believe that it wont be played by any top players.
"All the pro's play on xbox 360, it would be illogical for it to be ran on the ps3. Xbox live is far superior, which is the network itself"
It's peer-to-peer with identical netcode. Any difference is local and anecdotal. It's common knowledge that they aren't on different literal "networks"—they could even play cross-platform if the parent companies would allow this to be enabled. So let's stop with the urban legends about this.
"Like @58 said, if the japanese are playing on the 360, a console that is incredibly unpopular in japan then you simply have to sit up and take note. Do you honestly think japanese people would go out of there way to buy a 360 just for ssf4 if there wasn't a good reason for it?"
Pro SF players were gifted Xboxes and accessories there to try to boost the system's profile. That's the reason. If you're claiming Xbox has had a sales bump in Japan since the release of SSFIV, this is a flat falsehood. If you're claiming the Xbox360 community of SSFIV players in Japan is even close to the size of its PSN equivalent, this would also be a flat falsehood (not even close, actually).
I don't have anything against any particular system and am not sure why anyone would (we are, after all, interested in the game and not so much the hardware, and I don't own stock in either Sony or Microsoft), but the urban legends from platform evangelists are silly.
PSN DAMMMIIITT! WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE IDIOTS, PS IS FAR OLDER AND MORE RESPECTABLE THAN STUPID BOXX! EVO IS PLAYED ON PS3 SO WHY NOT NOW!!! I FEEL LIKE PUNCHING SOMEONE!
Ok guys, we get it....PSN blows for high quality tournament calibre play...whatever. Honestly, were totally focusing on the wrong issue...ONLINE TOURNAMENTS?!?!? Really?!?! Seriously?!?! Is the people doing EVO just getting more lazy, or they don't even care anymore?! Or they just see the potential cash to make at the end of all this? Is Microsoft paying them off or something?
Ok....let me explain, before I lose you guys.....
Unless they plan on working this tournament like they do the Godsgarden feeds we see online with web cams, this is just begging for some serious cheating and hustling to go down...Trust me.
Let's just say me and my buddies want to hustle the tournament..I just gotta get all my hardcore godlike tier friends to take turns each round, play different styles and mind fuk everybody...who's to know? Then when we blow through the ranks, we just settle who's the representative for the bogus alias we made, and there u have it..
I have a life and a job, so honestly if I were to go through with this...KNOWING there's no web cam, its too easy to call up my local god tier friends and clean up shop for 5 bucks. Even if my buddies enter the tournament it just boosts our odds to represent our crew. Sorry EVO, but u fuked up on this one..
Not to mention lag...lol
Nuff said.
@#66
Well said
End of console wars debate haha
I hope Evo Japan has Third Strike. It's still widely played over there, and their average players are pretty much as good as the top level NA/EU players.
Nevermind the online lag, people will never settle the psn vs xbl business. The input lag alone is a good enough reason to have this on xbox. Multiple tests have PROVEN that the ps3 version has input lag. For those of you who don't understand, this means that all things being equal, your button inputs are registered slightly slower on ps3. This applies to offline and online games. Deal with it.
The problem with PSN is that players with PS3's have a wireless connection at their disposal. They are more likely to use it as someone with an Xbox is much less likely as they would have to buy a wireless adapter. PS3 also uses wireless G technology which is 10-15 times slower than wireless N.
Therefore the people on Xbox are using LAN cables a majority of the time. I was getting speeds of 784kpbs-1.75mpbs download on the PSN while wireless when I switched to a wired connection that changed to 24.17mpbs consistently.
So stop using your wireless connection and switch to wired, it will do wonders for you.
When people say pro players play on Xbox they mean tournament players. Not them. Trust a majority of the players online are far from being pro.

PS3 garbage online connection has been discussed to death. Xbox live is superior period. Why would mr wizard make it a 360 tourny when he uses ps3 exclusively at evo.
Why do we have 360 streams like peaceful jay, where alex valle, juicebox, marn, pr balrog, lamerboi, and countless others show up?
