Capcom-Unity members making push for GGPO in next SF
Over on Capcom-Unity.com, a bunch of people are making a case for Capcom to use GGPO Internet code in the next version of Street Fighter, which is rumored to be Street Fighter IV Dash (Championship Edition).
Attempting to get GGPO technology in Street Fighter 4 is not a new issue, as it was believed Capcom U.S.A. pushed very hard to get the code in there, but for reasons currently unknown, it wasn't included with the game.
It was speculated though that the GGPO net code was too much for the current gaming consoles to handle in tandem with Street Fighter IV's graphics engine.
But it's looks like the argument is being re-ignited and Capcom V.P., Christian Svensson, said that he would show the feedback the community is offering to the team. So if this is important to you, make sure you hop on this thread and add your voice to the argument.
For those of you who aren't familiar with GGPO, it's the net code behind Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, and many online fighting game players have given it very high praise as the best way to play online.

When I purchased HD Remix I was instantly impressed by the quality of the network connection. They should do a Proof-of-Concept test for GGPO. If it works, use it. If it doesn't work, search for other solutions. But at least try it.

HD Remix is not GGPO at its fullest.
Ponder adjusted the already working netcode present in HDR to bring it on par with GGPO.
However GGPO is slightly better than HDR (yes, you heard right!).

also please support that capcom-unity thread.. we have a great opportunity to make them listen

^ GGPO is not slightly better than HDR. It is extremely better.

Give me the same online experience in BlazBlue and I'll be fine and consider a buy.

experience in = experience as in ...

If GGPO was so damn good, why do I still here complaints non-stop about HDR online. Is it something other than lag? Darksydephil says that the lag is horrible in HD Remix.

@Albert Wesker
Could be the connection is bad for both players. It works like a charm though. Hop on to GGPO if you haven't tried it.

GGPO is not the same as HDR!
ask Alex Valle, Graham Wolfe, JCole or afrolegends how good GGPO is.. they are GGPO regulars

@8
There's still lag in HDR, but no input dropping (I don't think,) so no delayed inputs!

I think the SF4 Online Code is very good, it needs no changes :)

I'm not a fan of GGPO. I heard of how good it is, so I hopped on a little while back to play some 3rd Strike. It skips frames to take away lag, and I just can't deal with that. Frames are crucial in a game as technical as Street Fighter.

GGPO or not, I'm not going to encourage Capcom to drive SF back into the ground with a million dinky sequels by paying $60 for a game with 5% new content.

HDR plays like utter crap. GGPO plays much better. As far as I'm concerned HDR is all but unplayable online, at least on PSN- I can't speak for the 360. I know I will get a lot of hate from this but personally I think soul calibar 4 has the best netcode of the current online fighters. It always always always finds lots of matches very quickly and they are normally 4 or 5 connections which play damn near perfectly. The same can not be said of HDR or SF4 for that matter.
I hope they figure something out for the next version of SF4. It is currently really frustrating to play and lose to srk spam happy kens and lariat spamming geifs because the lag is such that hit confirm combos with the link timing is so different that you always eat one of those two things when attempting them online.
Posted by asdasdasdas on July 24, 2009 at 7:54 a.m. #16
I guarantee you if you just said SF4 had GGPO, 99% of the people complaining on the lag, would think it's suddenly better.
The people who aren't doing 3-4 hit links really aren't getting screwed up by any delays, and that's a majority of the people playing SF4.

I know Capcom could have made extra chars as DLC, being that they already have your money there gonna try to make a new game. However if SF IV didn't do so good we would have had Capcom try harder to bring in more fans by adding chars as DLC, The jump to 3D is nice looking but sacrifices all the cool chars is a shame Capcom holds back to try to make a whole new game (since SF IV did so well) already , hope they bring air block back and make the game even faster , if not i will boycott too.

Anything has to be better than the netcode we're using now. And if GGPO is as good as everyone says it is, then I'll vote for it right now!

i heard marvel's goin GGPO?
Posted by blahblah on July 24, 2009 at 8:50 a.m. #20
hdr is using basically the same netcode as ggpo, some of you have no clue what your talkin about.
Posted by bobbylove on July 24, 2009 at 8:54 a.m. #21
i cant tell the difference in lagtime between hdr netcode and ggpo netcode ..at least on xbox360 live anyway
Posted by mrkman55 on July 24, 2009 at 10:02 a.m. #22
the online play for SFIV isn't that great. Just a few matches here and there for me that are laggy.
My biggest suggestion is to change the format of the online play. Like have actual individual tournaments with static people throughout and not just random fights and each win is considered move on up, because that format really doesn't feel competitive.
Posted by Truth on July 24, 2009 at 10:16 a.m. #23
ANY netcode is still < Local matches. Fighting games are too precise for any lag. Arcades will always be the best place to get better, or Gathering with consoles. It just hurts you playing online where certain characters like Zangief and Ken are alot better because of lag.
Posted by Nyoronoru on July 24, 2009 at 10:58 a.m. #24
It just hurts because characters that require precision gameplay (C. Viper, Rufus, Bison) are totally crippled by any lag.
Posted by Netcode truth on July 24, 2009 at 12:20 p.m. #25
Blazblue netcode is wonderful, it uses GGPO and Ponder himself made it even better there. So GGPO is the way to go. HDR code is not exactly GGPO, it's similar but a little bit worse, but still pretty good.

