I'm not surprised. Seeing as E3 was all about this Motion Control crap, and the 3DS nonsense, MvC3 was one of the few actual games that were shown. No Metriod the Other M, no Last Guardian (aka ICO 3), only a trailer for MGS Rising, and Shigeru Miyamoto making a complete fool out of himself with that Zelda demo. The only other games worth noting from E3 this year was Twisted Metal, Deux EX, Portal 2 and MvC3. (I'd add Halo Reach, but after the overrated FAIL that was ODST, I have no hope for it. Although I've never liked Halo so make of that what you will).
I'm a little confused about labeling MK9 as fresh too.
Super moves, making it 2.5D after SF4's success, EX moves, more combos, and partner Tag ins. They basically cherry-picked popular features from other Capcom fighting games and shoe-horned them into this one.
Yeah, fresh isn't the word for stealing popular features from other recent games.
Not going to lie, it does look fun and I'll be watching updates on it.

1. THawk is clearly Strider's alt (or atleast, it's really, really possible that he is)
2. There is absolutely NOTHING in the new MK game that hasn't been done better. That being said, it still looks like an interesting game

This is the first 2D MK game since '96. That's 15 years ago! OFC this is fresh. Get that through your thick skull. Have you even seen the gameplay footage? Not just the trailer, the actual gameplay footage. There's two videos on youtube.
It's also clearly obvious you are extremely bias, therefore makes your argument void.

That's all been done before, the only difference is that they have that new X ray hit mode which is basically like gray damage dealing.

a cast of Marvel characters who haven't been in an actual fighting game.
I'm sorry but freshness award goes to MVC3 even if it dose look like TVC(which while you have your opinions I don't think it dose).
MK9 dose play on Nostalgia factor but is basically what Street fighter 4 did(2.5d characters, new moves, 3D plane finishing moves and of course having a cast filled with mainly old favorites and none of the newer faces past the last one from the mid 90s). Freshness has been offically killed when you think about it that way. You can be hyped and call it a breath of fresh air from these tame(no gore) fighters but calling it fresh(unless talking about just the franchise) as in new isn't accurate and that's not an opinion.
MVC3 has a bigger appeal and can be more fresh mainly cause people can see characters from the marvel comics(Deadpool, Thor and Daredevil) and people from Capcom (Nathan 'RAD' Spencer, Dante and Hidemitsu Samanosuke Akechi) fight it out. while MK fans will want basically the MK2 cast give or take a few guys
