Sanvy sent word that Ken Bogard did an excellent video review of the new Mad Catz Tournament Edition S FightSticks, but unfortunately, it's in French.

For those of you who don't speak this language, you can kind of skim through the videos and see the various comparisons he makes on the new and old TE FightSticks, but also Sanvy provided this translation of what's going on.

Video 1 transcription: He notes that the sticks are the same height, however width wise they are not. The white protrusions are not on the TE:S version of the stick, which makes for a smaller stick which is more, "back pack friendly."

He notes that the Xbox version HAD to have the Xbox colors on them which makes the S version look poor. Aesthetically it is less pleasing (for the buttons). He notes on the TE:S the stick has a better image, it is much less somber than the first TE stick.

He notes on the TE:S the plastic overlay WILL cut your hands and it is quite sharp, in short expect this to affect your gameplay for extended sessions (you wont be comfortable). He notes the stick is good however, but the finishing touches are lacking compared to the standard TE.

Internally he continues to say, they are both the same. However the plastic overlay on the TE sits flush with the metal faceplate, however this is not the case on the TE:S. Furthermore the overlay is held down with double sided scotch tape, which makes the stick look shoddy.

Video 2 transcription: Ken first off compares the length of the cables in the sticks and notes that the TE:S version has a better setup due to the small protrusion being outside of the housing which makes storing the cable easier in the TE:S version. He also notes that the TE:S version has a thicker cord, which in his opinion makes for a more durable stick.

He then continues to do a Head to Head:
Looks: TE:S Version.
Ergonomics on knees: TE:S Version.
Transporting the stick (ease of which you can carry it): TE:S Version.
Cable: TE:S Version.
Interior: Tie, they're the same.
Playing comfort long term: The old version.
Finishing Touches: The old version.
Modding (changing artwork etc): TE:S Version.

He finishes off saying get the TE:S if you don't have a stick, there are faults but they can be lived with.

He states a full and better review will be on JeuxVideo.fr in a week or two.

Doesn't this new one have a better/upgraded PCB?

@ #4 SmoothJK

Probably not, I have never had a Madcatz PCB not fail. Its a damn shame cause the sticks are nice.

You have to adjust to the stick so you don't get hurt when you play it...and they use tape. Considering that they'll want to market this one bad, expect the better, original TE to drop down in price

In the video , what he said basically :

- The overlay of the S version is more cute, but does not fit very well the design, it's a 'cover' just put over the box, which makes the border sharp when you play.
It is possible to put yourself if you rub very strong.
Also as metion before, it is fixed with adesive tape -_-;

- They also said, this model, is for xbox360, and the bottons color (red/yellow/blue/green) had been imposed by microsoft, it's not a decision from madcatz.

- Other than this, the build quality inside the box, is exactly the same as the 1st model TE Stick, full sanwa.
Also the fist TE Stick is larger.

Please forgive my english ^^;
and find a fix to my previous sentence, and replace :
'It is possible to put yourself if you rub very strong.'
by
'It is possible to Cut yourself when you rub the stick with your arms while playing.'

Ken Bogard is GDLK

I want him to be the father of my children

Tbh it isnt easier/better to mod.
The only thing the old stick had which is absent from this one is the screws.
But i'd rather remove 6 screw to set an artwork than having one which is set with tape :S

Yeah, more than a few people on SRK complained about the sharp edges on their wrists, but some don't mind.

PCBs on the new stick also have had some problems reported on SRK.

People should also watch hammerheadc's review (in English) for comparison
Although I appreciate what Ken says, to me comfort is paramount so I shall be getting the TE Round 2 when the prices drop

I have one of these already and honestly, I think that the (multiple) complaints about the "sharp edge" is a huge nit-pick. It's not THAT sharp and if you can cut yourself on it, you deserved it. If you have good form and don't mash, the stick is fine. I don't notice any rubbing on the "supersharpOMGImmacutyou" edge at all. I love my S.

Awesome. French is my native language. =D

I need an advice. I'm planning on getting a second stick (already have an original TE) and was wondering whether I should opt for the Round 2 or the TE:S. I was planning on getting the S, but the stuff this guy mentions in the video is disheartening.

I do like the all black look of the Round 2, but since the prices are basically the same, was wondering which one have an advantage over the other.

I purchased one of these for the PS3 during the 30% off event. Brought the retail down to $109.00USD. Very nice, IMO. Durable. I purchased it to replace an old MAS Pro Stick. I do not see the "palm rub" against the plexi-cover's edge everyone seems to mention. My TE:S black version does look better than the 360 version, IMO, because of the colored buttons. But that is easily taken care of. LizardLicks.Com has decent pricing on Sanwa replacement buttons. Being an older U.S. player, I am more used to the bat-style handles. This is easily remedied as well. The same site also sells a compatible bat-top replacement. The only thing which I found personally dis-satisfactory with the stick is the button layout which places the left shoulder buttons on the far right side after the right shoulder buttons. I understand that the layout is designed after japanese cabinets, however, this design places a players hands too close together, IMO. Players with larger hands may find this uncomfortable or cramped. I know I do, and I do not really consider myself a man with large hands. But again, as an old-school SF player, I used a different layout on a wood cabinet with HAPP controls.

Ok, just checked out Hammerheadc's quick look. I'll probably go with a round 2.

The taping below the plexiglas and the sharp edge really is a good reason to stay with the first TE-Stick instead.

newer is not always going to be better. this goes for anything, pc programs, cell phones, games etc.

K un stick qui te fais mal quand tu joue, Bravo Mad Catz. Le vieux stick, pour moi, est meiller. Et le nouveau stick est plus cher je pense...

K a stick that hurts you when you play, Bravo Mad Catz. The old stick, for me, is better. And the new one is gonna cost more I think...

Posted by TheMasterPlayer on April 15, 2010 at 2:28 p.m. #22

I'll definitely go with comfort over looks. And I also like the fact that the older TE stick is bigger and heavier. Makes for a more sturdy stick imo. Plus I actually like the aesthetics of the older TE stick better than the newer TE:S stick. But, to each's own I say.

Dude has a f*cking Mark of the Wolves machine!!!

It's all grips people.

If you play with wineglass grip or any grip similar to that, the 'S' stick is very comfortable because you rest on the wrist extensors, and you should really have no complaints.

If you play with casual grip or bat-top hold grip you're gonna feel the edge more on the wrist flexors so yes it's gonna be uncomfortable.

Solution - know your grip and decide which to get, the first-gen is probably the best bet for most people.

I'll stick to my TE stick

Very good review by Ken
He also mention that the old stick is hard to put in your bagpack and the new one is easier. That all been said, I (=ME) would not buy the new one. I don't have the patience to learn to mod this stick for not cutting myself and therefore I rather use the old one.

nice review, as usual

I'm surprised by the number of the french news on this site

cuts your hands? I have never had that problem with mine. Maybe its just the way I hold it.

Posted by Soulfighter on April 16, 2010 at 1:03 a.m. #30

frenchies are everywhere aaaaahhh

Posted by Farsight on April 16, 2010 at 4:30 a.m. #31

#29 : Yeah he explains that it depend of the way you hold it, but notice the "problem" anyway.

Sry for my english, I'm French.

Posted by yes4me on April 16, 2010 at 3:52 p.m. #32

#29: You are by far a expert at holding joystick. Like Farsight, I am also French but that has nothing to do with my total lack of exp with joystick: I have never own one and when I play at the arcade, I usually hold the joystick in an unusual way.
