Microsoft to kill online play for original Xbox games
Microsoft is going to kill online play for original Xbox games on April 15, 2010. This will include such titles as Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, which has Street Fighter 3 Third Strike and Hyper Street Fighter 2.
Online play will no longer function even if you own an Xbox 360, as this will remove the ability to play these titles online even if they're backwards-compatible discs.
Many players have already moved on to other places for these games like GGPO and Supercade (formally 2DF), which offer a better online experience, but this move should migrate the rest of the fans who were still hanging on.
Microsoft stated that this move will provide a great benefit to the Xbox Live community going forward, although they didn't say exactly what this will be.

3S in anniversary collection is buggy as hell. I bought it and only played it once, every time I superjumped it got screwed up at the top of the jump arc. It was unplayable, and this was offline. I imagine it was worse online. Not worth playing seriously IMO, because microsoft couldn't be bothered to fix the backwards compat properly. Never played it again. Still nice to have it but it's nowhere near "arcade perfect".
Posted by juxtapose on February 7, 2010 at 11:50 a.m. #4
And yet another reason why consoles blow. Microsoft should not have sole control over who plays which games online when. Without dedicated servers, online play is garbage.
Posted by static on February 7, 2010 at 11:51 a.m. #5
awww, the Sony fanboys are so cute. get bend.
Who cares, yes. Its 2010, either play something current, play offline with your friends or use GGPO or 2df. Otherwise, stfu.

Posted by n00b_saib0t on February 7, 2010 at 12:14 p.m. #8
lol @ sony fanboys ignoring the fact that PS2 online play was shut down for a given game before their sequels came out. there were easily over 100 "online" PS2 games with no online service before the PS3 came out. its amazing microsoft let classic xbox titles stay online this long.
oh yeah, and PS3 and 360 owner here. you get what you pay for, xbox live > PSN.

PSN=free. XBOX is $50 year and they are reducing online capability, so you are actually paying more for less. PS3 will eventually surpass xbox 360 on total sales.

@ 15
you're ignoring the fact that supporting classic xbox online games is something sony stopped doing for PS2s forever ago, plus how many PS3s actually play PS2 games anyway? even if you have a launch model PS3 that plays them, you NEVER had online service because sony closes PS2 online servers for a game a year after the game comes out or when the sequel comes out.
oh, and like i said, i have both, you get what you pay for. xbox live far surpasses the PS3 in online play (xbox live is much smoother, which is sad since its pretty laggy). both offer the same features, such as netflix and downloading tv shows and classic system titles.
feel free to bash xbox live, but at least come up with something truthful. name one thing PSN does that XBL doesnt that isnt "costs nothing".

your wrong about the online thing some PS2 games (KZ1 FF11) still have online
Posted by #20 on February 7, 2010 at 12:56 p.m. #20
you're also wrong on the subject of it running smoother since it depends games netcode and CONNECTION SPEED if your playing some one with a crappy CONNECTION SPEED of course its gonna seem crappy on either service

They had stated that one of the reasons why you can not have over 100 friends on XBL is due to the old infrastructure from the orignal Xbox. While it sucks that they are cutting it there are many 3rd party webpage such as xbconnet that emulate XBL
So I mean if you are still playing Halo2 and Counterstrike on XBL you still have your options. If you are playing 3s on XBL you have better options with GGPO.
In the end it is going to make Xbox a better experiences because they do upgrades and improvements that had been holding it back due to supporting the orignal xbox.

There's only one solution to this problem:
PC version of SSF4. Problem solved.
Posted by n00b_saib0t on February 7, 2010 at 1:22 p.m. #27
@21 & 22
okay, a select few games still have online support, it doesnt make much difference when you look at my point. until this happened you could still play any classic xbox game online, yet the PS2 servers for most online games closed long ago. plus any 360 can play most classic xbox games, with PS3 you still need a PS2 to play ANY PS2 game.
and dont try and make me sound stupid when it comes to online play. playing SF4 on both systems, a 5 bar match on PS3 is like a 3 bar match on xbox. same game, same net code, but sony's crappy online service ruins it. a 5 bar game on xbox was amazing, on PS3 its ungodly laggy.

