Seth Killian discusses the lineup for Evo 2010
Seth Killian clarified some things about this year's Evolution Fighting Game Championships. A few fans had wondered why games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 3 Third Strike were dropped from the lineup and since Killian serves on the panel, he jumped in to explain some of the thought process behind the scenes.
Seth, do you have any control over the games at the Evolution Fighting Game Championships? How come Third Strike is being replaced by the Femme Fatal tournament?
Seth: Yep, I vote on the EVO board, but Capcom has no involvement in it. A couple of points:
1) Based on our expectations in terms of turnout, the women's event isn't "replacing" anything. We could not run an SFIII: Third Strike tournament (or an MVC2 tourney, etc.) with the resources we are expecting to devote to the women's invitational.
We would like to try and continue to expand the Fighting Game Community, as we have always done, first with Vs games, then 3D, and beyond. Every time we do this, there is a lot of complaining, but after we've done it, the result is usually a better, bigger, and more powerful community. Women must compete in the SSFIV main event to even be eligible, by the way.
2) Third Strike was the least popular game at EVO 2009. That doesn't mean it isn't still played, and isn't still a great game, it just means that the community behind the game is not as strong as it once was, or has currently become interested in other titles.
There were a lot of great games on the borderline of inclusion this year, with none clearly stronger than the rest in terms of community support so far. To break our internal tie, we thought we would let the community decide in a very direct way, so you can indeed vote for the game you'd like to play there.
Finally, no matter what the outcome of the vote, there will be great 3S players and competition at EVO — often the side-tournaments are some of the most fierce, and a lot of fun.
You can vote here for which game you'd like to see in the 2010 tournament.

I liked 3d but like most people on the live stream watching, we left after SF4 got played.

Don't hate on me guys but I am gald no more mvc2 yea that right I said it,I think this is the best choice for evo. What i am saying is come on who want's to see the same stuff over and over again don't get me wrong,I love mvc2 I just think that maybe they should've ban some of the cast and have a low tier tourney that would've been interesting to see but whos knows they might still have mvc 2 and sf3 I am just saying for sf3 and mvc2 the tiers are in stone and that it be hard to win with anyother team or chrecter But looking for to evo 2010.
Posted by Dan on February 2, 2010 at 6:26 a.m. #4
Good I'm glad they got rid of those two games. There's only so many Chun vs Ken matches I can watch before I throw up. Same with MvC2, f--k all the Sentinel, Storm, and Cable/Magneto teams. Good work EVO, good work.
Posted by yes4me on February 2, 2010 at 7:45 a.m. #5
Jezzz... what kind of limited choice is that? I picked Soul Calibur4 because last time it was great.
Posted by yes4me on February 2, 2010 at 7:47 a.m. #6
I voted for SC4. My next pick would have been Melty blood thing... just out of curiosity.
Posted by @yes4me on February 2, 2010 at 8:23 a.m. #7
Your right. No variety on that list. Melty blood is pretty much the best game on that list. They should have threw in Guilty Gear at very least.

It's about god damn time that someone higher up calls out all those stupid little b*tch kid COMPLAINING PRICKS! There isn't a f*cking thing that S-Kill says here that a few of the more intelligent people said in the last EVO comment discussion. It just has to come from the bigger guys for any of those whiny p*ssies to listen and understand that we are NOT against 3S, we just don't want to remain the same! EVO actually EVOlving FTW!!!

"Third Strike was the least popular game at EVO 2009." <- This almost made me cry. People are so ignorant =/
Posted by THE TRUTH on February 2, 2010 at 9:05 a.m. #10
Tatsunoko vs Capcom is balanced unlike MvC 2 and i played myself TvC its fabulous :D at least you see DIFFERENT characters in tourneys
Posted by Hurr on February 2, 2010 at 9:23 a.m. #11
@Cheesus: The 3S tourney had the least amount of participants out of all the main tournaments at EVO 2009. Where is the ignorance? Seth is simply pointing at the numbers.
Like someone above said, let EVO actually EVOLVE. Let MvC2 and 3S be put to rest, and let their successors (TvC and SSF4) take their place.
Posted by Cheesus on February 2, 2010 at 9:45 a.m. #12
@Hurr: I wasn't calling Seth or EVO ignorant, but the general public. I'm just sad that people don't seem to care about what I feel is still the best fighting game ever. No need to adress your "let EVO EVOLVE" (hurr derp derp) at me. Because I'm all for new games being played there and with "Women must compete in the SSFIV main event to even be eligible, by the way." being said I'm also in favour of the Femme Fatal tourney.
Don't misread my posts please.

I think TvC has done a good job replacing MvC2, so I don't feel too bad about letting that go... but SF4 just doesn't quite feel like an adequate replacement for Third Strike.
...but I guess if it's not popular, and people aren't playing it, then maybe we have to let that go from EVO too. Well, it has been a good 10+ years. I'd still put my vote towards Third Strike anyway. If that doesn't win, then I'm hoping KOFXII does.

