JeuxVideo.fr interviews Ono about Super Street Fighter 4 The French site JeuxVideo.fr interviewed Super Street Fighter 4's producer, Yoshinori Ono about the upcoming game. Here's an overview of what was discussed.

• Ono wants an arcade version, but the market size is so small in most places (Japan was included in this statement) — it may not be feasible to release it that way. If an arcade release does happen, it will apparently take place after the console versions have hit.

• The development staff has heard numerous criticisms about how powerful the characters are, or aren't, and they're trying to rebalance things accordingly.

• While the properties for some special moves will be changing, the way they're executed (commands) will not be. Ono makes a point of stating that some EX moves were tweaked.

• Some characters will be receiving new special moves.

• Ultras will continue to be direct-damage attacks. You won't see a move like Yun's Genei-Jin as an Ultra or something along those lines because it doesn't fit with the 'Revenge Theme'.

• Ono doesn't state outright that there's a second Ultra per character, but he mentions that they're taking an in-depth look at the current Ultras and tweaking them according. He goes on to state that there will be a new small strategic element to Ultra moves.

• The Focus Attack system will not change, but the properties (frame data) will be tweaked for a few characters.

• After Capcom released Street Fighter 4, people were upset at the small amount of stages and that there weren't character-specific levels. This was due to the time constraints but Ono states the team is hard at work on this aspect for Super Street Fighter 4.

• Cross platform play is not something Capcom can do without the help of the console makers. He said if this is something the fans want, they need to contact Sony/Microsoft.

• Yoshinori said he was disappointed by the latest King of Fighters game, but if given the chance he would gladly work on a new Capcom vs. SNK title.

Cross platforming now that would be sweet!

Posted by FLASH PUNCH on November 5, 2009 at 3:25 p.m. #2

so they can add a bunch of characters but no new stages? i thought that would be much easier since you do not have to worry about balancing and all that....

Posted by Firegod on November 5, 2009 at 3:28 p.m. #3

yea cross platform would own. I still think at least xbox 360 to PC should work, but I guess its not as easy as i think it would be.

ps3 to xbox will be almost impossible. I highly doubt that sony and microsoft would allow it, but you never know it may happen.......

about as much chance as cvs3 happening.

Posted by adfvadf on November 5, 2009 at 3:46 p.m. #4

cvs3 would be awesome

Posted by Soul Bro Ryu on November 5, 2009 at 3:47 p.m. #5

Word to Ono for wanting to do Darkstalkers & CvS3. Any multi-millionaire fighting game junkies out there that want to produce these and bring back "Millionaire Fighting" for real.

'Bout time one of us here won the Powerball. It's about the only shot in Hell we have getting these follow-ups made...

Posted by Soul Bro Ryu on November 5, 2009 at 3:53 p.m. #6

BTW, cross-platforming would take a miracle, but if it was available, I'd gladly pay money for the freedom of fighting cats across the 360, PS3 and PC.

If people can burn $15 a month on WOW, $5 monthly would be more than reasonable or a flat fee for a year would be even better. Of course, this would have to involve cross-platforming other fighting games as well.

• While the properties for some special moves will be changing, the way they're executed (commands) will not be. Ono makes a point of stating that some EX moves were tweaked.

Does this mean that Deejay's Machine Gun Punch won't be a mash command? It feels kinda like he's disproving that rumor.

Posted by el Rey on November 5, 2009 at 4:05 p.m. #8

Cross platform play would be like a dream. You can't really be the best if you only play on one system. I want this s**t to happen and i want it on day one!

Posted by KJ on November 5, 2009 at 4:08 p.m. #9

Well that was a lame interview. They give us all this new info... then kind of shoot it down.

Posted by JustGetAPS3 on November 5, 2009 at 4:10 p.m. #10

But it would be nice to fight the lowly competition on Xbox.

Posted by Geese on November 5, 2009 at 4:13 p.m. #11

We where all disappointed because we wanted Garou 2 but they scrapped that but released an unfinished KoF game.

