The community has already rallied around Hu by setting up a donation fund on Shoryuken.com. Mark Man from MadCatz will also be raffling off a Mad Catz Tournament Edition S FightStick to people who donate.
Probably watched about 20 streams in the past year or so that Chris Hu's commentary made better, and it didn't cost me a dime to watch. So I'll chip in some money to even it up.
Man that sucks. Sorry to hear about this Chris, especially concerning not only you, but the fact that your family had their life savings in there as well. This is sad news.
I'm sorry to hear about what happened to Chris. He has done a great job of pushing Street Fighter out there for the fans. I can't make it to those tournaments he streams, so he has been a great help to me & others. I'm glad to hear that his family & him are safe. Keep your head up boss.
Life is such a bitch. Condolences to the Hu family and everyone else involved :(
Coming from a chinese background I can sorta understand what he means with the savings, damn...
I'm not familiar with who Chris Hu is, but when God closes a door he opens a window. Condolences to Chris and his family but also remember it could work for your favour. Everyone is safe and sound in your family and look how many people have worked together to help you out, even though a lot of us have probably never met you. Just goes to show that the SF community cares for their own which is very inspiring. Always good to look on the bright side of things even in times like this. Will be donating to help you hope it helps mate
I'm not as familiar with Chris as I am Daigo or Wong-but a tragic loss is a tragic loss. To lose everything in a fire or natural disaster has always been a drastic fear of mines.
Here's to a fast recovery-whenever **** hits the fan, it's always 10x betters the second time around, I can vouch for that. ;-)
I'm glad his family got out safe. That fire looked horrible.
Donated $100. First online donation too. Condolences to the victims in chinatown.
hey chris, ive seen you @ chinatownfair plenty of times. hope my donations help and sorry for this unfortunate event.
Sorry for your loss Chris, I hope things get better soon.
I have like zero pennies at the moment, else I'd probably try and pitch in. But here's hoping that what everyone scrapes together can take the sting out of losing those savings a little; that ****'s pretty grim.
On the bright side though, money's money. No loss of life in that whole thing is pretty awesome (providing the two critically injured pull through).
With the help of the community, I'm sure that Chris and his family will have a much easier time getting back on their feet.
You guys are awesome.
I disagree with everything going on here. If you're his friend fine, but no one should give him money because he plays video games. They should have insurance, they should have put their money in a bank and that is the end of it.
I'm not waiting to get flamed on. I feel sorry for him, I do, he's a nice guy, but something about this just bothers me so much.
Faulty electrical wiring, building code violations in an Asian operated building...noooooo....really?!? Although I feel sorry for the families that lost their homes, they should go after the landlord (assuming if they have anything to give or even live in the States).
Life surely has a way discouraging people. This is life, and it really sucks, but hang in there Chris, and all whose houses were decimated. I have little to offer, but my prayers are grand plz stay strong.
Thank God there was no deaths in this fire mishap.But with the support of the SF community, him and his family should be right back on there feet soon, well hopefully.
Do you people honestly expect these immigrants to even know that they have the option of insurance, or to set up an account in a bank where they can barely speak the language? Get real. These people work their asses off too, they don't need negativity.
And as for directional donations, it's friends before strangers. If you want to donate to the rest, that's great, but don't get mad if we donate to Chris first.
I agree with a lot of ppl in here. Especially cowman, in a way it can be seen as selfish that people only give to people they know and possibly only for recognition. But giving money to someone in need is better than spending that money on waste like alcohol or something. I also agree partially with Scythe, why not have savings in a bank? maybe the savings were burnt because some people were trying to avoid tax by not putting it in a bank. Who knows. But regardless of whats happened I think if something like this catches our attention its our humane duty to help. And either way, this news should encourage us to a) help chris hu or b) Share our wealth with those who need it because this is a bit of a wake up call i think. Don't let me depress you all, heres a quick joke to lift ourselves back up:
Why can Guile never reach his full potential?
He's always holding back!
Bro, we don't know each other, but i justw anted to say that I am praying for you, and that I hope your loved ones have a speedy recovery! Hard stuff happens. Ia m sorry this had to happen to you and I hope the best!!!!
This is sad news. I hope you and your family are doing well Chris and that you get back on your feet soon
No disrespect to Chris Hu, as it's a horrible loss and I am terribly sorry for his misfortune, but I feel more sorry for the other 54 families who aren't going to get a dime.
Wouldn't it make more sense to set up a PayPal fund for all 55 families? That way, people outside the SF community would be far more willing to donate. You aren't going to find many people outside of Shoryuken and Eventhubs willing to give money to someone just because they play video games.
@juxtapose
excellent point. hopefully chris hu will share the donations with the others
@Cowman715
I don't think you're an insensitive doucebag, but I don't think your assessment is fair. Whether or not they fully contribute to the system, it doesn't mean they're intentionally abusing it.
