God damn Ryu. It's cause he's so basic. Not even the top tier of Yun and Yang can overtake him.
is ryu gonna be this popular in MvC3? cuz he sure wasnt in MvC2...
I'm a bit confused, for Bison, Vega, and Balrog are they using the Japanese naming or did the translator switch it to the US naming? I'm leaning towards the prior, but I don't want to assume.
Ryu is an icon in street fighter, its gonna be natural for him to be played alot. Blame the casual players for inflating the charts.

Guess all them people that put in work for makoto paying off seeing how she isnt @$$ any more. Also she did win the popularity poll to get into the game, deejay gouken hakan and many others not so much they got put in just because. They could be overpowered and still not be played much cause people in general dont like their design.
Poor seth was already a disliked character but alot, didnt help he was the only character to get something fully taken away(the Air fierce) just takes the fun outta him for anyone that was using him probably
"Some of the notable things include Sakura being the 11th most played character, and Seth being dead last now, after all of the nerfs."
Lol, yes, after "all the nerfs". Never mind the large number of buffs he also received...more life, more stun, more damage on U1, better frame data on some of his normals...
Clearly, losing jump HP is all that matters.
I mean Ken has been largely untouched when it comes his overall performance and abilities. Some would say less.
Akuma and Ryu have been GREATLY upgraded from their previous versions making them Noob heaven.
Ryu's thrust punch was almost impossible to connect into other moves. Most of his specials comboed into super but it was a low amount but now it's off accidents!
Akuma has a hell of a mix-up game he never had. His combos were always gdlk, but it has gone extreme in ssf4. And those annoying 3:00 kicks they gave Bison and himself make fighting him more annoying than ever.
They nerf Guile, Vega and El Fuerte's specials but not them.
Capcom KNEW they would be popular and it's on purpose. To get people hype for...
Ken / Ryu will always be the most popular characters in any Street Fighter game. At embody the core strategy of Street Fighter: vertical and horizonal control. Plus, they're badass.
Why do people get so upset when someone else enjoys playing a character?
@#23
that jumping HP did alot in his match ups... seth didnt really need a damage boost on U1, and they did nerf both of his ultra on invincibility. A fast stray fireball can knock him outta U1 before it hits and U2 isnt easymode chip fest as now you can hit him out of it with a decent reversal.
The stun change was a significant increase and he only gotten an extra 50 health, so hes is still pretty fragile for not being able to play keep away like he did.
True a few of his normals did get better for comboing purposes, in which seth in general didnt have a problem with doing in the first place. But the stomp kicks where nerfed a little and i cant tell the difference on his supposed nerf on a already mediocre dive kick.
If the tiers end up like this, I will be very pleased.
This game might as well be SF1. I'm ****ing tired of fighting Ryu, hearing his theme 90% of the time and beating him. Quite frankly W/L Ratio whoring and casuals are ruining the dynamics of game. Who'd want to experiment with mid/low-tier character when losing means you pay. Ryu's just so easy to play if you know your fundamentals.
IMO the Only thing that matters here is BP Avg for the top 10-15 chrs since you need more usage data over time.
@#27
Most probably because when they face Ryu online they get battered. Hence all the "Ryu is so over powered baby crying" haha
Two things... poor Seth. Seth got nerfed real bad and dang, Yun is being used A LOT. Amazing.
Dictator, Boxer and Claw would make it much easier to recognize because the three interchangeable names (Balrog, Vega and M. Bison) can be confusing.
Seth didn't get nerfed bad. The majority of people playing Seth before sucked. They relied so heavily on jump HP. People probably don't want to play him now that he doesn't have it.
And U2 was cheap. It beat out everything. So having it get beat by things that SHOULD have beat it in the first place (i.e. Chun/Balrog ultra 1, etc.) is fine.
Number 9 for the BP usage you can clearly see a C. behind the "Ibu" that has been written over. And as an earlier poster pointed out, number 12 has "Bla" over M. Bison.
