Toshi mentioned you can find the full finals match on YouTube, if you want to see how Daigo and Y24's teammates did.

you guys should check out this video. it is Daigo fighting that same Chun-Li player, Y24, and Daigo obliterated him. Really don't know what happened at nsb, nevertheless, well played Y24.
Just to throw in my own 2 cents here...
I've seen top players get handled in one match before, it happens.
Y24 is a GREAT Chun-Li player, if you look around YouTube you'll see he's bloody awesome. But, I think Daigo would win in a first to 10 set, IMO, he'd probably win in a best of 3 set.
If U.S. tournaments were single elimination like this, you'd see a lot more top players get knocked out of the early rounds, because no matter how good you are, you lose games.
Not trying to make excuses for why Daigo lost, because Y24 beat him fair and square, but when you watch EVO this year, you'll see top players like Alex Valle, Marn, Sanford Kelly, Ricky Ortiz, Justin Wong, etc. lose the first game in a set. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
In Japan, with most tournaments, they'd be eliminated, but here in the U.S. those guys typically take the top spots.
I think if you talked with most top players, they'd say flat out that single game tournaments aren't their favorite and they much prefer best of 3 double elimination affairs.

should also be mentioned that the full final match can be viewed here, albeit not as good quality as post #1 points out.
THats painful to watch. Without low forward diago wouldnt have done any dmg. Chun didnt need her normals improved LOL. SHe is now the turtle queen of sf4.
@ 14
he was cornered and zoned to oblivion, he wasn't turtling, he just couldn't find any options to leave....
now that is some amazing spacing by that chun. stayed just out of range of ryu's crouching normals and dominated with chunpokes. definitely knew that matchup very well.
Yall talkin that noise i have s strong feeling that Faigo was sand bagging EVO is in a few days and yes Daigo can be beaten.
Mark my words Daigo will do back to back like them Lakers
maybe people will top tier chun now like she should have been
Damn. See, that's what an intimidated Ryu player looks like. He crouches in the corner and occasionally tempts fate with a low forward, being too worried that he'll eat damage if he tries to approach. That one jump-in attack that ended in a throw tech was LITERALLY the death of Daigo's offense.
Clutch play by Y24. Unbelievable props.
I know I'm not remotely the first person to say it, but what the *hell* is up with Daigo these days? He still has skill, the fact that he got anywhere at all playing like that is impressive, but it's like he completely lost his nerve at some point. Even the online Ryus who fly over my head every time I get too close have more courage. Did Ryu's nerfs hurt his usual game that badly? Is he cracking under the pressure now for some reason? Did his time playing Guile leave him a broken shell of a man, unable to cope without the incomparable magnificence of the Sonic Boom? I don't get it... but whatever it is, even though I'm not really a "fan", it's pretty sad to watch a decline like this.
Oh, and don't expect me to buy that it's all because of the single elimination. I'm sure that's not helping, but this is too big of a difference for it to be just that.
you can't judge anything by single elim. many japanese players loathe the system, including The Beast (that's why his GodsGarden online tourney is first to TEN!).
But its all in good competition. I guess its more intense, like a real fight vs a video game.
I think Daigo picked up bad habits playing online. Check out his older vids playing against Chun Li's. He was way more aggressive.
Check out this vid its against the same Chun that he lost to. But Daigo's style was totally different.
@10: I don't think anyone can say convincingly who would win in a first to 10 between these two. Every time Daigo loses, someone says "It's just because..." or "He just wasn't familiar with..." or "No way that's him" etc. We don't know him so I say we should just look at facts and what actually happened.
@13: I hope you're joking. This Chun played an incredible poking game and was pretty much advancing most of the match. Turtling? Really? What exactly is your definition of turtling?

It's fairly common for Daigo to lose the first game in a match against a great player, it's inherent in his style and he's played that way for years. His style just isn't congruent with a team battle. If you watched the whole NSB tourney, you would know that Daigo lost to worse people than Y24... his teammates (Mago and Tokido) were also losing often. The 3 of them were able to pull out enough wins to make it to the finals despite losing. With a team like that, no one expected them to get lower than 1st. These kinds of things happen to even the best players.
I personally am happy to see Daigo drop a little. I hate when the same person/team continues to win championships over and over. I'm excited to see someone else take Evo this year.
@ DiasFlac0g
Point. Point. Point. Really, why are you trying to sound so smart when? The guy he responded said Daigo was turtling and that Chun was pressing forward. Painkiller gave his take on it and out of his strategic mind said that Daigo was zoned out. If that is right or wrong is not of importance since it's still very much a "point" (as you would call it).
Why don't you challenge your logic the next time you're about to make a "clever" post?

better video.
great Chun-Li, destroyed Daigo. Beautifully played.