LIES! Soul Calibur 4 was the least popular game, not Third Strike.
Posted by classy on February 2, 2010 at 11:04 a.m. #15
all i know is they better stream the womens match, its really entertaining.. unless ur a P.C dumbass who thinks they shouldn't have their own tournament
Posted by @classy on February 2, 2010 at 11:06 a.m. #16
It's not being P.C. to say that women shouldn't have their own tournament, it's like, why? They have to compete in the normal SSF4 tournament anyways. . .
After the inevitable 360/PS3 version of Third Strike comes out in years to come it'll be back at EVO.
Posted by Soul Bro Ryu on February 2, 2010 at 11:36 a.m. #17
@#16
It's a draw to get more folks to attend Evo. Since women are a minority in events like Evo and as popular as SFIV is, why not capitalize on a Tournament strictly for females. It's a spectacle in itself, much like Kuniochi/Women of Ninja Warrior is to Sasuke/Ninja Warrior, which is co-ed.
I voted for 3rd Strike on the poll, but I'm looking forward to seeing the Femme Fatale tourney @ Caesar's Palace this summer. I fel bad for all those other chick in the mix 'cause Choko is going to ruin 'em. ^_^
Posted by X on February 2, 2010 at 12:16 p.m. #18
hes missing the point
new fighters have online, third strike didnt.
Plus all the graphics and such and competition also uprooot some fans, Third Strike is very old, so old i remember playing it 10 years ago how do i know? because i played it in aracades when i lived in long island which was 9 years ago.
So a course some fan base deteriots over ten years , because many new things come out, just look at sf4, huge jump from third strike.Point is it was a great game, and still has a huge fan base if you take in consideration the amount of things its missing in comparison to new titles

I voted for capcom vs snk2
MVC2 was sooooo boring to watch, 3rd strike the same, lets have some variety.

they should experiment by adding dbz burst limit(most balanced of the games) or the ultimate ninja series.

Sounds like PR BS about the women's tournament not taking resources that could be used for other tournaments. Just be honest and say SF4 is ridiculously popular and they want to milk the heck out of it.
The fighting game community does have a lot of problems with misogyny, homophobia, and hating non-Capcom players, but having a separate tournament isn't the answer. People need to step up and call people out when they call a female b*tch or make dumb gay jokes or just hating on people for being different period.
Either way, side tournament is gonna happen. Blazblue was a side tournament but had pretty good turnout, same with GGAC the year before that.

your gotta be a facken retard to think that SF4 is Sf3's true successor. Sf4 is SF2's successor.

SFIII will be retconned OUT of the series.
YES!

Thats dumb 3's was an entirely new game and stf4 is the new version of stf2 so y are they playin hd remix... they need to re-release 3 third strike so more people can learn how to play it
Posted by @misogi on February 2, 2010 at 5:48 p.m. #28
SFIII is not Street Fighter (that's why no one likes it)
Alpha and SFII are Street Fighter, that's why they sell like hotcakes
Even when re-released for ps2 (best selling console of ALL TIME). It sold like garbage
SFIII is lame and is NOT SF
Posted by Maxout12 on February 2, 2010 at 7:41 p.m. #29
I gotta say I'm happy with the line up and i voted for capcom vs snk (just cause i wonder how the pros will handle that kind of game) point of the matter i think EVO will be great i just hope wee get some good live streams for those of us that are stuck on the east side.

"SFIII is not Street Fighter (that's why no one likes it)"
No one? Wow you are the most facken retarded foaggot to ever talk about sf. Go play FF13 you failed abortion.
Posted by support the scene on February 2, 2010 at 8:26 p.m. #31
SF3 has good online, better than even Capcom supported online.
Also required a teammate last time, a friend, a partner. 2 vs 2 teams. Pad guy was in top 8.
But everyone else is just a solo pad warrior who were in that 1,000 entries of SFIV and took a quick 2 - 0 then crying about fireballs spam, got no friends.
SF3 came to PS2 5 years after original release, after everyone thought they were good when mashing @ Tekken or Soul Calibur and all 2D fighters didn't sell.
Dude just trolling, he can't mention one thing he doesn't like about SF3, just repeating what someone else told him. He might get outed as someone who doesn't know how to play or can't understand it if he says what he thinks was wrong with the game.
Posted by ROMMEL on February 2, 2010 at 8:28 p.m. #32
You should play Third Strike, its a good game.
And CvS2 needs any kinda online, its also a good game.
Posted by Yun-Li on February 2, 2010 at 11:02 p.m. #33
3rd Strike is the worst entry of the series. All about who can rush you down more. There is barely any spacing, parries limit the game to close combat and repeat combos. Parries are not used 24/7, but it eliminates any kind of strategy. It only TRULY allows for close-combat and rushdowns. The only character with which I could actually use some strategy was Urien with his mirrors.
3rd Strike is checkers...
YOU RUSHDOWN ME, I'LL RUSHDOWN YOU
LA LA LA LA! LA LA LA LAAAAA!

