Seth and Sven cover Super Street Fighter 4's net code Capcom's Christian Svensson (Sven) and Seth Killian were communicating with the fans to clarify some things on Super Street Fighter 4's net code and spectator systems.

Here's what they had to say.

If you cannot talk about the netcode yet, then maybe you can answer this. How are you going to handle spectators in order to minimize lag? For example, is it possible that the spectators have nothing to do with the two players in the match? Even if it means spectating would be out of sync with the actual match. Any information or response will be greatly appreciated. — AlboShinobi

Sven: Yes... thought has been given to these issues... but alas, I can not share details at this time. Stay tuned.

Why is there such secrecy on this matter? — PKT

Sven: It's less secrecy and more that everything isn't "set in stone". If we told you, "Oh, this is how we're dealing with it," when there's still loads of testing and optimization that may cause us to deviate from a given path, well then, effectively we've told you something that isn't ultimately true... and in turn, we hear complaints.

Rather than tell you what we're trying to do, we'd rather make sure we have things baked before we go making promises (and when we use words like "may" or "try" consumers often hear "you promised!!!1!1!!one!").

Also a few people remarked about the statement that the Japanese development team is trying to "preserve" the net code for Super Street Fighter IV, even with spectators. This comment was taken from this blog post.

Capcom's Seth Killian added this note on the subject.

Seth: Lol. The "preserving" the netcode stuff is misleading translation at its finest, not something significant (why is it in quotes at all?)

What the team is referring to is simply that it can get difficult to sync all the spectators with the competing players themselves, in terms of image AND voice. Basically the issue they are struggling with is that sometimes the spectators will be watching at slightly different speeds, so that if I'm across the country and watching a few frames behind my friend, I might still hear him cheering his buddy in victory before the final blow has landed for me. It's not a major issue, applies only to spectating, and is still in development. Geez! :)

Also, on another good note, Seth added that, "Yes, you CAN record and save your matches at will," for those of you who were wondering about the replay system.

All sounds good to me. It would be a nice option to have to be able to save replays locally.

Also, lol at the number of people who already started throwing their rattles out of the pram on Capcom's translated comment on "preserving" the netcode. Let's just wait and see...

That will quell some of the bitching that goes on around here, but I will still keep my expectations in check regarding the netcode.

anyone who got their panties in a twirl in the first place and "complained"

i for one very much look forward to it.

thanks again.

Definitely feel like Capcom isn't doing GGPO on this. Sounds like they're building this one from the ground up. This can either be good (if it's better than GGPO) or bad (if it's like the current net code for SFIV). Let's hope it's the former.

Being able to record demos at will- finally!

Thank you JESUS. Now why the hell couldn't they have specified these things earlier so we didn't DEFACATE our PANTS?

SSFIV is going to be the greatest fighting game ever.

Posted by Lonestar451 on November 11, 2009 at 8:25 a.m. #15

Why would developers build new code for a game that is going to be priced significanly less than the original? Don't hold your breath guys. Capcom is going to adjust their damage scales in addition to a few new modes of play and a couple more irrelevant fighters. It's been their formula for the passed 20 years, rinse and repeat.

@machine king

Yo dawg.I know you think ssf4 will be great, and imma let you finish, but shaq fu is one the greatest fighting games ever.ONE OF THE GREATEST FIGHTING GAMES EVER.

Posted by End Game on November 11, 2009 at 8:41 a.m. #17

This game is all I need for video games. The only other games I will get are the multi-player co-op games my friends love. I beat those games, sell them to GameStop, and keep playing SF!

Posted by AkumaFiend on November 11, 2009 at 8:54 a.m. #18

Its shouldn't be too hard for them to do. I mean, look at BlazeBlue, they have most of those things and the online mode is smooth.

Posted by AkumaFeind on November 11, 2009 at 8:59 a.m. #19

Also, I laugh at all the suckers who think capcom is going to lower teh Price of SSF4 significantly. Ill put money down the price will be 10 dollars below regular. Maybe at 49.99. I would be EXTREMELY surprised if they go lower than that.

Posted by ^ on November 11, 2009 at 9:11 a.m. #20

Gamestop already has this priced at 39.99 I believe?

Posted by scrubs on November 11, 2009 at 9:14 a.m. #21

why dont you scrubs just try joining the scene, wait no, you're scrubs.

Posted by zxzxz on November 11, 2009 at 9:24 a.m. #22

nothing but side-talk. he still isn't willing to commit at all to the netcode being changed in a meaningful, positive way.

Posted by eh on November 11, 2009 at 10:26 a.m. #25

these guys never know what theyre talking about. i remember when someone asked if they would add new costumes as dlc and they said that wouldnt be possible because if only some people bought it, then how would it show in everyone's game when playing online....

Posted by @ scrubs on November 11, 2009 at 10:27 a.m. #26

What scene? The "Elitist Little Prick" scene? No thanks.

Posted by Focusflute on November 11, 2009 at 11:10 a.m. #27

GGPO or something better plz. I believe in you Capcom!!!!

Posted by bob on November 11, 2009 at 11:45 a.m. #28

Glad to hear that they fear our complaints and that they do their best !
Capcom isn't that dumb, their best interest is to deliver an improved netcode...OR ELSE !

Posted by yea on November 11, 2009 at 12:10 p.m. #29

in sf4 we got no modes at all,and the ones they did give us were absolute shiet. in this one they gave us many great modes, thank god!

Posted by btw on November 11, 2009 at 12:11 p.m. #30

also I forgot to mention the reason why this game is cheaper is because capcom probably feels really bad about shiping sf4 with shiet modes and shiet online so they gonna try to make it up to us, : )

Posted by Th3 JoK3R J on November 11, 2009 at 1:29 p.m. #31

The netcode will still be sh*t and you all will buy the game anyway.

Posted by chanz on November 11, 2009 at 3:07 p.m. #35

It is good to hear of efforts they are going to.
I am among my friends considered very computer technical so I can help visualise this for us all.
Imagine movie that has been spoken in one language but then made to be spoken into another language (In Example: Original Movie Language: Japanese - New Movie Language: English)
Sometimes when watching movie you will see mouth move but no words are coming out of the mouth.
This is what with lagging netcode this will be.
It is important to keep things synchronised, otherwise many mouths will be moving without words coming out.

Posted by vega rules all on November 11, 2009 at 3:11 p.m. #36

hope they say f you ppl complaining we arent doing squat now since you all complained-btw watch your mouth and stop complaining

Posted by classy on November 11, 2009 at 3:45 p.m. #37

i dont understand how can it be so hard, u have 64 player battles in fps, not spectators, all playing, and when u die u spectate a little with no problem

old fighting games like dead of alive had spectator and everything..

its obvous that capcom just sucks at online because all their other games suck online.. ill say it once and ill say it again japan doesn't do online gaming!
