Video of Starnab's Fei Long in Street Fighter 4

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • March 12, 2010 at 10:21 p.m. PST
James pointed out this video featuring the French player Starnab (Fei Long) against Dieminion (Guile) at the World Game Cup recently. This was a best of 5 money match with some very impressive play from a character you don't see very often.

^ I disagree. I couldn't judge him because his opponent wasn't really too skilled

Die is pretty well known for Guile but he seemed to not know the match up that well during ex kicks and the jump in medium punch.

nobody knows the matchup against Fei!!!
and thats a huge advantage

Starnab plays a pretty good Fei Long. You can check out his other matches on youtube if you are not sure.

#6 good match i like to see people lose that rely on the throw to win. i know its part of the game but come on three in one match BORING!!!!!

draw2 said on March 12, 2010 at 11:55 p.m.

that Guile was terrible.
where the hell was his offensive play...he spent most of the start walking backwards.
Pressure is the key to Guiles game.
How can you say that Fei Long was actually that good when his opponent wasnt doing anything!?

#13
JerseyFame said on March 13, 2010 at 12:28 a.m.

Stop showing Guile videos if you are not going to show dagger_g, gilley, fuson or Geom Mod Inside...

otherwise you are making fun of the serious Guile players who push the envelope with a character who is completely nerfed and weak.

This Guile playe dold school turtle style and thats why people everywhere think Guile sucks.

Show the assassins with Guile so that our fix guile argument is justified.

#14
PhinnyCupcakes said on March 13, 2010 at 12:31 a.m.

Justin Wong's Fei Long is much more impressive. I could probably do well in a mirror match with this guy.

#15
DaHumanSpyda said on March 13, 2010 at 12:55 a.m.

@JerseyFame

Lemme get this straight, you want them to show ppl who are kickin butt with Guile in order to prove that he needs a buff? Doesn't make much sense to me...

#16
THawk said on March 13, 2010 at 1:05 a.m.

That Guile sucked because Guile sucks... and I'm sure he didn't know the match-up.

Anyway, credit to the Bruce Long for not missing the combos. Wonder how much money was on the line?

#17
b4ym4n said on March 13, 2010 at 1:11 a.m.

@DaHumanSpyda

I agree with jerseyfame. Guile, when played offensively, is one of the most technical street fighter characters ever. If you watch a Guile rush someone down and see how awful his damage and 1-frame links are, a buff is more than justified.

On a side note, Guile, like any charge character, does not need to play defensively. It's so painful that everyone thinks that.

#18
ChaosAura_ said on March 13, 2010 at 1:18 a.m.

Dieminion is not a bad player. He remained blocking and holding back because that chicken wing is so beastly.

Telvanni said on March 13, 2010 at 1:32 a.m.

Dagger G plays defensively too. He stays at outside of sweep range, and uses Booms as well as normals to keep the opponent out. Guile's always been a zoning character.

And I call shenanigans on anyone saying that Dieminion played "terrible" when he took the game to a 3-2. AKA: One set away from winning.

#21
KDash said on March 13, 2010 at 1:32 a.m.

Man I love fei Long. Ever since SUPER SF II. Thats why i used his sprit successor Yang in strike.

But Fei is so tough to be good with. And SUPER IV doesn't seem to fix his issues.
Oh well, I still love the guy, I will just admire from afar.

That was a quality match. And IMO Starnab is a better fei than Jwong.

#22
ZeroShift said on March 13, 2010 at 1:37 a.m.

@b4ym4 & Jerseyfame- amen.
This video in particular doesn't exactly do any guile players justice, more so, reinforces on what most people think of guile players - boring turtles.
But seeing as you don't vs many fei players as well (A guile aggressor myself), being intimidated and playing like a turtle would be expected, especially in that kind of tournament.
If he played aggro like Dagger_g , then it'd be a match to watch.

