IPlayWinner.com recently asked me to do an interview to discuss some of the drama that had come up in the community.wow it is very hard to hear you man and I have a hard time to understand. Anyhow, I didn't even know there was a controversy or something.
On the other hand, I wish eventhubs and IPlayWinner would combined into one site... but that's just me. IPlayWinner doesn't have a lot of people commenting on posts, and eventhubs have similar news to IPlayWinner.
The guy's argument was baseless. YouTube is a public video hosting site. He essentially is angry that people sought out content hosted there through EventHubs instead of through somewhere else, which is simply another way of saying he wishes he had been as successful as EventHubs.
He describes EventHubs as "insultingly" popular, but whose fault is it that he's "insulted" by the lesser popularity of any other site? Why is he entitled to financial compensation just because he has declared he wanted it? Hint: if you want to control content, you don't host it on YouTube and make it viewable to anyone.
Now that I think about it, Catalyst is pretty cool publishing those leaked lists. It takes a lot of guts to stand behind rumors.
And I really don't know where the copied article accusations come from. I've done a quick re-scan and all Eventhubs text content is original (minus tier lists from the JP wiki).
This website is awesome. These guys are being ridiculous and most of them are just jumping on the 'I hate EventHubs' bandwagon out of respect for Maj. This is the 'World Wide Web'. You don't steal their content, you link to it. If they want more content protection, they need to write a book or make their content physical media only. Ignore these dudes and do what you do.
You're not on top unless others envy you or attempt to tear you down.
@SpicyBurrito I 100% agree, this site is more current, more easy to navigate, and more complete information!
Catalyst is such kool guy in his modesty & humility in that he doesn't want the glory or the credit, he just does it for the community! :)
I stand behind Catalyst on this for one simple reason: Maj apparently never contacted him and asked him to stop, despite actually meeting him in person (at EVO I think it was).
He was seething the whole time without saying anything; if you've got a serious problem with someone's behavior, you should point it out to them. How else is that person supposed to know they're doing anything wrong in the first place? Cry more Maj.
And this website is very accessible, that's why I like it.
@Catalyst
During the interview Pherai asks you about Versus City and you say the following, "I don't think I've ever used Versus City content, I've linked to his stuff. Does he even have content? Isn't it just a news outlet?". Off the top of my head I remember the article about the first SSF4:AE loctest cited VC as a source, doesn't that count as using VC content? Also, wasn't it kind of presumptuous of you to ask if VC has any content? Off the top of my head they have a glossary of Japanese fighting game terms, doesn't that count as content? If you aren't sure if a site has original content or just posts news, shouldn't you just say nothing at all?
@Null
Fair statement. When he said content, I was thinking of stuff more like guides and other things, but news is definitely content too.
If I could take it back, I would have worded my response differently, but there's no way to do that now.
But, as I said in the interview, I screw up. There's no way in heck I'll ever do everything perfectly, and that includes this response you pointed out.
But I will own up to it and try to make up for the times I screw up.
Pff, didn't know at all about this drama thing with SonicHurricane, but boy, that was ridicolous imo.
People who regularly check EH don't do it just for combo vids (lot of content comes from that, but things like events coverage, interviews etc), let alone Maj's.
Claiming EH is actually stealing content (and money) from him, when HE's the one allowing embedding (not to mention, other websites do exactly the same thing, but strangely none of them gets bashed) seems just frustration over the fact that the website doesn't earn Maj any money. Not to mention, I always see Catalyst giving credit.
Heck, if it wasn't for EventHubs, lots of people probably wouldn't even know about his site (at least, that applies to me), his 2k hits could be even less.
@Catalyst
Alright, that explanation is good enough, but maybe you should explain that to Reno:
@27 All that money went to those gold toilets lol good podcast did have to turn up the volume but it was good nonetheless.
@Null
Just letting you know that there's no contact form on Versus City's website, at least that I saw, but I did post a comment on there, but it's awaiting moderation. Here's a copy and paste.
"Hello Reno,
This is Catalyst from EventHubs.com.
I didn’t see a contact form on your website, so I don’t see a way of getting a hold of you directly. I’d like to talk to you about the problems you’ve brought up.
I can see you’re very unhappy with me.
I apologize about the comment you quoted above. News is definitely content, and I should have worded my response completely differently, but I misspoke.
I also apologize for offending you by not seeking permission first to link back to your site. From my experiences, most people are happy with a link back and a blurb, but I didn’t realize you would take this much offense to my postings.
Please get in touch with me when you can, and I’d like to discuss this matter further to see if there’s any way we can move forward. You can reach me via the contact form here.
Why dont all you guys shoryuken eventhubs iplaywinner hadouken.net etc just all pitch in on some house, condo whatever and all make one website. You bastards could be the next google if you stopped fighting.
Wow had no idea there was issues going on in the community. While i do acknowledge the fact that 97% of the content eventhubs puts up isnt original they do site their sources. Every once in a while i would check out the original source to see if they have anything else interesting. However that being said my main reason for returning to Eventhubs instead of going to SRK is simply because of how simple the site is to navigate. Sure SRK has all the original frame data etc but its all stored in a forum that requires you to search. Eventhubs site layout is a lot more welcoming for someone that just wants to quickly find some useful data hence why I would rather come here cause its slowly becoming the official street fighter portal site. Being a web developer site layout that cater for usability and accessibility have a very large effect on keeping users on there site and Eventhubs is just better at it than most of the other websites ive visited. Any who thats just my two cents on everything. I wont ever deny the importance of SRK and other sites but i dont think to compete is the aim of Eventhubs but to be a portal where you can get all the latest information out of the community is. Maybe to quell the issue content holders can request direct links to their site instead of embedded videos. Who knows hopefully they work something out.