I know that Ryu is the SF mascot and all but. He doubles in usage from the next non-shoto.... and it's Sagat. That makes me kind of sad.
I hope a lot of people use Ryu when Marvel comes out cause he's gonna suck ;)
@#42/44 crispylinks77
A majority of people playing anyone sucks, but in the handful of good Seth players had to rely on HP for certain match ups. And seth bleeding damage, you kinda dont wanna risk getting hit when you dont have too if you are unable to get in successfully. Trading hits always works against him so it is a huge nerf whether it was "cheap" or not.
And the popularity i dont think is possible for capcom to fully control, people like who they like. And seeing how powerful fei long is hes pretty low being popular, that speaks for itself.
@#46
only a select few are gonna like the lower tier character regardless of how many buffs they gotten. I know alot of my friends and the group of people we play with at gaming parties just dont like how they look or play and wont bother even trying to play them seriously.
The thing about Seth's Jump Ferice is people are too stuck on it and forgetting with all the BUFFS he recieved (He can survive a 50% meter Zangeif U1 at 75% health, He can take a stun combo better and has better overall normals with functional pokes) people need to RELEARN the character, yeah I know it's an annoying concept if you look at the Seth's above you'll notice that while they have a sigificantly lower player base they get a lot more wins than losses (how you get and keep alot of your BP)
@#51
lol until it hits consoles i dont think people are gonna be too willing to pay to try and relearn a character they already worked on. Only Seth far mk got buffed for poking purposes, the rest of the normals are for a few more combo variety and block strings. The stun change,U1 damage, and far mk is about the only really noticeable good changes. Doing super after his hundred kick move works now but being meterless isnt worth the trade off. Yes Seth isnt garbage after the changes but hes almost like a new character.
And gief with 50% ultra meter took about 45~% off Seth life with gief U1 in SSf4. That extra 50 health isnt gonna change too much especially seeing how gief SPD does a bit more damage from the looks of it.
@#52
Trust me man people do not know match ups that well at the gaming parties, even a few times had a Viper player call my Hakan cheap. Now when AE drops on console im sure hes not gonna be happy. The same concept apply to pro gamers watching obscure character catching them off guard at the big tourneys.
Damn look at all the 22k+BP Makotos!
She's doing pretty good in average BP, considering her low usage. Either the Japanese are beasts with her, or she's been seriously buffed. (or both ^_^)
I wonder if that beastly black Makoto in the #1 a-cho vid (shiroitachi) is the same guy as Mimora from 3s. Playstyle very similar, aside from the costume.
Damn, look at Sakura moving up! That's my girl. :D
@JIHADJOE
thats cool, i can work with that.
looks like abel is really good too, it seems that in an atempt to nerf breathless but not hurt the character they buffed other stuff without nerfig the ultra enough.
and what is going on with akuma being so high? didnt saw that one coming, some buff in particular working for him that i missed?
I am happy about Seth being nerfed. When I face a lot of people who use Seth, I face people who spam his jump Fierce punch, and spam on the fireballs. It is frustrating to play them because Seth he has probably one of the best forward jumps next to Elf, which makes him a harder character to play against. Especially when spammers play "Catch me if you can". Some say that is defensive.... But I think that is cowardly. Just my opinion.
@powderedtoastman
Poongko is the best Seth I've seen play and for me he proves that Seth doesn't need to rely on j.HP in match ups. Even against characters like Gief he rarely ever uses that move. If people drop him because of that then they probably didn't know how to use Seth much at all or turtled like crazy
In regards to his placement, to be fair he was never used much, and a lot of people don't like his design (I'm indifferent) if people are dropping him on top of that then it's hardly a surprise
Surprised Gouken is still at the bottom of the usage chart. Oh well. I'll still use him regardless (gods know when AE comes out for consoles.)