CvS3 would be awesome, hopefully with more Last Blade and Garou characters on the SNK side and more SFIII and non-SF characters on the Capcom side. These games have been KoF Vs. Street Fighter so far, and I think adding these new characters would be awesome. Also I need my Sean(SFIII) and Lucky Glauber(KoF) dream team to become a reality. Imagine the Capcom groove playing like SSFIV and the SNK side playing Garou with some elements of KoF11 & 12.

I don't know what to say about Ono's comment on the custom combo/genei-jin ultra thing. I mean...there's a screen of Juri with "TIME" over her ultra in place of the words "Ultra Combo" just like in SF3's custom combos. We'll see.

Posted by JustOwnBothSystems on November 5, 2009 at 4:19 p.m. #12

The same game all around. Blind System loyalty died with the 90's.

Posted by AJ on November 5, 2009 at 4:22 p.m. #13

I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't let us on the 360 play those on the PC. That doesn't make sense IMO.

Also, I took from that that Yun will be in but wont have everyone's favorite ultra. Oh well?

Glad they didn't take out the shortcuts for SRK, if only because jab jab SRK would be a pain with out it.

Posted by Madness on November 5, 2009 at 4:25 p.m. #14

Why worry about cross-console play when you can just hurry up and make a PC version...just about EVERYONE has a PC!!!

Posted by The Truth on November 5, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. #15

More Ono lies. Does anyone still believes him?

Posted by Cory on November 5, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. #16

Well I agree #14, but most people don't have good enough PC's, that and there are all those ignorant douches who say that PC's shouldnt even count for gaming, and say "games for PC are lame because they dont have controllers", not knowing that there are controllers for PC, and If they rally want to they can simply plug in a wired 360 controller. Those are also the same people who think that the only worthwhile video games in the world are Halo, and Madden.

rofl capcom vs snk 2... how would that be possible... kof is hd 2d sprite and sf is 3d or sthdremix 2d... they canot fit with each other... I know every frame were redrawn for cvs and svc but that would be a lot of work in snk style... And I don't want snk to make the cross over.... I'd rather see cvs2 for xbl and psn...

Posted by CervejaDoBrazil on November 5, 2009 at 4:41 p.m. #18

Go to teh super street fighter japanese page. already have new stuff up with voice audio of the characters as well as ChunLi and Cammy. plus a new page about the bonus stages and a new video about the new modes

Posted by amazingB on November 5, 2009 at 4:46 p.m. #19

I don't really care about cross play for casual online play... BUt when I bought a f1cking game on ps3 a te stick on ps3 and I know friend who have an xbox and I can't play with them.... DUH!!

Posted by kara on November 5, 2009 at 4:50 p.m. #20

so... where's the big announcement?

Posted by KJ on November 5, 2009 at 4:52 p.m. #21

@Cory

Way to be ignorant. Seriously.

How about everyone play the version of the game they want to play and don't whine about others? More importantly how about Capcom fix the NETCODE so we can actually play a game without going through 23462 'Can not play' games. Then finally getting in a game that lags like hell. That would be sweet. Shows how much I like this game since I still play it a lot.

I mean honestly.. can someone enlighten me how Blazblue pulls off perfect Online and why games like SF4, KoF12 and sh*t, even Gears2 can fail so badly? They obviously have ALOT more experience in this area than Arc System Works. lol

Posted by Catalyst on November 5, 2009 at 4:54 p.m. #22

@ScytheWP

I think Ono was talking about existing moves in SF4 and not characters like Dee Jay who weren't in the first title.

For example, if Dudley is in the game, his moves could be different than they were in SF3, but all fighters in SF4 moves will be the same commands.

Posted by ..... on November 5, 2009 at 4:55 p.m. #23

CVS3 would be awesome, but with as many characters added from CVS to CVS2, there would probably be even more. It would take a good 5 years or so to get licensing and all the characters in SF4 beauty. Id love seeing SNK'er redone this way though. Terry Bogard Triple Geiser as an ultra...or Rock Howard having his Neo Deadly rave as one (with command window) would look sweet. Rock Howard seems to be built to be a Shin Akuma killer somehow.

Im on xbox, I have ps3 aswell. Competition feels same to me, so why would you say that??

