Over on the German site Derwesten.de Super Street Fighter 4's producer, Yoshinori Ono, is quoted as saying that a PC release of the game is possible, but a difficult sell because of the rampant piracy that vanilla Street Fighter 4 experienced on that platform.I KNOW what he said, but this is how I see it.
1)Arcade release
2)That ad "mistake" leaking
3)SFIV is already on PC
4)SFIV PC sold well even tho it was pirated lots
5)Legit business logic to keep secret so we can max sales on consoles.
6)They openly want to get the game on as many platforms as possible.
When? Who knows...but I dont need any more reasons, I see it coming to PC.
Wishful thinking? Not with all those reasons.
Lets go PC BABY!
I don't blame Capcom for not wanting to do a PC release. Stupid pirates...
not that i hate PC gaming but no one can blame them (Capcom) for not releasing it on PC(I wouldn't release it for XBOX 360 either due to piracy)....Im sure that alot of true fans bought it....but its just horrible for business. I hope it never comes out for PC.
See, freaking pirates ruin the industry.
Hell, it's not like PC games are even that expensive...
@1
What's your point?
If you're not gonna play the PC version, don't deprive US of the version we want. =/
This is just bullsiht. So we have 2 million pirated copies, who tells us this is lost money?I mean comeon this game without multiplayer experience is like playing World of warcraft on a Sandbox sERVER- Thats just crap. So they have the numbers of 2 million copies, how many digital copies where sold by steam? noone knows cause steam doesnt give out any numbers. How many store sales? I bet more then 2 million. So I really dont get that reasoning. Its stupid excuses and nonsense in my ears.
@ BlankaBeast
The game was pirated more than it was purchased.
Business logic dictates, if they lose money on something, why repeat it. If anything, this would lead to less and less Capcom games finding their way onto the PC all together.
Think about it...if you were the owner of a company, and put out a product that was stolen nearly 2 million times...(old figures, I'm sure it's over 2 mil by now)...would you do the exact same thing again, and just allow yourself to lose another 80 million dollars?
If Capcom cancels the PC version of SSF4, makes a big shot in own foot, but TTX2 is already hacked. Every Arcade center in other countries without federal control of piracy will get this game in arcade version spending down to 400$ for PC for run it.. Celeron E3300, 9800 GT, 1GB RAM and any chipset what support it...
I'm noob Brazilian sry 4 my bad english.. :P
The funny thing is you can play online even with a pirated copy, if you have a working Live game serial code. So if you owned a Windows Live compatible game, for example Gears of War, you can play with Street Fighter 4 online with the Gears of war's serial code. And that's stupid...
But anyway... i bought one copy for the PC and one Collectors edition for Xbox 360 and i don't even own an Xbox X)
There is nothing to think about. The amount of times its stolen in this case does not matter. Bottom line is overall SALES figures and they already said it sold well. Online is where SFIV is at, and PC is the best version hands down. It doesnt cost as much since the foundation is already laid with the SFIV PC code anyway. Its a no brainer - easy dev, low cost, and at LEAST as many sales as Vanilla. Win/Win, GO PC People!!
Like others said, piracy doesn't necessarily means lost sales. I doubt every one out of those two million pirates would buy it if they had no chance of pirating. Hell, I doubt even 1% of them would buy it.
And yes, you can play a pirated copy online with the key from another game. This is stupid, and it's Microsoft's fault. Somebody said here on EH a couple months ago that this won't work with games developed with Games for Windows Live 3.0. If that's the case, hopefully Capcom will update their code (and this is quite possibly the largest work that needs to be done on a PC port, since they already have every core aspect of the game working).
Svensson said SF4 on the PC sold OK, but didn't guarantee SSF4 it would be on the PC. It also didn't sell so badly that it guaranteed it wouldn't be on the PC either. Middle ground, it sounded like to me at least.
Seems like the release is up in the air, if you ask me.
