Capcom's Seth Killian and Christian Svensson fielded a couple of questions, mostly in regards to Marvel vs. Capcom 3, a little ways back on the Unity Boards.I hope you don't include the "popular" characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Those fighters were popular picks because they were overpowered or broken, not because they were characters that people were clamoring for. Also, will high tier fighters in MvC2 be at the same level of strength in MvC3?
Seth: A lot of popular characters (in terms of tournament strength) from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 also happened to be straight up popular characters from the Marvel Universe, which is of course a big part of why Marvel wanted to see them, or why they might want to see some of them back.
You can see the same thing on the Capcom side, with the return of characters like Ryu and Morrigan — they aren't considered tops in MvC2, but, as characters, they're popular with fans. Capcom learned its lesson about dropping too many popular characters for [brand new ones] with Street Fighter 3, so going forward, expect to see new and/or unexpected characters alongside franchise favorites.
With a game this highly anticipated, of course everyone wants more of everything (more returning favorites, more totally new), and in a crazy game like the Vs. series, and with character catalogs as huge as Capcom's and Marvel's, of course there are going to be 100+ characters that *didn't* make it for every one that did. Overall, however, MvC3 mixes favorites from MvC2 plus a very healthy dose of new blood.
The other thing I'll say is that a bunch of characters you haven't seen yet do a great job of really establishing a unique play-style, so when I look at the game less in terms of "is so-and-so in?" and more in terms of "are there a LOT of different, fun ways to play this game?" then I'm really pleased.
As it happens, my current favorite character to play (not yet announced) [Editor's note: This was written before Amaterasu, Thor, Trish, Chun-Li, Super-Skrull and Doctor Doom were announced] would probably be my LEAST favorite character in terms of "did I want to see this one make it into the game?" So basically the fact that I am not a huge fan of the character didn't matter to how much fun I actually have playing them.
Other considerations are that just because someone was in an earlier game, that doesn't mean a lot for how they will play (or how good they will be) in THIS game. Ryu is the same character from SF1, to SF2, to SF Alpha, to SF3, to SFIV, but plays in a very different style in every game, and runs the gamut from top-tier to bottom-tier, all while using different versions of basically the same moves.
The point I'm trying to make is that just because someone was tops in one game doesn't necessarily predict that characters strength in a future game.
Tatsunoko vs. Marvel vs. Capcom ... is this possible?
Seth: I think the shortest answer on this one is "don't hold your breath." As has been pointed out, the licensing alone would probably be enough to keep several law firms in business until the sun dies out.
Can you guys include an option to activate and deactivate the lights and sparks in MvC3? I'd like to be able to see things without the characters sometimes getting obscured.
Sven: We can bring that suggestion to the team. No promises though as that is a pretty wild option to suggest. :)
Can games on Wii be patched?
Sven: No.
What is MT Framework, that powers Marvel vs. Capcom 3 based off of? Is it PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 hardware?
It's a PC-based engine, designed to be easily portable to whatever platform. A pretty smart idea if you don't want to get caught with your pants down when a new console generation comes out. — PKT
Seth: Yep, MT framework is what we call "platform agnostic" which means it's intended to be implemented in a lot of places. [...]

I just want to say that this game still has a little less than a year to come out. With that said, I don't think people should have the right to decide how the character balance is. For instance, I saw the trailers with Amaretsu and Thor with a few comments saying that they are getting the impression that the game will be broken. Well of course you're going to see the character kicking ass, because if they weren't it WOULDN'T be a trailer for that character. It's just used to show off what they can do.
Another point I would like to add is with Super Street Fighter 4. Before the game came out, there was much speculation on the character balance and many worried people who were afraid that there would be a broken system. Some of the specifics I remember were with Dudley; everyone thought him and his target combos were really broken. I even saw people calling the game Super Dudley Fighter 4. That however was not the case.
Another thing was Rufus's 2nd ultra. Many people saw "you can't combo into it, so it sucks," You said that then and now what do you think of it?
All I'm saying is that give it time, they rebalanced street fighter 4 fairly well, so there is hope with this game.