Posted by Madness on November 5, 2009 at 5:06 p.m. #25

@ cory

Upgrading your PC is probably a better idea than spending money on a console, those things are obsolete pretty quick these days, and both PS3 and Xbox controllers work with PC version

I can't believe capcom doesn't see the potential here, uniting the community for this game would be HUGE

it's better to just go by the comments made by the translation of when they were in paris and just stick to that information. This guy cuts that down in this summary a lot less than what we already know.

Posted by ¿? on November 5, 2009 at 5:26 p.m. #28

@2, @13
Your comprehension skills are seriously lacking.

@14
They just won't announce the PC version before the game's out on the consoles. The PC release steals purchases, first due to easier piracy, and second because it's cheaper (which probably means less profits, even after the console licensing and media costs are factored in). No point for them in stealing the thunder from the console releases, especially when some people will still buy the game twice.

Cross-platform support? It's definitely possible with the Xbox LIVE/Games for Windows LIVE platform, but Xbox LIVE/Playstation Network? Possible from a technical standpoint, but legally? Pretty much impractical.

Posted by anon on November 5, 2009 at 6:02 p.m. #35

What would CvS3 look like? I'd guess it would look like TvC, given that 3D games are around 2 billion times easier to make than hand-drawn ones. I'd hope that the SF4 graphics engine would be implemented, or one that's similar.
Also @AJ, no Ono did not confirm Yun just now. That was an example.

Posted by Ninjastar on November 5, 2009 at 6:07 p.m. #36

I'd like for them to tone down Ryu and fix the netcode.

It shouldn't take me 2 mins to search for a game only to be told "unable to play" or "this lobby is full" every damn time.

I would love to see street fighter character animated in king of fighters 12 style. That game looked fantastic and was honeslty the only good thing about the game.

Posted by Gertrude on November 5, 2009 at 8:06 p.m. #41

how come they arent going to change the commands on some of the moves like they did in HDR? The command for fei long's chicken wing is retarded. Just change to be a half circle motion or something. What is their reasoning for making it end in a diagonally upward position.

Posted by Chickenwings on November 5, 2009 at 8:21 p.m. #42

@gertrude

alot of things from hdr should have been in sf4. But for some reason capcom ignores any advancement that game has made. THings like giefs new commmand for the spd should have made it into 4.

Posted by shannaro!!! on November 5, 2009 at 8:31 p.m. #43

Looks like there's a lot going on for this game.

Posted by anon on November 5, 2009 at 8:42 p.m. #44

if they make CvS3, it will be orgasmic.

Posted by Firegod on November 5, 2009 at 9:12 p.m. #45

CVS3 with all the grooves of CVS2 (maybe more) and SF4 graphics would own. Add the online features of SSF4 with no lag and also Add all the characters from ssf4 and the new kof title and we got us a game we can play for 15 years.

Posted by Strider-RagnaroK on November 5, 2009 at 9:50 p.m. #46

CVSS3 would be awesome
cross platform play should be something standard on my opinion then everybody have more chance to get online play more easily without having to try 10 times to get a fight (off course this would never happen)

im loving all the news about SSFIV but really now we all want to know who are the additional characters

Posted by Street Credit on November 5, 2009 at 11:58 p.m. #48

i would really like the cross platform idea to manifest. how would we, the street fighter community, let sony and microsoft know that this is the only thing left to do for this great game. this would be the best thing ever for us as a whole.

but on the other hand, i doubt they will make a deal. why? just because of the fact that they are still trying to sell consoles.(price drops) it wouldn't completely stop sells, but it would delay them from happening. but who knows like someone said earlier, maybe a fee can cover this.

this idea has been out for other games but has never happened...when will this change?!?!?!?!?

Posted by RunningWild on November 6, 2009 at 1:50 a.m. #49

Even Ono knows KOFXII is crap. But at least he wants to do a new CvS... I'm all for it, I want to see Terry Bogard and Geese Howard is 3D that looks GOOD, unlike FFWA and the KOFMI games.

Plus you know they are totally gonna do a Kim vs. Juri special intro and have them be rivals. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v33...

Posted by chickenwings on November 6, 2009 at 2:40 a.m. #50

@runningwild

Dude screw the 3d. Do the sf characters kof12 style. kof12 looks like a work of art compared to sf4. Just picture it. Blanka would look like a monster again, bison wouldnt look like a scraped dbz villain, the females wouldnt look deformed and overall just retarded(seriously, look at them) i mean honestly only a few of the character models look solid, like sagat and zangeif but the rest of them just dont look good. Even though thats really an opinion i cant imagine anyone that wouldnt love to see sf character hand drawn as good as the kof12 characters.