#23
Guile said on March 13, 2010 at 2:23 a.m.

if u dislike guile for being a turtler (which is most guile haters) then u need to also get on the guile needs a buff train. Seriously.

if anything the buffs they give him would be offensive. remember they were supposed to fix his footsies and normals game. thats an offensive buff. They also added the sonic hurricane, but if its just a way to counter FB spamming its just gonna be a defensive measure rather then an offensive measure like a comboable version. Thats why we should all also want it to be comboable

if they just fix the flash kick, like some old schoolers are saying, he might go back to turtling. but thats not gonna happen. its obvious Capcom butchered it for this purpose. if they fix the FK they'll very likely fix more offensive stuff to make up for it.

so the funny thing is, the more u hate guile, the more u should want the buffs. fixing him = more offensive = less annoying for u

and if u like guile, u shoudl want the buffs anyways

and if u dont care, then i just wasted ur time.

i mean almost all of us, its fair to say, guile fan or not, dont like to see a guile who plays like this.

#24
WorstGiefEVER said on March 13, 2010 at 2:33 a.m.

Guile is a defensive character, so he is playaed defensively, not sure why people find that hand to understand.

#25
Dicktator said on March 13, 2010 at 2:37 a.m.

Oh wow I remember sparring with him on Xbox Live a while back... we had about 7 matches ended up 5-2 in his favor.

Man he reached this far? I feel so good about my Bison right now.

and to #2 You're a douchebag

#26
Guile said on March 13, 2010 at 2:46 a.m.

its not bad to play defensively. and guile is primarily defensive

but u also need good offense too

u cant just hopelessly hold back, pray, and sonic boom

the evolution of guile's gameplay style through charlie, remy, mvc2 and snk vs cap brought out a more offensive style

thats what people want

more offensive, but still defensive so to be true to guile's style.

#27
Smorgasboard said on March 13, 2010 at 2:51 a.m.

Poor Fei Long. Star of the post but people still only want to talk about the co-star, Guile.

#28
cactusjack said on March 13, 2010 at 3:13 a.m.

guile is a defensive player but in my book that's half the strategy it's just not how good you can combo or link etc it's how good you can block keeping an opponent out can and is harder than hitting them some times yes some people do take it to extremes but 4 me(as guile is my main)i take my blocking seriously and see it as important part of sf for any character

I'd say both? though from what I see, fei are rarer then guile.
But true this really is meant to be a fei long attraction xD oh wells

#32

The guile player don't attack because feilong force him to stay in the corner...

#33
guile_makoto said on March 13, 2010 at 5:06 a.m.

I hate turtling guile is my main I never stay back I always rush people down it works but I have to stay back I can't rely on flash kick cuz it gets be by normals how is that and I fought a turtling ryu the other day how gay is that?????

Here's a good Guile player. Yazu (Grandmaster Rank from Japan)

Cauptain said on March 13, 2010 at 8:59 a.m.

"its not bad to play defensively. and guile is primarily defensive" WRONG.

Guile is primarily defensive only in SFA3 and SF4.

Guile always been offensive at SF2,SF2CE,SF2HF,SUPER and SSF2T.

The turtling Guile position is very necessary.

i still think FeiLong has TO DO alot of work to win. His many combos only take alittle energy off the opponent. While 2 hits from Guile takes the same if not more than fei's many hit combos.

#41
Victor_Sagat said on March 13, 2010 at 11:19 a.m.

Ive played starnab a couple of times in the past. He put me in my place, his fei long is just incredible. 4 bar connection= he didnt drop a damn link.

#42
catscratch said on March 13, 2010 at 11:35 a.m.

"This Guile sucks..."

If you think Dieminion sucks that just shows that you don't main Guile, otherwise you'd know who he is. He's one of the best Guiles on the east coast. Why don't you post vids of your own where you face off against Sanford Kelly and others of that caliber, then you can talk about how much he sucks.

Great play by Starnab here though, and it looks like Dieminion wasn't too quick on reacting to those overheads. Feilong has a lot of tools and is pretty underrated IMO.

Guile is balance. All u need to know is that he is capable of beating every character. All u weak guile users need to stop complaining and go to the training room more often. U guys just want him to be overpower.

XBL GT = B BOY DRAW2

Main = Guile, Abel.

Anyone wanna play me...hit me up!!!

I'm Not saying I'm the best Guile...but I feel I definitely have more tricks in the bag then this Guile had!