After thinking about it, I think the whole content argument is a red herring. A lot of content creators are happy with being featured by EventHubs so why are a few of them not? Well, it's important to note that Maj was not only a content creator, he also owns a website. SH, SRK, IPW, VersusCity are all websites too that rely on page hits for income just like EventHubs.
Although most content creators would be happy with the link, website owners are not happy when other websites steal their hits. Catalyst should know how that feels.
So the moral of this story is don't treat website owners the same as content creators on youtube. If the news is from another website, get permission to repost it in it's totality or post only a link to the main article.
Forums are a gray area though. It depends on the poster or the EULA.
I just posted this on the IPW comments, so figured i would here as well.
Interesting listen, Its a hard subject to try and debate, but as mentioned in a comment a few above (on the ipw comments), alot of sites do this, not just EH.
I for one would never of heard of SH if it wasnt from EH posting the combo vids, and once i watched the video i straight away browsed through SH to see what other gems they had stashed away that i could read/watch.
I generally check two sites for fighting games news and thats SRK and EH and yes pretty much the front pages are the same in regards to topics, but that doesnt stop me from checking both sites and the comments the users of that site have posted. So this whole copy/paste stuff to me is pointless, ( as long as credit is given where credit is due of course) as its a community news site its role is to round up all the best topics of that day so i dont have to go an browse 15 YT channels and several sites, and lets the community discuss.
Anyways i hope this gets sorted out, the SF community wont grow aslong as the major sites are bickering amongst themselves, Would it not just be easier for say the 5 top SF/fighting game sites to form some sort of online group kinda how SB nation has done with sports blogs. It would make stuff so much easier when having to link/provide credit (plus one login for all sites is always a bonus in my eyes as i always forgot my login in details :/ )
@catalyst So now versus city wants direct permission to link to their website? I see posting a direct link with source no longer suffices.
You're a real class act dude. I don't think there's very many people who would handle the situation with the calm and understanding you've portrayed. Certainly no one in the so called 'old school' elitist club.
Their insistence on continuing this debate out in the open instead of working it out in private with you exposes them for the elitist and immature attention whores that they are.
The other problem with this site is that there's no standard attribution/source link. And why not instead of posting Maj's videos directly post a thumbnail.
On my own website I have it so it automatically grabs the thumbnail from a youtube video. And I'm doing this from Blogger! Granted, I have super haxxor leet skills when it comes to Blogger but I digress.
This isn't the first time you got complaints about not hyperlinking.
You should update you software to at least have a standard link/source form field. You would be less likely to forget.
I have never once had anything I've ever wanted to contribute to the discussions here at eventhubs. There have been many notable discussions here, and many terribly ignorant ones.
BUT BY GOD, this article, and the comments on this post, are all pretty unanimous. Ive been to SRK, Ive been to IPW, and I see the good in these sites for sure. But for a casual player like me, there is no better place, that is as organized, informative, and FUN as eventhubs.
I don't care if you link to other videos, I would have NEVER seen those vids without you, and those people should be THANKFUL. But yet again, as is pretty indicative of the Street Fighter community, the guys who played Third Strike in the arcades are just mad that people like ME (An engineering student with no major arcades in my city), don't have to wade through tons of garbage(SRK), or have to read complicated text FAQS describing moves.
I can just come here for clarity, and a good BASIS for my playing. And I might beat some of them online, and they're just going to be sore that the community is exploding to the masses like me, rather than being hardcore and underground.
Who the flip cares.
@Catalyst
Reno's contact information isn't listed on the front page, but you can find it on the other parts of the website, like on Reno's various profiles:
http://reno.versuscity.net/profile.php
http://reno.versuscity.net/freelance.php
http://reno.versuscity.net/resume.php
BTW, you said one of his email addresses verbatim on the IPW podcast "reno at versus city dot net, right?" and Pherai confirmed it so I don't know how you're confused about how to get in touch with him.
@Catalyst
Alright, I understand now. Yes, reno at versuscity dot com is one of his email addresses, his other email address is negativereno at hotmail dot com, although I don't know if he even uses that one anymore. The links that I posted worked fine until a few hours ago, someone took them down very recently, here's the Google cache of two of them:
Are you retarded?! This is the Internet!! You think other blogs contact each other about reposting info?!?! Hahahahahaaa!! You think hypebeast.com hits up highsnobiety.com and asks if they can republish content? As long as there is a link back to where it came from there should be no problem!! And from time you post something on YouTube.. That's it. It's a wrap. I can take that video and post it on my mums vajazzle and you can't say S H I T
This is just a bunch of old timers who are pissed because eh seems to be growing with the new life that has been breathed into the fighting game community and they're bitter.
What they don't realize is that most of the new guys in the online fighting scene are not super nerds. I like eh because they keep it short and sweet and it's entertaining. I wouldn't know any of these other sites if it wasn't for eh anyway.
Only thing I don't like is how catalyst just bans people, and sometimes for unjust and biased causes.
BTW, if you guys have any questions about the situation, please funnel them over to the forums area of the site, because a lot of things have already been discussed over there, here's a link: http://forums.eventhubs.com/viewtopic...
You can still post them here in the comments, and I'll answer any new ones that come up, but if all possible, please look at the forums first.
