Street Fighter 4 one of the most pirated titles in 2009

Street Fighter 4 one of the most pirated titles in 2009

According to this story on TorrentFreak.com, Street Fighter 4 was one of the most pirated games on the PC and XBox 360 in 2009.

You can see from the chart below that the 360 version was the 2nd most pirated title of the year on that system with 840,000 downloads and the PC version 5th overall for that platform with a whopping 1,850,000 downloads.

Capcom tried many tactics with the PC release of the game to keep it from being easily pirated, using things like SecuROM, but the hacker groups still found a way.

It's hard to say how much piracy hurts sales, but it's certainly a bad thing for any software business and some people would argue if those downloads were sales instead, it's quite reasonable that the PC release of Super Street Fighter 4 would be guaranteed instead of being up in the air.

I admit, I pirated it. It's my practice dojo if you will. I own it on PS3 and 360, why buy it a 3rd time? Plus, I really dig the custom costumes as well. I'm packed with them.

That's a lot of scumbags who are to hypocritical, naive and cheap to actually pay for a game and it enjoy it for what it's worth. Economy my a$$. We only have our selves to blame.

It'll be the pirates fault when we don't get a PC version of SSF4.

i also downloaded it, i admit, but i bought it legitly for my ps3, which is my primary playing platform. i use the downloaded pc version to practice as well.

Is it bad to pirate if you only want to train with modded characters? I blame Capcom for not including Mike Haggar in any Street Fighter Games, there's such a wonderfully rendered mod of him out there, I feel compelled to use it while practicing combos.

And I'm not going to buy a duplicate copy for PC if I'm going to mess it up using mods.

That is really sad. I pay for games I like on my PC. Because it is on computer format doesn't mean it is free.

Ya just like the movie busness, they complain and complain that pirates are ruining it. However I am willing to beat that about half atleast of the people who pirate stuff just wouldn't see or play the games they pirate if they had to play.

Solution is simple.

Release Super Street Fighter 4 on Taito TypeX 2 and PS3 only.

I use the PC version to practice.

I also payed for it.

Proves what a complete and utter waste of time and money DRM / Securom is.

When will they learn.

I pirated it. But, I had also preordered it and was waiting on it to be delivered. So I'm a tally in both categories.

Posted by Name:Name:Name: on December 29, 2009 at 1:15 a.m. #22

I bought it on 360, then pirated it on pc as it was on bittorrent a week before it was released on steam. When it came out on steam I paid for it.

Friend of mine has it on 360 and uses pirated pc version for practice.

Really the whole point of games like this is the multiplayer which you don't get with the pirated pc version, I doubt many of the pc pirated versions are from people who either haven't already paid for sf4, or wouldn't of paid for it anyway.

Posted by Cake eater on December 29, 2009 at 1:17 a.m. #23

1. This is why Capcom should support the PS3 more, they have paying customers.
2. Just because there was nearly a mil downloaded, doesn't mean they would have lost a mil in sales, since some pirates only download them because its free, not because they wanted to play it.

Posted by steve on December 29, 2009 at 1:25 a.m. #24

"It'll be the pirates fault when we don't get a PC version of SSF4."

And it was Capcoms fault that it was pirated so much on the PC.

Don't want it to be pirated? Instead of wasting your time with already broken DRM (Hint: All DRM is already broken, if not, give it two weeks and it will be). Instead, release the game at the same time as other platforms.

I and more than a few of my friends own SF4 on one of the consoles but downloaded the PC version. If it was out at the same time as the 360 version, not only would we have bought it but I know someone that wouldn't even own a 360 right now.

If you don't treat PC gamers like first class gamers, don't expect them to act like them.

"treat pc gamers like first class gamers...." tbh it looks like its the other way around treat capcom as a first class software developer or dont get the games they make on your format.

You can all try and justify it by saying its for training only but the training is part of the game.

Modern Warfare became the most stolen game this year and it's been out barely a month now.