I dunno, I don't think Cyclops is really "popular." At least not on the same level as a lot of the characters in the game
Storm and Magneto, yes
I just hope that there's more "obscure" Marvel picks in the same vein as Dormammu and Super Skrull. I'm fine with some big names (regardless of their tier staus in MVC2) coming back, but I really want a healthy portion of new blood
Posted by MisguidedAngel on July 25, 2010 at 9:47 p.m. #9
I wouldn't even say Storm is the popular... I'd go so far as to say marvel fans in general care more about Night Crawler, Gambit, Beast, and especially Rogue and Phoenix more than they do about storm and especially Cyclops (Who was created to make kids with glasses feel cool ;) ). I'd also put Venom far above Cyclops in popularity...

One thing I would like us MVC2 fans to see is an option for the controls to ease all the control hatred. I would like to see 3(including the new control set up) options.
1. The new simplified control set up (Tatsunoko controls).
2. The Mvc2 control set up.
3. The original fighting 6 button control set up along with the 2 assist buttons making it 8.
In my opinion, I think this would satisfy everyone on the control scheme.
They would have to re-do the control scheme but it would shut alot of people up and satisfy alot.
I'm all for trying new things and adapting if I have no choice but their well aware of Mvc2 being a 10yr old game still going strong and being played on the next gen systems. I'm sure they want Mvc3 to have the same effect but what i'm saying is, don't deviate from those attributes that made it such a great game that can't be put down but instead carry them over and mix it with the new.
I'm sure people with sense can see my point and not the "OMG YOUR JUST A HATER MVC2 NU** HUGGER GTFO" people.

Some characters I would like to see:
Bishop, Sinister, Carnage, Rolento, Dr. Octo, Beast, Blk Spider Man, more characters from dark stalkers, Jin, Charlie, etc.
I'm sure some agree that you can't have Marvel without Juggernaut lol.

One problem would be that the new Tatsu style doesn't have a crouching version of the launcher button. I guess that could be easily changed, but another problem would be that the classic MVC2 and Tatsu setups don't immediately have access to the medium variety of normals offered by the traditional six-button setup. And ANOTHER issue would be special move strength. Tatsu style has three strength buttons that could either mean kick, punch, or anything, with the launcher button being used for a select few specials. Executing special moves would be limited to that setup. Imagine trying to translate Fuerte's dash to a three or four button system. Maybe not that big a deal, but this is the problem that I can immediately see

Beast? Really?
These days I'm out of the loop as far as Marvel goes, but I always figured Storm was at least decently popular since she's basically been in every big Marvel game
I honestly don't know what other new Marvel characters I want right now. Dr Strange and Taskmaster would both be pretty cool. I'd love it if the Green Goblin got in, but I doubt it.
As far as Capcom goes... Arthur is the character I want the most, probably. Hugo and/or Haggar would be great too but I'm not holding my breath

Posted by BADS on July 25, 2010 at 11:16 p.m. #24
^The reason for that is because the Marvel characters didn't have any real precedent in fighting games. Most of the Capcom characters were bogged down by already having their movesets, established character dynamics, etc. Son-son may not have had any real fighting game precedent either, but again, neither did Silver Samurai. It's also just the result of coincidence, the inherent godliness of triangle jumping, and not watching who gets the 1-frame full screen super.
Posted by Teh_5_Point_Ohh on July 25, 2010 at 11:16 p.m. #25
@ Cornwad, that's one of things I didn't like about Tats was just one or the other. If I wanna trick somebody I wanna have my light and med hits to choose from.
One of the things I dislike about Mvc3 is how everyone has an aridash and double jump(I beileive).
One of the reasons Mvc2 was successful was the uniqueness that was in every character. Some had air dashes, double-triple jumps, counters, etc. Those were the things that made it competative because you had to watch out for certain attributes or you'll get punished real bad. It's like now everybody is served the same lunch no questions asked.
Sure nothing will top Mvc2 but we all gotta move on and adapt to the new gen things.

i cant believe someone said cyclops wasnt popular. dude, even if he isnt with the marvel fan base, capcom isnt interested in that. people who arent marvel fans see cyclops and think x-men, he is right up there with wolverine in terms of being recognizable. capcom and marvel want to please their hardcore fan base to a point, but if the game is only made for them you will see a huge lack of recognizable characters for fanboys of both companies screaming for the obscure character from the game only them and 2 other people like.

