Checking up on Korean SF4 champion Poongko
Poongko, who plays Ryu, is the reigning Street Fighter 4 champion from Korea. He made a name for himself with his outstanding execution skills and very aggressive style of play, although he lost to Iyo, Justin Wong and Daigo Umehara at the national SF4 competition held here in America.
Since that time, not much has been said about the guy, but a few new videos popped up featuring him on YouTube.
So, what do you think? Have his skills evolved to the point you think he could take on the best of the best? To check out another video and leave your comments, click the link below.
You can find more videos on Poongko on KingOfTekken6's YouTube channel.

I like his style of play, but I think he'd still lose to J.Wong and Daigo. He looks like he improved a bit, but Justin and Daigo improved a lot more.
He put up an alright fight against them before, I think he'd get his ass completely kicked now.

that guy has the entire tournament and its still going
man poongko is hilarious, he did the fake handshake thing to his opponent! and hes cocky ass hell
i love how big gaming is in korea and the tournament presentation is the best in the world. they show the opponents reaction after the match.

Poonkgo execution is f-cking bad ass! Guy is spot on with most of his combos and stuff... but he still does dumb sh!t he shouldn't do. Against Boxer he left himself open a ton of times trying to shoryuken.
Daigo wouldn't do that kind of stuff, so he'd get owned if he played again.

and i love how korean players taunt their opponents lol
Posted by Purple monster on November 14, 2009 at 3:29 a.m. #5
im nt sure bout ur comment tbh it is true dat the top few hav improved bt i doubt he wil get completely ownd by them. his style of play is unique compared to most ryu players so it will be difficult to adjust to the style against him. i do agree his aggressiveness is a weakness bt den agen even top players make mistakes n wen dat happens i fink he will take advantage with his agressiveness

I love watching Poongko play, one of my absolute favorites. And he's an awsome player with whatever character aswell.
Posted by gaijin nick on November 14, 2009 at 5:33 a.m. #7
He would definately get owned if he played Wong or Daigo. I really like his style though. His execution is great, but his mind games are weak when you compare them to Wong or Daigo... especially Daigo. That guy's a genious.
Posted by omgeee on November 14, 2009 at 5:39 a.m. #8
yea wong or daigo would murder poonkgo now....
Posted by vmc on November 14, 2009 at 5:45 a.m. #9
Daigo makes justice for the "beast" title. He reads his oponents very f***ing fast and hardly commits any mistakes during a fight. Poongko sometimes is very reckless, leaving a bunch of openings during the fight, things Wong or Umehara don't do. Yeah, he would be beaten badly...

I really envy how Korea's tournament scene feels like your watching a sports game. They have a stage, replays, and a seated audience.
Evo is our biggest tourney, and it's done in a Hotel, a nice hotel, but still a hotel. Also if your not there, you see it on a sh*ty live feed. Maybe Evo can strike some deal with G4 or something? I would love to see these things on my TV.

Korea is wake-up reversal town.
Amateur stuff -_-

those commentators are as annoying as the new SSF4 announcer!
Posted by J on November 14, 2009 at 8:32 a.m. #13
So many whiffed DP's and so many that went unpunished.
That wasn't a very great showing for either guy.
Posted by Henry on November 14, 2009 at 8:46 a.m. #14
He just has a very different playstyle against how a Japanese player is.
I think Poongko is raw, untapped potential. Just because a person plays recklessly doesn't mean they'll get beat down. Those players nerves were both shot, you could just tell from all the openings they missed.
Poongko has great mindgames, and I feel like once he starts to level up in that aspect, he will start using his "reckless" playstyle to his advantage for high risk/high reward situations but knowing when to spot those opportunities and force errors in his offensive playstyle. It's like playing Ken but with a better moveset.

Fu*ck, I wanted him to loose. His face pisses me off big time.
Good player but ugly faced cu*nt with stupid attitude.
Man his face is so ugly..

