Updated: Blog entry with new images of T. Hawk, Dee Jay The official Japanese Super Street Fighter 4 blog was updated again today with a handful of new screen shots showing Dee Jay and T. Hawk, along with new details on what went in to creating these characters.

Jigsaw again translated this post, and the guy deserves a GIGANTIC shout out for his efforts. These posts are long and detailed, and I can only assume that translating this stuff is a fairly involved process, so it's very cool of him to take his time and energy so the whole community can read what Super Street Fighter IV's developers are saying.

Here's his translation along with new images.

What were your feelings when Dee Jay and T Hawk's inclusion was decided?

Okada:
When we were making the console version, our schedule limited us to including only 6 new characters. We were having talks about who we should include, and Mr. Ono said, "Why don't we listen to our fans at events like Comicon, and base our decision on that?" Since the game was in many ways a new version of Street Fighter II, of course it made sense to include characters from the original SF2, but we were also determined to listen to the opinions of our fans. Based on the results from various questionnaires and such, Cammy and Fei Long made the cut, but these two guys didn't (laughs).

You're being quite frank...

Okada:
Yeah, unfortunately they just didn't seem all that popular. But they were still always on our list of characters that we wanted to include in the game. We always felt like, "OK, we'll include them if we can," and even created the basic framework for the two, but eventually we had to create the more popular characters, so in the end they didn't make it.

Tsukamoto:
As a result, we couldn't really call it a complete reunion.

So the development staff are all feeling "finally!", now, huh?

Okada:
Yeah, we must've made those two guys feel awfully lonely, so it's nice to finally be able to invite them this time.

***** Regarding T. Hawk *****

First of all, tell us a little about T. Hawk.

Well, T. Hawk's image has always been that he's simply strong and proud of it. From the start he was neither a technical fighter nor an expert martial artist, and he will still be the type of character who overcomes all obstacles with brute strength. "He's huge!", "he's tough!", "he's strong!", you know, that sort of feeling.

He was the largest character in the Street Fighter 2 series, and as a big guy he will still rely on strength more than cunning.

Simply put, he's strong.

Okada:
Naturally, if that's all there is to him, he wouldn't be much fun, so he will still have the same mid-air moves that he had in Super Street Fighter 2. A huge guy assaulting you with sudden attacks, that's what T. Hawk is all about.

Tsukamoto:
He's big, but he moves fast.

Okada:
Well, he's big and he occasionally moves fast. He's not really a quick character per se. Basically, he's a big character, so his opponent is always under pressure. But as they're trying to keep away from him, T. Hawk will suddenly swoop down on the opponent and throw them. That sudden shift of speed is important too.

When implementing T. Hawk in the game, were there any particular difficulties?

Okada:
Actually, the biggest problem we had was that all the characters might not be able to even jump over him. T. Hawk is really tall!

Tsukamoto:
The trajectory of the jumps are different for all characters, you know. The shorter characters were critical.

Okada:
Ah, well, it did turn out fine in the end, but just barely. The development team was pretty horrified at first though. "He's too big!"

So at that time, you didn't consider changing T. Hawk's size to make him fit in the game better?

Okada:
Not really. T. Hawk's size is essential to the character, so that was never really even discussed. T. Hawk should be huge. Bigger than Zangief, even. That's his defining characteristic. His size makes him an easier target, but I think that's fine. Well, you should always try not to get hit, of course (laughs). But in T. Hawk's case, he can take a hit and still be fine, because he can still retaliate in a big way. It's important to have that link between appearance and gameplay, so that's why we didn't even think of changing things.

What can you tell us about his animations?

Okada:
Actually, T. Hawk was my main character, back in the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo days. His animations are a bit peculiar, and I always thought the way he holds his thumbs in the palm of his hand in his neutral stance was really cute. It looks like something a baby would do.