Posted by Greedy McNasty on December 29, 2009 at 1:59 a.m. #31

Yep it is the way of the world now. Your going to get it stolen no matter what you do. It still sold 4 million copies. I say don't make a PC version till way late in the games life span. Man talk about a reason to make it an PS3 exclusive.

Microsoft does the dirty finger twice! I guess I will pay for someone's stolen copy. Not like Microsoft can stop xbox 360 owners that mod there systems and steal games.

Posted by hahahah on December 29, 2009 at 2:07 a.m. #32

Yeah yeah steve, don't even bother trying to make a point about PC gamers deserving better. I am a PC gamer, and I can safely admit we are f'ing 8th class customers. We deserve whatever BS we get for the amount of stuff we steal, and for the piss poor excuses we make to justify it. God knows how much I steal.

You can say what you say, but if PC is released at the same time as consoles, maybe some people who would've ponied up for the console release instead just pirate it for PC, denying sales. There's no winning, really. Thanks to all this, they're probably eventually going to make games entirely serverside operations where you stream them online. Maybe that will be the end of piracy. Probably not though.

On a more practical note, let's be real... aside from the rampant piracy, the PC community isn't exactly known for its love of fighting games. I was surprised as hell to see SF4 getting so high on the piracy charts for PC.

Posted by fight on December 29, 2009 at 2:10 a.m. #33

It would be interetsing to see how many people who pirated a pc or xbox already had a bought copy of the game(like moder warfare 2).That being said also how many people who pirated the game would have bought a copy to begin with(like sim3 honestly who would buy that?).

Posted by casey on December 29, 2009 at 2:14 a.m. #34

sad really cause a lot of business are "up in the air" due to piracy and hacked downloads... all of you guys whom downloaded the game should realize they do this for a living, and it take a lot of time and yes, money to make. they don't make the huge profits we think they make due to taxes, format fees, marketing, and such... if we want to support something, we should pay for it. yeah, I'm not an angel either cause I've done some downloading of music for free before, but I prefer being honest and paying for the things that was meant to make the people that made it money. if you were in their shoes, you would've done the same.

Posted by asdf on December 29, 2009 at 2:22 a.m. #35

"some people would argue if those downloads were sales instead, it's quite reasonable that the PC release of Super Street Fighter 4 would be guaranteed "

makes no sense whatsoever. not everyone who downloaded it would have bought it, obviously. don't even try to blame the lack of a PC release on SSF4 on piracy. this is just a bitter post that is looking for a scapegoat.

Posted by no comprende on December 29, 2009 at 2:28 a.m. #36

The solution is simple.

Stay away from hacked, compromised platforms like the 360.

Support PS3 to ensure the industry survives and better games are made in true 1080p. =]

Anything else are you part of the problem.

Posted by PC player on December 29, 2009 at 2:31 a.m. #37

I downloaded the PC version to play until it was not in the stores here in Brazil. Then I bought the original to play online.

Another thing is that the xbox players usually don't download the game, they buy it at shops that sell the pirate game. If everyone that plays a pirate version downloaded it, I'm sure this number would be higher.

I don't know about the xbox 360 version, but in the pirated PC version you were unable to play online, thus rendering it completely useless to most. This is why they need to further enhance the online experience for SSFIV. The online community is something you can't possibly duplicate. Make it so good that nobody in their right mind would even consider being limited to single-player or locally restricted games (with often inferior players), which is what the pirated version would offer.

Sure, most of the people that pirate games/movies probably wouldn't have payed for it otherwise, but it's not like the original creators and companies can simply ignore the pirates and pretend that they aren't acquiring their work for free either.

#44 how to play sf4 pirated game online?use any other game's Games for windows live code it wokrs!or buy the cheapest game with a GFWL code (u can find those for 5$)So capcom dont blame pirates, blame those who created that stupid GFWL system (hi Microsoft ;) )

Posted by cool story bro on December 29, 2009 at 3:32 a.m. #51

I bought it for PS3 at $60. Pirated it on PC for practice when the TV was being hogged by others. Paid $40 for it so I could play online when I travel and bought a second copy for my brother as a gift when it was $20.

