Mad Catz CES 2010 controller notes and images

Mad Catz is showing off several new products for fighting game fans at the CES 2010 show.

Here a list of notes to it's easier to keep tabs on what's changed and what hasn't with their new controllers, along with a few visuals.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom FightStick — Wii
• This stick is heavier than the other Standard Edition FightSticks Mad Catz released for the PS3/XBox 360.
• The stick must plug into the Wiimote.
• A lack of a dock for the Wii more seems to be an oversight by Mad Catz.
• This has a matte finish to keep your hands from slipping around on the surface, which is also different than the other SE FightSticks.

Destructoid has a solid preview video of the stick too.

Tournament Edition "S" FightStick — PS3/XBox 360
• The sides are slimmer now, but the weight was unaffected.
• The lock/unlock switch now locks the start & back/select buttons as well.
• Uses a new PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that is different from the original Tournament Edition FightStick.
• It a nut shell, there's slight differences and tweaks, but still uses same old goods (Sanwa parts).

Mad Catz FightPads — XBox 360/PlayStation 3
• The only change here seems to be the designs.

I don't own the pads for the PS3, and when I got my hands on the Tekken 6 stick for PS3, I noticed that it has a USB receiver, and it takes AA batteries. Is it the same for the PS3 pads, or does it have rechargeable batteries and sync on it's own like a regular PS3 controller?

Posted by Kikimaru on January 9, 2010 at 5:15 p.m. #5

Tournament S is basically a regular TE with a full-face plate.
Except you don't have to mod it for an extra $25+.

Nice! d^_^b

stupid question...

why are the ps3 fightpads cordless and the 360 have a cord?

Posted by boobee cakes on January 9, 2010 at 5:25 p.m. #7

Because Microsoft is stingy with their wireless tech, and will cost either you, or madcatz an arm and a leg for it. PS3 uses bluetooth, and also has the option of wireless with a receiver, like the Tekken 6 wireless stick I was talking about.

I see that they changed the button's colors for the SSFIV stick, from the ones we saw a few days ago.

Posted by cowboy_soultaker on January 9, 2010 at 6:06 p.m. #9

they are going to over saturate the market with these sticks. Round 2 seems like it was just released, now we got super sticks coming out. These sticks are mainly for collectors and people new to SF, I'd guess, since most everyone that wanted a TE stick has one now. Not to mention the tons of hours people poured over their sticks customizing it and what-not.

What they should do is redo the SE stick with sanwa/seimitsu gear as a budget alternative, 80 bucks for a fugly case but good gear would put sticks in every house (that wants one at least).

wire controllers? why?

Posted by static on January 9, 2010 at 6:46 p.m. #13

why cant we get 6 button models too? urgh!

Posted by cowboy_soultaker on January 9, 2010 at 6:51 p.m. #14

did you own one of the SF4 fightpads? the ones released on launch? My blanka one worked for a week and it won't find the sensor anymore. They're pretty much garbage.

I didn't notice the wires before but I am glad you mentioned it. I might actually buy one now.

Posted by Violent Lucidity on January 9, 2010 at 7:25 p.m. #15

Man, I bet those sticks are going to be major drains on the Wiimotes' batteries.

Posted by IkariAin on January 9, 2010 at 7:42 p.m. #16

There is any new about the new TE has common ground?

Posted by WTF MadKatz on January 9, 2010 at 8:05 p.m. #17

Why THe Hell does the TVC SE stick use the freakin wii mote ....WTF was that ish about ....SERIOUSLY. now i cant use it on gamecube games ......EPIC FAILURE madkatz EPIC FAILURE

I bought the Hori stick for the Wii. It was $40 less than the Mad Catz one and it works fine. Is there any real advantage to the Mad Catz stick over the Hori?

I'm not trying to sound like a douche, it just comes naturally to me. I mean, I really wanna know. I figured that at least the Mad Catz one would've have a dock for the Wiimote, or better yet, a GC cord so it can plug directly into the console (nobody seems to like it, but it would save on some battery life as well as reduce a microscopic amount of input lag).

Posted by boobee cakes on January 9, 2010 at 9:16 p.m. #19

Yeah, there's no need for the Tatsu stick really. I didn't even fix the wii-mote hanging issue that the Hori stick has.

I have a Hori stick for the wii, though it's currently useless, as my niece cut the cord =/ I'm going to look into turning it into a gamecube stick, since I can't think of a real fighting game on the wii that don't support gamecube controllers.

Hori is not too bad, minus their sticking button problems. If you don't use em much, I guess your ok. I have a PS3 Hori stick for when I have to use a PS3 for SF, but I main my TE stick.

