After checking out this video and experiencing Street Fighter: Beginnings End and Street Fighter Legacy, if Capcom were to do another Street Fighter film, which approach would you want them to take?
promo for a game i hear.. not an actual movie. although it would be nice..
In other video game to movie new, a rumor is going around the Jessica Simpson is going to play Samus Aran in Uwe Bolls Metroid. Food for thought.
By the way, why isn't a real movie. It's not a true adaption of the MK games, but by the way is was put together, I'd say it be a pretty good movie.
GET OVER HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sub Zero vs Scorpion
one of the best rivalries in gameing
OMG this is fu*king epic news! I REAALY like the approach to take the setting into a non-fantasy real life world.
Also, the story is awzum! Scorpion as main actor is just the best idea ever, since he's the most facinating character. Even the feud with sub zero is gamestory based. <3 <3 <3 <3 CAPCOM LEARN FROM THIS! They seem to know how to make a game movie.
Confirmed chars:
Baraka, Raptile, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Jonny Cage (dead), Shang Tsung. And i beat we'll see many of the cast in that tournament.
Currently, I'M HYPED!
I agree with every #9 said if Capcom is going to make a movie they better follow MK lead
omg i wanna see that. Im glad they killed
johnny in the beginning. I don't like him.
this is pretty damn epic. i love the way they eliminated the supernatural aspect and made it seem so... possible. even the "lesser known" details about scorpion killing the older brother of sub-zero in the first MK game and showing up to MK2 made it in here. also, the mention of scorpion's real name and clan, very nice touch IMO. most people just know about the main plot he is involved in, scorpion was killed by sub-zero and want's him dead... i cant help but wonder if they will incorporate quan chi being his real killer into this.
Holy sh*t... that was awesome.
These directors need to realize that going 'darker' is the way to go. Nolan rebooted Batman not by an amazing plot/script... because it was dark and cynical.
SF is too comical to go this route, but I'm glad to see MK is going back to its true self.... Hopefully the game will be 2D.
@f1ip Mouse plinking for the win!
Anyway, I think if video game films are ever going to be good they have to take a different approach than they've tried before, and this is the kind of approach.
While I don't think a future SF film should be this gritty, if that's the route they have to take to make it good, DO IT. Having the right talent and people behind things makes all the difference.
As someone else said, whomever is the studio doing this, they should be hired by Capcom to finally give us a real SF film.
@19
Warner Bros bought out Midway
and heres a screen cap of Sub-Zero
Warner bros know how to make movies.
Mortal Kombat needs to make its come back soon! specially with fighting games making such a big hype.
Mk vs DC was just terrible.
MK's known for violence, so I think the gritty direction suits it well. Hard R rated films are usually trash, but so far this looks decent.
Street Fighter to me would be better off as a film about the personas, not about flashy stuff(sure have cgi fireballs and the like, just don't make it the everything in the film). And how Capcom was able to leave the story for every character pretty loose to let a lot of different attributes possible in each character, it would be very cool.
Like take Sagat.
In say, a trilogy, we can be introduced to a horrible human being like he was in SF1/Alpha then see him grow into something better by the end of the 3rd film. What was anger and hate changed to friendly and happyness. Or he could still be a douche.
They could have it like two sides of a coin. Ryu - unkown in the world turns to world champion, he signifies all that is good. Sagat, once considered best in the world loses to some mope, he represents the worst in the world. Like, it shows the two possibilities of what could happen to anybody, being clean or being dirty.
And that's just from the Sagat/ryu plot.
Then there's the Akuma/Gouken struggle for Ryu.
There's so many opportunities, not from what has been said about the characters, but from what can be said.
IT IS NOT a preview for the movie. It's just an 8minute short film/concept film to test the waters of a possible movie that may or may not contain the same actors/plot elements/etc as the short film. Movies can go through multiple entire re-writes.
I knew something was fishy when the pictures for the harlequin fetus/Reptile were ripped straight from common Internet pics. (Harlequin fetus used to be one of those "shock-you" memes that floated around the internet.)
Besides, when's the last time you saw an 8min trailer? And the plot of the short film flowed so well it couldn't have been spliced together from movie scenes.
it's definatly the move:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293429/
Mortal Kombat: Devastation
Coming out 2013
MK games have been garbage since MK3, but I have to admit this clip looks pretty good.
Problem is, IMO SF characters and "history" (if you can call it that) just doesn't lend themselves too well for this kind of more realistic-darker approach. I'd love someone could prove me wrong and do a good SF movie but I just don't see it happening. So bottom line is, if I'd want to watch a fighting game movie I'd probably watch a new MK movie, if I'd want to play a fighting game I'd play SF, to each its own.
I don't see the relevance, really. This video is brilliantly done, but it's Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, apples, oranges. If I'm supposed to be deciding if I'd like a Street Fighter film done like this, the answer is no, a super-dark Street Fighter wouldn't do the games justice, nor would a Street Fighter without the anime-type elements. Personally, I don't think a real Street Fighter film would work with live action, full stop. Beginnings End was great and all, but the series is just too unrealistic for a realistic look.
I could understand how people who aren't avid MK fans could enjoy this clip, but truth be told, removing the supernatural elements from MK would be pointless and wrong. It's a bloody fantasy series.