That's pretty fcuked up. Isn't SW: Battlefront 2 still thriving on-line? -_-
Posted by shinygerbil on February 7, 2010 at 1:41 p.m. #31
This has nothing to do with SFAC in particular, for all you rumour-mongers. MS are killing *all* online play for *all* original xbox games...they wouldn't do that just so people couldn't play SFAC.
With that being said, however, now would be the perfect time to release 3rd Strike for XBLA and PSN. Not an HD remix, just the original; Capcom have stated in the past that an HD remix of 3S would be incredibly time-consuming; too much to be worth it, for now at least. But a decent port would be kickass.

This news is great for 360 players. Microsoft has stated that the reason why the friend cap is at 100 friends is because they are stuck with th old Xbox live infastructure and they didn't want to kill support for the old games
While it sucks that people won't be able to enjoy the multiplayer of some great old games, the majority of players will benefit from this change. Seriously, most you cannot believe that Microsoft did this just to be evil.
Also, excuse my mispellings qnd grammar. Typing on an iTouch is a bitch.

guess they'll have to close down 'games for windows live' as well so that they can 'move forward into nowhere' with their crappy broken assed 360. ^_^
Posted by wer on February 7, 2010 at 4:02 p.m. #43
Why can't they just update their "infrastructure," whatever they mean by that, instead to include more than 100 friends? Sounds more like they just want more money by giving you less and throwing out a weak justification.

My 360 actually died on me last year... So I stuck with psn, you just can't compare the two. XBL is overall a better quality and performance online service. Thinking of buying a new 360.. f**k you MS you brainwashed me!
Yeah it is sad to remove online play for the classics, hopefully there's a benefit for xbl on the 360.
Posted by genosuke on February 7, 2010 at 4:41 p.m. #46
why are you guys even complaining. This does not effect you unless you play Halo2 or some other FPS games. I have GGX #R and SFAC and the online is decent at best, and that is if you can even find a match because there are times when your the only one in the online lobby, depressing.
Its all for the best anyways, google GGPO before you complain at least. You guys are just making a fool of yourselves
Posted by Truth on February 7, 2010 at 5:07 p.m. #47
I have both 360 and PS3. The truth is the 360 version is considerably faster than the PS3 when it comes to online play, and even loading time. It even looks better since the 360 upscales to fake 1080p where as the PS3 is forced at 720p. True, 360 does have monthly subscription fees. But you guys overlook that way too much. You should see the gameplay difference yourself between XBOX Live and PSN. PSN will always be a blessing since it's free but 360 online play is smoother and much more faster, guaranteed, and for a game like SF4 that is a definite must. Not to mention its also a *LOT* easier to find matches in SF4 with low latency.
Oh and please don't say stupid things like "XBOX has terrible controller for SF" because any real SF gamer or enthusiast will play with a joystick, k thanks.
But worry not as I do love both consoles equally. I usually have my PS3 for single-player games like the upcoming God of War 3, and some multiplayer games like MW2. But sorry, when you're playing a fighting game, lag does make a difference, so 360 takes the cake in that genre.

The positive thing about Xbox finally removing original Online play is that the friends list will finally open up to more than a max of 100 friends. On the other hand, I don't know why my PS3 only has a 100 friend limit as well. Oh well, at least the Wii-friend code system is efficient *sarcasm*.

More so in Australia where I live there are very few SF arcade machines...