Posted by xShonuffx on July 26, 2010 at 9:08 a.m. #42
Well it depends on what you mean when you say 'popular.'
A character can be a popular Marvel/Capcom character but not necessarily a popular fighter in the games and vice versa. You can also call someone very popular because he/she was essentually strong in a previous game.
Personally I want new blood, while people complained about SF3 new characters I loved them and kind of sad that a lot of them don't or did not get used as much in competitive play. I really like how they are making each character in MvC3 as powerful as they can make them on their own, this way when balancing they can simply tweak instead of drain the awsome out of the character.
But Capcom PLEASE do something about Hulk, he is starting to look like a throw away character and he's even getting beat up in trailers, what gives!?

I'd rather listen to Twilight and Lil Wayne fanboys going nuts over them than listen to more "I WANT X" fanboy-tards.
Posted by Cinderkin on July 26, 2010 at 10:18 a.m. #44
I want to see Mega-Man X! Ken! Charlie! Spider-Man! Cyclops!
Ken has always been my Favorite Street Fighter character aside from Guy (who I wouldn't want to see in MvsC3). I feel that Ken and Ryu are completely different in terms of play style.
Mega-Man X would be a great addition to this game with the ability to activate his full power suit and shoot Hadoukens would be awesome to me.
Charlie to me has always been way above Guile (even though I main Guile in SF4 and SSF4) Again I don't feel that these two are the same character. Guile is more defensive while Charlie is more offensive.
Spider-Man has always been my favorite super hero, and I think him and Deadpool going at it over best joker would be great, not to mention he is extremely popular not just in fighters but in the Marvel world.
When I think of X-Men I think of Wolverine and Cyclops! Always have and always will. I have always thought Cyclops was cool. He has been my favorite X-Men ever since I was a child. Shooting laser beams out of his eyes was so cool. Being the leader of the X-Men was even cooler. Now I know if he is not a fan favorite, but as far as what most people would think when they hear X-Men; they think of the Rivalry between Wolverine and Cyclops.
I would really be disappointed if Ken and Spider-Man don't return.
Posted by MisguidedAngel on July 26, 2010 at 10:46 a.m. #45
@ 47
I'm afraid the word popular isn't a synonym for "well known". The popular kids in high school are liked by all, where as the school loser may be well known, but you certainly wouldn't call him popular.
I'm heavy into the comic scene and never have I heard someone say "cyclops is awesome!" unless they grew up with glasses...
Posted by Zero on July 26, 2010 at 11:01 a.m. #46
I think it's obvious now that X will not make the cut. After the teasing of MegaMan Legneds 3, the Legends Stage, and the fact that they can basically cut and past TVC MegaMan with ease makes me think there is no chance for X.
Also why do people believe popularity has so much to do with character selection in this game? Since when are SuperSkrull, Dr. Doom, Trish, and Felicia popular characters that people are clamering for? The only character that are getting in based on so called "popularity" are characters with upcoming movies.
Also interesting note that in an interview it was said the Ghost Rider will appear in one of the endings despite not being a playable character. No character revealed so far would seem to fit into a scenerio where Ghost Rider would show so that is a hint as to a character yet to come most likely.

yup it seems pretty doubtful for X. is volnutt really more popular than X over here in the west or than X in general for that matter? i mean the X series had so many games (X1-X8), the legends series had 3 (1, 2 and the misadventures of tron). i think they probably cant figure a moveset because X has more weapons than volnutt. probably thats why zero made it into tvc, his sword attacks have been pretty standard throughout the X series so it was easy to figure his moves. random thought.

@ Ichiban. Hulk and iron man dissappoint me as far as looks and voice wise. Hulk looked way better in Mvc2 and his voice was worlds better. Hulk sounds like a straight retarded drunk fool like those big huge characters that are super strong and only say like 2 or 3 words and their slurred to death. Doesn't even sound like the Hulk.
Ironman just looks pitiful. Looks like a woman version of Ironman.

They're still around because they are an essential part of the team. It's the same reason why Leonardo still leads the Ninja Turtles, even though Leonardo is no ones favourite Ninja Turtle.

LoL @ Cyclops being an "icon." Yeah right. An icon is easily recognizable to people who DON'T read comics. For example, my wife would know Spider-man, Superman, or Batman when she saw them, but she wouldn't know who the hell Cyclops was.
Cyclops is only popular with some X-Men fans and they are the ones who want him. Those of us who don't give a crap about X-Men and think they are overrated and boring don't want him in and want someone more interesting. Deal with it. Not everyone likes the X-Men.