So you liked that enough to make him your main character? (laughs)

Okada:
No, well, I liked it, but that wasn't the only thing I liked about him. (laughs) I would really love to ask the original developers this, because I really don't know if this was their intention, but when I look at T. Hawk, a lot of his moves remind me of a baseball umpire. His crouching medium punch looks like a 'safe' gesture, and his crouching hard punch looks like 'out'. Even now his movements kinda make me laugh. He was a cool looking character who did all those ridiculous poses with a completely straight face. If I could land his 'safe', his Super Combo was pretty much guaranteed, so I would often jump in and try to hit with the 'safe'.

Tsukamoto:
Sounds like a 'safe' tactic. (laughs)

Okada:
Whenever it worked, the opponent would be 'out'. (laughs) Anyway, those types of poses are definitely unique to T. Hawk. So this time, we're doing our best to preserve that same uniqueness that he had back then. The 'safe' is still in.

Tsukamoto:
'Out' too.

Okada:
'Out' as well, yeah. In any event, this goofy awesomeness is T. Hawk's trademark, so we won't tamper with it. The designers are hard at work creating moves and motions for T. Hawk that will fit in with the world of Street Fighter 4, but needless to say it's all based on memories of that golden era, and the most important thing is to maintain that feeling. Well, this goes for all the characters, really.

What about presentation? It seems his eagle is back as well.

Okada:
Animating animals is a completely different beast from dealing with humans, because their movement has to be really perfect, or else it will look really bad. So when we decided to put the eagle in the game, the animation designers sighed heavily. They were like, "Aah, we're doing this after all, huh... well, guess we need to get to work."

Tsukamoto:
There were times when we'd raise the tension, going "Eagle! Eagle!", but the designers know that a lot of expected from them, and it seems like they were well prepared.

Okada:
Well, I guess there's a limit to how much you can make. Personally, I'd love to see more animals, but of course, the eagle is the most important. It's really part of T. Hawk's character.

What's the current status of T. Hawk's development?

Okada:
T. Hawk has a clearly defined concept of 'dynamic movement', so there was no need to reinvent the wheel, and new moves such as the Focus Attack will feel natural as well. In Street Fighter IV, the screen feels a little more cramped than in the old games. Actually, there are times when the camera will pull back slightly, so in reality it's not that cramped, but the default camera view is kind of zoomed-in to show the characters better. With a guy as big as T. Hawk, this becomes kind of a double-edged sword. His attacks are far-reaching, but it's easy for him to get hit as well, and that balance is something we're paying a lot of attention to. Visually, he's coming along just fine.

"Reinventing the wheel," are you referring to the balance of new and old moves?

Okada:
Right. For example, we've changed his Hawk Dive to the point where you could call it a new move, but many of T. Hawk's moves imitates the movement of birds, and that's something we're careful to maintain.

***** Regarding Dee Jay *****

Next, tell us about Dee Jay

Okada:
Dee Jay is an all-round character, but in a different way from Ryu or Ken. He's got a projectile, anti-air, rush attack, a button mash move... He's got a sliding kick too. Dee Jay has been established as a character who's got all bases covered with a balanced mix of special moves, but being a charge character he's a little tricky. But more than that, we want him to be a refreshing mix of light-hearted and technical, and just a rhythmical, fun to play character.

So he's the exact opposite of T. Hawk then.

Okada:
Yes. He's kind of hit and run, finding a rhythm to your land attacks. For example, finding a flow like "I'll do a jump in hard kick and crouching medium kick, if that connects I'll do a Fireball," it's fun to come up with those kinds of attack patterns with Dee Jay, so I hope people will enjoy that.

If you were to compare Dee Jay to any of the current characters, who would it be?

Okada:
Speaking in terms of other characters, I'd call him an 'offensive Guile'. They both have similar charge moves, but while Guile is the type of character who waits for his opponent to mess up before he attacks, Dee Jay is more likely to annoy his opponent and goad him into making mistakes through a constant barrage of attacks.

Tsukamoto:
And he wants to finish it off with a big move. So he has to stay on his opponent, the second he lets go, he's done for.