That being said people like me are still in the minority. Until the industry (music/movies/gaming) find a way to ensure pirates get prosecuted people will keep stealing their stuff online.

Posted by Lalala on December 29, 2009 at 3:40 a.m. #52

Capcom's own fault. Binding with GFWL was the biggest mistake of their life if they were looking to make this game pirate free more or less. The formula would've worked well if there were no SecureROM(which is useless against those who are pirating this game, and pain in the ass for those who are actually buying it) and if GFWL binded one game to one cd-key for online play.

Posted by Elk on December 29, 2009 at 3:42 a.m. #53

I bought this game for the 360, and while I believe the idea of copyright is retarded, I also believe in supporting really quality games by buying them. If I was going to play SF4 on PC I'd buy it. If I was just going to use it for practice either or, but I don't think my laptop is good enough in the graphics card dept.

But yeah, the idea that "If every download was a bought copy" argument is stupid. There are a lot of people who wouldn't buy it regardless, and a lot of people who pirate then buy. I downloaded both Protomen albums, then once I had some disposable money, bought both.

Guys, Playstation 2 wouldnt be so popular if not the damn piracy, and x360 wouldnt be popular at all if not the possibility to download games for free.
And some "pirates" actually buying games after they played it for free, if the game deserves it.

Posted by I bought it on December 29, 2009 at 5:47 a.m. #61

I bought it (PC) because of the online play. I think this strategy is the best one. If you don´t have the original game, you cannot play online. It is almost impossible to make an "unhackble" game...

Several of my friends that usually don´t buy games, did buy SF4 on PC to play online. I really think Capcom didn´t lose too much money because of that.

Posted by prorook on December 29, 2009 at 6 a.m. #62

I'm sure that many of those downloads are also people that paid for the game. Theres no way to play online without buying the game, and who the hell plays without online capabilities? Also, a lot of the downloads are not "would be buyers", but people who have no intention of buying the game in the first place. I mean, I'm sure they lost some sales but you can just go "OMG PIRATES MADE CAPCOM LOSE 20 MILLION DOLLARS!!1!".
One major flaw with the PC version, though, is that you could pay for ANY "GFWL" game and use that key for sf4.
Eg.Buy shadowrun off ebay for $2, tadaaa, you just bought sf4 for $2.

WTF, so you cant "practise" on the consoles?

Im happy that the poor bastar*ds are pirating the pc version.
Now capcom doesnt have to waste time and money on those sad cun*ts.

Conclusive proof that pirates are f***tards.

Posted by Screw PC Gamers on December 29, 2009 at 6:07 a.m. #66

Pirates are digging themselves a grave. The more times they pirate, the more companies will simply abandon the PC. That's why Modern Warfare 2 (Call of Duty) which BEGAN its business in the PC, chose to give the people who started it all a big ass middle finger by giving them a crappy port. And good for Infinity Ward! I'm glad they didn't spend as much money on the damned waste of consumers that are PC Game Piraters. PS3 and Xbox 360 are more than enough sales for them. Capcom shouldn't have given any PC gamers the benefit of the doubt, they're a blight on the whole gaming business and should be treated as such. If Capcom's any smart, they will never start any discussion on PC releases of Super Street Fighter 4.

Posted by wahwahwah on December 29, 2009 at 6:15 a.m. #69

i'm so sick of people quoting piracy figures as if they mean something.
as many people have pointed out, piracy numbers don't equal lost sales numbers, it merely means there was a hell of a lot of people interested enough to waste their bandwidth on downloading the game.
the fact that you can't see how many people went on to buy the game,= or how many people continued playing it after a week of going "oh man, i remember playing sf2 when i was little!" means that the data is only useful for demonstrating that a large portion of people wanted to see what it was like.

Posted by Jan on December 29, 2009 at 6:21 a.m. #70

I don't see what's the big deal about pirating the game on X360 and PC...you can't play online on PC and if you play the pirated game on LIVE..your console is probably banned by now.... playing the game with AI is dumb and no fun at all...