My girlfriend is the perfect example. I'm Canadian and she's an American citizen. She came to live with me about 6 months before her permanent residence application went through. In that time we found out she had cervical polyps and had to wait until the application cleared before she could get proper treatment because she had no health coverage in either country. She had to live with a condition that could potentially lead to terminal cancer if left unchecked, because "the system" wasn't fair.
In a perfect world, it would only be fair if everyone paid their dues, but it's not. We shouldn't be shafting people just because they don't necessarily have the same opportunities we do. Immigration is a bitch, let me tell you.
I'm not 100% sure how long it takes to get full citizenship in a country, but I'm almost positive most of the people living in the building have been here for a few years. I just am disgusted that someone died from the fires and we're worried about chris hu making it to evo. That's basically what's bothering me.
@Cowman715
Fair enough. As I said, you have a point. All I'm saying is that when it comes to something this horrible, we shouldn't be able to pick and choose who gets help just because they played their cards right. All of those people should be getting help.
I really feel bad for them...but hopefully this'll be a learning experience for him:
"Screw tradition, I'm putting my money in the bank for some free (and safe) dollars!"
I would donate - but I'm not in the best of financial situations myself...
@Cowman715
Really? I don't think anyone even mentioned EVO anywhere. This isn't even about EVO or him being a 'famous' (I don't know him) video game player.
I think you're envious of all the donations he will be getting right? A bit jealous cause you know that if this happened to you no one would give a shi- and so you feel the need to stifle any money he is getting. Right?
I donated without thinking twice. Chris is a great guy and is deserving of this. This money isn't going into his pocket, his entire family lived in that apartment. I wish him and his family all the best, and I'm glad they weren't injured because of this.
Bigger point; if it wasn't for Chris Hu, nobody would care about this fire at all. Just another accident, another tragedy.
But now that he has officially asked for support, you know of the plight of the rest of them, and now you are free to help as much as you want. And now you are knocking people who are giving money, period?
Also that attitude from Cowman and MikeG is really, really bad. Don't help people unless they can help you? Nice Good Samaritan attitudes you have there, kids. I'll be sure to remember that.
So it's really about if he would reciprocate then? Maybe, who can say.
I'm sure the other families who have no connection with this community whatsoever would donate to you had this happen to you though. Positive.
Heres a point...
Ok theres arguements that this guy is not as deserving as others etc etc, but the money given is being given to help rebuild life. Recently I was on youtube and there is this popular guy i forgot what his name is and he posts up loads of funny videos on SF etc and he's well liked etc. He put up his own paypal account for people to voluntarily donate for him to get an xbox 360 because he doesnt have the money for it, yet he has quite a few TE sticks and a custom one which costs around 200GBP. From what I seen many people donated to him without batting an eyelid, yet theres this guy here whos life has burned down around him and we start dwelling upon whether to give or not. I'm not picking a fight with anyone, i'm just saying how greatful would you feel if ppl helped u when ur down even when u dnt know them, whether you deserve the money or not.
you should have pluged SSF4 chris
na ive never met you before, but if you check out these comments i hope things work out for you and your family. very unfortunate, that 99 cent store owner owes some people.
I think people are free to donate to whoever they like. Like Nyoronoru said, we are only paying particular attention to this fire because someone from this community was hit by it. Telling people here to donate for the OTHER families as well is like asking them to donate for every single tragedy that happens regardless of who is hit by it, which just isn't realistic. But helping out ONE person who is actually connected to this community is just more tangible.
Why are we arguing about whether or not we should help someone. Why would you ever NOT help a person when they have a strong need. Its not about what we can get out of it, and its not about how so and so got into their situation, its about a present, pressing need, and the fact that people should help other people. There IS a such thing as right and wrong. For those who are helping, praying, and giving donations, I have high respect for you. For those who feel we should NOT help a fellow human being, that is your opinion and you have a right to it, but PLEASE, just keep the selfishness to yourself, and let this page be a place for Chris Hu to come and read kind words. Your negative opinions are valid, but not appropriate here....
Life happens that's all I'm saying.
If my house went on fire I wouldn't go to communities asking for money, and if someone put it up asking to help me i'd ask them to take it down.
We're all big boys and girls... You can take care of crap on your own. Work 2 jobs like normal people.
Chris Hu ftw. I donated. Best of luck, dude. Hope everything works itself out...
wow, kind of surprised at the amount of ass-hattery in this thread. I hope other people are nicer than you idiots when YOU'RE the ones in need...
When things like that happen and then people help you that you've never met before in real life - that's when you know gaming communities aren't just consisting of stereotypical asocial non-caring nerds.
And when you then proceed to read comments of complete randoms regarding this happening - that's when you know the internet never runs out of idiots.
lol Chris Hu was not the only one living in that building...
Im not sure I quite understand why people are so quick to give out their money just for one iduvidual when many others were involved. If you are just donating because he does fun commentary during battles and plays SF then its kinda sad. Dont get me wrong I feel for the guy but I also feel for the other people in the house too after watching the report. Im just saying if you are going to donate it should be towards maybe getting money together to rebuild that place so everyone can live there again.
