RodneyT found a 5 page article over on FightingStreet.com examining the inspirations and lookalikes from the Street Fighter franchise in various movies, games and other media. After Mas Oyama, Soeno was the only other Karateka mad enough to launch a solo challenge on [one of] the strongest fighters in Thailand. Not surprisingly, the above real persons inspired the creation of the famous Street Fighter game characters Ryu & Sagat two decades later.
Notice the striking resemblance of the comic and game portrayals. There is not a gaming youngster in this world who does not know these two characters, but hardly anybody would know the true story behind them.
Wow some of those comparisons are awful. Abel/Zinedine Zidane? R Mika/Emma Bunton from the Spice Girls and Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls?
Does he really think that? Really?
its clear #2 was too lazy to read the info provided in the link of the original page. its not a coincidence that SF have a history on basing their characters on someone or something fact or fiction, known or unknown to the masses. having read the link, it clearly fits ryu's character, and it also shows why "generic karate masters" act this way... they are also based on those same events, which were massive for karate and the art of fighting all those years ago. similar to generic mafia tales, or scarface even(drugs). a lot of famous movies and characters are all based/spin offs of actual unknown events. great article
I typed alot... then my PC Crashed -_-
long story short, yes some people are clearly based entirely or in part off of real life people or other fictional characters. But given the title of this site's section, 'Rip Offs Page 1" i feel the author may have just been looking for ANY similarity for some of the fighters. The best example is, that R.Mika looks like "that annoying girl from the spice girls." yes some street fighters are similar to other characters, and sometimes they are downright copies in the case of our beloved Dan. But that doesn't mean that everyone in street fighter lacks originality and is derived from something else... does it?
#7 i never said otherwise as you can see when i said "but i also think some of the assumptions are way offff", so you are absolutely right. i also like to point out the page you read about rip-offs is not the original source for the comparisons. i dont buy them at all, but that page links you to the original ryu article which is a great read, which is also the one i read in full.
Capcom bases nearly all their characters on "someone." I've seen another comparison page a while ago and they were quite convincing. The capcom staff team probably read/watch a lot of media....anime and manga included. How else would Dudley's ultras be inspired from Fighting Spirit or Yun/Yang look just like Duo/Trowa? lol
hi again. the link titled "The design of Ryu and Sagat" is the page to read. the author of the the Rip-offs page didnt even read it right. he compares Mas Oyama as ryu, who he says is korean. but he's comparing the wrong man. the page tells the tale of 3 karate legends: Mas Oyama, Kurosaki, then last, Yoshiji Soeno(ryu) and his nemesis "Reiba", the "Dark Lord of Muaythai who is a very loose sagat. he basically just accomodates the foe from thailand story. you have to read it to understand. you also need knowlegde on SF1, and the loss quote's(it wasnt win quotes in sf1). with all ryu's wins the loser reminded him there is always that 1 challenger out there, then when you see how this real story ended and the void and emptiness that remained after all his wins, you will see it fits!
heres the page: http://crane.50megs.com/index6w.htm
also on that page is shows the images of Yoshiji Soeno, a Kyokushin Karate legend(ryu) & "Reiba", the "Dark Lord of Muaythai (sagat) being potrayed in the old Japanese martial art comics "Karate Baka Ichidai" (The Karate Idiot). then it shows their resemblence in the comic to ryu and sagat. they look exactly the same!!(Reiba even has the eye patch) showing this is who they were based off. i believe that site is great for anyone into the history of martial arts and not just video games. ive bookmarked it and will read the whole thng:)
Jesus christ, he's clutching at straws to connect some of these dots. It's also insulting to stuff words in Capcom's mouth and say "inspired by" for half of these, nobody knows what's going through the heads of a character designer when they're creating something, especially when one character might go through several changes before a final choice.
How could they not point out the similarity between Rose and Lisa-Lisa from Jojo bizarre adventure??? both use scarfs to fight ,both are italian.and have the same weird hair...........Jojo might not be so famous in the rest of the world but in japan Jojos IS huge
lol i figured any street fighter fan would've known about the rip-offs article.
No only is JoJo famous in Japan, but so is Hokuto no Ken. There is some early concept art of Ryu looking like Kenshiro but in a gi. R.Mika is based on several characters, but most predominately it would be Joshi wrestling from the late 80s and early 90s and several blond female wrestlers that existed then. There is no such thing as "originality," because everything is taken from somewhere and has been done before. How original something gets is based on how well they portray the archetype.