Okada:
Yeah, it's like the joystick will be in motion constantly. Talking about characters like Guile and Dee Jay, you could say there are characters who want the opponent to jump in, versus characters who want to jump in.

Tsukamoto:
Guile definitely wants the opponent to jump in at him.

Okada:
And Dee Jay wants to jump in himself. He's got good moves against jumping too, though, his sliding kick is a great anti-air and even lets him move forward while keeping his charge. Dee Jay is synonymous with that sliding kick, and of course it will be as strong as ever this time too.

Sounds like he'll be a tough opponent for some characters?

Okada:
From the opponent's point of view, Dee Jay's onslaught might feel unstoppable. But in reality, if you know what you are doing, you'll be able to stop him. When playing against Dee Jay, you don't want him to get too close. In other words, you have to keep him at bay, somehow. It's important to take charge and not get stuck in your opponent's rhythm.

By the way, you can't talk about Dee Jay without mentioning that huge smile of his.

Okada:
Dee Jay is really showing a lot of expression this time. It's difficult to make a character like him look serious, but he has plenty of different facial expressions. The designers went through both pain and joy creating them, so I hope you'll enjoy seeing Dee Jay make a variety of different faces. The 3D graphics give room for a lot more expressiveness in his movement too, so the designers are doing their best to create a lot of flashy dance moves and such for him.

Dee Jay was an interesting character to look at even back in Super Street Fighter 2, wasn't he?

Okada:
Putting the gameplay aside and speaking from a strictly aesthetic point of view, Dee Jay represented some of the best pixel art in SSF2. He was pretty much the pinnacle of pixel art at that time.

Tsukamoto:
The first time I saw SSF2, I was pretty surprised. "Oh, I get it! MAXIMUM!". (laughs) "It reads no matter which side he's on!" I thought it was brilliant. Back then, you were constrained to symmetrical designs, since you had to be able to mirror the sprites. So having a 'B' or something on a character's back was no good, because it would look strange when mirrored. Seeing the word MAXIMUM along his long legs must've brought a great sense of accomplishment. It's a cool sounding word, and the idea worked great.

Well then, please tell us about any troubles you had implementing Dee Jay.

Okada:
Well, we mentioned before that he's kind of an 'offensive Guile', but simply making him like that makes him a little too strong. He has so many tools, and he's so fun to play, so the difficult part was to think about the balance with other characters, without getting rid of what makes him fun in the first place. You might remember Dee Jay being a powerful character, and I think the most important thing is to tweak him without him losing that aspect. Simply making someone weak isn't difficult.

How are you feeling about the characters right now?

Okada:
Well, there's still a lot of fine tuning to be made, but they seem to be shaping up to be capable characters, so that's good. We've been thinking about both Dee Jay and T. Hawk ever since we had to leave them out of the last game, so I feel we've had time for a lot of preparation. So I'd say it feels pretty good.

***** For the fans *****

A message to all the fans of T. Hawk and Dee Jay, please.

Okada:
These two are definitely minor characters. And for just that reason, I really hope that everyone who thought, "I'm not surprised they didn't make it," will give these characters a try. When I use them now, I think both of them are more fun than ever. To all of you who mained one of these characters like I did back in the day, and to all of you who have waited so long, I just want to say, "finally they're back!" I hope you'll enjoy the return of your favorite character. I know I am!

We're not out to disappoint anyone, but we're finally bringing these characters back, while spicing them up with what makes Street Fighter 4 special. We're mixing things up a little, in a good way; creating new, fun takes on these two characters. I really want you to check out these guys' new flashy Ultra Combos for yourselves, and I hope you'll be happy with how the two turn out, so please look forward to playing them!

I really don't care about T.hawk.. it'll be interesting to see how capcom implement him though.. i think he will be a gief minus good combos! but its all cool as long as we get Makoto!