[This will benefit the xbox Live community how, By forcing us to buy the eventual 360 sequals of the games we will no longer be able to play. They cut expenses and will make more money but tell us we win i guess.]
Agreed Megatonbeef. Its like we're being told older games aren't good so we ain't supporting them anymore? What, er..hello? ST and 3S two SF games of their series that reached their peak and games that have technical and proper fighting game elements fans and players of the rather *broken* SF4 wished it had.
This is an all round bad decision by Microsoft at the end of the day. And while the XBox Live Vs PS3 Network arguements are worthless, cos at the end of the day, its more or less anything on PS3 & XBox360 vs ('lag free') GGPO, and neither XBox Live or PSN wins in that case in retrospect!
A decent title like 'Street Fighter Anniversary Collection' in that case should come out i.e. be re-released for both the XBox 360 and PS3, along with the features SF fans would want in addition to the pre-existing earlier releases of the same game. So wouldn't this also solve the playability issues of not being able to play a particular game near your local arcade, say if you wanted to go online for example, as RHayabusa's has pointed out above?
*Sigh* your loss Microsoft?
No more ST/3S Anniversary on XBox Live, no SSFIV PC or arcade news, no Remaining SSFIV characters announcement news and rather pitiful news on games nobody asked for but fan requested ones aren't fulfilled or even taken seriously enough. Is it any wonder this place is becoming more miserable and downbeat.

CvS2 online with the original Xbox was garbage anyways. All the fighting games worth a damn on the original Xbox can be played online already with a PC -
Guilty Gear XX #Reload
Hyper Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike
The King Of Fighters 2002
Plus games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 are superior on the Xbox360 over the original Xbox anyways. And you know Third Strike will hit XBL and PSN down the road.
Naomi is already emulated, only a matter of time before it gets Kaillera support. Same with Atomiswave. So you won't be missing out on much.

just wondering, but I don't see people complaining about wireless play on the 360 as well.
I have Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii.
Xbox is the only one that requires you to buy an expensive adapter in order to get wireless gaming...but if you're willing to pay 50 a year for online, what's another hundred?
With Xbox not having 7.1 audio support, or blu-ray capabilities...it's weird to see how defended it is.

Posted by to scythe on February 8, 2010 at 4:59 a.m. #82
most people don't use blu-ray or 7.1 audio. 360 is defended because it has the best online support and community, hands down. I also own all 3 and to be honest, the 360 is the console of this generation. PS3 just can't contend with the 360 in online experience.
Posted by Toby on February 8, 2010 at 5:16 a.m. #83
@ScytheWP - Not really, the reason why the 360 is cheaper than the ps3 are because it doesn't have a blu ray drive and it doesn't have inbuilt wireless - and because many people don't require wireless it's a good thing it doesn't come with the 360 as it saves console expense for many people. Also 7.1 is pretty non standard, it has 5.1 support on all games and that's good enough for I'm sure 99.9% of 360 owners.
Paying subscriptions fees for online is something I have mixed feelings about - many games are played p2p so it's not really adding expense to Microsoft that they couldn't offset through game purchase prices. However xbl is a better quality service than ps3 and the subscription isn't exactly much (4 hours work a year at minimum wage).
Having said all that, dropping xbox online support? F UCK THEM!

Cr*p im losing patience with Microsoft. Their making it harder for their fanbase to enjoy their consoles. I'm sick of their grubbing financial ploys and shoddy service. They cant even get the party system to work. I feel trapped not liberated by their services and s**tty customer relations. I only have the 360 for online gaming now and no other console. I and many others are being fu**ed for our loyalty. I'm on my 3rd console in 2 years i know many in the same boat.We have enough problems getting respect from our own consoles makers let alone other console owners giving sh*t too with playground mentality I mean were all gamers here how about a little solidarity. I like the Wii and the PS3 but have many friends and invested time on 360, but to be told what I can and can't play by a pre paid provider is too much and thanks to their policies on HD were missing out on plenty of amazing games. I've heard some b*11*cks here, people upset about not being able to play x box games that don't even run on the 360 anyway, ignorant fanboy rantings from other console owners regarding our choices of console, the 360 isn't a sh*t console it's support is. The only sh*tt*ng is done by microsoft on their consumers, x box live is at risk constant of disconnecting and i have 16 meg solid connection and zero ping 90% of the time, I don't care about Blu Ray or any gimmick like natal or motion plus i care about solid game play regardless of console I choose and the rights of the people, I certainly don't care what fu**ing color my console is moron, it's just another excuse for microsoft to screw people out of what they paid for regardless of how old the games are Street Fighter 3 has a fanbase still, small yes but still consumers who pay subscription to use this don't want to be dictated to about what they can and can't play. CVS2 doesn't work on live either dumb sh*t not on 360 anyway at all, they are money sucking leaches its unfortunate that some great games are console specific because if they weren't id go elsewhere for my gaming. To anyone who dislikes this post I say read it again im not dissing any specific console exclusively, I'm dissing microsoft themselves and their marketeers, the pirates, for screwing people against their will. Most people would go to prison for that, its called rape. I'm not saying you have to like, or agree with what I'm saying but if thats the case I'll still say and think whatever the fu*k I want because last time i voiced my opinion on my profile I got a 3 day ban. Freedom of speech my ar5*. 40 pound a year for a royal shafting and now people have less choice for their money. This rant is dedicated to the unscrupulous f**k5 at microsoft and their sh*tty customer service. This is a personal opinion not a call to arms for any sh*te out there waiting to slam the x box or any fanboys to get enraged or delighted at, it is simply my own opinion and typing this sh*t makes me feel better. SO BE IT