And don't say that MK is about Fatalities. That's not the game's essence, that's the game's gimmick.
This is cool! Looks like something I would love to see. I think it is also cool that the guy from "Why did I get Married" and a bunch of other Tyler Perry films is playing Jax!
As for what route the next Street Fighter film should take, personally think MK can pull this level of violence off because it was this violent from the jump. It would be something unexpected, yet ill received in the case of SF!
It's going to be a movie.

If you saw the video, you would know the clip was confirmed to be a short. It was suppose to be a proposal for a new movie.
Let's pray that never happens.
Moving canons from one medium to another has historically always been a stupidly bumpy road. It took Hollywood 20-30 years (If you count the 1989 Batman, after which there was a notable gap) before they were able to produce a truly good comic book movie, and another 20 years before they were able to consistently produce good comic book movies. It's a fact that certain elements just work better in one medium (comics, books, audio, film, tv, etc etc) than others. It's also a fact that you tend to piss off a ton of people when you go completely non-canon when making the jump from one medium to another.
Hollywood just needs time to hit the sweet spot for converting videogames into movies. This looks like it could be a fairly good step in the right direction, although it'd alienate people who consider themselves MK purists. Street Fighter really hits this issue, largely due to the signature over-the-top moves and special moves which really punctuate the series, and how silly they appear when you put them on the big screen.
The big thing that the comics revolution in movies had going for it is that film studios woke up and realized that adults love comic books too, and it's ok to make comic book movies that aren't aimed at 13 year old boys. Eventually they'll come to the same realization about video games, and work out the kinks, and we'll see good video game movies. Most real fans of SF know how silly the canon is overall, but also appreciate character development and decent plot devices more than we'd appreciate silly jokes and over-the-top special effects that don't even make sense (SF:The Movie). SF could have one decent movie made based on it, but I think they'd need to go a little darker than where they're at lately (SF: the Movie and Chun Li), but not near as dark as the MK short.
You could have a convincing movie following Ryu with Ken, Gouken, and Akuma as supporting characters with Chun Li, Guile, Charlie, and Bison as the side narrative. All of those are potentially good stories that could be shown with some grit without seeming out of place, but still be captivating.
@#33 his michael jai white an hes a servent for action movies first (spawn, universal soilder undisputed kill bill black dynamite an many others.) he does tyler perry movie to pay the bills.
yes yes..like the whole scorpion going to kill everyone plot(if that is a plot), but i like it
@ #32 - i think its a nice change to the plot. i would LOVE to see an MK game with a story line like this. something with this story, with 2D gameplay and 3D graphics, flowing like an updated MK3 (the engine is good but shows its age) would be just the thing to reboot MK and make it a competitor again.
i can see how someone might not like the changes, but you wont please everything. i'm an avid MK fan, hell i thought armageddon was GOOD. but i like the changes.
@44
Ah come on. Despite how he looks, his character acts really close to Baraka.
if they did a movie based on sf4 the combat would suck. It would just be footage of two people crouched in opposite corners waiting for someone to attack.
that looks reallly REALLY good, shame the games for MK have seriously gone to crap now :\
as for street fighter im not sure, i think if theyl make a movie for it it should be like the anime street fighter 2, it should be mature not holding back for the kiddi audience (lets face it majority of the fans for sf were kids during the ninetndo days we want street fighter to grow up with us :P), maybe something like kill bill style wise.
as for a plot i think it should avoid having chun li or rye/ken as the main characters. and please! not guile again lol. think if the main character was someone like sagat it would work, cause hes not evil but hes not good, he would break arms and kick heads off and not hold back etc.
the fight choreographer from Undisputed III: Redemption Larnell Stovall did the action scenes, awesome trailer and got good hope for whatever is coming.
Well, that was worth an eyeroll. Mortal Kombat is about an interdimensional invasion, with cartoonish characters and equally cartoonish violence. A "realistic" MK is a little hard to swallow...if it's realistic, one person with a rifle could defeat the whole cast, and if it's not, then why the pretense of getting away from the game's overall feel? There's no dramatic core to MK to make the suspension of disbelief worth it...the games were for kids who liked to watch the showers of pretend blood and guts and Babalities and such. Yes, there are filmmakers who cater to those sorts of viewers, but I certainly don't want to see them taking themselves seriously. I like Jeri Ryan and dearly hope she has enough money saved up to be comfortable saying no if they offer her the chance to put on that ridiculous Sonya Blade costume and glower and grimace her way through something like this. But no worries...if someone is making trailers for pretend movies on YouTube, it means he already failed to drum up investors via the normal means.
If there were another Street Fighter film, I would expect it to be animated. This allows the preservation of the stylized character designs and for most of the fighting to be classified as "cartoon violence." Expect emphasis on the magic-type impossible moves, because these are not imitatable and thus don't aggravate the ratings board. (To make any money at all, they would want to keep it to a PG rating, like the 2007 TMNT motion picture.)
I won't waste words explaining what I'd do if tasked with turning the Street Fighter property into a serious dramatic film, because no one will ever pay for this to happen anyway and it would have to be so freely adapted that it would satisfy no one from the built-in audience. I would advise anyone truly interested in that kind of project to generate his own IP.
