Devastation 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona has finished up. DJWheat, Slasher and crew were back providing one of the best live streams you're going to see in the community, yet again.
Well to be fair the production booth (and production crew) are on a whole different scale compared to Evo ('09 and especially '10) which adds to how big the event looks.
And to be honest that's a very important factor considering you can fit more people into watching your stream than fitting them into your actual event.
Where can we watch the luive stream of this mythical so-called "tournament"?
side note...
Anyone know if this is real???
http://www.dasreviews.com/e3-2010/mar...
If so I'm hella disappointed.
Oh, I'm an idiot. My Ad-Blocker didn't let me see the stream. It would be nice to point these things out in the title though, when you post these kind of topics. Just a little reminder for fools like me.
lol @the planted "Devastation bigger than EVO?" comments. Nice try Devastation staff :)
I'm sure it's bigger except that big name players that don't go, average payout and entries just like any regional. Sh*t looks like yet another 400game kitchen sink anime con. Shout out your fave game and they are like Sure bra, we play that too!
I'm always a proponent of the idea that many games should gather together during large tournaments, and the more genres they span, the better.
The lineup looks like it favors fighting games, but I really like that it can stand side by side with FPS, sports games, and rhythm games. There's something for everyone (except maybe RTS/DotA)!

That's the first VOD, use the "More from djWHEAT" below to scroll to the start. They are all in chronological order (descending from latest to first).
Again I'm not sure these are the official VODs but these are the auto-ones you can save on UStream.
Pretty good quality regardless. :p
Question, I'm watching the Soul Caliber matches and I heard someone say that SC4 has some balance issues. Out of curiosity, anybody know the tier list for this game. Whose good, whose bad?

What exactly is Justin Wong doing with Ultimate Gamer (Im not familiar with it)? Wouldn't it be better for them to film him winning this tourney?
sso ninjacw went all the way from maryland to join this tourney...good showing though at top 8, he's not beating filipinochamp's dhalsim

All the finals VOD's will be at http://www.djWHEAT.blip.tv right after their over, and then we'll get to yesterday's SSF4 matches later today. Starting soon!
Its good to see that Guy and Makoto, Who are considered low tier, represented in the finals. This is why it was too early to speculate about tiers.
Needs more time I think before we can get a more sensible tier list.
@41
I agree, i use Makoto right now, and ive never thought that she was bad.
Also on rant, what the frek is up with ustream and the freaking ads. So freaking annoying. The whole screen will stop, then i will see ads by google, and I cant watch the vid.
so freakign stupid.
@Firegod download the Ad block plus add on for FireFox. Blocks every ad that you can think of.
Please keep in mind that advertisements pay for the websites and streaming services this community and others use.
Those ads are the reason most things are free on the internet, so when you're blocking them, you're preventing some of the revenue that helps these people (and this website) keep going.
You can of course do as you wish, but remember, even if they're annoying, those ads are an important part of the web and if you're blocking them it's going to hurt the sites you regularly visit.