Only benefit is maybe you can play locally with friends..

I think it is good way for people to test the game out...if people like the game enough they'll just buy it

Posted by Prower on December 29, 2009 at 6:27 a.m. #71

One of the reason that the PC piracy numbers are high, is because the Pirated Version of SF4 was releasd before the oficial one. (Like 1-2 weeks before).

Making a lot of ppl download to play before buying the game.

Posted by JAck on December 29, 2009 at 6:29 a.m. #72

Yeah I see it more like a demo thing when you download a game and try it out. :P
That's what I did. Then I realized that this game might be hella fun in multiplayer so I bought it. And it was a great buy if you ask me. I'm loving this game.

I didn't know you could use ANY gfwl key to play sfiv online, I guess its a mistake on their part? If they ever release SSFIV for PC I wish they'd use a real-time chat system instead of that "snail e-mail" of GFWL.

Posted by @70 on December 29, 2009 at 6:31 a.m. #73

Yes, and bandwidth is a form of currency. The data demonstrates how many people pirated it, stop trying to doll the concept up by saying they're just people who wanted to see what it was like. They pirated it, simple. And yeah, I know you're trying to say we have no idea on the amount of people who bought the game after they pirated it, but there's no way of telling how many people DIDN'T buy it either. So you don't have a point as much as you claim we don't The point is, they pirated it. Why don't you take a look at the comments here, put up a sort of table and count up the people who say 'i pirated it' vs. 'i pirated it, but i bought it when Steam released it'. The ratio is as good a representation as any. -_-

Posted by grog on December 29, 2009 at 6:35 a.m. #74

I've been into pirating since the 90's. If something deserves to be bought, I'll buy it. I've purchased SFIV on PS3 and 360 because I like supporting Capcom. But Applications, like from @dobe who put out the same shyte with a few new features and charge 900$ for the pack can go F themselves.

the pc version pirates im sure have already purchased a copy of SF4 and probably pirated for modding reasons. Probably wouldn't effect sells much. People buy it or they dont

As for no SSF4 on arcade its definately most likely Japans fault for not getting it.

Then why is Super Street Fighter 4 guaranteed on X360 with the same piracy problem?

Posted by tipiak on December 29, 2009 at 8:27 a.m. #87

I dont think piracy really hurts the SF4 sales since to play online with the ranking system you have to pay for the game.
A dlded game cannot (or it is extremly risky) be played on xbox live and on PC you need a key.
I assume that the ppl who downloaded the game wanted just to try it and/or play like one hour then get over it.
Real fans buy the game.

Posted by @89, on December 29, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. #88

On the X360 version, no you don't.

With the PS3 to play online ranking, of course you need a retail disc.

And yes, real fans do buy the game. :)

And with the arcade hardware hacker-proof, why no SSF4 there?

Hmm, something doesn't add up.

Agree with Tipiak. Most places don't rent PC games. Why pay X$ Amount to find out you don't like it then trade it in to a gaming store and lose 10-20$ off it right away for trade value. I guess you can argue that that's what review sites are for. But some places like IGN do a review on one platform then use that same video for the others. And don't touch on problems, concerns etc for that specific platform, which I think is bull.

That's a lot of flowchart Ken playing booty pirates.

Posted by ok, but.. on December 29, 2009 at 8:56 a.m. #92

this doesn't mean much for PC
1. those with an illegal copy can't play online or already bought the game on other systems (which is fair imho)
2. many downloaded and installed the pirated copy with a legit key to get rid of Steam (which needs to be open when playing online) or other silly protections

however.. xbox360 pirates can play online if they have Live and that's is just plain wrong

Posted by Suosz on December 29, 2009 at 9 a.m. #93

I downloaded the PC SF4 because I couldn't wait to play, then I waited a month so the game would be released in my country and I bought it. I don't think I'm the only one that did this. Those numbers don't tell the whole story.