Sadly, its not a movie :*( http://twitter.com/JeriLRyan
Jeri says it was a short film made by the director to pitch an idea to WB for a full movie.
i hope they dont take too much of the powers away... it would be like street figther movie without a hadouken...
mortal kombat is not based on real life.. they have abilities.. for gods sake.. if all they do is fight hand to hand.. it wont be mortal kombat
and if they dont have subzero doesn't ice powers it will suck
anyways this mini looks freakin awesome
are you kidding me?!
seriously!?
ok, I'll say this, the movie itself looks good BUT..WHAT THE F*CK IS IT WITH THEM ALTERING THE STORY!!? BARAKA IS NOT A FREAKIN SURGEON!!
So okay, if you make another street fighter movie I think i speak for everyone when I say "DONT!!"
or
Make it faithful to the comics...
I don't know about the rest of this short film—or the rest of the Mortal Kombat franchise after Ultimate 3, for that matter—but the idea of Reptile being a serial killer freak who has that harlequin fetus disease and eats people's heads, I think I'm OK with this.
even mortal kombat has iconic moves and special abilities.. i would feel cheated if it showed none of them.. instead just them as regular martial artist.... or brawlers
Some people don't understand the concept of a "re-imagining". Sure the characters aren't 100% accurate to their game counterparts, but their core aspects are there. Jax and Sonja being partners, Baraka's "claws", Scorpion and Subzero's relationship and background. All of it is there, just told differently and with differing origins. A full on MK adaption (or Street Fighter for the matter) simply wouldn't work as a live-action film without an insanely large budget. This more realistic take on it is the BEST way to do it, IMO, without embarrassing the source material. That's not to say that there wouldn't be any mystical elements to the series. Simply looking at Scorpion and Sub-Zero's eyes shows that at least some unrealistic elements are there. It's just a concept pitch, but I seriously hope it gets turned into a movie. Besides, I like the idea of Scorpion being the lead character. He's the most popular and fleshed out character of MK. It's about time he got his chance to shine, and show that he's not an "evil" character despite his in-game appearance.
Oh my God you elitist cry-babies.
STOP WHINING ABOUT THEM MAKING IT "REALISTIC".
First of all, it's NOT 'realistic.' At all. It's actually still kind of campy, it's just different and WELL DONE. Also, I grew up playing the hell out of MKII like any of you here who happen to be over 17, and frankly I don't really give a damn if they aren't 100% faithful to canon. Because guess what?
The MK canon SUCKS.
Second of all, they're [maybe] making a movie based on the CHARACTERS, and what's most recognizable and iconic about them. NOT stupid cheesy magical MK story points that nobody cares about anymore. Anything that is iconic to the characters, they will work in, but with a new and interesting twist, as they've shown in this excellently put together 8 minute short film.
@ irrenman
"I like Jeri Ryan and dearly hope she has enough money saved up to be comfortable saying no if they offer her the chance to put on that ridiculous Sonya Blade costume and glower and grimace her way through something like this."
I don't know about you, but I didn't see one 'costume' in the whole short, unless you count baraka's doctor getup. Who says ANY of the characters would don their video-game attire? I like how you immediately jump to conclusions to smugly write the project off.
Again, stop taking the film so DAMN SERIOUSLY, people. Yes, it's dark, and yes it's gritty, but this is not Shakespeare, it's Mortal Freakin' KOMBAT. They're not asking you to take it seriously, they're just asking you to be ENTERTAINED. Lighten up a little...
As for how this all relates to SF....I don't think SF needs to be dark at all. The characters were not created with that theme in mind, whereas the MK Universe, while campy, is still pretty dark and gory. And personally, I think SF works best in animated form. Preferrably 2d. And from Japan.
This is still trash to anyone who knows nothing about Mortal Kombat universe. The references are probably just campy stuff to the public.
What I do like about it is that it made the story more realistic. This made it easier for people to relate and thus enjoy.
In the end, it's not whether it is true to the source or how realistic they made it. What matter most, is that it has to be a good movie. Something previous SF movies have failed at doing.
I dont really get why everyone is freaking out if someone trys to make a movie out of a video game?
Ok it obviously doesnt work with SF, the first movie with Van Damme wanted to include all the special moves of the characters.. ryus hadoken and kens srk are just ridiculous .. and for the main characters, there was no sonic boom from guile or spiral arrow from cammy, or Bison.. omg Bison.. NO psycho power at all.. Thats what Bison is about Oo
Anyway, we already saw that Videogame into movie convertion DOES work.. and i have to say, i really like to watch the Resident Evil movies, all of them. And the games are also sick. It's another genre but still a Movie that was inspired by a Video Game.. there was SOME gamestory in it, but it didnt tried to be 100% accurate and identical with the game and still it's good.
So in my opinion its ok to drift away from the game story a little bit for the sake of a good movie.
I really like Reptile in that short, jaxx and sonya.. meh.. i dont think they're really into the fighting stuff in this "maybe-movie". But i dont get how they want to explain Sub Zero or Scorpions abilities.. I mean Scorpion is an assassin with gimmicky stuff. But Sub Zero? We saw a picture of him and it looks like he good the same obsession with ice again, but that would be too supernatural and break the flow of the movie :/
Thats what i think so far. I try to be positiv about movies inspired by video games because there were good ones (resident evil) and there were really really terrible ones (far cry..).