The details provided in the rumors about the other characters seem legit. Doesn't seem like something you could just make up. I want to hear about the other characters NOW!!! But capcom just loves torturing us. They know we know, but they still want us to wait. LOL

Posted by Tottem on October 20, 2009 at 10:40 a.m. #19

THawk received like 1% of the votes (including mine) when they were making the SF4 poll. So Im not shocked people aren't all hyped to see him. I won't deny that his character design is overall super lame but he was my fav character in ST and HD stylistically. So I for one am glad he's in the game. Although, I feel with the new system, he's not going to be as technical as his ST counterpart. He has no lariat, but I guess we'll see how spammable his 360 throw is.

T. Hawk is a beast. I dunno what anyone is talking about. I agree his disign is on the boring side but his damage output is godly. T. Hawk is a monster in the right hands.

T. Hawk = Village People

Why? Because he's Native American?
Racist much?

Posted by Ugh... on October 20, 2009 at 11:41 a.m. #23

I've seen enough screenshots of T.Hawk and Deejay to make me sick of them already. I've known what they look and play like since the early 90's.

Either show us the new characters, reveal who the returning characters are, or frig off. I don't give a crap what T.Hawk's favourite food is. I don't care that Sagat is more than 7 feet tall and is somehow only 170 lbs. I don't need to know anything about the story, JUST GIVE US MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHO THE NEW FIGHTERS ARE.

no more sarcasm and racism to Indians pls.
as for his Design.

its just perfect.i found nothing boring to his desing just like other characters which is desing is a replica to others.

Maybe Capcom is just buying time because they screwed up and they're not going to get 8 characters done by Q1 next year.

They're gearing us up for a head swap of T.Hawk. They're going to make him a Canadian character called "Eh" and they're going to turn his vest into a denim jacket and he's going to be wearing a goalie mask and carrying a hockey stick. His bio will say he loves maple syrup and snow, and dislikes nothing because he's too nice.

HOLY CRAP, IT'S TRUE:

Posted by Firegod on October 20, 2009 at 2:12 p.m. #37

T Hawk and Dee Jay were already known as characters who were already pre made and just didnt make it.....so this is nothing new at all, heck, capcom probably has tons of pictures of them from BEFORE sf4 was released on arcade lol. So ya, I refuse to see this as anything new, more as a "bout time......." but not new and I hope that capcom respects the feelings of the fans that feel that way.

dam... i dont like these characters what a waste of 2 slots..

anyways i got confirmation from a user in kotaku comments..

he said hakan will be an arabic grappler obsessed with oil.. right under that was juri, evil asian girl working for seth..

everyone will have 2 ultras.. and u dont have to choose both are ready for use in game!

yeah im not happy about an arabic character... capcom nobody is asking for it so why do it? put in abels little buddy, the girly abel.. I DONT WANT AN ARABIC FIGHTER AND NOBODY IS ASKING FOR IT! DAM U CAPCOM

Calm down with the "SHOW NEW CHARACTERS OR NO BUYS!!!?!" bullsh it. You're all gonna buy the game anyway. Capcom could release photos of new characters in a month and a half and you'd still cream your pants. And whats the point of hating on the arabic character? Not like his ultra move blows up the twin towers you morons. I'm hispanic and i find that retarded. You guys shouldv'e been in those towers when they were attacked. America doesn't need wastes of life like you.............and I think Birdie would have been kickass in SSF4, personally.

Stop saying nobody wants this or that. A lot of people wanted the original cast and being that nobody has used Hakkan I find it amazing that nobody seems to like him here. Does everyone here really judge books by covers only? It's amazing that some of you hate on SRK when you are so quick to shoot out uninformed opinions and claim them as highly agreed upon fact.

Extremely random but does anyone think that Remy and Makoto would make a good couple? Cuz I kinda do. Like after he stopped hating fighters he'd want a fighter chick. He's probably effeminate enough and she's probably butch enough for the relationship to work.

Many fans all over the world (ryu/ken fanboys excluded) waited for them patiently and now their dream is becoming a reality.

I agree with the Capcom team that T. Hawk is a giant character. He made Zangief look small in Turbo and in this game he appears to be even bigger. It is very funny to think that they were concerned about some characters not being able to jump over him lol.