@ ScytheWP
Well first off, the 2 million pirated copies does not mean they would have otherwise sold 2 million copies. Especially considering that the game was leaked nearly a weak before it hit shelves. I pirated it to get it early, and then bought it when it hit shelves. Nearly every PC gamer I know that was planning to buy it anyway also did this. Then you have to account for people who just wanted to mess around with it and would have never bought it anyway.
Then you assume that they "lost money". This is wrong. Sven already stated that it did not do poorly, which means the PC version generated more money than they put into it. Pretending that potentially lost potential sales that potentially kept the sales numbers down being the same as "losing money" is silly in the first place.
But because SSFIV is expected to sell less than SFIV, the potentiall PC sales are probably just "not worth it" this time around. Or they know they will be doing it and are just hiding it so they can get PC gamers to buy the console version first.
I downloaded the game illegal. I did that to test how it worked on my computer, and then I bought it. I got other friends of mine who did that as well.
I hope they release this on PC, I really think the PC version is the best version of SF4.
Release it on PC and I might by the game twice, just like I bought SF4 on PS3 and PC ;)
Fine, pirates suck... but CAPCOM should actually think about this:
Would more sold copies exist, if pirates wouldn't? People know that they can't play online when they download it, so either people downloaded it, who wouldn't buy the game anyway (without speaking about the GfWL bug..), or people who tested and bought it for sure. This pirates-count is actually something, what i can't understand fully in the discussion about a PC-release.
I just say.. please, we want it.
I would like a PC version as well as my ps3 version, it'd be awesome.
@ #8
So you're saying you don't want it on PC and you don't want it on Xbox? You want capcom to only release the arcade and PS3 versions? Genius.
I double dipped with the PS3 version and the PC. I ended up playing the PC version more due to better connections. I hope it does come out, as I'm willing to double dip again.
@ stubbs
"Or they know they will be doing it and are just hiding it so they can get PC gamers to buy the console version first."
You probably hit the nail on the head there - they have something to benefit from not revealing plans yet.
Business is business. These people aren't here to only have fun, they are also here to make $.
@12
You are aware for PC players on the later stage after it's release wanted to download just to test it out on their PC if they were able to handle it right?
I mean, I did, my brother did, friends that i know did. We all downloaded it..... and after we knew our PC could handle it, we bought it.
I know there is a benchmark test, but when you're given a choice to download the benchmark test as easy as the pirate version, the choice is apparent.
Furthermore, downloaded status doesn't mean a hard-coded obtaining of the game, so you can't say 2million copies of pirated versions are on the loose.
I'm really disappointed that they took the results based on 3rd party (Piracy websites) to determine how bad it was.
#24... and yeah, thats that factor. So i downloaded Mass Effect 2, and after that i bought the Collectors edition next week, and bought several DLC-s. So i can safely say, that that 2 million is only 1 million xD
It´s mainly a punch in the face for the real street fighter and fighting game fans who simply don´t own a ps3 or 360. I doubt a fan of the franchise pirated SFIV. Capcom should stick to their decision releasing PC versions of this sf genaration, even Blazblue gets a PC port and they probably have a lower budget and a smaller fanbase!
@ 18 I lol'd hard...The PC version is the BEST version.
Anyways I dont own an xbox 360 and I really dont want to buy one just for SSF4 I hope they do decide to put it on the PC :)
Anyone saying "I downloaded it to see if it would work on my computer before buying it" is stupid and not fooling anyone since capcom released a benchmark program to test if your computer can handle the game or not.
Capcom can be nazi's about things, such as most of their games (for newer systems) lock game save back ups. I cant imagine them putting out a game they know will be pirated.
@34
Read my comment at at post 31 and understand why people would download the pirated version first before naming people stupid. Think a little.
And i also still support the cause of having an SSF4 for PC mind you.
gravedigger666 is right
Most people wouldnt even bother to take the time to download and install the game if they didnt have interest in buying it. On the plus side a high pirate count shows a high interest in the game on PC. Now we know how it runs on our PCs, so we dont need a benchmark or download, we can just buy it. The benchmark was great for me since I had to update my video card at the time, and was ready for release.
yawn
the pc version is just the xbox 360 version anyway.
hunt for 360 strings in the executable, the same deal with MW2.
