Seth: MvC2's sales helped prospects for new title

Seth: MvC2's sales helped prospects for new title

Before you get too excited by the headline for this story, keep in mind several companies hold the Marvel license, but considering Capcom was able to broker a deal to re-release Marvel vs. Capcom 2, this obstacle is potentially one that can be overcame — but it won't be easy.

Seth Killian also commented on the status of the infamous volcano stage, stating if it will be making a return in Super Street Fighter 4. Here are his responses from the Unity Boards.

Now we know the sales of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 were exceptional, does that actually help chances of a Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

And since this game was allowed to be published, does that mean Capcom holds the rights to Marvel again, or was it simply a one off deal?

Seth: The deal for MvC2 was a self-contained, stand-alone deal. It does not involve any transfer of any rights, beyond the rights to re-release an existing game with the upgrades that you know about already.

MvC2 sales do help the prospects of another title, at least in the sense that it makes it clear this is still a franchise with a lot of interest and support, which is a critical question. That said, interest alone does not transfer any rights to make such a game.

Can you please remove the Volcano Stage from Super Street Fighter 4?

Seth: I admit the volcano stage is not my favorite SFIV stage, but we're trying to ADD content in SSFIV — not remove it.

Posted by shichi on October 29, 2009 at 11:34 a.m. #1

For SSF4 they should remake and add all the character-specific stages from SF2

Posted by anon on October 29, 2009 at 11:35 a.m. #2

Why would someone want the Volcano Stage removed? It looks awesome.

Posted by Douchebag on October 29, 2009 at 11:35 a.m. #3

What's wrong with the volcano stage? What they need to do is produce new music to replace the crappy soundtrack of SFIV.

Posted by that stage ROCKS on October 29, 2009 at 11:36 a.m. #4

i love the volcano stage : )

Posted by Pengruin on October 29, 2009 at 11:38 a.m. #5

I am also a fan of the Volcano stage. It's rather epic.

Posted by thinking about it..... on October 29, 2009 at 11:38 a.m. #6

The stages are awful in SF4. Yeah, that's not the whole appeal of the game granted, but they're trying to appeal to a mass market. Glowing cool memorizing stages is what the public loves. The general audience is what makes them money. Not the diehards. The diehards keep it from never dying, but the mass audience keeps the capcom pumpin money into the brand, since it's getting money coming in.

The music is horrid too. Funny how such little things that really sells games to the mass public are, in this game, terrible. They should really work on that.

Posted by hundo on October 29, 2009 at 11:44 a.m. #7

the music isn't really that bad, it's just not particularly memorable (i have yet to see them surpass sf2's soundtrack)

and while i wasnt particularly crazy about the stages, what do people dislike about the volcano stage specifically? is it because it's distracting to see the lava explosions every time someone hits the ground, or just because it's boring?

Posted by geodude on October 29, 2009 at 11:50 a.m. #8

yeah the volcano stage is the one i select for championship matches!!

Posted by Kuroda's Sensei on October 29, 2009 at 11:54 a.m. #9

The volcano stage looks like it's from a PS1 game.

But at least it doesn't have any people/animals in it, since all of those background models look like shi--... pardon me, POOPOO.

Posted by hmong on October 29, 2009 at 11:55 a.m. #10

redo all the stages and music from alpha 3 and bring them back for character specific. the train cars for Guile!

Posted by EPIPHANY on October 29, 2009 at 11:57 a.m. #11

Once you realize the stages suck, the music sucks, the character art sucks, the menus suck, the matchmaking options suck and the gameplay itself kinda sucks... you're well on your way to realizing SF4's true worth.

But maybe SF3:NG sucked too.

Posted by furkan rising on October 29, 2009 at 12:13 p.m. #12

volcano stage music is my favourite...

Posted by yeah on October 29, 2009 at 12:15 p.m. #13

Character specific stages is something that defines SF series style. It is beyond necessary.

Posted by n00b_saib0t on October 29, 2009 at 12:18 p.m. #14

@ #11, there is no maybe about it, NG was horrible. SF4 surpasses it in every way, and is a damn good game. its no third strike, but honestly, what is? all SF4 needs is some fine tuning to take it from damn good to truly great and capcom has a track record of doing just that with follow ups.

PS- i like the volcano stage

Posted by TL on October 29, 2009 at 12:19 p.m. #15

The volcano stage has waaaay too much red in it and its hard to see clearly. I think that is the main issue. The worse is when Ryu throws a EX Hadoken or when viper does a burning kick or her ultra. it is very heard to make heads of tails of anything. I dont think character specific stages are viable for 35 characters. Capter STSF2, Capcom dropped it. It was also easier back then to do 16 stages since it was more simple.

