Seth Killian responded to a request on the Capcom Forums where a user asked about having an option to create your own character in a Street Fighter game. How come there hasn't been a "create-a-fighter" option so players can create a character they wish to use for online play, etc? — John
Seth: Although it's fun sometimes, you need look no further than the millions of bad M.U.G.E.N. games to see the effects of "create a character" could be on Street Fighter. Sure it's occasionally funny, but they're so wonky you can't even really play them.
Pimp hats, platform shoes, and clown noses are for the Namco games :P Capcom is about icons (even if they're a bit comical sometimes) and about the fighting. Do ANY Tekken/Soul Calibur characters have the presence or resonance of the original Street Fighter 2 cast? Tekken is a successful and fun franchise, but that kind of customization is a big reason why the characters seem a bit interchangeable and generic.
We also work really hard to balance the games, so letting people make all their own moves, etc., would be too much. There's a ton of customization in Street Fighter, but it's in the way you USE the tools we provide. There are not just different characters, there's a million different WAYS to play the characters -- that's the essence of what keeps SF fresh and fun after approximately 1.21 jigawatts of games...