PS: sorry for my bad english, not my mothertongue :/

So if they turned Ryu into a detective and Bison into a drug dealer, you'd be an elitist pig to call it foundationally retarded?
That's. Just. Stupid.
If you read the posts, the pattern is clear. People who know nothing about MK think this is a good idea. Well, I'm glad to know that people who don't know MK's basic story are willing to throw it away after a nano second of thought.
n00b_saib0t, you're the obvious exception, and since you seem to know what you're talking about, I do respect your opinion. But clearly that can't be said for most the supporters here.
Dude the guy playing scorpion is the chinese dudes body guard in the hang over lol
this looks kinda good, dark and gritty is definitely the approach they need to take... only problem with making films out of games is the story... its hard to get a good film story wise without it being cheesy! i dont want to see ken running around in a bright red karate outfit! i dont want to see no city based film... should be filmed in some sort of jungle something like vietnam... i dont want them to try to hard on the story more of a ryu based film trainning to be the best fighter and he meets all the chars... i dont want to see ryu in his dojo outfit in new york city! lol please dont do that! but yes im all for the films just please make it non cheesy!!!! i dont care if the games a bit cheesy cause you sit and play the damn thing but a movie needs to be authentic original and gritty! my thoughts only
but yes this looks good... thank god johnny cage dies early cause he looks like one cheesy actor! cant stand cheese unless its on toast! toasty! lol sub zero looked good... and reptile
@ #65 - i wouldnt go so far as to say the MK canon sucks, i mean, how many other franchises can just open a portal in the story and bring back dead characters? the MK3 invasion opened a portal bringing back the dead (per johnny cage's continuity between MKT and MKG), the dragon king did the same thing (MKDA) and again with blaze (MKA). if that isnt the worlds greatest way to make canon games with every character in the series, i dont know what is. its certainly better than "he was sleeping for a few years".
A third film is currently in the development stage with a tentative release date of 2010. After having read the script, Ed Boon has stated that the upcoming movie will be more of a reboot than a third sequel, as had been previously believed. A possible trailer has appeared on the internet showcasing Michael Jai White as Jax, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, Matt Mullins as Johnny Cage, Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion and Lateef Crowder as Baraka. Kevin Tancharoen directed the short and Larnell Stovall choreographed the fight scenes [65] Jeri Ryan revealed that the short was made for the director to pitch the reboot to Warner Brothers.

Elitist if I've ever seen it. How much do YOU actually know about the MK universe? See, MK is quite convoluted and mixed up. Especially with the recent games. I know quite a bit about the MK universe and backstory and I find this to be a very very good and fresh idea. No one is throwing away MK's original story, this is a NEW story. And if anyone is throwing the original story away, it's the creators. Armageddon is meant to be the last in the original series. The first two MK movies followed the game's plot pretty closely (MK1 taking place in earthrealm, MK3 Shao Khan invades earthrealm) but look how they turned out. You're not the only one who's a fan of MK, and you're not the only fan who can have an opinion on what's good for the series.
@nOOb_saibOt
I dunno, maybe you were being sarcastic and I haven't caught onto it, but that's not much better at all. Especially doing it multiple times. Sure, it's an excuse to have all the previously dead characters brought back to life, but it's still a horrible plot device. Maybe once or twice it could be stomached, but...come on.
@ #76
I've played every game, read every bio, and seen every ending. I'm not an expert, but I know my stuff.
And yes, they are throwing away the story. Take Reptile for example: what's more essential to his character? That he eats heads, or that HE'S A HUMANOID REPTILE! All they're doing is creating brand new characters and carrying over the names. If you remade Lord of the rings and took out the fantasy elements, all you're doing is creating a new story with all the nominal elements (nominal elements being things like names and contingent plot devices; things that don't really matter).
And although the MK's storyline has consistency flaws, it is by far the most fleshed out and solid story to be found in any fighting game. I didn't buy those games for my health, and frankly, I didn't buy them for the gameplay either.
Though reboot rumors are floating right now, Armageddon was not intended to be the final game AT THE TIME OF ITS CREATION. The problem with MKA wasn't that the story was bad, but that it's vastly incomplete and unanswered for. Recanting it and starting from Deception makes infinitely more sense than a reboot.
I love MK, and I want to see it adapted faithfully before it's transformed into a Saw knock-off. I don't want to see quality art abused and exploited. If that makes me an elitist, then we need more elitists in the world.
go watch the old mk films if u want fancy fantasy sh!t. this approach is the best any game movie has ever seen! it doesnt work if u catch on every detail. THIS is the answer everyone was looking for. a merge between gameplot / chars and new stuff to make it logic and understandable to evreyone while keeping the flair.
and this IS based on the game story. scorpion <> sub zero feud.
look good for a movie I wouldn't mind watching if the airbender looks like it would be a good movie why not this stay gritty and blood and the movie will be good.
Sf movies need Ryu , Ken and Akuma and the storyline need to involve Bison and sagat or something
To start off, in Reptile's first appearances, there was no indication that he was an actual reptile-like creature until later in the series(minus some fatalities which includes eating the head of his victim). Again, you don't understand what a re-imagining is. They're giving the audience a new reason for him being called "Reptile". This is a new direction, and changes things that can afford to be changed. Baraka being a tarkatan and Reptile being a raptor wouldn't fit well into this vision.
