You're looking at one top player using a character he's played for nearly 2 years, and another top player using a character he's played for almost 2 months.
The only reason Momochi is even using Ibuki, is because of SBO. After SBO he will go back to using Akuma. He even stated, in his opinion, Ibuki was not a tournament level character.

Daigo's Ryu is much better than Momochi's Ibuki at this point. But in terms of skill these players are very closely matched. Momochi is an absolute beast in Japan and has beaten Daigo countless times (perfects and all) with his Akuma. I suspect Momochi will still be maining Akuma but credit to him for giving Ibuki a shot when other players stuck to their Vanilla characters.

@26: That's ok, I will explain it to you. SBO = Vanilla SF 4. Momochi wants to partake in SBO, but also wants to learn SSF4. S0 instead of using "SSF4 Akuma" and throw off his vanilla game, he is using Ibuki for Super until SBO is over.

@32 lol so you're just making assumptions then unless you really talked to Momochi. I don't see how playing akuma would "throw off his vanilla game" seeing how Akuma is pretty much the same from vanilla. I guess daigo's game is gonna be off since he's playing with "SSF4 Ryu". NT.

@33: These things were said by Momochi during his 4 hour session that was streamed a couple weeks back. He was playing Ibuki then, and he took some questions.
You clearly do not play Akuma if you believe his game is the same. He took huge hits to stun and damage from certain moves that require changes to his BNB's. Why do you think Tokido ends his BNB on ,non-trippable characters, with a ex dragon punch instead of canceling into shaku. Cause HP shaku does 99 damage now and crap stun.
Dont even get me started on the change to demon flip throw that now eliminates option-selects.
Akuma isn't worse, just different. Thats why Momochi has elected not to learn the "new Akuma" until after SBO.
Yes, I am a Momochi apologist, not that he needs it. He's clearly a top 5 player, don't let todays events cloud your judgement.
Daigo didn't throw fireballs that often in this set because Ibuki can just Ultra 2 or ex neckbreaker. He won off of footsies.

as for this match and this whole tourney this has been setup for daigo to show everyone who is the best if you ask the actual players them selves they will tell you daigo is the best just cause they win and you see it on youtube doesnt mean much... daigo lost in sbo but got a special invite to play the world champ tourney iyo wong ponokooo lol what ever his name is thats because he is at that next level and he won lol bastard! lol then you get all the exhibition matches where its all daigo and who can beat him because he is the guy to beat! but everyone says this and that so he's got pee#d off and done this tourney to final show people! he never looses when its a 1st to something thats when he's at his best! not taking anything away from the other players they are all top level players the best but we will see daigo win this hands down regardless if you've seen some of the players beat him before lol that happens all the time i beat people i know that are better than me doesnt mean im better than them just that match over a 1st to 10 is a different story
i just wished there was a abel player as that match up is pretty hard for ryu... my bet is viper sims cammy and ryu for the semi's all 3 of those match ups are difficult for ryu wish abel was there too lol if anyone can beat daigo its sims! as shown by autoro but that wasnt really a tourney so the levels of seriousness was a bit off but never the less sims is ryu's nemesis more so than viper and abel but still my moneys on the beast! cant wait for this shi.t!!!!!

for those that didnt know daigo is playing in his garden! with no plugs or sockets???? wtf!!!! lol
I almost don't see the point in playing a fireball character anymore since you can't throw them at like half the cast. It basically gives your opponent to run away as he/she pleases and attack when he/she sees fit. Because of this, the majority of these matches ran down to under 20 seconds.

Good solid play by both players. Daigo turtled the heck out of Momochi. There was a few rush downs by Daigo but zoned throughout the matches. Hibiki's vortex was not really effective especially when the other player knows how to avoid it upon wake up. One of Hibiki's combo does not take off much damage. It needs to be done 2x or 3x to add up damage. Not worth trying to do when your opponent knows how to avoid it after one vortex combo.

I love mamochi and respect daigo, but im dissapointed i watched this video. After Daigo had won 5 straight, I thought "oh well..........this Ibuki is downloaded..*sigh*"
Its was just a strain to watch, I almost didnt make it through the whole vid. I really like Momochi and hate that he lost that bad.
Oh well, it is Daigo, I didnt expect Momochi to win, but I really wanted to see a good Ibuki break down Daigo and his Ryu.

Great match btw. The score doesn't show it but Momochi held it pretty close every round. I would have liked to see Momochi play his Akuma though. But I agree that Daigo can pull off clutch wins effortlessly. That's what makes him a top tier player and not just a great player.
sorry guys, ryu is so OP, take a look a 14:50 in the fight. 1 combo at the beginning of the round took about 45% of Ibuki's health, she started the round in a huge deficit. He is just too safe and has too many way to deal LARGE amount of damage.
He's overpowered.
Why do people have a obsession with the word overpowered? OP IS NOT the same as generally good/decent. Almost every character has a combo that can take off more than 35% life. It was Momochi's fault that he left such a big opening for Daigo to score. I personally like Momochi and wanted him to win but he seriously got out-footsied.

