Kotaku: Capcom getting 'bullish' about paid DLC

Kotaku: Capcom getting 'bullish' about paid DLC

Kotaku.com has an interesting story stating that Capcom is going to push out more downloadable content (DLC).

They stated:

Capcom offered the following as one of its strategies for the second half of its fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2010.

Use digital distribution to maximize opportunities to sell software
• Sell game software by using network downloads in order to give users more options.
• "Marvel vs. Capcom 2", "Fate / unlimited codes" (overseas), and others.
• Constantly offer upgrades and earn profits by using PSN and XBL to distribute additional content.
• Constantly sell "Resident Evil 5", "Street Fighter IV" and other additional content.

While Super Street Fighter 4 isn't mentioned directly, 'offering upgrades through the PlayStation Network and XBox Live' was how the original costume packs were distributed for SF4, so it's possible we'll see some similar things with the release of SSF4 too.

Gee, what an excellent marketing strategy, Capcom! Deliver your consumers unfinished games, and then provide additional content downloads that require us to pay even more! Disregard your customers and satiate your astronomical greed, you ultra-magnate nerds!

Gotta make up for that $40 release price somewhere :\

Posted by Is it on October 30, 2009 at 8:05 p.m. #5

So my question is will the dlc from sf4 be transferrable?

Posted by to #5 on October 30, 2009 at 8:15 p.m. #6

its already been confirmed that if you paid for SF4 DLC, you want have to pay for it again in SSF4

Posted by yes4me on October 30, 2009 at 9:03 p.m. #7

Capcom... if you are reading this, you will get even more download if you release SSF4 on PC (hint hint)

Posted by Grenadier on October 30, 2009 at 9:26 p.m. #8

@ Douchebag

It'd be different if Capcom released games that wouldn't even play without additional download patches. Forcing players to buy a critical fix because they wanted to rush the product to the shelves is one thing; offering alternate costumes and other optional features (that aren't needed to play the basic game) is another thing.

Posted by YEAH on October 30, 2009 at 9:38 p.m. #9

Capcom is always charging us for stuff.

Brb, gotta get my free Juri T-shirt out of the wash.

Posted by Rex on October 30, 2009 at 9:40 p.m. #10

@Grenadier

However, the problem with the case of SFIV is that the content is ALREADY on the disc. That, and the costumes were in the Arcade version.

You're paying for something you already bought.

People who paid for the SFIV costume packs only encouraged Capcom to do more.

On a related note, Darkstalkers is available for download on the Playstation Network now.

Posted by Grenadier on October 30, 2009 at 10:45 p.m. #12

@ Rex

True, but again, it's not mandatory; you don't need the alternate costumes to play online is what I'm saying.

capcom is turning into a money grubbing ***** that don't care about fans much anymore

Posted by DLC is evil. on October 31, 2009 at 1:27 a.m. #14

I'm waiting for a game to offer exclusive combos to people who buy a DLC pack. Racing games came close with exclusive cars that were much better than any car on the disc.

Posted by n00b_saib0t on October 31, 2009 at 4:19 a.m. #15

the content being on the disc is so the other player can see it when you use it. it would split the user base if you couldnt play against someone because they didnt have the costumes, or piss people off because they want to use the costume but the game wont let them because their opponent doesnt have it. capcom put them on the disc so everyone can play against everyone with no problems, its that simple.

its a lot better than something like playing GH or RB with someone to find out they have no DLC and you're stuck with on disc content only, trust me.

I will gladly buy capcom's ssf4 dlc.
I would like to know if my costume packs will be able to transfer or whatever.
Either way i've got my moneys worth in sf4 ten fold.

Ilovecapcom.

Posted by ll on October 31, 2009 at 7:03 a.m. #19

I would buy the dlc for ssf4 i think it should be content like every character will have to 2 extra costumes and recreated bonus boards from older games and new or older characters that they would bring back out.

Posted by Why give it free??? on October 31, 2009 at 7:31 a.m. #20

When people will buy it. You can give it free and have a million downloads or you can sell it and say 250,000 people buy it a $3 thats $750,000. Better than nothing. I will buy it but I waste money on alot of things why not something I really like...

Posted by Gief_Mobile on October 31, 2009 at 7:57 a.m. #21

Content costs money to make. Capcom made a FREE DLC pack for championship mode which DID highly affect gameplay, but they charged for something that was very optional, alt. costumes.

If Capcom keeps doing this same thing, there's nothing wrong with that. You don't HAVE to buy it, it's just a frills package.

Stop whining about everything and get a f-cking job for a day and it's paid for jerks. You people complaining are lazy SOBs that expect everything to be done for you. Does your mommy still do your laundry?

Posted by Trolling 4Suckers on October 31, 2009 at 8:46 a.m. #22

@Gief_Mobile - No, your mother is busy sucking my cock right now while you're engaged in your marathon dork gaming sessions. She says she is sorry she ever spawned a gutless degenerate gaming geek like you.

Posted by Smorgasboard on October 31, 2009 at 8:50 a.m. #23

I'd like the DLC costumes to be more "different" than the default one. I'm looking at you Ryu and Ken costumes.