If you think that MK has the most fleshed out and solid story among fighters then either 1. You don't know much about MK storyline or 2. You don't know much about the storyline of other fighters. Tekken and Street Fighter both have a much deeper storyline and make tons more sense than anything MK has put out past 3.
"The problem with MKA wasn't that the story was bad, but that it's vastly incomplete and unanswered for"
Thus, the story was bad. Not to mention the other horrible aspects of it. The creators said that they wanted to go in a whole new direction with MK after Armageddon, and they were considering killing off most of the cast for good.
I love MK as well, and whether or not you wanna believe it, we've seen true adaptions of the games. The first two movies fit the games' plots pretty well for the most part...they just sucked. MK doesn't have a consistently good enough story to transfer into a movie. THE best character that MK has(story-wise at least) is in fact Scorpion, and most of his true back story came from sources outside of the games. Not once can I remember his real name being mentioned in-game.
A movie like this would be the best thing to happen to this dying franchise, I guarantee you that. Lol Saw knock off...yea because this is soooo much like Saw.
I HATE HOW EVER MOVIE NOW A DAYS HAS TO BE LOGICAL and BORING. screw the world, screw the times! the 2000's suck! it seems 911 rot everyone brains and made the too serious screw that junk, what a crap movie this will be, just like dragonball evolution, Chun li and all that new movie crap.
@ #81
Regarding Reptile: If you beat the game with Reptile in MK2, they say he is of the Zatterian race.
Yes, I do know what re-imagining is. I'm saying why they shouldn't do it.
Regarding MKA: Yes, they did say wanted to go a newer, darker direction, but this is not just a "new" direction. Street Fighter III would be a new direction. This is switching styles and genres.
Regarding the movies: Let's start with the first movie. Subzero didn't know how to talk. They invented a brother for Liu Kang. Scorpion had a bird shoot out of a vagina inside his hand. Goro got punked in one hit. Scorpion and Subzero WERE ALLIES! The movie had the atmosphere of a shouting-retard.
And Annihilation? It was like the cast of General Hospital was re-enacting Highlander 2: The Quickening.
No dude. These were not faithful interpretations. I can appreciate the first one as AT LEAST one of the more tolerable video game adaptations, but that's not a hard contest to win. Hell, Columbia pictures released a Doom movie and forgot to include demons.
Last but not least, the franchise isn't dying. MKvsDC sold very impressively, and Deception is the best-selling Mortal Kombat to date.
This is awful! Oh my gosh, it's pretty much just disrespectful toward Mortal Kombat. Baraka's a failed surgeon? Reptile has a rare skin-disorder? This is bull-crap! This movie has absolutely nothing to do with Mortal Kombat! It makes no mention of other realms, and keeps magic, a key element to the franchise, hidden away. And why the crap is Johnny Cage dead? Who decided to kill one of the most important characters in the series? And where's Liu Kang? No, man. No. This sucks. I most certainly do not want to see a Street Fighter like this. I can only imagine what kinda BS they'd think up for it.
Yes, it said he was Zateran...but that's just the planet or realm he is from. There was no indication as to what a Zateran really is. As a contrast, Jade and Katana are Edenian.
This is not switching styles and genres. Firstly, would you not agree that a MK movie would involve a tournament and martial arts of some kind? MK revolves around fighting and the tournament, and this clip has both.
Ok about the movies, their overall storyline was very similar to the games. The things you're picking out are just overall design choices, but the core plot was the same. And as for Scorpion and Sub-zero, I think Shang-Tsung's exact words were that they were "The deadliest of enemies, but slaves under my power."
Annihilation's plot was basically that of MK3. Shao-Khan broke the rules of the tournament and decided to invade earthrealm. ALSO animalities were introduced in that movie, and they were also introduced into MK3.
As bad as the movies may had been, they were true adaptations storyline wise.
And yes, MK is dying. MK vs. DC may have sold relatively well, but there was A LOT of dissatisfaction with that game. There is a reason why Midway games was shut down.
I don't care that they went away with the Underworld and other MK details cause they weren't interesting in the first place. This was very interesting. I hope they play off of this when making the film.
Well, I don't know about this (nice) trailer fitting MK's universe or not, but if another Street Fighter movie would hit the screens, I think it should re-take the basis of the game: Street Fighter, "The World Warriors".
No need for a plot with guns and people with ties, the background IS a Tournament. But not like a Kumite or battles on a ring, it should be an open, maybe illegal, Street stuff. All over the world!
Why? Because it is the essence of Street Fighter, with no limit of Fighting art, weight, age, sex, or money to travel the world for a Tournament. But how could a movie explain this? By the fact that looking for the very best warrior in the world wherever he/she is, may be a hunting affair despite warriors's will, - not a invitation affair - and all this ordered by Bison (we all know the reason, more or less ;) ): just imagine fighters not even knowing that they participate to the Street fighter world championship, just believing that they fight against a fool in the streets. Or all the contrary.