It's pretty much no secret Capcom (and SNK) loves JoJo a whole lot. And without those sources, Akiman & Co wouldn't of designed all these characters that are now very memorable and engraved in gaming.
I always thought C. Viper looked a lot like Angelina Jolie.
Here another One Hugo is suppose to be Andre the giant for WWF
Okay one that I thought was completely obvious but got missed was Dhalsim.
I would say that he is a mix between Gandhi and Buddha.
- Both are from India.
- Both were for non-violence and peace.
- Both are highly spiritual
- Both believed in the whole "Enlightenment" concept.
- The clothing Dhalsim and Gandhi wear are underwear, not or *clothes of the people.
*This meaning India was very poor at the time of Gandhi. What Gandhi did was wear very little clothing to fit in with his people.
So as I read more of this, it seems this person is only going for the looks of different characters, but not so much into the story of them.
Son, I am dissapoint.
The Ryu one was kinda stupid if you look over it it starts off with Masutatsu Oyama and then switches to Yoshiji Soeno. Alot of what Oyama did has been legend for years before hand, he has more of a relationship with Yoshiji if you read up on it, Yoshiji was known as the Dragon, who fought the muay-thai legend and when he was sent to Thailand another pupil, The tiger, both went.(Like Ryu and Ken)
Mas Oyama supposedly beat the Muay-Thai legend with a triple aerial kick however it's stated on the source of the "Rip offs" page that there's no evidences that shows the match even happened.
The Billy Blanks one still isn't sourced especially the one where it specifically states he was made to look like Billy Blanks.
A few of the others I have complaints about are Sean and Bobby since in the late 80's into mid 90's alot of Black characters were shown playing basketball or many other sports and relating it on nothing forgetting that alot of Modern flags carry Red White and blue.
WTF were thinking comparing R Mika to all of them
some of the ones in page 3 just get into the absurd.
I'm sorry Catalyst but seriously this isn't news this is mostly fan-spec with no real grounding or facts.
Some of the stuff I'll buy, I even thought the Abel/Emelianenko one was an interesting theory, but the more I read, it became obvious this guy gives absolutely no consideration for time on some of these. How can capcom put Jean Reno's likeness in SFIII as thanks for a game that wouldn't be made for 5 years (presuming the game he speaks of is Onimusha 3). Also, as stated previously, some of the these verge on "I don't know, I'll just make something up" territory.
when creating characters, you need references. unless they are geniuses, no creator can create something truly unique, they will always have ideas coming from somewhere as a starting point. it's what i've learnt in my animation college. references is everything.
In any case, this was a good read. Some of the references were just a bit wtf, but it amused me nonetheless. I thought the Helio Gracie/Oro one was funny. I admit, there are some similarities in the references they made, but I think it's more so just because they're old. Beastly, and old.
@Ex_Ein:
Here's a link to Goddard saying he modeled Dee Jay after Billy Blanks.
http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/bl...
"I was inspired by Billy Blanks in King of the Kick Boxers, and sent Japan the movie plus a really rough sketch (I am a cartoonist at best) with a description of personality and fighting style (a mix of Western Kickboxing and Capoeira). "
oh............sry........i havent looked the 2nd page of the rip off....................forget my early comment xD
Catalyst the thing is the place that said it that you linked to didn't have it sourced, and he said Inspired, Modeled is like Fei Long who is clearly 1 for 1 bruce lee, from acting career to fighting style and outlook onlife, while Deejay's character and fighting style barely resemble what Billy did in the movie.
the rip off page says "made him look like billy blanks" when you look at Deejay do you ever see him looking/acting like like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y86Jsv... this!
To the people complaining, some of the things in here are a stretch, the author admits as much, but some of the things obviously were inspirations or taken from popular media/culture.
The article isn't perfect, again some of the things really are hard to believe or just simply don't match up, but there's quite a few of these that makes sense or look a heck of a lot alike when he does the side-by-side comparisons. How much you want to believe these actually match up is up to you.
Another obvious relation that wasn't mentioned
Akuma=Nosferatu Zodd from the manga berserk
http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/_...
http://streetfighteralpha.manga.com/i...
Both became more inhuman to gain power. In the berserk world demons exist, and Zodd has become one; Akuma is known for his Raging Demon. If Zodd isn't an obvious inspiration, then I don't no what is.
Roy Nelson = Rufus.
Both are Kung Fu style fighters and their beer guts are undeniable.

i always thought dee jay was influenced by billy blanks' character in king of the kickboxers since was first introduced into SSF2. come on,the flat top and the two braids in the back.
That's cool. Interesting where the characters got inspired from