Kind of sad to see the M disappear off of Dee Jay's head but otherwise he looks great and I can already begin to feel the pressure of his offense like I did in 1994.

If Alex is in the game he would be god tier cuz he is the a charge and circle based attacks and he would have the stun gun headbut which would paralyze slow moving characters and finish them off with the hyperbomb

GOD Tier Bring out Alex kets start the Petition now

Posted by cuttyb87 on October 20, 2009 at 11:16 p.m. #81

@ Hyperbomb I like Alex man and I think he is probably the best grappler ever he kills Gief and Abel
y was Abel even in the game??? Alex is way better anyway I like the idea of Alex but I think Capcom wants o follow the storyline so we would settle for Tom who is his Mentor and should have the same attacks

I'm looking forward to seeing the other completely new character "Hakan".
No one (outside of CAPCOM) has even seen him yet. Why judge like that so soon? I'm sure if we had access to EventHubs and other SF-related sites as easy as we have now, many fans would've gone WTF with the cast of SF3 a decade or so ago when it first came out. Time will tell.
And hopefully Time will give us = Birdie! and RolentoOoO!

Cheers,

Hopefully less 'freaks' going forward.

The sad thing about Street Fighter is that the online feature and open community enables completely retarded players to participate in the game and discussions. They cheat as much as they can because they are cheaters by nature. Especially those cowardly players who can barely pull off a move and rely on unreasonable characters like Fagat.

#97, You are the reason why most forums need user registration.

They need to lower Ken's ridiculous priority and give him much more combos so that Ken players win because of SKILL, not because of mashing. Any random idiot can pick up Ken, mash QCF+P and win some matches. They must change Ken so that you can't win because of luck, but only because of strategy and technique. He must be more like Ryu, but with his own types of combos. There's nothing wrong with flashy moves, as long as you can't win matches by mashing. Most experienced players bait Ken's near-invincible moves and punish them but the baiting gets very boring after a while.

They need to add so many combos to Ken that the average Ken is played by versatile skilled players, not by mashers. Experienced players can beat current Ken's, but the matches are simply stupid because it's so n00bish.

Posted by aqua on October 21, 2009 at 6:34 a.m. #99

@ #98

WOW! are you sure you are talking about SF4's ken not 3s? his combos are fine but priority he aint got! ken is way worse than he should ever be! SF4's incarnation of ken is the worst ever hands down!

I'm sorry to say this but any player having a difficult time with scrubby-flowchart kens is a scrub himself!

@ #99

Everyone responds with "If you can't beat Ken, then...". It's not about being able to beat him. Experienced fighters can beat him. That's not the issue at all. It's the play style which is needed to beat Ken which is annoying. Ken is faster than Ryu. Ryu has more combos and a better zoning game but only defensive players will enjoy beating Ken. Offensive shotos need to wait for ages for Ken to attack because a head-to-head move will always result in a trade or loss.

If a Ken player loses all the time, he needs to go back to training mode. Any skilled shoto can beat a lot of players using Ken. I don't use Ken a lot but when I do, I beat a lot of Ryu's and Akuma's without breaking a sweat.

Because they were in the videos on street fighter 4 pro logues so i think that they should be in the game. Besides it will kill the whole Charlie is dead rumor... so

Please bring back Charlie and Yun capcom !!!

Posted by JerseyFame on October 21, 2009 at 10:05 a.m. #105

In the article they state that Guile is a character who wants opponents to jump at him.

That is not the case in this game because his flash kick isnt dominant anymore and can consistently be beaten by normal moves.

Textbook Guile play no longer works...you have to be creative and very lucky now when facing a very good opponent. Especially a shoto, so I think they need to acknowledge that.

Posted by cowboy_soultaker on October 21, 2009 at 10:11 a.m. #106

@105
a "tatsumaki" movement, better character design, hi and low projectiles, better "flash kick". I'd say he's more likely then charlie. He's different enough to be the "ken" to guile's "ryu".