There also could be a fan activity in the film, just like what we see for the games: why not amateur films on youtube, rumors on who beat who and how, things like that, 'cause there ARE Stars in Street Fighter's characters: Ken, american rich & handsome super prized fighter; Zangief, russian superstar; Sagat, Muay Thai world champion; E.Honda, Japanese Sumo Star; Fei Long, movie star; Balrog, moneying his fists in Las Vegas; Vega(Claw), a deadly "Bring me meat in my cage" baby-face psychopath signing autographs with his claws; or even Blanka, how about an Urban Legend in Brazil...
There are real Street Fighters too, good or bad, like Ryu (this man don't do competion, guys, he travels on feet, and get known by beating all kind of great fighters, and that's all, doesn't he?), why not Birdie, Alex, T. Hawk, or Final Fight's Cody ;)..
And then another category could be all theses people in a mission, like Guile, Chun-Li, Nash, C.Viper, ♥Cammy♥ (not even knowing who she is at the beginning), people who ARE willing to enter the tournament.
Well, to finish, this Street Fighter movie SHOULD be a heavy fan service to all the SF community, (why not some musical themes, some intros, etc) and what else a good fighting movie with plenty of styles, just like mixing Yp Man's fighting style against Oyama's kyokushinkaï karate, or Lateef Crowder's (seen playing Baraka in that MK trailer) spectacular moves against deadly army martial arts...
SF's a classic, guys!! It deserves its real Classic Movie! MK1 wasn't bad, but there was Christopher lambert ^^.
(pardon my english, I'm french ^^)
I keep seeing people write stupid crap like "It's fine that they're taking out the supernatural stuff cuz it was boring anyway." That is an idiotic argument. The basic storyline of MK:
A mystical god from another universe calls together mighty warriors from Earth, including a man with the blood of a dragon, to fight against an otherworldly emperor who is conquering all the dimensions in order to gain power.
This movie involves no mystical god, no dragon-warrior, no dimension-conquering, no magic, and the otherworldy emperor is now a shady businessman. Mortal Kombat shouldn't be re-imagined to be realistic, cuz it isn't. That's like saying "Oh, I really like Star Wars, but it would be so much better if they took out all that sci-fi crap." The sci-fi crap is necessary, just like the magic here is necessary. Its fine that its unrealistic or campy or whatever, because it always was. That was the intent. And you can't reinterpret characters to the extent that they no longer even resemble themselves. Reptile is supposed to be a literally reptilian man fighting for his dying people, who is only on the side of evil because he's afraid that good won't be able to help him restore his civilization's lives. At what point in that sentence did anyone hear "cannibal with a skin-condition"? He's not even known for eating people! That's what Mileena does, and she apparently will not be featured in this film. Nor will her sister Kitana, despite both of them being extremely important to the series as a whole. It's not that this isn't 100% faithful to the original series, its that its 0% faithful. It isn't the same story, it doesn't have the same characters, its not even the same genre. It went from fantasy series to gritty noir film, and that is ridiculous.
"meh the bank robber doenst wear a sock over his head. i cant approve this, this is not fairthful!"
LEARN TO ADAPDT, STFU and enjoy a pbb good movie. Judge the acual movie itself and not the approach. Dude, this is a FILN not a character bio presentation mixed to a story...
You know, this movie will be seen by many medicore mk fans or even ppl that dont know the game at all. You have to make changes, FFS it's around 90-120 minutes, not a 5 hour presentation of every character + background. You saw what happens if the take the characters and mix them to something that doesnt fit... both sf films, dragonball etc and any other game movie. they suck, cuz they took random characters and made a random story. they didn't turn them into something new, that fits.
@ #95
So turning a half-demon warrior into a disgruntled plastic surgeon is on par with a missing sock?
You say the movie "needs changes," but then why is it that all the other video game adaptations underwent a million changes from their original stories, yet were terrible? It's because producers had no faith in the game's concept but still wanted to use the franchise name to make money.
The MK story is not difficult to adapt. All you need is solid dialogue and good acting and movie makes itself.
The Shot of Sub Zero wasn't actually him. It was actually work someone else had done for an original design that they used.

This is the core problem of videogame translations to film. Videogames are an interactive user experience, and film is a purely passive user experience. Some videogames have great passive elements (plot, etc), but what makes great games great is *always* their gameplay. A good plot is icing on the cake. However, a good movie largely resolves around a good plot because that's the majority of what it can offer.
People who are so hard-core about their fandom for MK didn't love the series because of its plot. The plot was fairly contrived and quite silly at times. They loved the game because of the gameplay and the interactions of the gameplay with the plot. Remove the gameplay, and it's a pretty boring concept. If MK had ass-horrible gameplay, no one would be here defending the plot, because it's really not that good.
In order to successfully translate a canon that has previously primarily been in active media (video games), it needs to shift stuff around (see: plot) in order to be successful in passive media (film).
@ #98 - actually, its wrong. i love the mk storyline and universe, but there is nothing wrong with this plot. its like saying you arent a true xmen fan if you like one universe over the other. this is a great reimagining that can take over now that mk has run its course with armageddon (if it truely is the final game).
@ #77 - no, i was serious. its better than sf's "nah, bison didnt actually die when akuma sgs'd him, we changed our minds" or "gouken was just sleeping, its all good". sf is the better game, but mk is the better story hands down.
i almost missed this...