Posted by static on January 9, 2010 at 9:32 p.m. #20

or hack your TE's with a gamecube PCB.

problem solved.

that sales rep is getting fatter and fatter

Posted by BHallday on January 9, 2010 at 10:54 p.m. #22

I own the ps3 madcatz fightpads and i will have to say i've bought 3 and all 3 broke on me... i was really dissapointed with madcatz customer service as well... they did not help me at all

fair warning to those who are interested in the fightpads for ps3 the usb has poor response and the fightpads wear out easily

i wish the fightpads weren't coordless and wish another company other than madcatz made it :( i wasted my money....

Posted by okay on January 9, 2010 at 11:57 p.m. #23

Please give us solid black buttons instead of the dark hai.

Posted by @Mad Catz on January 10, 2010 at 1:28 a.m. #24

You can't really have a serious tournament for TvC if you don't have wired controllers...

Posted by dd3r3 on January 10, 2010 at 1:38 a.m. #25

The TvC sticks should be directly plugged into the Wii. Most tournaments ban wireless controllers. MadCatz should have thought about this when they made it.

It's not hard, use the existing Gamecube ports or use the USB ports in the back of the Wii.

Posted by FREE1UP on January 10, 2010 at 1:41 a.m. #26

I like the TE sticks but you can FORGET about the SE stick and those GOD FORSAKEN Fightpads. I bought 2 Fightpads for the PS3 and both of them broke. They both stopped responding to the wireless receiver; plus when the WERE working they would randomly stop working often and I mean OFTEN til they just stopped. DO NOT BY THE FIGHTPADS!

Posted by Alfarin on January 10, 2010 at 5:22 a.m. #27

Did anybody else notice no hex key slots on the top of the TvC sticks? looks like they are cracking down on modding...

Posted by suomynona on January 10, 2010 at 5:48 a.m. #28

#6: 1) Because wireless adds input lag and 2) wireless controllers are tournaments are a pain in the ass, and do nothing but cause problems.

Posted by James on January 10, 2010 at 6:42 a.m. #29

ps3 are wireless because sony are nice people.

Posted by Kelgar on January 10, 2010 at 6:58 a.m. #30

I hope the xbox 360 version of these new TEs doesn't have that stupid green, blue, yellow, red color scheme.

Posted by SaitoKojima on January 10, 2010 at 7:18 a.m. #31

They're all really nice, even the game-pads. Though I'm a bit disappointed that the Ryu design is only for the 360, since I was hoping to get that one. (No, I'm not a Sony fanboy, just stating that I was hoping that my console of choice for Super SF4 would have my favorite character on it's pad)

Posted by cowboy_soultaker on January 10, 2010 at 7:24 a.m. #32

@aitokojima
I thought all 4 designs would be for both systems? Both the TE sticks shown are PS3 sticks but they will be available for x360 too.

Posted by ChunLiFan on January 10, 2010 at 10:08 a.m. #33

I have the Chun Li fightpad and I't works pretty well. I might pick up a Juri since the design on my Chun pad is starting to chip away from so much use! Hahaha! I love my FightPads, I really dews!!!

Posted by Saboteur on January 10, 2010 at 10:17 a.m. #34

Thank god the PS3 sticks have the old color for the buttons.

Posted by 4T on January 10, 2010 at 2:39 p.m. #35

I wonder if the new PCB will work better, or at all with PC setups.

Posted by PLEASE DO NOT BUY FIGHTPAD on January 10, 2010 at 11:09 p.m. #36

People, out side of the 6 button lay out... fight pads are TOTAL GARBAGE!!!! COMPLETE TOTAL CRAP. They cheaply made pieces of garbage and the D-Pad is so big doing intermediate stuff like dash suppers on charge characters are completely unreliable. Hori EX 2 Pad. DO IT.

Posted by 324 on January 11, 2010 at 2:21 a.m. #37

Connects to the Wiimote? Who's idea was this?

Posted by ^ Plug in Wiimote accessories on January 11, 2010 at 3:57 a.m. #38

I believe that was Nintendo's decision.

MadCatz may just be falling in line here.

Posted by boobee cakes on January 11, 2010 at 8:16 a.m. #39

Tatsu supports gamecube controllers, so why buy a gamecube arcade stick?

Posted by boobee cakes on January 11, 2010 at 9:28 a.m. #40

Tatsu supports gamecube controllers, so why not buy a gamecube arcade stick?

-EDIT-

Posted by @ #35 on January 11, 2010 at 10:14 a.m. #41

me too. I have a PS3 TE stick and it doesn't work on my macbook because of the chipset. hopefully the new ones will work on all PCs.

Posted by cowboy_soultaker on January 11, 2010 at 11:35 p.m. #42

@36 the D pad on the fightpad, even though it failed in a couple weeks, was way more accurate then even the PS3 dpad.

I'm surprised, also, at the number of people that expected dual-compatibility on a system exclusive peripheral. That wasn't really a feature printed on the box. VIA chipset PCI cards aren't too bad, a couple hamiltons more to play on 2 platforms.

Posted by monie on February 16, 2010 at 2:28 p.m. #43

hell ya i excited to buy one. it is worth to spend your monies on this stick.