@103
Yun, Yang and Adon are in cutscenes. But I notice you leave out Yang even though he's in the same cutscene as yun. Sad :-(

DeeJay will be god tier, so all sagat players can pick up a new main.

Posted by black rufus on October 21, 2009 at 10:14 a.m. #107

@New Characters!!!

The three black guy picks are the original (and better IMO) design of Rufus before they made him a fat, disgusting white guy.

Posted by aqua on October 21, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. #108

@ #101

"Ken is faster than Ryu"

what are you talking about? Ryu is, frame by frame, faster in almost every single aspect.

"Offensive shotos need to wait for ages for Ken to attack because a head-to-head move will always result in a trade or loss."

any one who plays ken defensively is an idiot! or maybe fighting one! the only thing going for ken is rush down and mix ups.. plus his anti air DP is way inferior to ryu's DP.

"If a Ken player loses all the time, he needs to go back to training mode. Any skilled shoto can beat a lot of players using Ken. I don't use Ken a lot but when I do, I beat a lot of Ryu's and Akuma's without breaking a sweat."

i think you misspelled ken.. its written like this.. SAGAT!

Posted by JW on October 21, 2009 at 10:20 a.m. #109

My man Justin said that adon will NOT be included in SSF4 because sagat kicked his ass in the cut scene! check his interview on FREE1UP channel on YT.

Posted by Sigh on October 21, 2009 at 10:23 a.m. #110

So they admit to deejay being an amped up guile...which will now make guile lower-tier than he already is. Guile is one of the originals. Bring the guile of old back and with a new move like everyone else is getting.

dudkey can work cuz he is a combo fighter not just a brute like Balrog he is finesse he is the Ken to RYU Balrog so he is needed in the game

Posted by Cactus on October 21, 2009 at 12:44 p.m. #118

@105

Remy has a lot more options and moves a lot quicker than Guile. He has a qcb+k overhead/crossup, three throws - his neutral is good for setups, and a high and low projectile. He can pressure way better than Guile. Plus I prefer Remy's design to Guile's, but again, I don't expect a lot of support in that.

T.Hawk is a clone of Zangief????
what on earth i am going to hear in this place.man when you say that i can understand 2 reasons.
a)probably you haven't played in your life any other title of Street Series
and b)your critism is completely pointless.

@#28
i dont know about some others that pretend to like T.Hawk.
i play T.Hawk all my life so don't say that to all because you dont know.
in fact i m wondering if T.Hawk is very strong in SSFIV and his rank in tiers be very high....how many players (who dispise T.Hawk and other characters) are going to play with him.
if the number will increase because of that ill lauph and cursed all these players.because they are not going to choose a character because they like but because Tier list is going to choose for them.
this is going to every character though.
especially if i see Ryu nerfed in the game and an upgraded Ken it will be hillarius to see many Ryu players to play Ken after that.im just waiting thats all.
Anyhow if T.Hawk is going to be low tier i still play with him.i dont care.
i played T.Hawk back then in Turbo when he was the lowest Tier character and i play him now even if he is the same.i dont change my main character.

All I ask for is Charlie. For those who say hes exactly the same as guile, they're as different as dan and akuma. Charlie is more of an offensive "guile" than even dee jay. They can add whoever else afterwards. if Charlie doesn't deserve to be in this game, then neither do Ibuki or makoto who should be about 6 years old at this time line.

Posted by @v#124 on October 21, 2009 at 10:14 p.m. #125

Can you explain how is charlie different from guile?

i just played him in alpha 3 and he is Guile with different skin and voice! i mean every single normal is the same! his signature c.hp, c.mp, f.hp, f.hk, b.mk and all of the jump ins! not to mention his specials are the same too! i mean how can you even compare this to guile vs deejay or dan vs akuma! come on man.

Also. trying to be acurate with the sf story is just stupid.. we need Makoto hands down! maybe add dudely too!

Posted by Neglect on October 21, 2009 at 11:20 p.m. #126

No love for Sodom? The guy powerbombs people and uses sais for crying out loud. How awesome is that?