@ 88 - who decided to kill johnny cage? ed boon did. twice. stfu and lrn2mk. where is liu kang? ask ed boon, he's the one that killed his poster boy, he cant be THAT important now can he?
@ #96
Why? I read your earlier posts, and it doesn't look like we disagree.
Am I missing something?
What idiots who want to make game movies don't realize is that, even if they make a good movie, if to feed their "creative" side all they use from the source material are names, and an overall idea, it's not a movie based on a game, and calling it such is just an advertising scheme to get fans to go watch it. Getting "creative" with source material usually just means some hack script writer is going to butcher a franchise.
If people want an SF movie, or an MK movie, or a video game movie in general it's because they like that series. Really, no one has figured this out? Has anyone made a good true to cannon game movie?
Yea the Jeri Ryan Twitter basically confirms it. It's a totally UNAUTHORIZED UNOFFICIAL short film some random guy did to basically pitch an idea to Warner Bros. Reason Jeri Ryan was in it was because she did it "as a favor to a friend". Makes sense, she only had a 5 second part in it.
#103
Yes, SF retconning their characters back to life is equally bad as using the same plot point to revive characters. When the characters constantly come back to life, it's hard to care about what happens to them. The only ones who should be truly immortal are Raiden and Scorpion, because of their nature, but reviving Johnny Cage, Sheeva, etc over and over again makes the "Mortal Kombat" seem less mortal. DBZ suffers the same fate.
@106
I'm thoroughly convinced that you have no idea what you're talking about.
The trailer is fake,HOWEVER this is only a test video
to sell to the WB to push their idea of the reboot
for Mortal Kombat as it was confirmed by Jeri
Ryan. The video took the characters out
of context and it was too dark. They should
base the reboot off of Mortal Kombat 3. Most
of that took place in the city while staying true to
story.
My apologies for the double post, internet is acting up
@104
This is supposed to be Mortal Kombat II, what with being not the first Shang Tsung tournament and Reptile, Jax and Baraka being around, which means both Liu Kang and Johnny Cage should be alive and well, not to mention main characters. Please don't tell me to learn my MK. I already know it.
I have no idea what all the bantering is about. Although it didn't exactly stick to the original storyline, the "essence" of MK is still obviously present in the film.
This is a good direction. I also think Jarkyttaa and DeathGOD have made valid statements.
@94
I agree with you for the most part, but I'll point out that Reptile did indeed eat people's heads in a few of his fatalities.
@ 106
I agree 100%. You don't even have to add the clause "even if they make a good movie," since I'm pretty sure not a single good movie like that has been made anyway.
I grew up with mortal kombat and street fighter. I own the umk3 arcade machine. Thats how much of a fan I am. I appreciate the history and the story that has been setup in the mortal kombat universe. That being said, mortal kombat needs a face lift. If it takes retooling the characters and story thats fine. I just hope that if this short leads to a game in development, that they take cue from what sf4 has done in going with 2.5d, making it about how the games play, and just start to make things fun again. I haven't enjoyed a MK game since umk3. Once they went 3d it all went sour. I just hope for a better gmae to come out of all of this:)
Funkenstein23, MK2 is the game johnny cage died in.
nothing said its not the first tournament, it just said that shang tsung was holding a tournament called "mortal kombat". but since you know your MK i guess i dont need to remind you that MK1 was the 10th tournament after earth realm lost 9 others, and MK2 was technically the 11th, not 2nd.
i also dont need to bring up that reptile was in the first mortal kombat game since you know everything about the series, right? his existence isnt proof that its MK2 at all.
jax was sonya's partner, he went searching for her when she went missing. he wasnt directly mentioned in MK1, but his story in MK2 cements his spot during MK1, but i guess you already knew that too.
also you said at one point that reptile isnt known for eating people. i'm pretty sure he's eaten part of someone as a fatality in every game he's in (II has head eating, 3 all but the feet, 4 the skin off their face, DA combines the MK4 style acid bath with the MKII head eating, MKA has CAF so thats a no go obviously). but you knew that too, right?
dont go spouting about your MK knowledge when you prove at every turn that you dont know squat about the freaking game. the creator killed cage and liu kang, reptile is known for eating people, MK1 wasnt the first tournament, jax was in the MK1 timeline, and reptile was in MK1. sheesh, you probably dont know that the sub-zero from MK1 is noob saibot and that the sub-zero from MK2 is his younger brother, do you? i'll bet you thought the movie fabricated that as well.
http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/ke...
There's some background info from the guy who made it.
I TRIED A HUNDRED TIMES TO FREEZE FRAME ON SUB ZERO's FACE AND ITS LIKE THEY PURPOSLY MADE IT SO U CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Street Fighter's story needs a facelift. And by facelift, I mean starting from scratch. The storyline needs to be constantly updated with the times like every other comic, movie or tv series if it really wants to go on forever.
Reboot! Reboot! Reboot!
@n00b
Johnny Cage dies at the very end of the game after assisting his allies in winning the tournament. He is killed by one of Shao Kahn's extermination squads. This short has him die before the tournament begins.
I'm well aware that Reptile was in the first game. I took a guess as to which tournament this was, and considering that Baraka is an entrant, and that Jax and Sonya are quite aware of eachother's locations, I'd say its a sound bet.