As someone already said, it's on the disc so that others may see the costumes you bought. You don't own it just because it is on your disc. It's just game, you can always just don't buy it if it annoys you that much.

Having a job has nothing to do with being cheap. Maybe some people just want everything to be free and convenient for them. Randomly accusing people of anything else makes you sound like a jerk.

I disagree here, simply because of the nature of the costumes (zero impact on the game other than visuals). If the other player doesn't have a certain costume, you can simply show the default one. But of course, since the costumes were already done before the game was out, no reason to do that on the specific case of SFIV.

Posted by BassChamber on October 31, 2009 at 9:39 a.m. #25

locked alt costumes was a mistake from CAPCOM that gave them bad reputation.

but ADDITIONAL DLC is ok, and ill pay for it, because it expands an already finished game.

Posted by Exia 00 on October 31, 2009 at 10:13 a.m. #26

That business for you...

I don't mind. That's just the way stuff work lol

Posted by Perfect Chaos 666 on October 31, 2009 at 10:55 a.m. #27

If people are stupid enough to pay for stuff, why not charge them? If no body bought the costumes, Capcom would be out the money for them anyway. I say, if there's a market for it; sell it. And if people are dumb enough to buy costumes (that don't affect game play) or a weak multiplayer mode for a single player game, then you deserve to get screwed.

Posted by Randombob on October 31, 2009 at 11:28 a.m. #28

I didn't buy the DLC, and it's not for a lack of money. I'm not rich or anything like that, but if you eat at home instead of a restaurant once you'll have saved enough to justify the purchase. The reason I didn't buy the costumes is that I didn't agree with the business practices. Charging for something that's already on the disk, something that was available in the Arcade version of the game no less, is scummy. If they truly needed more funding for Championship Mode (which should've been in the initial release and thus shouldn't require our additional funding to begin with), they could've dipped into the profits that the game itself made.

I just wish people would sell complete games instead of releasing things that are unfinished or releasing things that are finished and having us pay extra for them. Grand Theft Auto and Fallout 3 have the right ideas with DLC; first, it's downloadable. That's kinda what the D stands for. Next, it's a serious addition to the game that was made after the game came out. Certainly, they started working on the DLC before the game came out, but they were separate and massive additions to their respective games.

When do companies start releasing $60 games with half of the content cut out, reserved for pre-orders, reserved for certain stores, reserved for Collector's Editions, reserved to be downloaded later for extra money? Is a person not entitled to all of the content on their disk? Legally, no, obviously. But, we can fight that. By not buying DLC that's already on the disk, you're fighting it. By buying DLC that's already on the disk, you're agreeing that you want complete games to cost more than $60. It's a slippery slope.

To the people saying "get a job," that's not the issue at hand here (and yes, I have one).

The issue here is that content on the disc that you purchased is being locked away so the companies can grab a little more money out of you.

@n00b_saib0t
--"the content being on the disc is so the other player can see it when you use it. it would split the user base if you couldnt play against someone because they didnt have the costumes, or piss people off because they want to use the costume but the game wont let them because their opponent doesnt have it. capcom put them on the disc so everyone can play against everyone with no problems, its that simple."--

The costumes are merely cosmetic, and have no real impact on whether or not players could fight one another. If Capcom didn't want to tease players who did not purchase it, you would merely fight your opponent in his or her standard outfit.

Again, the point is not "whether or not you have a job." The point is by "nickel and diming" consumers on smaller items, Capcom is seeing that people will eat it up, and will only be encouraged to release smaller games and larger packs of DLC in the future.

GTAIV and Fallout 3 did DLC right. Street Fighter IV and Dead Space did not.

Posted by manicman on October 31, 2009 at 2:49 p.m. #30

I have to agree with the dlc for games like fallout and GTAIV. I think we can all agree that the costume are not important but its only one costume per character. I think capcom can kick us the costume for free I mean they are on the disk.
Plus look at the amount of content you get in tekken and soul calibur. Regardless of if you like those games you have alot of costumes that come on the game and you didn't have to pay for it.

Posted by Geese on October 31, 2009 at 4:36 p.m. #31

all this means is that there will be costumes for SSFIV. If anything.

Posted by Geese on October 31, 2009 at 4:39 p.m. #32

God forbid Capcom makes DLC into useless, stupid things like costumes instead of things that matter like characters or moves or something.

Posted by kara on October 31, 2009 at 6:43 p.m. #33

if u ask me they'r not even worth the money

Posted by @wow on October 31, 2009 at 6:48 p.m. #34

Given that you say the DLC is £12 it's probably safe to assume you're from the UK, in which case it's amusing that your grasp of the English language is much worse than most of the Americans on this site.
Way to represent.

Can you blame them? Over a year ago SF was D.E.A.D. and now they are milking it to death which I don't mind. I haven't bought any costumes for SFIV but am tempted too (well if I hadn't sold the game cos the Multiplayer got me so mad - cos I can't take getting beaten half the time and it's hard to find a match in Australia).

WHY ARE WE USING KOTAKU AS A CREDIT SOURCE

Posted by anon on November 1, 2009 at 11:33 a.m. #37

Why are people moaning about this? Capcom is a business. They need money. If you're morally opposed to buying costumes or whatver they may offer, then don't buy it.