VanillaSF4
I was wondering about that, I thought it would be very close to the 360 version as far as coding. Maybe a little different code for GFWL online too??
@25 (his1nightmare)
Good point. Pirate dl count can be a good sign of a games success.
If people dl it and they like it, they will buy it most of the time. If they don't like it, they wont play it. I don't know about you but I like the idea of trying out a game. Why chance it on full retail price? If a game is bad, it doesn't deserve my money.
Look, the pc game was profitable. They aren't talking about it right now because they don't want it to interfere with console sales (probably).
Hey Capcom!:
I suggest a trial version that is free to download. One stage, a few players, and a 15 minute timeout, or something like that. It will discourage people from downloading it and allow people to try it out and see if it's worth their money.
@Dark_Fantom
dude I said i wouldn't release it on XBOX 360 due to piracy (in no way am I FanboyING anything) but like that would ever happen...it was just me saying thing for no reason...GENIUS.
BlankaBeast,
hehe yeah, its kinda silly too.
they develop on the pc, and target the 360.
the retail pc version seems to be the ported 360 version, but was compiled on a pc.
lol
They can pirate it all they want. If they cant fight other people online its like downloading a trail/demo of the game.
I don't see the big deal with playing a fighting game on PC. I use my PC for FPS and RTS games only. Fighting games are designed more for arcade and console.
If people pirate games, how do the developers get paid for their hard work?
Blame the Pirates not Capcom if this doesn't come out on PC.
To the people saying "good thing those pc freaks get f*cked" not cool, remember that every SF4 PC player here has bought his game to play it online.
I never did played a street fighter game before this one, I bought it out of random, and now I'm considering buying an arcade stick.
this is exacly why they should do the PC version, people might buy it, might love it, then be part of the comunity and help this game get even more popular.
Pirates are not worth any interest, they don't even appreciate the games they download, I do understand that piracy is a challenge for editors but they should keep their focus on their true fans (and put back the character unlocking so pirates don't get to play all characters haha ! ^^)
lol @ the picture of SF4 with the pirate logo on top
VanillaSF4
Yeah really, I mean since its created on a PC in the first place, very silly, but still easy nonetheless.
Anyway U know there has to be some positive correlation between most pirated and top selling. This game was bigger than the avg PC game since its a great fighting game and not just another FPS. Get a stick or controller/pad and you are good to go.
Hey does anyone know what the best place to buy SSF4 is? With the best extra stuff?
I know Amazon has it with an a new costume pack: http://www.amazon.com/Super-Street-Fi...
So where can I get the best version?
It's funny how the companies see piracy as lost money lol, the pirates wouldn't have bought the game anyways because if they cared a little bit about it they would have bought it for the online play. And the ones that liked the game probably waited for SSFIV to buy an original copy to play online... I don't think is a good move by capcom, if the PC release of SFIV gave profits it's stupid not to release the PC version of SSFIV.
Nice use of logic Kenscrub, if by joke you mean "best version".
It's capcom's choice I personally don't care
and for all of you who downloaded its and then bought the game you don't account for the other 2+ million who dled it only yourself. Also I doubt anyone who dled it and didn't buy it would mention they did especially with this site now requires you log in
My guess is we have it by September, just like we got SFIV about 5 months after consoles. Maybe even a bit sooner this time since its less conversion/testing time needed.
LOL @ KenScrub Im glad you liked that enough to repeat it back twice now.
Guys, technically PC version is the best hands down, regardless of the online community and the scrubs that play with onboard graphics. It's the only version where u can play in 1080p or beyond, have added graphical options, can use both xbox360/PS3 controllers and fightsticks (and other PC devices).quicker loading times, mobile( w/Laptop) and I gots better connection than the PS3 Version. I downloaded the PC version; I ended up buying 2 SF4 PC and the PS3 version because of it.
@#47
Fighting games being designed for console? What does that even mean? The only time when a (2D, 4- or 6-button) fighting game got "designed for console" was when they restricted possible inputs for commands. You don't see any inputs like LP+MK, because that's hell on a typical console controller.
