In a move that will help the fighting game community get more exposure, G4 TV will be airing a 30 minute special show on July 20th, at 6 p.m. PST, examining the past and present EVO fighting game championships as well as talking about Capcom fighting games.Coverage is Coverage, but G4 is not in tune with any facet of the gaming community so how does that help us? I wish people would look past the brand when Inking these deals. The fighting game community has grown since the release of SF4 and I believe we can grow from within, G4 will be around for EVO but be gone soon after so where does that leave us.
Beggars can't be choosers.
Crap on G4 all you want, they still reach millions of people around the world. If even a tiny fraction of them become interested in the fighting game scene through this deal, then that'd be a huge boost to our scene.
Plus, coverage is coverage. Last year's EVO stream topped out at 20 - 30 thousand viewers. With G4's coverage, we'll most likely double or triple that number.
Point being: People who aren't doing anything to help the community shouldn't be crying about the actions of those who are trying to do something.
"Who cares about them airing something only gamers care about"
Is that a trick question?
Also, from what I'm hearing, if the FGC was featured in Time Magazine or the 10:00 news, everyone would be up in arms about how news is casual friendly and it's not for us.
I don't understand, because it sounds like promoting something we love to people who are not us is exactly the right thing to do. Why would they try to explain EVO to us, who already know and will probably attend?
P.S. I don't have cable/G4 anymore. Is X-Play still a show? That was really the last piece of TechTV left on the show.
I agree most with most of the sentiments about G4tv as of late. I remember them when they had more video game centric shows, but apparently that wasn't drawing in viewers, sadly. To be honest, do you want to sit and watch TV shows all day about playing video games, or just play them? Honestly, I prefer the latter, and I know most of you do to.
You'd never guess from the website for the channel that is wasn't a channel dedicated to gaming though. Whatever they have lost on the TV front has migrated to their website in full force, with podcasts and videos that you'd expect them to have on the channel itself.
However, as much as folks hate the channel, the exposure that Evo will get from this will be major. G4's coverage of ComicCon over the last few years has driven that convention to sell out of tickets every year. I went the last two years, and the place was bananas, unlike the years where there was barely any G4 coverage at all.
If G4 being at Evo 2010 brings the same kind of appeal to this competition, then a lot of folks benefit. Capcom & other fighting game developers, Shoryuken.com & the Evo committee, and most importantly the players and folks that have supported the fighting game scene over the years. Fighting games are about the only genre of gaming that is (almost) as fun to watch as it is to play, and now the rest of the nation has a chance to see what the hype is about.
The bridge with MLG might be burned to cinders, but at least SSF4 (and other fighters to come) might have a public platform to be spectated from.
Hate if you want, but we've all come to expect that. Oh, and second you, BlackHart. The Swish was the only reason I tuned into Martin Sargent. Broad was a brickhouse. ^_^
On a side note, I'm excited to be going to Evo this year instead of Comic Con (like I usually do yearly). Then this news breaks the week before I ship out to Vegas. This tourney is going to be ridiculous, son!
@9
The sooner you realize, Mr.PeterTheBohemian, that the majority of the (competitive) fighting game fanbase is filled with incompetent, obnoxious, retarded man-children with entitlement complexes, the sooner you'll realize that bitching about things that haven't been released and events that haven't happened yet are par for the course for these people...
I dont get what the hell you guys are crying about..SO THE FU#K WHAT?!
I haven't really ever watched G4 except for the live E3 press conferences but I might give this a look.
More exposure is always good, it's just more potential demand for fighting games. Publishers care more about two customers than one fan. Not that I'm complaining or don't understand, it just can't hurt having more people wanting what we want as long as they don't forget the fans exist (mandatory motion shortcuts).
@DiasFlac0g
No kidding. This is news why? It seems like this site is posting crap every time someone at evo picks their nose!
Seriously lets see real updates. Eventhubs has posted 50 gajillion stories about evo. I don't give a flip about Kens cowboy hat being a prize. This place isn't and shouldn't be like all the other crappy SF sites out there that post this garbage...