Sony is an evo sponsor, that's why they use the ps3. Money money money!!!!1
As for top players being gifted 360's, why is daigo still playing on his friends xbox live with the gamerinn account?
Get your facts straight..
WOOT! So glad I got my 360 now. However PSN is still my baby! If this tourneyy was for both systems you better believe my ps3 would be the one I'd be using. Just gotta make sure no one else is on my connection. :)!
I remember reading that in Japan, their broadband connection is superior to ours in the US, so generally their connections run a lot smoother. When Marn went out there for Godsgarden's stream, he even mentioned the quality of the connection was better than that of the US, and he was playing on the 360.
Now I own a PS3, the only reason I would get a 360 is particularly because of this game for two reasons: one, generally the server connections on 360 are much better because they are dedicated through Microsoft, thats why you have to pay for online play. PS3 has at most a decent connection for some fighting games, but the overall play is still shown to be a lot less than what the 360 does.
Also, and I know have made this a point, but there are a lot more players on the 360 than the PS3. Yes, there is the point that more well-known players ( Valle, Lamerboi, Marn, Wong, etc. ) usually play on there, but it has a bigger base of players for one, and two even though this doesn't realy tie into anything, but you can find your matches faster on there.
Damn it this might make me buy a 360, but we still want PC SUPER!!
Too bad Mr. Wizard already b*tched about Peaceful Jay's stream having somewhat of an "EVO" tourney. Nice idea stealing Mr. Wizard, Kudos to that! Btw your stream is complete garbage.
To me it makes sense the tourny is limited to one console, unless they were willing to pay for 2 winners. (since ps3 players can't play 360 players) Things would just get too complicated imo
Anyway, I play good players(and scrubs) on both systems, it really depends when you go on live/psn. I also get lag on both systems(just connect with the right people! 3 bars is usually enough), I get a lot of diconnects on 360 though (that may be because my wireless adapter is on it's way out :/)
The only big differences I feel are that my combos more consistent on 360(but that may be due to all the practice I had on ps3 beforehand)and that my friends that play fighting games are on psn
Sadly I recently started playing exclusively on arcade stick and I only have one for the PS3, and I'm not too great of a player, but I may try at this anyway.
Sorry bout the long post(my first one at that), just wanted to get my 2 cent out there :P
I'd like to know how this is going to be kept track of, it can be hundreds of thousands entering.
well probably more like 10's of thousands(you figure 30K watched evo on stream) but still, sounds like a lot to track.
I like it! I will do it, hell for $5 buck why not...That is a lot of "free" money for G4g and EVO LOL!!!
But seriously some of you needz betta connectionz
Interesting .. No xbox and don't plan to buy a new console just for an online tournament. But still might be the PS3 next!
Has for the hater , the youngster and the weak willed. The PS3 ain't worse . I play SF4 on pc and the multiplayer = worse. It's mostly because the 360's mostly regional thing(USA) and thus you have a greater chance finding someone closer to you.Since both console try to find regional close game first.
On PC the lag on SF4 was plain bad .. and it's a superior multiplayer machine .
Thus
Connection speed has not much to do with ping .Again you fail lamer. It's all about distance.Japan being a tiny country , the pinging seem much better.Japan being a smaller country also have better infrastructure . .True .. But also a lot of them share those infrastructure and it's just plain ignorance aussming they have better internet connection.
Actually internet it's a north american thing and they invest much more into it here.
KenScrub and BlackHart's comments are ****ing win
Not sure why people would want to include mexico, as it would make things very complicated, and they possibly wouldn't even be admitted into the united states for evo aswell. Canada wouldn't be much of an issue, aslong as they don't have any felonies.
I play on the PS3 for only one reason, I don't play with an arcade stick, and I like the ps3 controllers better. Therefore, I am sad it's not on ps3 as well. But who are we kidding, once the 3DS version comes out nobody will care about 360 or PS3 versions, AMIRITE???
Hmm you'd have to pay someone to modify a ps3 pad for the 360....
oh lawd