I agree certain games work better on consoles because of analog sticks and buttons, but that's not the case here. I see no single advantage a console has over a PC on Street Fighter or a similar game.
how about just give pc a crappy copy of ssf4 since they gonna pirate it anyway might ass well give them a half assed game ????? I would do that if I was the boss of capcom
@ Ex_Ein
"and for all of you who downloaded its and then bought the game you don't account for the other 2+ million who dled it only yourself. Also I doubt anyone who dled it and didn't buy it would mention they did especially with this site now requires you log in"
- where are the facts to back up your statement?
Lechooga
its in the link in the article, was actually the 2nd highest on xbox. something like 850,000.
KenScrub - Emulation is the highest form of flattery. Now lets get SSIV4 emulated on PC ASAP!!
850,000 is just the conservative estimate.
it doesnt take into account the numbers from 0 day ftp's and various p2p platforms as well as that old chestnut, the http download.
SFIV was pirated so much because you didn't even need the key that came with the CD/Box. ANY GFWL key could be used to activate an illegal copy of the game. It's just faulty distribution.
Sell Super SFIV for $30 on PC and watch the purchases sky rocket.
this is getting silly anyway.
imagine this though.
a new version of darkstalkers / vampire saviour developed for the ps3, which would render in 1080p natively.
the graphics and audio would be superb, and the piracy would be 0.
but thats not going to happen, we all know why. :)
Man, look at all the people here trying to justify stealing.
And so many people wonder why the PC community gets left out in the cold when it comes to video games...
Capcom has been one of the best supporting PC games/ports so I dont think they will stop now.
Everyone who downloaded are just going to lie and they downloaded it to test it out and bought it after. what ever but we know they're liers so.. Your pc users are saying this because you want the game but just think about 2 million+ copys priated on pc how much money did capcom lose we could've got animated intro and endings lol but pc users had to go ahead and download it with out paying for it
That's retarded to say that the game will not come out on PC because it has been pirated.
Maybe half of the ppl that dled the game just did it to record some footage and actually bought the game on console.
Most pirated doesnt mean it hasn't been bought a lot.
While over 2 million pirated copies doesn't mean that every single one would have been bought or haven't been bought afterwards, it definitely means that at least over 2 million of those people are still interested in fighting games on PC.
I also think that Capcom goes for a profit maximizing route with a 6 months exclusive on consoles. I only hope they do NOT allow variable framerate on PC this time arround and that battlepoints/ladder-points will be saved online only.
@Hark/75
I don't need any since it's an OPINION and thus no need to me to explain my grounding. I said "You don't account for the other 2+ million who dled it only yourself." cause it's impossible to account for every download of SF4.
"Also I doubt anyone who dled it and didn't buy it would mention they did especially with this site now requires you log in" You noticed how I said "I doubt" not "I know" that expresses opinion not fact
aka F*** OFF
I say this game will have Twice as many pirates now that much hype as gone from the game that was one of the top five most pirated games of 09. but yeah, it will happen! Just give cap some time you PC kids. like CRY SOME MOAR!!
@ monkeydhugo
"it was just me saying thing for no reason...GENIUS"
Ya i can understand that, I say things for no reason all the time too, isn't it fun?. I didn't think you were fanboying anything, it's just a stupid idea.
Obviously we don't want it pirated but it makes no sense to not have it on PC and Xbox, 'cause they're still cutting out the people who would buy it anyways, especially on xbox.
@97,
Yeah it can, killzone 2 cruises along quite nicely.
shame about the gameplay though.
Yea I say console exclusive for 5-6 months to max sales like 92 said, and 93 is right it sold great on STEAM. All this is smoke and mirrors, basically capcom people are ALL saying...I'm not telling yet, in so many words.
Either way even last gen(ATI 4850)PC video cards crush current console hardware limits with a decent processor to help out. This is why SFIV is just beautiful maxed out on PC...the best version of the game. We want SUPER!!!
I find matches all day long, all day every day. Well maybe not all day but some times on some days, but always people to fight in player matches.