Posted by lol on December 29, 2009 at 9:09 a.m. #94

I wonder when people will stop portraying those pirate download numbers as a loss in sales. If 2 million people download it from the internet, it's fairly safe to assume that all of them wouldn't buy the game in the first place, they would either get it borrowed from a friend, rent it for a console or simply spend their time doing something else.

Despite having that many pirate downloads, SF4 sold well over 2 million legit copies. Not releasing a version of SSF4 for the PC when you're looking at that kind of figure would be a mistake.

Right?

What's the point of pirating a game that is heralded by online competition while being unable to use it?

Posted by Supporter on December 29, 2009 at 9:33 a.m. #96

I downloaded both the 360 and PC versions, but I also bought them. In fact I bought the 360 version twice because my first disc broke.

I paid for my SFIV. If I can afford to pay for a new game, then I do. If I can't, then I really have more important things to worry about than getting the hot games on the market.

I've seen different charts saying PS3 and others saying x360. SF4 aside multiplats move way more units on the x360 due to the larger install base. Developers would be stupid to ignore that.

Posted by Deeznuts on December 29, 2009 at 9:55 a.m. #101

DAMN!!! That's a lot of downloads!
I payed for my collectors edition! If you love and enjoy the game, then you should buy the game and support the company!

Posted by black beard on December 29, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. #102

the 360 is superior

half the gamees on ps3 arent even 1080p
half of them are still ports from the 360 version because developers are still having trouble programing for it.

then most of the exclusives for ps3 suxors..
except for a handful drakes etc..

the rest are on both consoles with sell more on the 360
yes the ps3 is stronger but as of right now its nt in use...

ps2 was better than xbox but xbox was a stronger system...

if u buy a gaming system for a blue ray player is one thing but doesnt give them GAMING a upper hand...just multi tasking...and a bad decision on microsoft.

the 360 online base blows psn out the usa...

then ive seen many updates for ps3 that messes up th eblueray player no one ever speaks on it but its common i work at gamestop and i see it all the time

"if those downloads were sales instead, it's quite reasonable that the PC release of Super Street Fighter 4 would be guaranteed instead of being up in the air."

If it sold more than either of the console versions, SSF4 PC would be a guarantee? Really?! I'm stunned by your amazing insight, whoever you are.

Posted by lol on December 29, 2009 at 10:22 a.m. #104

People have to understand that software only exist while the machine is turned on! I wont waste my money on stuff that actually doesn't exists, it's just bytes! And worse, with a game i'll get bored in no time! It's even more reasonable pay a windows copy (nah...just kidding)...
When you download it on TPB, you aren't stealing, because the owner/producer/developer, whatever, still have his source code and you have only a mere copy...you don't took anything from anyone!
i'm a computer science graduate and a software developer...i know about this stuff...It's hard and expensive develop a game like that, but, sell bytes seems wrong to me.
The only thing they could charge about this game stuff is the service of using his servers IF you want to play on-line, like those well known MMORPGs...that's all...

I never buy bootleg crap--EVER. If I can't afford it, I wait until I can before even thinking of giving the bootleg man any of my money. I hate thieves and I don't support them in any way shape or form. These same guys would find a way to rationalize breaking into your place and ripping you off if they saw you had something that they wanted. "Well, he's got two flat screens and I can't afford one so it won't hurt him if we take his tvs. He's got renter's insurance."

LOSERS.

People who support thieves will get bit in the azz eventually. A thief will break into your car or crib and take your shyt and when it happens remember to go, " Oh, well."

Under the brave black flag I fly,
Than play a sanctimonious part,
With a pirate head and a pirate heart.
Away to the cheating world go you,
Where pirates all are well-to-do;
But I’ll be true to the song I sing,
And live and die a Pirate King!

When I sally forth to seek my prey
I help myself in a royal way.
I piss more whiners off it’s true,
Than a well-bred monarch ought to do;
But many a king on a first-class throne,
If he wants to call his crown his own,
Must manage somehow to get through
More dirty work than ever I do

Hurrah!