Posted by Minphesto on November 6, 2009 at 5:13 a.m. #51

KOF12 was too pixelated...I like the 3d because it looks a lot more serious. Also, it is probably easier to create renders then to hand draw frames.

Posted by @chickenwings on November 6, 2009 at 5:17 a.m. #52

I'm really going to have to disagree. In my opinion, the models in SF4 all look spectacular. I have a couple of very minor gripes here and there but they're pretty excellent all around. Besides it takes a year and a half to do one KoF character in the XII style, and Versus games' casts are way too big to map out that many characters in any amount of reasonable time.

out of curiosity, why does everyone say there weren't enough stages in 4? i always thought there were kind of a lot. i just wish they had done direct remakes of some old school stages.

Posted by ben on November 6, 2009 at 6:45 a.m. #55

cross platforming? 360 g1 = ps3 g2, so no..

im glad he decided to add character specific stages, i really wasnt liking the majority of the stages in sf4, except for the airbase and the jungle...the music also was terribad

Posted by Danjitsu on November 6, 2009 at 7:14 a.m. #56

Wow the last 3 points are the biggest for me.

Hard at work on more stages = fully awesome.

Cross platform just being mentioned = totally awesome.

Possibility of a new Cap vs SNK game = me climbing the walls!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by HoP on November 6, 2009 at 8:07 a.m. #57

@ #54 regarding stages:

I don't think anyone is complaining that there weren't ENOUGH stages, everyone is complaining that the stages are generic and not character specific like they were in SFII.

Posted by Kabbila on November 6, 2009 at 8:35 a.m. #58

No info on pc release, no questions asked.

It's a conspiracy I tell you. The game media can't be that stupit to forget that crusial question 20 interviews in a row.

Posted by lol gaming on November 6, 2009 at 8:36 a.m. #59

If we were talking about nearly any other area, rival companies would be pushing for a standard for communication and interoperability. You'd be able to add friends from other networks.

But no, we're talking about console gaming. Microsoft would try to have the upper hand (by extending the protocol in a way that would effectively cripple the experience for others), Sony would go against it (only to, months later, come up with their own inferior solution, require royalties and then blame the lack of interoperability in other companies not willing to pay them for their proprietary, half-assed system). And Nintendo, being a games-only company, wouldn't even understand the concept of cooperating.

Posted by Madness on November 6, 2009 at 8:37 a.m. #60

If the PC version got pirated you need a genuine CD key to play it online, and without online the game is pretty much useless imo, so really that's no excuse not to release what many consider the best version of the game

Posted by WorstGiefEVER on November 6, 2009 at 8:51 a.m. #61

We need to get on Sony and Microsoft NOW before it is too late. We need to find out what we need to do, and bombard their office GLOBALLY for cross platform play.

"Ultras will continue to be direct-damage attacks. You won't see a move like Yun's Genei-Jin as an Ultra or something along those lines because it doesn't fit with the 'Revenge Theme'."

What constitutes a "revenge theme" ? Most of the the Ultra's are just added variations of the supers, so what's the big deal about not having classic supers make reappearances? Stupid Japs.

Posted by lol gaming on November 6, 2009 at 10:32 a.m. #65

@#62
The revenge theme is giving your best after being beaten up, dealing a single super-strong attack. A timed buff wouldn't fit that scheme.
But this is weird anyway, since evidence suggests Juri's first ultra is time-based.

@#64
You can. Just create an offline profile -- which, as far as saving goes, is exactly the same as having an online profile, because stupid Capcom saves everything locally anyway. Knowing about the file format, you can set yourself to however many battle points and challenge mode points you wish.

Honda, Ken, Guile, M. Bison, Ryu, Sagat, Vega, Zangief, Dee Jay, T. Hawk, new stages of Rose, Juri, Abel, Gouken, Seth, Sakura, Crimson Viper, Rufus, El Furete, grassy stage of Street Fighter Alpha 2, new stages for new characters.