Mortal Kombat one gives Reptile a fatality where he eats his opponents head, Mortal Kombat two extends this to him eating his entire opponent. These are the last fatalities that feature him eating people. His other fatalities include him spitting acid, in several different fashions, turning invisible and cutting up his opponent, and ripping his opponent to shreds with his claws. Contrast with Mileena who had three fatalities involving eating her opponent, two wherein the whole of the person is eaten, one where its only their head and neck. She also has other fatalities, such as the one with the bottle of nails that involve her mouth in a large capacity, earning her the fan nickname "purple people eater"
^youre about 5 different kinds of stuid. reptile has more than two "eat people" fatalities. first of all, mk1 has him with scorpion's fatality. mk2 he eats their head, mk3 he eats all but their feet. you say thats the last one, in mk4 he eats the skin off their face and in mkda he spits acid on their face, takes a step back, and eats their head mk2 style.
and you cant judge by where they became playable. several characters, baraka included, have been confirmed to have been present for mk1. kitana, milena, shao kahn, chameleon, jax, and ermac, off the top of my head, are later revealed to have been there via their back story. you really know nothing about mk canon, dont you?

new MK Bemu announced.
@127
Shh shh shh. It's okay baby. Everythings gonna be fine. Its an argument on the internet about a fake trailer for a fake movie based loosely on the canon of a series of videogames that haven't been popular since the 90's. Turn down your rage a few decibels and lets hug it out. Okay? Its okay to cry if you want, go ahead and let it out.
Just wanted to comment and say this looks awesome. They need to make this movie!
For those worried that they're going off-canon completely:
"Now like I said, because I am such a fan of the Mortal Kombat series, I know there’s a lot of concern about the mysticism and the special powers and all that kind of stuff. Well, like I said, this is really designed — the short so far is really designed like a prologue to the movie. Now, in a movie version, I am going to have that mysticism there, but it has to be done in a very tasteful way. I wouldn’t like it too campy or too cheesy. I know this is a weird analogy, but it’s the best one I can think of right now."
That's from the director of the short film, and what he'd do if he gets to make a full-length film.
Ooops, wrong link. This one is to the interview: http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/ke...
@129, you're being a hypocrite and he's calling you out and now you're resorting to name calling? You clearly said "And you can't reinterpret characters to the extent that they no longer even resemble themselves. Reptile is supposed to be a literally reptilian man fighting for his dying people, who is only on the side of evil because he's afraid that good won't be able to help him restore his civilization's lives. He's not even known for eating people!"
What he did was hold a mirror to your face showing you what a hypocrite you were being.
@ 129 - you said you know your mortal kombat, i proved you wrong. without being able to prove me wrong, you had nothing to do but accuse me of crying. i just pointed out how stupid you are, nothing more. its really no problem for me, i just wanted you to know that while you're saying people arent true MK fans and dont know the story that you dont know the first damn thing about mortal kombat or its back story. you're a hypocritical sack of crap accusing people who like the changes of knowing nothing about MK when for some of us that just isnt the case (like me). it really doesnt bother me, i dont know you IRL so why should i care if you're a douche bag? answer is, i dont. you clearly do though, thats why you're resorting to posts like that one. i know more about mortal kombat than most people know about themselves, it would be wise of you to research before talking MK in a post i'm viewing because when you're being a douche about it i will call you out (if you're not, a simple correction will suffice).
@134
Dude, chill. Once again, I have to ask, why are you getting so heated? This is three times now you've called me stupid, because of an internet argument over a video game. Why? I hadn't insulted you, or attempted to demean you up until my last post. Why did you feel the need to start?
Regardless my assumption that it was only people who knew little about MK games were enjoying the changes was only made because it seems to make sense. Wouldn't you agree that if something central in say, Batman was being changed, like he wasn't an orphan anymore, that it would be fans who would complain or be unhappy about it? That was the same logic used by me here.
Now, I apologize for my last post, it was clearly immature, but I don't take kindly to being called stupid. I would also like to apologize for the extent to which this argument grew. I clearly fed into it quite a bit more than I should have and it became ugly rather quickly. While I still will have to stand by my opinion of mysticism and the like being central to MK, I will also concede to your opinion to the contrary.
I was not trying to display any douchey behavior, I was only attempting prove my point. I do apologize for coming off that way. I have the tendency to try and be perpetually right, and that tendency tends to show itself in rash speech. So, my honest apologies.
@135: If you read some more stuff about the movie (like the interview linked above), you'd see that the director is interested in keeping the magic/mysticism in the movie, but the short was really meant to be a prologue of sorts before the "real world" and "mystic world" collided.
So did anyone see the new mk trailer look like they are going back to there roots looks pretty good.
@ 135 - its not heated at all. stop pretending i'm yelling and getting worked up. people who go talking trash like you did make my time on the internet fun. you temporarily kelled some boredom for me. and like i said, if you werent being a douche about it the argument would have just been a correction, not me trying to get a reaction out of you for fun.
I liked the fan films for SF that people put together, but this new MK video blows them both out of the water. They're mixing and matching the source material with the film, which seems like an ideal approach too.
You can't put all of the ridiculous plot elements into a movie and make it good, but you can certainly put some of them in and this clip is proof of that.
If I had my way, Capcom should hire this same studio to do the next SF film.