But remember guys. Capcom got his money from the retailers, shops, distributers. Here's how it works. The shop orders a bunch of games and they sell them. If they sell out, order an another batch. So the piracy only affects the selling figures indirectly. So if you see a copy in the nearest store, that means that that copy is already "bought".
So... if you walk in a store, and the SF4 PC version is nowhere to find, you know that the market for SF4 is effed up in the pooper.
We need a PC version. The life-span of the PC and SSF4 will outlast the consoles. Those who've been in the community for near 20 years know that without a PC version, then in the next 20 years we'd be depending on emulators and a ggpo equivalent to play this classic again.
@Ex_Ein
What? Not cool man. You NEVER said it was an opinion. It was presented as a statement. I'm sorry if I came off as rude when I asked but I just wanted to know where you were getting your info. Especially since you post a lot and might know.
Funny, I'm the guy that created Dudly art based on a suggestion that you had. You seemed to like it. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a person that can remain anonymous but I would appreciate if you take that back.
If not, I'm in So. Cal. Do you go to tournaments there? Do you use the name Ex Ein? If so, we will settle it there. Ha.
Dudley art: http://imgur.com/sh4z7
Also, I pirate all the time. It gets my money if I like it. If it is no good, I delete it. Simple.
Being a hardcore PC gamer and have so since the days of good old MS-DOS, every time I hear that a game will not hit the PC, I sigh. Not that its pirated, but that the excuse is that because piracy is rampant on the PC, but apparently everyone forgets that piracy is also very much alive on consoles and just as large. Time and time again, a console game is leaked and pirated like wildfire on the console, even those that aren't even available on the PC; Gears of War 2, Final Fantasy 13, etc.. I can count as of today on one huge torrent site, that SF4 for the Xbox 360 has been downloaded 10,000 times. I also see SF4 for the iPod and iPhone at 6,000 currently, on one site.
Doing a little game development my self some time ago (Unreal Tournament Mods) companies need to stop blaming piracy for laziness, causes it does two things; It hurts the PC gaming scene and gives fools ammunition against PC gamers.
Not saying it doesn't get pirated on the PC, I'm saying stop blaming something that isn't the total picture. Either you want to port it (bring) over or you don't. The fact remains it was developed on the PC, so the source code already exists.
seriously we should get it read my comment #6 its all about the money man
I registered just to comment on this. Capcom you always claim you're all about the fans and listening to your player base. Why not make a PC version? I don't have a console and can't justify buying one or online subscriptions just for one game, even if it's for my favorite SSF4. I've bought the PC version for SF4 the day it released and played it religiously almost every day since. It's sad that I won't be able to join in the Super scene though, because you're making your real fans pay for the crimes of pirates.
I'm sad, I don't want to have to go out and buy a 360/ps3 just to play SSFIV. I downloaded SFIV and then I went out and bought the game because I wanted to play online.
There really needs to be an eye opener for game developers now. They need to see the truth in the whole downloading scene. I really wish "no we aren't going to develop because of piracy" wasn't a valid excuse. Look at the Wii and 360, they are following close behind the PC in terms of downloads. Hell even my Wii is modchiped so I can go through their library of games without feeling ripped off. I always end up buying games I feel that they deserve to be bought.
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/ne...
finally-admits-most-piracy-estimates-are-bogus.ars
piracy costs everyone money - even pirates. i piracy did not exist game prices would be lower for all and consoles would be extinct because everyone would realize that gaming on a pc is better. i will never buy a console because it makes no sense for me to buy another $400 gaming computer when i have a perfectly fine $3000 gaming machine already.
AMD X4 3.2ghz, 8gb ram, 8800gt sli, raptors in raid 0. no console can come close to that. stupid pirates
Please Capcom! I have only been watching the videos on YouTube of the SSF4 matches since the day it was released and cannot play it as i dont have xbox or PS3.
A PC release will make everyone happier! There are so much people who are ready to buy it original like me.
I want to play this game!!!
I really dont mind keeping this exclusive to consoles... no biggy