Posted by hmmmmm on December 29, 2009 at 10:48 a.m. #108

Well, I am not endorsing pirating, but this game HAS to be played ONLINE--- no actual point unless you have loads of people in your area coming to your house to play it o_o.. Anyway its not like the pirates are going online and clogging the servers for people who actually paid for it. I just couldn't wait for the PC release and downloaded it illegally.. after a few days I bought it because I just wanted to play online.
--- XBOX has same piracy problems so why is SSF4 coming out for XBOX and not on PC (as of yet)??? So I don't think piracy is the cause for PC being 'up in the air'
--- PC did have good sales-- it was up in the Steam charts for quite some time-- above Fallout3 and Left for Dead.. And steam is not even the only place to buy the game.

Take a look at these:
"Christian Svensson, Capcom vice president, business development and strategic planning, called suggestions that the difference in release timing is due to piracy "completely absurd", and revealed that it's simply down to the game not being done."
"The testing on PC in particular is a very very time consuming process. Testing and optimisation versus obviously when we're working on console or an arcade board for that matter, it has a known configuration that we can optimise for out of the gate."

Here is what SVEN had to say on the Unity Boards when asked if he was satisfied with PC SF4 sales: So far, satisfied.
And that was in Jul 22 2009....

Maybe it just takes longer to optimize it for the PC , like he said. So we probably just have to wait for a bit longer than console users.

This is the same as when Epic tried to blame PIRACY for the low sales of Gears of War. In reality it was just a CRAPPY PORT which was playable only after 2 PATCHES--- That is unthinkable when FPS games are a stronghold of the PC console. And because of this, NO GoW2 for PC!!!!

So, evryone, JUST WAIT FOR IT, hard as that may be.
Next, we'll be blaming the pirates for Global Warming and Santa being fake!!!

Peace

Posted by As for Arcade on December 29, 2009 at 10:49 a.m. #109

I personally beleive that SSF4 wont be released on ARCADES because of Japanese gamers.

Sure it sold copies but Capcom will willingly jipp fans when they think they can get more profit out of non-arcade release.

And that's cause a lot of Japanese fans just went to the local arcade to play SF4 and i doubt that most of them even bought the game. Otherwise they should have some console character experience on those match ups correct?

You would spend years making a game getting the bugs out and some cheapA$$ says screw your hardwork i dont want to play for it i want it free!!! SCREW YOU PC'C IF IT IS GOOD PAY FOR IT! just release the PS3 version, so people can't pirate.
Otherwise, people will download the 360 or PC version for sure. not much for 360 version, but i guess that's why they are not releasing the PC version.

They release the PC version much later than the console version and then they announce super street fighter IV, what, two months later? If they expected to sell more by doing that... they are doing it wrong.

I plan to buy SSFIV on pc if they ever release it, but I'm fed up with these useless anti-piracy policies that don't do anything and only hurt legal customers... when will companies learn...

At least piracy is good advertising: a downloaded copy of a game would never be an actual sale (anyone who downloads a game wouldn't buy it if the couldn't be pirated... they would just stick with the important titles, those that always sell), but if they download it and they like it, chances are they will stick with the community and look forward to other titles in the franchise.

Posted by Serious on December 29, 2009 at 11:45 a.m. #115

i think that they should just keep it off the xbox 360. their consoles will eventually be banned so why care. forget the xbox fans and go solely for ps3. i hope they do this for final fantasy 13.

Posted by foLster on December 29, 2009 at 11:49 a.m. #116

I use pirating as a means to try it out before I buy it, especially for PC when you aren't allowed to return games. If I like the game, I will buy it and support the developer.

That's exactly what I did for SF4.

Posted by Paravel on December 29, 2009 at 12:03 p.m. #117

I didn't even know you could pirate PS3 games... but, if I know something about people, it's that they don't like to pay a lot of money for a game if it's not going to be good. So I definitely understand pirating games if you are wary of the quality.