Posted by Colino on October 29, 2009 at 12:19 p.m. #16

How about these idiots spend more time looking at the characters and playing rather than staring at the stages?

What's wrong with the volcano stage? Or any other stage for that matter? I think most of them are a bit shallow at worst, but none of them are terribly ugly...

Posted by Exia on October 29, 2009 at 12:23 p.m. #17

What the first guy said. Character themes on stages would be good too.

Posted by JUSTIN WOOOOONG!!! on October 29, 2009 at 12:24 p.m. #18

They wouldn't really have to add very much to give characters personal stages anyways. Give Guile the airfield, Ken the drive-in, etc. Just change their music to their themes.

Posted by I CANT SEE on October 29, 2009 at 12:24 p.m. #19

I hate the volcano stage and the temple stage. Both are way too dark. I try to avoid those stages as much as possible.

Posted by Lolento on October 29, 2009 at 12:29 p.m. #20

Volcano is one of my favorite stages too. One of the most beautiful on the game. PS1 game? Huh? I wish my PS1 had textures that good.

And I agree with #9. Part of what makes the Volcano so beautiful is the lack of those background characters. While the fighters have an original style with lots of personality, the people on the stages look like generic 3D models who can't even move their fingers. When they (try to) clap hands it's the most retarded thing ever, particularly the girls on Drive-In At Night, who don't even touch hands.

Posted by -_- on October 29, 2009 at 12:41 p.m. #21

The volcano stage has the best music in the game. I don't see why people want it removed :(

Posted by Garuda on October 29, 2009 at 12:52 p.m. #22

I like that I can cammouflage Seth in that stage. It's hard to see what the hell you're doing when the BG has the same color as your character.

Posted by Xurkey on October 29, 2009 at 1:04 p.m. #23

I have no idea why anyone would want the volcano stage removed. I wasn't even aware people actually disliked the stage so much that Seth would be asked if it is going to be removed.

Weird.

Visually I thought it was pretty awesome, and the music for that stage was great. One of the more memorable stages in SFIV if you ask me.

Posted by Firegod on October 29, 2009 at 1:38 p.m. #25

Yes, i would like to say that we should have more stages and more music, but I agree with seth on this one, why take out when you can just add.

There aint crap wrong with the volcano stage, its my favorite stage and i would be ticked off if they took it out.

Second fav is the schoolground only because of the music.

Posted by vULCAn on October 29, 2009 at 1:41 p.m. #26

The only thing i don't like is you witness a truly awesome battle between Akuma and Gouken in the movie sequence in a volcano and get all pumped...

And then in the game you fight like 200 miles away from it on the brown dirt. And some hints of red.

Posted by Geese on October 29, 2009 at 1:50 p.m. #27

Aside from all the littler things about SSFIV people have been mentioning, I don't really want a new MvC(nor a new TvC really).

I rather have Nintendo or maybe Konami VS. Capcom. The Capcom roster could be the TvC:UAS roster plus about 5-10 more characters(with the removal of the Lost Planet mech) and the Nintendo roster could be the Smash Bros. cast plus and minus a few characters. We don't need multiple Pokemon(Pikachu & Pokemon Trainer or Pikaachu & Mewtwo would be enough) or any Star Fox character that isn't Fox. There are some more obscure Nintendo characters like Captain Rainbow that'd fit in though. And of course the game would play like a Versus game, some kind of mix of the systems in TvC and MvC2. Maybe even have a CvS grove kind of system too.

Posted by Corndog on October 29, 2009 at 1:57 p.m. #28

Remove the volcano stage? What kind of stupid request is that?! "Oh my eyes hurt from all the red" Whine whine whine. Please.... unless the damn lava flows out of your screen and burns you, this epic stage is here to stay.

Posted by cvs2 rulz on October 29, 2009 at 2:10 p.m. #29

Since MVC2 did well, please bring CVS2 to PS3/Xbox 360 next.

I love volcano stage but i hate temples =/ too laggy

Posted by Rave_Zero on October 29, 2009 at 2:11 p.m. #31

The Volcano Stage is totally fine, what I would like to see is:

1) an OPTION to turn off the "white full screen flash" special effect, which can really hurt they eyes in a dark room.

2) an OPTION to completely mute the background music

Posted by Focusflute on October 29, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. #32

Give the volcano stage the "champion edition" treatment

Posted by anon on October 29, 2009 at 2:42 p.m. #39

I like the volcano stage. Its got a real grandiose feel to it. Character specific stages would be cool but not very practical. I think that if they had one stage per two characters, maybe at a different time of day, or something similar, it would be alright.