Posted by Nash = Charlie on October 21, 2009 at 11:33 p.m. #127

Well in the SF story - Alpha or Zero in Japan is before 2
(not too detailed as it gets crazier and worse when you do that)

Charlie is the master of his style who taught Guile. Why they're best buds, why Charlie can sonic boom with one hand, and has a 2 hit flashkick that is arguably cooler looking too - and the super version.

He even has that downward air version in the VS games he's in. By Alpha 3 he was slowed down too much to be able to keep up with those faster characters and near broken V-Ism juggles.

His flood cargo pants prob don't translate well to Street Fighter 4 though, going from how Guile looks in ALT costume.

Posted by Sodom in the Mad Gear Gang on October 21, 2009 at 11:38 p.m. #128

Sodom is pretty fun, rekka style special with different types/hitboxes.

Reversal running with his weapons attack after hit in the air.

Powerbomb is cool and that powerbomb + run to put them on fire super is killer.

Sorta makes up for him being the "American who pretends to be Japanese, too obsessed with the culture." But at least he's no Rufus. Jerkbags @ Capcom and Justin Wong saying in Japan Famitsu interviews he actually likes the Fat man stereotype American character Rufus. Damn it.

Posted by anon on October 22, 2009 at 7:31 a.m. #129

Whys everyone always hating on Rufus? Yeah he's stereotypical but so's everyone else in the game. Just look at Dhalsim (Indian Yogi) or Dee Jay (Jamaican Musician) or T. Hawk (Native-American Brave.) Yeah Rufus is a fat american, so what? Russians don't complain of Zangief being a streroid injected bear wrestler.

Posted by @129 on October 22, 2009 at 7:39 a.m. #130

It's because he's a hideous character that isn't half as fun to play if they just invested some better character design. Plus he encroaches on a lot of "holy grail" type storylines. Ken's rival should be Ryu, not Rufus, for example.

I'm not offended by stereotypes, I just think of it as a waste of a character slot for a cooler character.

Posted by @130 on October 22, 2009 at 8:11 a.m. #131

I think Rufus is very fun to play. Grant it his design isn't the best in the world but he has a very cool fighting style. He's sort of ridiculous like Dan, only actually good at fighting. I do wonder how he manages to stay fat when he trains so much. You'd think he'd be built more like Honda.

Posted by Rufus Dufus on October 23, 2009 at 3:57 a.m. #132

-The first New American Street Fighter character in how long and he's a joke with a boob physics design. Mr.Wizard fat dude, JWong and Yoshi Ono, Fat dudes, fine. Not every American is or likes it. JWong telling Japan game press he likes it, is like its okay to have more stereotypes. Russian players prob. exist with reasons to not like Zang, but they didn't buy millions of copies and get the game marketed to them.

-They could have had a much cooler character and broadened the playerbase a lot if what Rufus could have been was made instead. Black (American) fighter who's not a thug, gambler, gangster, etc? Why not in SF4?

Birdie is like a Black "Chav" knife wielding stereotype, from Britain right? Balrog is a hired goon Mike Tyson clone. DeeJay they made a smiley Jamaican, Sean they made Brazilian and real weak when it was found out he was any good. Dudley, the fans are all mixed up about his origin and ethnicity.

-Do Americans learn/master Karate now? Yes, not soo mystical & exclusive anymore, don't have to pretend and make up a style themselves how Rufus did. Do Black Americans do that too? Of course, play games? Yes. Do Americans watch MMA/UFC now and blew that up big?

-Why couldn't Rufus be a younger Black American who knows karate? (Or the big giant afro 70's Kareem vs Bruce Lee Game of Death movie character, if they wanted another iconic stereotype) If he had to be another Shoto clone-how people thought right away, fine but that's not progressive considering Japan has had MMA forever too and there's tons of other styles out there.

-But Capcom Japan would have probably kept that fried chicken bucket on the black kid so its probably better this way.