I'm cool with net codes, but my main issue is... DLC PLEASE! In this economy, I don't think I can cough up another 60 bucks for something that about 20% different.
Posted by Ballatician on July 24, 2009 at 1:06 p.m. #28
I can't believe no one has made a big deal about the Spectating feature that GGPO offers. That was one of the coolest things about the software.
Aside from just the net code itself, spectating should be an option... or a Line mode capability versus mode where the winner will keep playing until he loses and everyone else waits their turn.

i dont even play SF4 because of the online being crappy.... and no one wants to meet up and play like on a fairly regular basis. SF4 is completely dead for me. i dont want it to be, but it really is .

Anytime i log in ggpo
I get disconnected
Won'T even work for me

ggpo doesnt work for me either =(

The online for SF4 was fantastic on that first week it came out even at 1-2 bars. But the overflow of everybody just makes it horrible.
Posted by Bobo on July 24, 2009 at 5:22 p.m. #33
I play 3s on GGPO, BlazBlue uses the GGPO netcode. I don't see why SF4 doesn't support it.
Posted by Um on July 24, 2009 at 9:59 p.m. #34
Release ggpo for this current sf4 as dlc thanks!
Posted by sakurafice on July 24, 2009 at 10:54 p.m. #35
@yflow
are you serious?
it skips animation frames, not input frames
in 3s you could be precise as hell with NO input lag
you can pull off links in sf3 (which are way hard)much easier than lag in sf4 (in which links are way easy in comparison)
seriously, you have to play 3s seriously to know if it's screwing up your game, not looking at "numbers"
ggpo netcode is better...fullstop/period
Posted by classy on July 24, 2009 at 11:26 p.m. #36
how about they just put in a frakin lobby or match making that actually works...
without the stupid ass "unable to play crap" every game company knows how to do online except frakin capcom..they suck ass at it.. i have to resort to playing arcade mode and wait for people..
you here that ono? in america we play online not arcades so fix it already
Posted by deepshock on July 25, 2009 at 4:28 a.m. #37
GGPO would be pretty good indeed. In addition, have it so that the check to see if a game is "already full" or "unable to play" is made before it's given the opportunity to show up. It would be well worth a few seconds more search time to get this done.
Posted by phillai on July 25, 2009 at 5:46 a.m. #38
HD Remix plays pretty well online...
Shame about the actual connection prior to actually getting a game!!!
There's been times when I just simply can't get a game for upto 10 minutes of trying!
Posted by Digital- on July 25, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. #39
I like GGPO's 3rd Strike better then SF IV for PC cause its way easier to do inputs since there is like no input lag with GGPO.
But for some reason SF 4 for PC handles network lag better for my computer. I can play like 100 games straight on SF IV PC and my computer wont feel like its lagging, but on GGPO I usually need to restart GGPO after like 10 matches straight. Could be adobe AIR or some other chat room related lag, but to me GGPO isn't as polished as SF IV. Its just that SF IV has bad input lag.

I just want an autofilter so guys with 3 bars or less can't join my games.
Posted by Fall8 on July 25, 2009 at 7:08 p.m. #41
It's pretty funny how a non-Capcom game is using GGPO before a Capcom game is.
Posted by What? on July 26, 2009 at 12:57 p.m. #42
its just a netcode why would it have a problem running sf4? and i believe ponder already commented on that hi

i sure hope they don't utilize ggpo since it has tons of bugs and the flashbacks/rollbacks suck badly
Posted by Dustin Fong on July 26, 2009 at 11:16 p.m. #45
@40: not being able to filter people who join your room is probably the worst non-feature in the game.

anythhig is good wen it comes to online play for sf4.sf4 timing on some moves and frame data is strict so whats the poiont of havin all that if u cant use it in matches..very annoying wen u get matches specially 1,s that r higher grade then u.wen none of ur inputs come out.u have to adjust ur moves to use mk and lk mp.most of ur combos whiff and it looks like u dont know what ur doing.no wonder u c so many ryus ken and sagats.cos characters like c.viper are near impossible to play online.sort it out capcom.
fei long user used to use gouken.

show more players with good connections and let european players play japan and states witout any lag or input delay im sure there is a way.if ggpo works do it if not try something else im sure as big as capcom and sf is they wont have a problem sorting it out.
im really a bit tipsy from entering to many lag bars. i have a good broad band connection and playing mates just down the road sometimes still input delays both having 4 bars showing.so what is it.please sort it out. and also 2 costumes for characters mirror matches r confusing unless 1 has dlc.suggestion;u have to play 100 online matches to unlock alt costumes and a gold title or a symbol like a scare or a wrist band or head band on the character.u have to do it for each of them that way u wont c so many ryus and ken and sagats.50 will unlock a silver title.anyone who is a member in forums like srk ,capcom unity please if u like my idea put it in the forum to c what people think about.thank you.

ggpo is great.but from the play i have been getting recently.i would say that 90% are happy with the way it is.because when there are losing.i suddenly notice input delay or frames flickering.then i lose again.is it my connection or is there something wrong with psn.
i would be very happy what ever capcom did.just give us guys who play decent games with really good connection bars not recive someones crap connection that tehy do them self to interfer with my games.