Daigo said himself that the contestants have to use the character that they are most skilled in. Momochi is more skilled with Ibuki than Akuma? I think not.
of course it momochi's fault for jumping into to that, but thats harsh harsh punishment for 1 miscalculation. that one combo totally mindfuhked momochi, he played defensive cause he couldnt take another series of hits like that. another ryu advantage. I like momochi but i knew he had no chance. I would like to see the beast vs sako's ibuki. that would be awesome.
At the level Daigo plays at, you need to pick a high or top tier character, or go home.

ryu is not op he is just an all round solid char that can deal with any char but to play him at the level daigo does takes mad skill... how many other top JAPS do you see using ryu??? hmmm not many at all... do you really think the JAPS are sitting there saying damn ryu is op! lol no they dont every char has tools to win just depends on the style of char you wish to use... daigo is an exception he's like some god tier player very scary! if you take him out of the JAPS you wouldn't see a top ryu player... real talk!

People calling out Daigo dickriders and fireball spam are probably just Momochi dickriders in disguise. Every round Daigo won was rushdown. That pity 3rd game Momochi won was by laming out with air kunai. I don't have a problem with either, a win is a win, but it's a stupid argument.
Ryu isn't overpowered in the sense of his stuff being too overwhelming to deal with, the usual meaning. He's overpowered in the sense that he's *never* at a disadvantage. Regardless of what some mistaken people say, even post-nerfing there is no character the opponent can pick to make a good Ryu user go "Oh crap!". Most characters have distinctive weaknesses, weaknesses that certain other characters are ideally placed to exploit, thus creating a bad matchup (Seth vs. Zangief being an infamous example). But not Ryu. Ryu has no weaknesses. Ryu is always a great choice, facing *anyone* as an equal or better. You can deny it until the end of time, and you'd certainly be right if you said there's no point to whining about it, but it's true nonetheless.
so there's a godlike cammy, a sim that beat mago, daigo, and uryo probably beats makoto(kinda sad to admit, but uryo is good). Of all 4 players, daigo's ryu only has an obvious character advantage against cammy. If I was a batting man, URYO probably takes this whole thing

Guess you've never played a good Sim or Bison. Those characters with their new buffs destroy Ryu.
momochi couldnt use akuma cuz tokido was already using akuma and his bp was higher than momochi's akuma. So he had to pick another character. He wouldn't have played in this tourney if he didn't ibuki or some other character the other players didn't pick already.
I am with 79# on this one i am a Guy player and i like Guy.He feels good when i play as him.But if you've ever switch charecter.It's just i am a guy player and i wanted to try some ryu one day 10sec after the match started i felt the power man lol.Not just the power but a big difference.Between him and Guy and lot of the cast of ssf4.But the question is,is he op well if you can beat him no but i just feel a lot of his setup or to safe thats all.I mean what can go wrong when ryu score a knockdown don't know bout you but me i am scared when he scores one for real lol. with option select and the fact he can beat clk tech pretty simple now thats power.
I like Daigo more out of the two - but even I can admit that things could have very well gone differently had Momochi used Akuma.

I don't see how Ryu having predominantly 5-5 matchups makes him overpowered. Overpowered is when a character has predominantly 7-3 matchups or something. To say that this game was built in such a way that every character was meant to have a "counter-pick" option is ridiculous... ideally, every character is 5-5 with each other. It just never works out that way in practice. Ryu is top tier though, no mistaking it and in part because of his even matchups, but being top tier doesn't make a character broken. Also as somebody said there ARE counterpicks to Ryu anyway...
At the pro level there is a pretty fair variety of character selections going across the top to middle tiers (unlike Smash where middle tiers -get their own league-), and I guarantee you it isn't because they are salty whiners like so many people here who just think "Ryu is for scrubs" etc. The fact that Valle can't beat JWong and he just lost to Marn's Dudley should be some evidence of that. Or the fact that Daigo has no Ryu equal in Japan (or anywhere). You'd think if Ryu was so incredibly cheap, somebody would step up. Who knows how many countless above average Ryu players get hosed during qualifiers by people like Mike Ross playing a character like Honda.
Saltyness. This community is filled with so much salt it's gonna give itself a heart attack someday. It's probably just because people can't deal with losing 1v1, it gets too personal, gets to their ego. So they need to make excuses for themselves. Standard defensive mechanism.

@94 It's fairly obvious that you're a troll now, but if for some reason the point of VegaBisonAbel's post actually flew right over your head, then you should know that he was being sarcastic and purposely mocking you. It's not like Ryu has a million 7-3 mathups or something like that. Most of his matchups are 5-5. You know what that means? That means that if you're generally a better player than a Ryu player, odds are, you'll beat him, regardless of how "overpowered" he is. Sure, Ryus is top tier, but being top tier does not always mean overpowered. Nearly every fighting game has characters that have no bad matchups. Does that mean all those characters are overpowered? Stop complaining about him and learn to play against him.

Your earlier point is correct, that he doesn't really have a counter pick. Most of his match-ups are 5-5. On the same token, that means you shouldn't feel threatened by someone using Ryu. Heck I don't. I don't crap my pants when someone plays Ryu. I feel I'm going into a fair fight, and kudos to them if they beat me.

not saying ryu isn't good just not broken! i agree some things for better for ryu but his dp on anti air is harder to hit without trade can be done but takes more skill rather than in vanilla but his biggest nerf was his super trap but that was fair to take out, if you look around in top level play i wouldnt say there was a bag of ryu's a few but not to the point where he is broken if he was he would be picked all the time by pro's... ryu can get lucky wins but that only against so so players play a good player and most ryu's crumble this game is more determined by skill not character real talk!!!!