I really like the replays lol, would love to see a slow mo of me dealing some big damage :).
Posted by nsc on November 14, 2009 at 9:27 a.m. #19
cocky as hell. ryu players act like they are so good when its 90 percent ryu 10 percent the player . jesus christ he is the best character in the game. everyone is always like sagat is broken no ryu is broken and the reason knowone says that is b/c they play ryu. i mean go online and its like ryu ryu ryu f*ck ryu and f*ck poonface
Posted by @nsc on November 14, 2009 at 9:46 a.m. #20
I totally agree with u on that. Im friggin tired of every person online using Ryu and acting like they are a friggin awesome if they get with u an early combo. I'm curious to what happens when a ryu players gets completely destroyed by another one.
Posted by @nsc on November 14, 2009 at 10:11 a.m. #21
I have no problems with Ryus and I still think Sagat is "better" if you just want to go by tiers. I main Bison and Chun and no more then a handful of times do Ryus get the best of me online. Way too predictable and most of them all play the same.
Anyways, I love the professionalism SF4 is given in Korea. We need something like that to happen here for SF4. Then again we need our StarCraft like S. Korea had/has. Something that will push tournament/professional gaming to the next level and start to be taken seriously. We need a Slayers_Boxer to push the game there. Wong could become that but he would have to become more humble and be someone people want to replicate. Not have disdain for.
Posted by xnjay on November 14, 2009 at 11:03 a.m. #22
I always thought Laugh was the best ryu in korea
Posted by SSJ3X on November 14, 2009 at 11:14 a.m. #23
hm... personally, he hasn't improved much, but you can never tell by judging how he plays in a video to when you actually play him. From what I'm seeing, he still has the same reckless rush style, there's a slight improvement in the footsie department, but you can't really weigh how well he's gotten against the two guys he fought. There were so many missed opportunities to punish and because of that you really can't distinguish if he's improved or not. I mean he even missed combos after focus attacks by trying to chain the light jab into either a crouching heavy punch, crouching medium punch, or crouching medium kick into Hurricane kick.
If you put him up against like of the Japanese or American Pros in a first to ten set, I don't think he would be able to win it, and if it was a Ryu mirror match against Daigo or Fuudo, his Ryu wouldn't last long.
Posted by :P on November 14, 2009 at 11:15 a.m. #24
Fantastic player, awesome execution. But, he would still get murdered by any top Japanese player.
Posted by ? on November 14, 2009 at 11:31 a.m. #25
How is he playing with his eyes closed?
Posted by Obv1ous on November 14, 2009 at 11:48 a.m. #26
As people have already said, I also like his aggressive playing style and crazy execution.
Really love the way SFIV tournaments are represented in Korea. Models, flashing lights, posters and Replays look really awesome.
Those taunts are real cocky and after the match, expressions are frickin' funny to look at. :D

Poongko makes Justin Wong tame when it comes to arrogance and looking like a smug bastard.
Posted by RaiDoru on November 14, 2009 at 11:58 a.m. #28
I love his play style as his matches are interesting, when he plays really cocky he makes a lot of mistakes, kinda like how he lost a match against the boxer player. But I think if he did play carefully he might beat daigo/justin wong.
Posted by TSmoov on November 14, 2009 at 12:41 p.m. #29
Second vid, I hear Shadows Fall.
Posted by Jack on November 14, 2009 at 12:59 p.m. #30
he's pretty cocky for a guy who has gotten worse since he fought Daigo. I guess Justin and Daigo will need to bring him back to earth again
Posted by desu on November 14, 2009 at 1:47 p.m. #31
lol dudes its KOREA esports, they are paid to be cocky in the matches and stuff its part of the show.

makes evo look like a swapmeet tournament meet
Posted by blahblah on November 14, 2009 at 2:36 p.m. #33
The tournament presentation was amazing..
Poongko is good, but honestly, I think he's a bit of overhype. Sure his playstyle is more agressive, but in all honesty, he's not very good yet.
Posted by RedGuile on November 14, 2009 at 2:54 p.m. #34
He's alright not that great, all those combos are simple! Daigo and JW will kill him.
Posted by Medaral on November 14, 2009 at 3:14 p.m. #35
He's way too cock sure. He missed the execution on lot of combos. There were a few times in the Boxer matches where his finger slipped off the button or something. Also, what was with the total shift to defense in the boxer matches in the final round. That's like something you'd see online.
Posted by korean on November 14, 2009 at 3:20 p.m. #36
the korean language is annoying and sounds bad as proven by the announcers. plus those players are ugly as hell