I'm not really surprised shotos are on top because they didn't really change much other than Akuma's and Ryu's nerfed tatsu. Ryu's forward hp damage was nerfed. Other than that, that's about it. Then Ken was practically buffed with this cr.mp into cr.mk andn dp into ex hadoken. He almost can do what Ryu can do but with faster normals and better pokes.
Another thing I want to note is that some of these translations are dead obvious wrong.
Example: BP Average #9. The translation states Ibuki, but there's clearly a "C." behind it. The same "C." that translates to C. Viper in the Character Usage.
Another example: BP Average #12 and Character Usage #7. They both Have a "M." at the beginning but have different translations.
I don't trust this list in it's entirety.
@#63
Yea poongko is a beast in his own right, hes usually have his opponents pinned down before he has to rely on a keep away game. Agreed he can show that you dont really need it too much, but not everyone is poongko. Hiropon is a known seth player but he tend to use it alot, more often than he should i think.
Yea as i mentioned before people didnt really like him much to begin with and then changing him up like that doesnt help. Although i would like to see what crafty stuff poongko would come up with that buffed up close MP.
@#70
wish the same would apply to hakan >_<
I have a hypothesis: they're going to roll out new balance changes to the arcade machines whenever there's a dip in usage, to reignite interest (particularly for the characters that received stupid nerfs) as well as the general effort of balancing the game. When they've milked it for all it's worth (and finally gotten a balanced game), they'll release the AE for consoles.
Seth got nerfed harder then most of you people are giving credit for. His dive kick does the hitstun of a light kick so its offensive use ability is very limited. He was never a poke guy outside of j. hp and st. far hp so poke buffs aren't useful. Pokes don't help his mighty mix-up game. His zoning tools were his heavy punces, but he lost one of them =/. U2 isn't efficient for chip anymore, a crutch that seth players needed. Things couldn't get much worse than the dive kick really and the fact he still has a crappy teleport and the longest delay of a projectile still means people can get in, and get in efficiently.
The owner of ChinaTown in NYC (Henry Cen)uses offensive remarks against.

I'd like whoever is in charge of balancing to stop treating Seth as if he was the best character in every SFIV game, which is clearly not.
They nerf him hardcore because he is a boss character, they need to treat him like a normal guy.
Seth core gameplay of zoning has slowly reduced over each iteration, and I think we're starting to see the next Sean (see Sean 2nd Impact to 3rd Strike) However its not as bad, but Seth's game hasn't really improved over the course of SFIV and SSFIV, he's been kinda of in shambles then and he's really screwed now.
Despite all of this, I will continue to use him because he looks like Dr. Manhattan.
@#76
lol so what? akumahokaru and henry cen are good friends, them slinging racial and homo stuff at each other dont mean anything. I know you probably do the same thing around your friends, sh!t i know me and my friends do. Group of italians, hispanics blacks irish and Asians and we sling racially like insults around all day towards each other. last thing to ever happen is someone feeling offended.
CAPCOM is very specific about which characters it allows people to actually play (see Gen, Hakan, T. Hawk, Guy, Cody, DeeJay and now Seth).
And this is the rebalanced version? *sigh*
#82.
this is Definitely NOT the rebalanced version. Capcom can't balance a game just by using their own balance team. They have to release the game out for at least 6 months and let everyone get his/her hands on it. THEN WIthout adding more characters, rebalance it!. IF CAPCOM SHOULD DECIDE to add one or more characters(which alot of ppl want), the Rebalancing will not work and will have to start from the beginning again. I don't care how good capcom's balance team is, You can NEVER balance a game and call it balanced when you keep adding new characters.
Why am I not surprised by who isn't used? Rose, Gen, Dan, Seth and Hakan. Of course the Shotos are dominating again, if CAPCOM actually gave other characters tools they needed to be contenders than this might look different. None of those 5 ever had a chance: my poor Rose, nerfed into oblivion ;_;
I am yet to be added to the character roster... Hurry it up Capcom