But truly this day and age, the real bread and butter is online gaming, which maybe the focus should be on instead of on preventing piracy per se. They spend so much money and effort on it, but it never works. All that money could be better spent developing more in depth online play, and perhaps register your handle to your game copy or something to be able to play online.

I have definitely downloaded a game, thought the single player was good enough that it would be worth it to buy for multiplayer (which is pretty much the only way to play a game anymore save for a few specialty titles) and then subsequently bought the game. If anything, almost every single game purchase I have made in the last 15 years has been due to enjoying a game enough that I think it's worth buying.

Just my two cents on the whole idea...

Omg second most pirated game on xbox?!?! Better not release it there...

Damn, thats a pretty high number of PC pirates though, but most of that exists probably because people didn't want to pay for the BETTER version of the game 6 or 7 months after the other versions came out.

Solution seems pretty damn easy to me, release PC version at the same time as the others.

what does a pc cost to run SF4 proper? eight to nine hundred and they cant afford to pay for a copy? I agree with the guy about pc programs 150 and up for mcafee program when my internet provider will give me the program for free. when you buy a new pc they give you alot of what you need and you get the cpu also sometimes the screen also you know for a fact that the programs dont cost nothing. then turn around and try to buy them one at a time and it would cost more than what you just paid for. Now you you take companies that make games and that is all they do they have to make there money some way. Will i get ssf4? hell yes!worth it? yes just for the new player and stages and online stuff the only thing i have to complain about is we have seen new stages and players!!!WHY CANT WE SEE WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO THE OLD PLAYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THERE MAINS NOT SOME NEW ONE THAT THEY DONT EVEN HOW THEY WILL PLAY!!!! COME ON CAPCOM WHY IS THIS SO TOP SECRET????????

Posted by chiss on December 29, 2009 at 3:58 p.m. #127

I'd argue that unlike games like MW2, piracy doesn't really matter for a title like SF4.

All of the games content is in multiplayer. Not having a CD Key basically means you are unable to play the game (in my opinion).

I had at least 5 friends who downloaded pirated copies who ended up buying the game. Also i had friends who bought it on STEAM and ended up getting a pirated version (which they put their CD Key into) because they didn't like having to launch from STEAM.

I genuinely think the lack of a demo causes people to illegally download a game to try it out, before committing to the buy. I'd be surprised if a GOOD portion of those downloads didnt end up buying it.

Seriously, release a demo for SSF4 in which you can only play as Ryu or Chun Li.

ps3 still had not been able to pirate, which probably result sony spend tons of money at prevent it since ps2 was the most pirate system.

also is due to blank blu-ray disk cost is very high, purpose to prevent you to copy. Hacker could just hack ps3 and make to copy the game to the system but still not able to do so.

Posted by Zib on December 29, 2009 at 10:39 p.m. #132

Some people would simply never buy a fighting game, especially one with a high execution barrier as in SF4. But when it gets a lot of hype they will check it out regardless.

the fact that the proper people didn't make money for their hard work is a shame but at least the game was played by well over a million more people. I think publishers need to lower the price of their games and DLC. Paying $60 plus the cost of future DLC is an investment a lot of consumers don't want to pay. I think there needs to be a happy medium where piracy is cut down but sales are improved, that way everyone wins.

The reason why Capcom keep supporting the Street Fighter franchise on the Xbox 360 is obsviously because Street Fighter IV sold more copies on the 360 despite the piracy problem on that platform. Glad to see that Capcom wants to release SSFIV for the 360 because I don't want to play a sub HD aka the PS3 version (for those who don't the PS3 version of SFIV did not even achieve 720p).

Just look at "Modern Warfare 2".... it's No.1 in PC selling charts, despite beeing the most pirated game for PC.
=> http://www.4players.de/4players.php/v...