Poongko Thank You for sharing your fighting videos!
I was very impressed by your ability with fighting in SF4.
I am training every day to enter tournaments and hope to have results like you do!
Maybe soon I will share my fighting videos with you.
Hope to be seeing you at tournaments!!
Posted by @Henry on November 14, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. #38
Sorry you dont know what your talking about..
Being Reckless is different from having a strategy in mind while doing Purposely getting hit.
Like Zangief maybe.
Iyo for example is getting good at trading hits, as long as he is getting the better end of the trade. I'm not sure totally how to explain but you see a lot of it in the SBO matches.
Posted by bunch of homos on November 14, 2009 at 8:51 p.m. #39
Anyone who keeps crying about how these men "look so ugly" must be totally homo. I bet they would be pleased and wacking if they saw handsome guys playing.

I think Top 50 japanese and top 10 american can beat poongko. japan>>>>america>>korea
Posted by baz on November 15, 2009 at 12:53 a.m. #43
he plays better than me, thats for sure, like his run in huricane kick jab combos
Posted by Lars on November 15, 2009 at 1:20 a.m. #44
Wow what a little cocky bastard. His parents probably disowned him for having bad "micro" in Starcraft.
Posted by Madness on November 15, 2009 at 5:33 a.m. #45
Well, the good part is that he's not as blatantly and blindly offensive as he last was, which means he should put up a MUCH better fight against the other three if they meet again.
Now that i am also more experienced, i can read frame data and see that those combos aren't hard to do at all, not even the corner combo on guile...it's actually very easy to do that
That match shows why alot of people consider ryu a worse match than sagat for guile. I want to see what he can do against Daigo and company now that he doesn't throw caution to the wind, but it's just REALLY hard for me to be impressed with ryu players
Posted by yo on November 15, 2009 at 12:04 p.m. #46
one think I am sure is that he can own all the stupid Americans
Posted by Q on November 15, 2009 at 4:56 p.m. #47
He knows his combos, but most of the time he doesn't seem to have a plan aside from rushdown. He got 2 FAs in the balrog match and didn't cap on them, and against guile he FADC'd out of a shoryuken for no reason, maybe he was just being a cocky son of a bitch though.
Posted by jrmann on November 15, 2009 at 7:06 p.m. #48
@Q - FADC'ing out of a srk doesn't make someone a bad player, its about switching things up and not being predictable. a lot of people throw out dp's at times, im guessing he probably thought it wasn't going to hit and was going to be blocked and was maybe setting up for something bigger after wards. playing mind games and setting people up for bigger and better combos win matches. but im sure you already knew that..
@everyone else who is trying to talk sh-it on the korean champ, of course hes going to be big headed and talk sh-it if he's one of the best in his country b/c thats the main competition that he has on a daily basis. Same thing for our "american champ" Jwong. smug ass mofo but i dont see everyone on here talking out on Jwong saying is a homo blah blah he needs to stop talking sh-it bc everyone time he goes up against a good jap. player or a daigo he gets 10-2.
they're all good in their own respects etc etc.
its nice to see a player using different strats as a ryu player and not trying to "be the next daigo" or sh-it like that. kudos nigga kudos

poongko is bad :/
Posted by Bad on November 15, 2009 at 9:47 p.m. #50
Hes too reckless, he just needs for someone to capitalize on him.
Posted by OG on November 15, 2009 at 10:01 p.m. #51
He was more impressive back in the day. Now he just looks too aggressive and seems to miss a lot. SF4 isn't just about combos.
Posted by Mondo Fabulous on November 15, 2009 at 11:47 p.m. #52
does poongko always throw out those jabs or is it something he does in the ryu vs balrog match up?
Posted by Wilken on November 16, 2009 at 12:17 a.m. #53
I think Poon will be a very good SF player in the future, but this probably won't happen so soon.

korean invited mago, momochi, kindev, kyabetsu to korean TV tournament.
these JP top players fought korean top players and result is