Ok, those were some really good matches, especially Marn vs JB, but I have a question: has everyone forgotten about the King of Muay Thai? The Legendary Tiger? All these tournaments I've seen since Super came out, I haven't seen anyone pick Sagat. Does everyone think that he is that nerfed that badly that they think he sucks now? Come on, Sagat may of been nerfed, but he's still like the best character in this game, I don't think here's a reason anyone shouldn't pick him. And further more, that IPW tier list is stupid. Rufus, is the best character in this game? Screw that, if Kelly or LI Joe was at that tournament, Marn probably wouldn't have won (although, if any of you who are DSP fans we'll look up that EC throw down vid from last year were Marn beats LI Joe using Rufus vs Joe's Sagat to win the whole thing, but that's not the point, it just that it seems everyone is dismissing Sagat right now for no reason, and calling Rufus the best character in this game, which is total bull carp.)
And another thing, it isn't like Sagat is in the tournament and losing. I'm just not seeing him at all, maybe like one person is picking him in the whole thing, but that's it. The games been out long enough that I think I would be seeing a lot more of him by now. Ok rant over.
The characters may be low tier but the players are anything but low tier. Seriously.
@ benjee
So, Sanford Kelly, LI Joe, Emblem Lord, and Mago (excuse me if I missed spelled that) DON'T have skill?
No one played Sagat because no one in West Coast played Sagat in SF4 and they are not going to start now. Well, there is Floe but he is playing Rufus now so you know what's up with that.
That was a great match between players in ssf4 tourney. Good game between Alex Valle and Marn.
RPGsFTW, no Guilty Gear matches were recorded but there was like only 3-4 teams for the whole tournament. Kinda like there was only 3 people showing up for KOF12. So they didn't bother recording those. I think it's a pity too, would've liked to see them regardles.
As for the tournament as a whole it was simply awesome. A lot of nail-biting matches in every game. Especially liked the finals in SC4, T6 and SSF4. I wish they'd pick their commentators more carefully though. Nick Paldino needs a whole lot more experience as a commentator AND as an SF-player. I was cringing almost in every match because he was spewing nonsense all the time. At least djWheat acknowledged his own lack of knowledge and carefully tried to make conclusions from what he saw. Nick on the other hand just brainfarted in every match all the way to the end.
For example, near the end of SSF4 Swoozie (who hadn't been on for the whole time) made an observation of Mike Ross whiffing his command throw constantly from fullscreen. NONE OF THE THREE COMMENTATORS KNEW WHY. Whiffing specials to build Ultra is friggin' basic knowledge and Nick was like "DERP I kinda knew about that but whiffing builds meter less so I don't think Mike is whiffing those for that. I think it's more for a positional advantage." Goddamn man...
They were also praising Valle's execution when Valle was missing his stuff LEFT AND RIGHT and he admits it. These are totally understandable mistakes by wheat and Swoozie because they just don't know and got someone else specifically for this. Nick, however, was the wroooonng choice. He knows how to talk, he just doesn't know what he's talking about. So sad.
@ JohnJohnson #50
Rufus was already top tier in SF4 and didn't really get any significant nerfs, instead he got U2 which is considered to be one of the best ultras in the game. This makes him at least top 3 considering that 3 of the 4 above him in vanilla got nerfed (Ryu, Sagat, Akuma).
And yes Sagat got a lot of nerfs and is no longer best in game but I agree, he is still good and certainly one of the better characters. I think the reason why players drop him is because they are used to Sagat being the best and think he is crap because they are comparing to vanilla Sagat and not the other characters in the game.
@ #1
I doubt it'll ever be bigger than EVO, since most people consider it practice mode for EVO. I love how huge it is though, gives you butterflies for how big EVO is going to be!!
Phenomenal results from these guys, I'm excited to see what'll happen at EVO.
Dreamshack is a little old place where we can get together~
No offense Marn, but you have some serious problems speaking in public. Should take 5 sec to think of something instead of saying some random stuff. His shoutouts compared to Alex were so lol. But then again, playing games all day doesn't make you a better person.
Uses to be a Sagat mainer, but dropped him because I refuse to accept that tiger knees do same damage as a light jab/kick (not counter). They have less priority too (can be countered)
Also tiger uppercuts, projectiles do less damage so I'm not surprised people don't use him on tournaments. You can't just whore it out like in vanilla now it takes skill to beat good players unless it gay 1-10 match-up like vs Zangief/T.Hawk
@ free1up you should have seen the pools they were in surprised really good players were everywhere.
Magical head butts should have won the fps cod tourney lol
@Kurdijef, thanks, I was wondering about that. I also didn't know there was KoF12 there, haha. I would've enjoyed watching that.
Glad to see Marn go Dudley in the end. No offense to Valle, but I've never really been impressed with a Ryu, unless it was 3rd Strike, MAYBE.
@JohnJohnson Sanford used Sagat in ECT, Joe uses Sagat, and they both got beat. He's not a very interesting character, and if with all the changes made, everyone else seems a whole lot more fun, not to mention a lot of people are trying to work on new characters as no one else has shown their potential, it's always very tempting to be the "first" or "best" with someone no one sees coming. Sagat is still used, I don't think Sanford will stop playing him, or Joe for that matter but he's just not as good so people are quickly dismissing him.
Been only paying attention to the scene for a little while good to see Marn win the big show. He gets out of the Empire...now he's with the Evil Geniuses...and then wins?! It would be dope if he's been holding back this whole time...and now he's going to take off...I like rooting for the underdog. Get it Marn!
Interesting. No Akuma players. Akuma rarely seems to be used in American tournaments or rarely cuts into the finals. What's the story there fellas?
The only Akuma I see in US tournies these days in Sanford Kelly and even then its almost a coin flip as to whether he'll actually choose him as he seems to use a variety of characters. The other 'known' US Akuma player to me is Ed Ma though I'm of the assumption he's not playing much if at all these days.
#74 I strongly agree. Nick is god awful. When he's not giving false information he's stumbling over and over his own words barely able to speak them clearly. Someone get this guy out of commenting.
Rufus is the best character in the game now cus if you look at his matchup chart his worst matches are ones were he goes even in thanks to U2, he beats most of the cast now.
Sagat is still good cus he really dosent have bad matchups, he just goes even with everyone and you cant whore him out like in vanilla. I expect to see a resurgence of Sagats maybe after EVO. But right now the Bison and Guile army are going strong.
Ryu isnt top 3 anymore cus there are better characters then him now. In Japan Vanilla Ryu wasnt considered by many top 3 because he was to linear and you knew all his tricks. He couldnt surprise you with anything and especially now that he got nerfs for Super he isnt considered top 3, maybe not even top 5. He just has to work to hard for damage. I would put Abel, Bison, Guile, and Balrog ahead of Ryu now.
wong lost in ultimate gamer right before they went to china.
I cannot believe how huge this tournament is. How do they accommodate all the games? Is there a picture of the venue?
By all predictions this tournament could become bigger than EVO in a year or so.