I'd like to donate to all the families, not just him. Anyone know of a local charity helping all of the victims?
you guys realize it's not like he Chris ASKED srk or eventhubs to set up a relief fund FOR him and his family, right? If you want to donate, donate. And if you don't, then don't. But stop trying to make excuses, or act like you have the moral highground, dissing people because they want to help. The guy just does funny commentary, and a lot of people happen to like him. SO WHAT? How can you get upset because people respond when something happens to a well-known member of the community?
Everyone who was/is suffering losses SHOULD get help and relief, but don't hate on the guy just because he gets support from the SF community, sheesh...
Some people are plain ignorant. Terrible things happen to people all the time. You aren't going to be able to donate to everybody, that's just ridiculous. You give to those you want to see do well the most. A lot of people respect Chris Hu, that's why they choose to donate. While it is tragic for the others as well, who here has boatloads of money to just shell out every time something bad happens to ANYone?
Btw, this is damn news story. PLENTY of people have seen this video, not just gamers. If they feel like donating to everyone that lost their families they will do so. The SF community isn't responsible for housing the homeless. And to the moron that said "just work two jobs"- That's like telling a homeless person on the street to "get a job". When you fill out an application what will you put as home address? A shelter? I'm guessing they take phone calls too, so you can put them down for contact information. Those bills you had are probably going to be paid nicely with the money you DO NOT HAVE. Granted the money situation could've been avoided, but it's not about could've should've this donation is about what is happening NOW. NOW, people realize his situation and want to help. If you care more about how he got into this situation, then just don't help.
Also, people can't preach about how you shouldn't just donate to one person you should donate to everyone when they aren't donating AT ALL. At least these people are doing something to help one person. All the others are doing is complaining. So either donate or shut up, because you're doing even less than those you're criticizing.
Very sorry to hear who just lost their home and things that were important and precious to them. This isnt directed to only Chris Hu (my favourite commentator) but also to the other victims of this event. Once again I'm sorry to hear this as happened to you guys. Wish all for you the best of luck
For future reference, if you decide to leave insulting comments on a story like this, your account will be banned. There's no room for insults when situations like this come up.
The people who left insulting comments on this story have had their accounts removed.
to those who left insulting comments you should be banned and grow up man guys like letitburn make this website a joke damn scrubs
My prayers go out to Chris Hu and his family during this
difficult time.
For those of you who wish to donate to the victims of the fire, the American Red Cross is a good place to donate to.
Its good to know he is ok, but it sucks, how the fire was accidental, as the news say it was,but hes not going to play street fighter for a while, til he gets a new home, or something, by the time that happens and gets his life back on track, hes going to be very rusty, i hope you comeback soon, ill miss your commentary
This kind of thing only happens to the most awesome of people
I think the other 54 families, are JUST as important. Not just him. Donate to all 55. Not just 'one of them' just cause he or she is a professional gamer.
That blows. I just prayed for his family and everybody else who was living in that apartment. Im sure this'll all work out.
Most of the people on this site are retards. Dont start sh!t only because people want to help Chris. You either donate or dont. Thats it.
My prayers and thoughts go out TO EVERYONE involved in the fire.
@Shin_Wolfe
It's not "most" of the people on the website. If you read through all of the comments you'll see the vast majority have been very supportive.
Very few people have had a negative opinion to express and that's the way it works basically every where you go. Always jerks out there.
@jwh8808
Opinions are fine, you'll see quite a few in the comments still.
Insults when something like this happens are not. And yes, those have been removed and the offenders banned. If you want to insult people who have had this happen to them, you're not welcome on EventHubs.com.
I'll be praying for Chris hu, his family and everyone else affected by this terrible disaster. Good luck.
chris hu is a great player and a commentator, and this story is just sad.
I heard all about this in the news... I pray for Chris Hu and his family and wish him and those involved in that disaster all the best.
Wow dude why would you say that did you not hear what he said about the bank you idiot and we don't donate just because he plays sf4 if you knew him like and meet him like me you know he's a really nice guy that doesn't deserve any of this and just so you know your going to hell fag
I'm surprised to see all this kindness, that's really nice to be so helpful to his community, but come on,
that's ridiculous, worst things append everyday and everywhere, and most of you just don't give a sh!t about it
yes, I feel sorry for him, and yes I respect him too, but god.. donating hundreds of bucks.. are you all kind of über rich or what ?
anyway, glad nobody died
theres no way i can donate i dont have a credit card or anything (via online). but if i could i would most definetely donate. anyways sorry about your loss Chris.
P.S if anybody knows how i can give moeny somehow than that would be appreciated
@125 You don't have a credit card? Do you have a bank account? If you do, you probably have a debit card and you can use it through paypal. If you don't have a debit card, but have a checking account, you can link your bank account to paypal.
If you're a minor and only have a bit of cash, keep the money and just wish them good luck.
@127
They donate not just because hes a community member, but because they respect him and his work. Hes a legendary commentator who most would prefer (as seen in a poll). Everyone needs to stop looking at Chris like hes just another SF player.
thats messed up. i would donate but stupid paypal wont verify my account.