PS3 was so late getting into the game and trying to explain to the world what bluray was and why people should be throwing out their dvds(good idea Sony lol), it will be obsolete in a couple years because MS has been building the next gen.
Peace PS3, we hardly knew ya.

@99 should get out more often, last time i checked ps3 was outselling xbox360 everywhere but america. but i guess it is better for xbox-nerds to just forget about the reality and keep pretending they did not waste lots of money on a useles platform. nobody needs xbox, you either have a pc or ps3 or both but xbox makes no sense anymore.

[CvS2 online with the original Xbox was garbage anyways. All the fighting games worth a damn on the original Xbox can be played online already with a PC -
Guilty Gear XX #Reload
Hyper Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike
The King Of Fighters 2002
Plus games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 are superior on the Xbox360 over the original Xbox anyways. And you know Third Strike will hit XBL and PSN down the road.]
True but just give me Marvel Vs Capcom 1. And i'll be happy as will other fans of that first game! That and Street Fighter Anniversary Edition for the XBox 360 and PS3. Once out on both systems, the console arguement ends doesn't it!
[most people don't use blu-ray or 7.1 audio. 360 is defended because it has the best online support and community, hands down. I also own all 3 and to be honest, the 360 is the console of this generation. PS3 just can't contend with the 360 in online experience.]
Only cos the original Xbox started way before hand and PSN run by Sony is somewhat lazy. But you'd be fooling yourself if you think Xbox 360 all round is a more powerful machine. Whatever became of its 'HD-DVD' seperate 'add on' machine capability huh? Exactly.
And people are going the Blu-Ray route as of today? Even if some people i.e. consumers aren't video gameplayers. The PS3 was always seen as a much cheaper Blu-Ray player until stores on the streets dropped their prices radically and people went out and brought regular Blu-Ray players because of sensible price drops etc.
Far as the X-Box 360 Vs PS3 nonsense goes. Real video gameplayers have both and on their PC's and play videogames accordingly, seeing as games can either be both great and quite crap on both console systems and PC's themselves to boot. Enjoy one that plays HD-Blu-Ray movies and the other for its online capabilities, nuff said really!

Does the PS3 play Beta-max?

So wait a second. The original Xbox still has online play? I thought it was done when the 360 came out. How does the original Xbox Live work compared to the current version? Is it even worth it to try to get three months of play now just to try it out?

CvS2 actually worked ok on the 360, I am keeping my fingers crossed for a XBL Arcade version of it.

baz = Sh&t stirrer seeking too much attention upon him/herself!
So sad. Mods must be sleeping but don't worry, its very doubtful that nonsense you posted will be around for much longer though!

CvS2 never worked at all for Xbox360 backward compat, off or online modes. A real shame.
Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Xbox, disc release before DL Xbox Live Arcade works but not well, and its an inferior release version compared to the Dreamcast/Arcade/& now XBLA version.

Wow an obsessive stalker? Where's that earlier comment of yours eh. Oh right you were trolling, figures it got removed then.
And pray tell how can one actually do all that if you (the challenger) don't cough up his/her own XBox Live or PSN Gamertag that you then to use eh? Never said nor ever claimed i was psychic, duh!
Go lie down and rest your head child.
