Sven revisits Street Fighter IV's netcode
Here's the post from the Unity Boards.
On the Japanese SF4 blog, they mention a possible update to Street Fighter IV. If this happens, will we see GGPO netcode like what's used in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix? Would it be possible to add it to the original game as well?
Sven: Trust me when I tell you, we really wanted fixed inputs/rewind style code like HDR/GGPO have too and was the subject of many discussions over the course of the SFIV development cycle.
Unfortunately, that's not likely to be something that can be retroactively fixed at this point.

They are more or less acknowledging the fact the the net code in SF IV is not on par with what they used in SF HDR. That is sad...

1. Mash jab!
2. If your opponent lands you in a combo, mash out your reversal move! Input lag will guarantee you to interrupt his/her combo with your own move!
3. ???
4. Profit ! !

I guess thats the price you pay when you play online. I don't let it hamper me though. I still find it fun.

I hate this kind of things. Buying a game I hope it to be working as it should. Always paying so much money not knowing anything about the actual performance and quality. But the media does it all wrong. Why hyping Gears 2 and CoD4 when it does not work properly online. And the Multiplayer is the most important part about these games. On the other hand Socom:C had some issues and they completely screwed up its reviews. Everyone who plays it now has no problems at all. You have no bad pings, no lags, no disconnects and no lobby kicks alike CoD4. Still this game gets hyped so much I find it sad. I have to admit, I need to love a game first to become hating it. Because after discovering problems and being annoyed by flaws all over again makes it just the game it should not be. Worst thing in Street Fighter is by far the connectivity. I need hours to get into matches which only take 2 minutes. People still disconnect and are not punished properly. The DC-rate displayed is wrong. I never disconnected though it shows me 1-2 % every now and then. And my router is perfectly set up for online play. It annoys me I cannot ping everyone in the search window. So I test the games by trying to join. If the join works I can see the ping in the lobby and decide if I stay or leave. Makes the whole thing even more complicated but not being able to find opponents with pings displayed forces me to gamble and so I lose even more precious time. Spending more time on searching for matches and opponents than on actual playing makes this game not worth the ratings it received.
Now everybody is hyping Modern Warfare 2 already and I am already annoyed by the fact I'd probably buy it not knowing it won't work again online. Crappy matchmaking system as in CoD4 and a bad support by Infinity Ward. They just want the money and after selling enough it is all calm around them. Until the next map pack must be promoted. And the same cycle repeats. Advertising --> Ripping off naive customers --> Not giving a f...
Sometimes I think they forget where their money comes from.

They should rename this game to "Killer Instinct"; every time someone breaks your laggy hit strings by mashing buttons, the announcer should say "Ka-kakakak-kombo breakerrrrr!!!!"

I have very few problems online. Less than 1/15 games have even a hint of lag.
@Romzen
Create your own rooms. It takes like 10 seconds for someone to join.

@stubbs
I sometimes wait years. Like I would not even show up in the search list of others.
Let us sum up all the issues of the online mode:
1. Lag due to low bandwidth of others because it's a P2P connection.
2. Bad search lists where the data sometimes does not refresh correctly and the pings are not even shown.
3. Disconnecting is not punished correctly. Quitted people's dc rate gets up.
4. Point loss (gp and cp) during championship mode without reasons. Also the tournament progress is reset.
5. Problems with watching and uploading replays.
6. Sometimes the issue occurs you cannot find opponents at all when starting the game. After rebooting the system it works fine again.
7. Disconnections due to P2P instability.
And Capcom is not willing to do anything? How can they honestly be serious with selling such a product. And people should not argue with the free C-mode. It should have been in the game from the beginning or a variation. Also look at older times and PC gaming. Patches with a lot of content are always delivered for free. You have modifications for each game. You can even create stuff yourself. Look at Blizzard and what they do with Diablo II. They still support the game and the community with patches and improvements. All for free. The Join System and Matchmaking is perfect. There are barely if any issues. Sometimes lags come up when the bandwidth of the host is not catching up but overall it is solid. And on our consoles with Capcom... well, we have to pay for additional costumes which already have been on the disk. Poor performance if you ask me.

As soon as Internet connectivity and hard drives became standard on consoles, PC-style broken games were inevitably gonna follow. Get used to em.

This'll be changed when SF4 Dash hits stores

I very much agree to everything "Romzen" wrote! I often have to sit and wait for 5 min after creating a lobby before anybody joins :O and when I try to connect to others I always get the messages "unable to connect" or "game already full" and when I search again the search engine find me the same players which I was unable to connect to! :S
This is crazy, either I have to create a lobby of my own and wait for 5 min (not kidding ya) or click on at least 20 players when searching for other lobbies!! I would estimate my efficient gameplay time to around 5-10 % of time when I'm online :( and when I finally connect to another player it almost always lags!
This is bad capcom, really bad!! And it's not my internet connection that's the problem, I have 100/100 mb cable...

Just who complain about finding opponents: Just go to arcade mode and set your preferences to Player/Rank/CE and fight against the CPU while the game searches in the background for players. It creates a room for you in the background that people and join, and it tries to join in other people's rooms, so the searches go twice as fast.

wow i never wait so much on a lobby nor get that kind of problems, i think your ISP is the problem
Posted by Romzen on May 26, 2009 at 7:54 a.m. #22
@ravenous
my router is perfectly set up for online play. my bandwidth is 16mbit/s. i have issues and capcom did admit there are problems and apologized though still did not announce a fix.

its all bull s**t,
Capcom know how to get money from their fanbase. I would bet money that the next version of SF will have what the hardcore fans wanted the first time round.
`GGPO
`Street Fighter 3 characters
`Online lobbies
And were not going to see them without playing for another game.

SF4 online is really a fiasco on Capcom's part. I got my fingers crossed for better online in KOFXII and BB, but I'm not holding my breath

I'm glad they (sidehandedly) admitted that HDR's netcode is far superior.
Posted by ove on May 26, 2009 at 9:48 a.m. #26
@ duh
I've tried "fight request" aswell and yes it does work better/faster than just waiting in a lobby, but not fast enough! When I have the "fight request" setting turned on I usually get one online opponent per arcade-session (beating all the cpu fighters including seth), so I'm pretty fed up with arcade mode by now.. I usually create a lobby and cook or clean while waiting for an opponent instead! :P

People still play this game?
Posted by OGHowie on May 26, 2009 at 11:14 a.m. #28
I don't have problems with SF4 online. I only play with people 3 bars and above.
They really need to implement lobbies though. Maybe they can't do it because their netcode is too crap?