Posted by Ko on October 29, 2009 at 2:48 p.m. #40

3rd strike still has the best soundtrack. But IV's isn't that shabby, the main problem is that the character specific songs never ever play outside of menues and rival battles.

Posted by j on October 29, 2009 at 2:50 p.m. #41

Posted by @#6 on October 29, 2009 at 4:14 p.m. #47

@#6......The stages in SF4 are the best in fighting game history. Not only graphically, but the way they are interactive with whats going on. No other fighter, let alone SF game, can compare at all to the stages. You must have either never played SF4 or just never pay attention....The market stage has the guy with a chicken and he throws it to the dog, the arena stage has a girl holding up round cards and a big screen in the back and has a guy falling if an ultra is done. The airplane wing can be clipped in the airplane stage, and so on.

Posted by @#9 on October 29, 2009 at 4:24 p.m. #48

You are a sad sad SF3 3rd Suck fan girl!! 3rd Suck is the BANE of the SF series, SF The Movie is 100 times better than that crap. At least that game had a good cast of characters.

Posted by saiferoth on October 29, 2009 at 5:07 p.m. #49

im not here to troll or anything, but, my opinion on the stages/music in SF4 is that there needs to be:

a. atleast 5 more stages
b. classier theme songs (the volcano and schoolground ones are very classy and very nice)
c. classic stages like Ryu's Rooftop (lol at repitition), Sagat's Bhuddist-esque Thailand stage, and stage in Tokyo (resembling Yun/Yang stage) that is dark (and maybe rainy) to be remade with graphics in mind but definently add a little twist to it to make them fresh again.

other than that, theres not too much of a problem; but its annoying to play stages with different daytimes ONLY, noticed how i like that but that there is not too much variation from that which makes it annoying. According to the extra unlockables in the gallery, we WILL infact see the THAILAND stage be implemented in SSF4. The plans WERE all there and i doubt they will exclude it again.

Posted by TL on October 29, 2009 at 5:34 p.m. #50

thank you #43. I wasnt whining about too much red, but it gets to a point when there is just so much generic red, that you can't make heads or tails of moves. I never said it was too bright or hurt my eyes. I just said that ome red moves, ryu's EX Hado or Viper's kick, are verrrry hard to see. Some people arent blesses with 20.20 you know. Put it another way, have you ever watched a live SF4 stream of a match and wish the volcano wasnt the stage? At Bar fights 2, a couple of the more thoughtful players decided to choose the Chinatown stage since it is easier to see.

Posted by TL on October 29, 2009 at 5:41 p.m. #51

Some other issues with the volcano is that it simply lacks detail that the other stages have. The boat has cups that bounce when you get thrown, the chinatown one has chickens street fond carts and a falling sign, the airport has a plane puling in with a destructible wing, the temple has a destructible door with rat, the jungle has snakes that strike and a monkey that jumps etc etc. these are little touches that make a difference that is not evident with the volcano is not up to snuff in terms of detail... its just pools of lava, some ash spewing in the background and thats it. I also disliked the volcano in Ninja Gaiden.

Posted by Joseph on October 29, 2009 at 6:20 p.m. #52

Yeah I thought the volcano stage was pretty cool. But I agree with TL they could have more stuff going on, maybe make the whole stage moving platform going down a flow of lava? The overpass is my favorite though...

Street Fighter has always sucked and always will. Capcom sucks, too. Video games in general suck. TV sucks. Movies suck. Everything sucks. I wish people would listen to me, because I'm the only smart person in the world, and every word I say is gold. If only... then we could redesign everything according to how I like it, and nothing would suck anymore.

Who am I kidding, it would suck if nothing sucked.

(And here's a big ol' "/sarcasm" for anyone who didn't get that.)

This is the second time I've come across people complaining about the volcano stage...at first, I thought that stage had some glitch or whatever.

Is it really just because people don't like the colors? That it hurts their eyes? I've never had any issue with that stage on any front.

Sounds like some people have some crappy TVs.

Posted by but seriously on October 29, 2009 at 10:16 p.m. #59

I mean what is the go with the volcano? They only erupt once every decade or so. And every time they do, everyone rushes to the scene so they can belt each other up in front of it. I mean what gives?

The volcano stage is the best of them all, imo.

However, they're all awesome!

I'll agree char specifc stages would be super.

sf4 is THE best sf ever! but that does mean its the best in everything! stages and sound tracks are nothing to write home about.. no wait they are actually awful! AND there are too few of them! only the train (Russia) stage stands out...

The Volcano Stage in SF4 has the best music in the whole game, who the hell is complaining about it. The music in a stage is more important than how it looks, when it comes to fighting games. And I didn't notice anything wrong with the visuals in that stage anyway.