Combine these Torrent statistics with selling charts and you will get the following "hidden" resuts:

1) the top downloaded games got the most attention

2) people try games before they buy them in case they are unsure investing money

3) Fighting Games are still popular on PC

4) Street Fighter 4 was released months later on PC than on consoles, resulting in:
=> some people who already got SF4 on their consoles didn't saw a point for paying a second time
=> impatient people downloaded it, even if they preordered SF4, because it took about a month until it was delivered/available in some countries. A month is a lot of training / experience advantage to be prepared for online play.

btw: I'm curious how Infinity Ward wants to explain their shareholders that the most pirated game is the best selling game on PC atm. usually piracy was always their answer for everything from beginning ;-)

Posted by baz on January 1, 2010 at 4:38 a.m. #148

Ok, I read all these comments above me and this is what I gotta say.......

"1." I have gotten a lot of games for different systems and since they started putting them on CD's and DVD's and having faulty consoles - I have no problem copying them morally, they are an inferior product that was made to get scratched and broken. I bought the xbox the week it came out and what did I get?, a system that ruins it's own games by putting scratches on them. I got a dreamcast and saturn, and one lil scratch and my game is fu c ckk ked up, and I played both systems till they died, who's getting ripped off there!?, but hey, my nintendo from the 80's still works, what the fuc cckk kk!?, who's the pirate now!?

Until game companies give us a real tangible product that is worth half a sh-ite this is what they deserve. I feel sorry for those developers who have to make games for all these operating systems and piece of sh-ite consoles, and that they have to put it on a fragile plastic turd that a single fingerprint can destroy. I selectively buy certain games and hardware due to the effort I admire "AT MY DISCRETION". Think about this before you judge!

"2." Some people collect stuff and like to keep it in it's package to retain value, so copying games is awesome for this. Than buying something then destroying it and having to buy it again. Think about this before you judge!

"3." A pirate is someone who takes something away from someone that it belongs too. If I go into a store that sells bananas and make an exact copy of a banana instead of buying it and walk out with it, answer me this... DID I STEAL THE BANANA?
Think about this before you judge!

"4." I bought that crazy computer and the burner and all this stuff for media, and you blame me for wanting to use it to it's full potential, If I record a song on the radio how is that so different from downloading it?? If anything blame the people who make that hardware and blame yourself for not having media that is sophisticated enough to not be taken apart by just anyone! This almost never happened with nes and snes games (or records who some argue are better than mp3 or wav files) cuz they had their own high quality media that was only available to developers to write on in "most" cases.
Think about this before you judge!

Posted by baz on January 1, 2010 at 4:39 a.m. #149

"5." I buy a wii the day it comes out and there are no fighting games and I just finished Zelda, should I have to wait a year to play all the games this expensive hardware can handle, I hacked that mother fukk kker and played the bleach fighting game and had a blast! I had tatsunoko vs capcom 2 days after it was released in arcades and wii in japan, I can play the weird characters that are not in the american release! Is this so wrong?
Think about this before you judge!

"6." For all these people who judge on here and how you suck the government and corporate D.I.C.K. and their laws!
You must believe these societies will last forever and they may, in some way or form, but if there was a disaster and much of our art and history was destroyed, the cultural artifacts that would be found by future generations would heavily depend on how many "COPIES" of certain things where produced (punctuated equilibrium). So copying things creates a better chance for something to survive down the generations.

Think about it..................

@WTF

at evo, whenever they play sf3 or mvc2 on dreamcast they use a special "fan made disc" wich is a burnt game that contains the english and japanese versions of superpuzzlefighterturbo, sf3 3rd strike, Mvscapcom2,Capcom vs SNK 2 "Millionaire Fighting", super street fighter 2 turbo, plus some extra bonus stuff. It's highly understandable because finding these games for dreamcast is tough, but it is a burnt "copied" game non the less. I'm sure if you watch old evo movies you will see the start up screen. I burnt one of these discs for myself so I was even surprised to see evo judges using it at the tournament. Wanna read about it, here you go, a must for a street fighter fans with a dreamcast, did I mention it is a self booting game so any one can burn it and just throw it in there with no hassle.....http://www.dcisozone.com/downloads/388/capcom-fighting-collection-disc.html