And to those that mention GeoModInside...props to you!!!
That Guile is a KILLER!!!

"Guile is balance. All u need to know is that he is capable of beating every character. All u weak guile users need to stop complaining and go to the training room more often. U guys just want him to be overpower. "

You want to talk to who plays with Guile, lost because not trained?

This is pathetic on your part.

Guile is bad since the SFA3 and it got worse in SF4

If you are a player or Sagat or Ryu or motion character is easy to open your mouth and speak it.

Some people just know who is playing with fireball and dragon punch in SF because they do not play charge blows.

And then there are people who say that SFIV "rescued" the Golden Age SF2.

Really pathetic to say it.

SFIV is a mediocre game made by mediocre CRAPCOM to mediocre players. Its my opinion.

#47
Shantotto said on March 13, 2010 at 9:30 p.m.

Cool, Feilong vs Guile :) that's something you don't see very often.

#48
griever2000 said on March 13, 2010 at 11:02 p.m.

Every character have their weaknesses in SFIV. Some will have to work more to win. But they also have their advantages against other characters! IMO...it always (or very often) comes down to the way you use your character. Some strategies will work with some people and with others it won't.

Now I understand that some characters have A LOT of chances to win against the majority of the cast in SFIV. But then again, it's not impossible to beat them, just have to find THE way ;)

Oh and an Offensive Guile is SCARIER then a defensive one ;p
I think his power relies on the fact that he recovers really fast from his sonic booms and that he can counter a lot of moves with his normals...no ?

#49
draw2 said on March 13, 2010 at 11:10 p.m.

@ 47 & 49

Like I've said before...the people who hate hard on SF4 are usually 3S players...why?...because they've played 3S soooo long that they got good at it...now SF4 has arrived and they can't play it as well as they could 3S...so they hate on it.
People.

SF4 is unlike any other SF!!!
Different graphics, engine, gameplay...you simply can't compare it to any other SF!!!
And to say that people are saying SF4 "rescued" the Golden Age SF2 is ridiculous...anyone who ACTUALLY played SF from the start would not say that and would know that SF changed the whole platform of which fighting games are based on.
Capcom and Street Fighter created the foundation for fighting games!

All the above is a whole other "can of worms".

It's cool to see someone like #48 just give a nice simple "I liked it" comment though.

However...I will not accept that this Fei Long had a hard challenge...as good as he was.

#50
Gadouken said on March 14, 2010 at 4:47 a.m.

that fei long is really good

#51
deteknician said on March 14, 2010 at 8:32 a.m.

Starnab played real nice. Didn't miss one link. D didn't make one link. Also, where's the airthrow? Wake up SB's when oponnent has EX? I know Dimenion is good but I don't like his Guile. I understand the overhead though as Fei can go into rekkas from low. He can't really combo from overhead so I'd take the overhead.

#52
CL93 said on March 14, 2010 at 8:44 a.m.

To all of the losers saying that "starnab's fei-long sucked, ive seen better",
"that guile user sucked",
"i can beat both of those guys in the video with my character"

1. I'd like to see you use those characters better than them
2. I don't see you on t.v. taking on fighters like wong and sanford kelly, and if you're so good why aren't you in videos like them or famous?

Think before you speak you cocky nobodies. Thank you for your time <3

#53
frankie3nig said on March 14, 2010 at 11:58 a.m.

all the people who complain about guile being defensive in this match jus say dat cus they neva played a good fei. I learned da hard way that u almost neva want 2 move forward cus of rekkas and u dont want 2 b 2 aggressive because of chicken wing and his flame kick invincibility. AND 2 add ima viper player saying dat also sakura main. People plz understand wats going on b4 u speak. FEI owns da horizontal spacing.

#54
Novacane said on March 17, 2010 at 3:11 p.m.

hmm, his fei long is good but not mastered.

It may be risky to do fei longs most damaging combos because it takes really good timing, take chicken wing to standing hard punch for example.

Still i think guile always had trouble with fei long since SSF2Turbo. Its like once u trap guile in the corner its very hard for him to get out.

But remember there is always a way to get out of something.