I love 3s, me and my friends still play it, of course we still play the new fighters too, but when at home usually we GGPO or something to play 3s.
Though it would be cool to see it at evo, i voted melty blood, its just one of my fav fighters :D
Posted by HA! on February 3, 2010 at 2:55 a.m. #35
@33
i thought the guy that talked mindless shet about Sf3 was retarded, but you manage to claim his spot as proof as to why abortions should be available in all states.
Look retard, parries are there punish players that use the same combos and strategies. If you can't adapt then go play FF13 you facktard.
And the only way parries can eliminate some strategies is when the parry works for both low and high moves(SF4).
"...parries limit the game to close combat..."
No shet Einstein, it's a fighting game not some lame ass DragonballZ game. Go spam lasers up your mom's ass.
Posted by Cheesus on February 3, 2010 at 6:15 a.m. #36
Wow, I was gonna call #28 stupid and just tell him that anyone who really thinks the alpha games are more SF than SF3 doesn't know anything ybout fighting games, but now there's a new challanger.
Dear #33:
WHAT.
THE.
HELL!
are you talking about? Parries increase the guessing game tenfold, thus making the game more strategic and opening up all kinds of possibilities. You can get out of any given situation if you play it right and it highly rewards skill.
Also, Chun Li, the highest tier character in 3s, pretty much never rushes down. Think about that for a while. I'm sure it will take a while for you specifically to comprehend but you'll get it eventually.
Posted by @35 on February 3, 2010 at 6:28 a.m. #37
dude chill i think th dbz fan boy was trying to say that evo will be better since only realy experince players can do constant parries and limts players from out fighting... then again you can't throw progectiles in ssf4 cause you can focus out of them but i think its easyer than 3s
Posted by :B on February 3, 2010 at 10:48 a.m. #38
"Parries increase the guessing game tenfold, thus making the game more strategic and opening up all kinds of possibilities. You can get out of any given situation if you play it right and it highly rewards skill."
Could please elaborate on that? How does it make it more strategic and open all kinds of possiblities? I here people say this alot of provide nothing substantiated to back up that claim.
Posted by Cheesus on February 3, 2010 at 4:03 p.m. #39
For example in SF2 and 4, when Ryu throws a fireball and spaces it right, if you jump in you get shoryuken'd. In SF3 the same situation opens up lots of mind games: The one jumping will propably expect the shoryuken and be prepared to parry it, Ryu could then opt to delay his attack, do something else or just wait and do nothing to not risk anything. Also, the one jumping in might plan to counter attack after his parry, or he might go for an empty jump in and then grab Ryu. He might also not try to parry at all because he knows Ryu expects him to do just that and could instead throw out some attack of his own.
That's just a simple example. I think you can understand from that.

You dumb fuuuu-, he won't jump

Tatsunoko vs capcom its more close to be similar to rival schools than Marvel vs capcom 2. The problem with mahvel is not the game, are the 4 gods and the official mistakes: "infinites". A tournament without the 4 gods and infinites could show us the true colours of the game, imagine dozens of combinations we could be able to find and see.
Posted by Juano on February 4, 2010 at 2:25 p.m. #44
Another thing i love of marvel vs capcom 2 is that "turtles" not always win, is the only fighting game where u can do something agains extrem defensive style of playing. U can't chip them, confuse, rush down. Imao, the only game in the universe where "turtles" not always win.

All you chumps that won't get off of 3rd strike's nuts, get over it, your game is done, you here me Ha and Cheesus, there is not enough reason you can post here that will bring back one of the most overrated fighting games of all time. You guys can't play any Defense, that's why you scrubs LOVE this offensive oriented game, you wanna play SF without having to worry about blocking? Street Fighter 3rd Strike is your game. I like how #33 exemplifies the nature of the game. All offense and No D
Posted by 3rd Strike is OVERRATED on February 5, 2010 at 9:46 a.m. #46
Most of you only like that game because Justin Wong choked on a fat one when Daigo's Ken made an epic comeback, admit fanboys that is the only reason why such an overrated game even got that much attention.

You're hilarious.
Posted by Jace on February 13, 2010 at 2:38 p.m. #48
Wut, no SF3? SF4 is so mediocre and bland.
Most of the people still playing SF3 have been fans from the early beginnings, by the way.
I also lol'd @ #47, since most of the people I know in the SF3 scene don't even know about the Daigo and Wong match, nor really care, since it was years after the game was a hit.
